Latest Game Updates

Guild Wars 2 is an MMORPG from ArenaNet, published by NCSoft. It takes place approximately 250 years after the events of Guild Wars 1, and features the adventures of many different races and people across a varied fantasy world. Guild Wars 2 includes extensive PvE (including 5-person dungeons, 10-person strikes and raids, story instances, and world bosses), World vs World vs World (a massive week long three server war including castle sieges and strategic battles), and Structured PvP (5v5 structured "esports" matches where gear/level are normalized and taken out of the equation).

The base game of GW2 is FREE TO PLAY!
Play for free here: https://account.arena.net/welcome
Play for free on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1284210/Guild_Wars_2/
There are a number of restrictions for Free To Play accounts, available here https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Account#Free_accounts

If you decide you like it, and you probably will, you can buy it here: http://buy.guildwars2.com/ or on Steam.

Few important things to get out of the way first:
  • If you are looking at this game for the first time, you absolutely cannot go wrong. Not only is this absolutely is one of the best MMOs currently on the market, it's FREE to play!
  • If you are looking at this again after a break, yes, a lot has changed you should come back and try it again! As there is no sub fee, you have literally nothing to lose but a bit of time. The reasons people left are subjective and many, so no one else other than you can tell you if you'd enjoy it again. Just fuckin' try it again! It's a fantastic time to return to GW2, and there will be an enormous amount of content and a very healthy goon population to play with.
  • No more temporary content! I know this was a big complaint for a while, but Anet learned their lesson. Get the rewards you missed from laurel vendors, and if you missed episodes in Season 2, 3, 4, or 5/IBS, you can unlock episodes with gems. If you log in for each episode during the Living Story updates, you unlock it for free.
  • I apologize in advance, but this OP is not going to list any specific builds. The maintenance required would be ridiculous, as not only are builds very subjective, they change regularly as the game is updated. Refer to the links section lower in this OP for sites about current builds and meta info!
  • Guild Wars 2 is an non-traditional MMO for the most part. Fun and looking good tends to come before everything else here. Choose your build, gear, playstyle, everything, based on what you find the most fun or best looking.

Secrets of the Obscure will be released on August 22nd! The fourth expansion won't be as large as the others, but will bring in a number of core gameplay modifications.
  • Finally get to explore that dang floating Wizard Tower!
  • No new elite specs because jeez there's too many already, but instead...
  • Removal of elite spec weapon restrictions - Hammer on Soulbeast? Hammer on Mechanist? Hammer on Tempest? Yes!
  • More weapons for all classes (not at launch).
  • Non-Raid PvE Legendary Armor!

The third and most recent expansion pack for GW2 is End of Dragons!!

  • New specializations for each class!
  • No new tier of gear!
  • No increase in level cap!
  • Four giant maps to explore in Cantha
  • Boats!
  • Fishing!
  • A big honkin' siege turtle!

End of Dragons was released Febuary 28, 2022, and can be purchased at https://buy.guildwars2.com/en-us/end-of-dragons

The second expansion pack for GW2 was Path of Fire!

  • New specializations for each class!
  • No new tier of gear!
  • No increase in level cap!
  • Five new enormous zones in the Crystal Desert
  • Mounts!

Path of Fire came out on September 22, 2017, and is bundled with the first expac, Heart of Thorns. Buy it at https://buy.guildwars2.com/en-us/path-of-fire

The first expansion pack for GW2 was Heart of Thorns!

Heart of Thorns came out on October 23, 2015, and is now included with PoF.

The primary home server for goons is Maguuma, a North American realm. Most Euros, Aussies, and other assorted human beings play on Maguuma with no lag problems etc. You will find people online around the clock in both main goon guilds. Both guilds are similar in a lot of ways and you should try both! You can be in multiple guilds in this game. While we recommend you choose Maguuma for a server, your home server choice only matters for WvW, all instances and game systems are linked except for that. As well, there is limited NA/EU interaction, so please ensure you are in the correct geographic realm (North America) for goony play!

Visit the discords for either of the guilds below for info on how to join them! Do not post in this thread asking for an invite. Both guilds use off-site authorization and have a specific process for joining them. Again, do not post in this thread asking for an invite!

:siren::siren: About the Game :siren::siren:

PvE (Player versus Environment)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5RCeGiMby8

GW2's PvE is quite extensive, and consists of a number of major parts:

  • Living Story: Anet's official term for changes to the game intended to bring the world of Guild Wars 2 to life. Each major game update includes NPCs, events, and sometimes new instances that tell the story of Tyria's ongoing evolution.

Living World, aka Living Story, is how Anet is adding new content to the game. There is more on this later in the OP, so read on!

  • Personal Story: You character follows a story which leads you throughout the world, replacing the campaign and mission system from the original Guild Wars. The storyline is personalized based on the character's race, profession and biography questions answered during character creation and branches based on decisions made by the player during game play.

Much of the personal story takes place in solo instances for the character, but other players can be invited to take part in their story. The story instances scale in difficulty with the number of players participating.

Each character also has a home instance which updates as the player advances through the personal story and the world. The player can invite other players to see their home instance.

  • Renown Hearts: Renown Hearts are fixed areas within an explorable zone that give a set of tasks for a player to assist with and provide a reward upon completion. Rather than being given as a checklist of tasks a player needs to do in sequence, players simply follow a list of possible actions or activities that contribute to the progress of an area's renown heart. Renown hearts act as a way of guiding players towards dynamic events.

  • Events: Dynamic events ensure something is always happening in the world. These events replace the traditional MMO quest system, and any player coming across the event can contribute and be rewarded. Events can influence or overlap with each other, chaining from one event to another. A large portion of PvE experience consists of players participating in events together, ranging in from helping farmer grow his crops to epic battles against champions of the Elder Dragons.

Events are the bread and butter of GW2 content, and you should do them as much as you can everywhere you can!

  • Dungeons: Dungeons have two modes: a story mode which tells the story of Destiny's Edge. Each of the 8 dungeons has one story mode version and three explorable mode versions (with Arah being the exception with 4). You have to run the story mode, which is lower level than the explorable mode, to unlock the explorable paths! Only one person in your dungeon group has to do this.

  • Fractals: Fractals of the Mists is a special type of dungeon that consists of an array of mini-dungeons called fractals, where each fractal has its own story and environment. Characters are adjusted to level 80 within the dungeon. The dungeon is one of the primary sources of ascended equipment and provides materials for crafting infused equipment.

  • Raids: Introduced with Heart of Thorns, raids are 10-player party-based PvE instances intended to challenge players more than any other PvE group mode. This image succinctly describes raids:

  • Strikes: These are 10-player PvE instances that are designed to be not as intense as raids but still requires group effort to accomplish. Bite-sized raids.

  • Crafting: A player can gather materials to craft items for themselves and their friends. A player character can possess two crafting disciplines at a time, but gathering of different resource types is not restricted. Crafting recipes can be discovered by purchasing them from trainer, by leveling up or as loot, but mostly by experimenting with different combinations of materials at a crafting station.

Crafting is often used as an expensive way to powerlevel alts, with the experienced granted from it. Several crafting skills can also be advanced to level 500 now, and craft Ascended-tier items.

:siren::siren: Living Story :siren::siren:

Guild Wars 2 has been doing updates and plot advancement through their "Living Story" system. Originally designed limited time content that would have permanant effects on the world (rip old LA), it has changed to repeatable chapters that are unlocked for free if you log on during the latest release or for a modest fee of gems if you missed out.
  • Scarlet's War/Season 1: Fall in love with everyone's favorite villian all over again. This was released as live content, but is now being packaged as chapters and will be made available to everyone for free.

  • Glint's Prophecy/Season 2: Explore the Maguuma Wastes to figure out what the heck the previous season was about, and respond to a new enemy threatening all of Tyria. Eight chapters.

  • Glint's Legacy/Season 3: Following the aftermath of Heart of Thorns, the magic in the world is going a little crazy and you need to get things under control. Explore some magically unstable environments and make a new friend. Six chapters, six maps, and the most popular jumping puzzle.

  • Rise of Kralkatorrik/Season 4: There's some unfinished business left after Path of Fire, and you're going to travel across the rest of the Crystal Desert to finish the fight. Six chapters, six maps, two really good mounts!

  • Icebrood Saga/Season 5: Go North to where the Charr and Norn rule. Get drunk, eat meat, and try to not to start a war. Six + one chapters, three big maps.

WvW (World vs World)

WvW is a PvP game mode where players from three different servers, or worlds, battle in The Mists. It features open-world combat on four large maps with up to several hundred players per map. In World versus World, players can siege structures such as Keeps and Towers with siege weapons, and battle over resources, to win rewards for their world and prestigious World Experience for themselves.

Note that for free accounts, you can't enter WvW until level 60! You can find detailed information about WvW mechanics here.

WvW has a huge variety of features and progression options:
  • Skirmishes are 2-hour chunks that split up each 1 week match. Within each skirmish, you can get "pips" that count towards a reward chest that give you all sorts of fancy items.
  • Reward Tracks have been added as a way of rewarding participation in WvW. There are tracks for a huge variety of zones that, once completed through participating in various WvW events, will give you rewards for PvE progression and unique skins from the zone in question. It's a great way of getting PvE items from playing WvW.
  • WvW Ranks have been introduced along with WvW XP to give you bonuses to everything from flame rams to amount of supply you can carry. There are thousands of ranks to work through and this is completely separate from regular XP.
  • Warclaw. The only mount available to use in WvW, a giant battle cat! Unlockable by putting a WvW Rank point into the Warclaw mastery, and then by completing a collection and reward track. Sniff out hidden foes to mark them on your minimap, throw spears to forcibly dismount your opponents, and jump on every enemy ever.
  • Edge of the Mists. This is an "overflow" map that never has a queue and just spins up more instances of. It does not count towards your world's point total, but can give you other bonuses for winning like supply drops in the main four maps. EotM has 3 unique varied environments (desert, jungle, ice/snow), many objectives to capture, and is extremely fun being a smattering of rocks floating in the air. It contains many "special" objectives, from reactors (which have supply dumps) to airports and siege workshops. There are some fun transforms (like lights balls to scout with, and scorpions that siege things with butt missiles), as well as other unique and interesting mechanics.

sPvP (Structured PvP)

(thanks to MLG allstar Lazy aka Turncoat Mommy for this writeup)

sPvP is the game's small scale fast pace pvp game mode. The game pits level 80 characters against each other using normalized gear setups. If you're not 80 yet, don't worry. The game will auto level you and give you most the traits and skills unlocked, so no matter if you're level 1 or 80, you'll be on a level playing field as everyone else. The only thing that would need to be unlocked are some amulets.

Currently there are 8 conquest maps. Every conquest map has their own secondary objective or gimmick to make them unique. You can play these maps in either hot join, solo queue, or as a team. The queued modes are ranked so you'll have a fun game of even teams of 5 with players ranked roughly at your skill level. It is very much worth a try at the ranked game modes if hot join did not interest you much.

You can earn prizes such as champion bags, materials, level tomes, skill scrolls, finishers, even dungeon gear and legendary materials. You have nothing to lose so give it a try, you might find it a fun activity to do in addition to all the other content the game offers.

:siren::siren::siren: Classes :siren::siren::siren:

The Revenant channels legendary powers to slaughter foes and unleash chaos on the battlefield. Enter the field of battle heavily armored and equipped with the otherworldly powers of the Mists. Get into arguments with the voices in your head.

The Revenant is basically as if the movie The Revenant were an MMO class.

If the Revenant were a food, it would be a steak so rare it's still bloody and mooing

Revenant Elite Specializations: Herald (shield), Renegade (shortbow), and Vindicator (greatsword).
Revenant Class Forum

The Warrior is a master of weapons who relies on speed, strength, toughness, and heavy armor to survive in battle. A warrior can shrug off blow after blow to stay in the fight, all the while building up adrenaline to fuel his offense.

The Warrior uses all their weapons and all their body parts.

If the Warrior were a food, it would be an In-n-Out Double Double Animal Style.

Warrior Elite Specializations: Berserker (torch), Spellbreaker (dagger), and Bladesworn (pistolGUNBLADE)
Warrior Class Forum

The Guardian is a devoted fighter who calls upon powerful virtues to smite enemies and protect allies. As dangerous with a staff as he is with a mighty two-handed hammer, a true guardian is a master tactician who knows when to sacrifice his own defenses to empower his allies to achieve victory.

The Guardian is extremely valued in a group setting, and combine extremely high damage skills with buffs and heals. To counter this power, they get all their weapon models ruined by the Aegis Effect.

If the Guardian were a food, it would still be an aegis-shaped grilled cheese.

Guardian Elite Specializations: Dragonhunter (longbow), Firebrand (axe), and Willbender (another sword!!)
Guardian Class Forum

Masters of mechanical mayhem, The Engineer tinkers with explosives, gadgets, elixirs, and all manner of deployable devices. They can take control of an area by placing turrets, support their allies with alchemic weaponry, or lay waste to foes with a wide array of mines, bombs, and grenades.

Engineers are extremely fun to play with a wide variety of gadgets and makes poo poo blow up whilst giving you carpal tunnel syndrome.

If the Engineer were a food, it would be a slow cooker with literally every edible item in your kitchen in it that you have to stir every 5 seconds for 8 hours.

Engineer Elite Specializations: Scrapper (hammer), Holosmith (sword), and Mechanist (mace AND A GOLEM BUDDY)
Engineer Class Forum

A master of stealth and surprise, The Thief is deadly in single combat—particularly when catching enemies off guard. Thieves compensate for their relatively low armor and health by being quick and evasive. They can move through the shadows, vanish into thin air, or steal items from their opponents and use them as weapons. Enemies should watch their backs, or the thief will watch it for them.

Thieves have fancy twirls and dodges and knives and arrows and leather spandex bodysuits and can turn invisible as well to top it off and they're so goddamn stupid and annoying and stop yelling at me i don't w-

If the Thief were a food, it would be a metal lunch box containing a plain sandwich and my dignity.

Thief Elite Specializations: Daredevil (staff), Deadeye] (rifle), and Specter (scepter).
Thief Class Forum

The Ranger is a jack-of-all-trades and a master of them all as well, relying on their keen eye, steady hand, or the power of nature itself. A master of ranged combat, the ranger is capable of striking unwitting foes from a distance with their bow.

Rangers spend 50% of their gold on pet food and constantly complain about there being no alternative pet skins.

If the Ranger were a food, it would unseasoned kale chips.

Ranger Elite Specializations: Druid (staff) Soulbeast (dagger), and Untamed (hammer).

Ranger Class Forum
Pet Info

The Elementalist channels natural forces of destruction, making fire, air, earth, and water do their bidding. What the Elementalist lacks in physical toughness, they make up for in the ability to inflict massive damage in a single attack, dropping foes from a distance before they can become a threat. Yet, despite incredible offensive potential, versatility is what makes the Elementalist truly formidable. Rather than swap weapons to adjust to new situations, the multi-faceted elementalist quickly adapts to new threats by attuning to different elements as needed. When the elementalist attunes to any of the four elements, they receive intrinsic bonuses that continually empowers them.

The Elementalist throws a buttload of magic everywhere damaging and healing everything in sight, as they float around a badass pillar of fire.

If the Elementalist were a food, it would be an enormous sack of Jujubes.

Elementalist Elite Specilizations: Tempest (warhorn) Weaver (sword), and Catalyst (hammer).
Elementalist Class Forum

The Necromancer is a practitioner of the dark arts who summons the dead, wields the power of lost souls, and literally sucks the lifeblood of the enemy. A Necromancer feeds on life force, which he can use to cheat death or bring allies back from the brink. A necromancer feeds on death and decay. Life force is the energy that a Necromancer uses to extend his own life. Using specific skills, a Necromancer builds up life force by attacking and killing enemies.

The Necromancer invokes the power of death to destroy your very soul, and they're very good at making a single player look like an entire zerg with their minions.

If the Necromancer were a food, it would be soup made from the venom of poisonous frogs.

Necromancer Elite Specializations: Reaper (greatsword), Scourge (torch), and Harbinger (pistol).
Necromancer Class Forum

The Mesmer is a magical duelist who relies on deception and confusion to keep their opponent in check. Indecision is their greatest ally. Using powerful illusions to distract, they make sure they never go toe to toe with an enemy; they use their powers and tactics to set up an unfair fight. Just when you think you've figured out what the mesmer is doing, illusions begin to shatter, clones start to fade away, and you realize you've been swinging at empty air all along. It's hard to keep your eye on the real mesmer.

Mesmers are still the GW2 mass transit system. It is their job to fill the world with pink butterflies.

If the Mesmer were a food, it would be a purple sparkly cake in the shape of a school bus.

Mesmer Elite Specializations: Chronomancer (shield), Mirage (axe), and Virtuoso (dagger)

(wip) Looking to get into something but don't know anything about it? Here you go

Fractals

Fractals are divided into four "tiers", with each one spanning 25 levels. T1 is 1-25, T2 26-50, T3 51-75, and T4 76-100. The difficulty increases each level with stronger enemies, and with each tier by introducing more mechanics (boss attacks, environmental hazards) and Mistlock Instabilities, which cause various effects to the player and enemies.

Agony: Agony is an effect that can be applied by various means in fractal levels 20+. It kills you very quickly and significantly reduces the healing you receive, so to counteract this you will require Agony Resistance through the use of Agony Infusions. T1 fractals have no/very little agony. You can obtain temporary Agony Resistance by using a Tear of Alba potion, which will cover the entirety of T1s. The maximum agony you'll encounter is 150, which you'll only find in the fractal level 100.

Agony Resistance: Agony Infusions can only be inserted into Ascended-tier equipment (with a few exceptions (1) (2)). Ascended gear is never soulbound, so you are able to move your ascended equipment (and the infusions) to other characters. A full set of upgraded ascended equipment will give you 18 Infusion slots - 6 from armor, 2 from your currently equipped weapon, 1 each from accessories, 2 from an Infused backpiece, and 3 each from rings (1 base, 1 from Infusing, and 1 from Attuning)

15 infusion slots filled with +9 infusions will get you to 135 AR, then adding the +15 temporary resistance from the Tear of Alba potion will allow you to not die horribly at any level (from agony, at least). Getting these infusion slots is reachable with a variety of equipment combinations, but here's a few I would recommend going for:
  • 6 armor, 1 backpack, 2 accessories, 6 rings - avoids having to commit to a particular weapon type, but requires a lot of fractal relics or lucky drops to fully upgrade your rings.
  • 6 armor, 2 weapon, 1 backpack, 2 accessories, 4 rings - if you don't have the materials to Infuse your rings, this allows you to bypass that.
You do not need ascended equipment to do T1/baby fractals.

Well, I think overall the community is hyping up the Steam release a bit too much, expecting a bigger influx of new players than there might actually be, but I'm hoping the decade achievements will sort of reinvigorate activity across the map as people try to get events and stuff done. I was in Metrica earlier and there was a fair number of people hunting down events to do to get their proofs

Only around 3000 people used the Steam client today. ArenaNet did the bare minimum to bring GW2 to Steam, and didn't market it at all. With no official way to use your already existing account, i'm not really sure why anet bothered.

So what is this? Some sort of Asura ERP simulator??

Edit: also I've been doing the Slaw Facts bit now for 7 years this week. How time flies.

a builds section in the OP would be neat with some starter builds like rifle mechanist or power reaper or untamed

Decade armor slaps, but I'm sad the dye channels don't... do more.
Dye channel 1 is all the gold and the other three channels are the blue. (slight pinkish areas are just light reflecting off the armor)

I reinstalled this because of the steam launch and lol I totally forgot I have a max level necromancer in this. I'm not sure if I'm actually going to be getting back into this again but it's fun walking around and being like "oh yeah I remember that!

I assume if I was to play this again I should probably just start a new character since I completely forget how to play?

Maybe. But it's not like there is a ton of tutorial you would be able to do again. The game doesn't really explain how to play. But that may have changed with the steam release.
You could also go to a lvl 60 or 80 zone and do some events.

Looks like the main goon realm of Maguuma is all full up.

Do goons have a presence on any other servers or am I going to have to make my own friends?

It matters much less than it used to. Join a random server and wait for slots on maguuma to open

It mostly only matters for WvW and that won't be an issue anymore once the WvW alliance stuff is actually released, but we don't know exactly when this will happen.

How did I get here?
I wouldn't even bother transferring to Maguuma unless you really want to World vs World with other goons.

It was 1800 gems to transfer last time I saw open slots.

World vs World is the only place server matters now and even that is slated to change some day if they ever get alliances working.

Welp apparently it doesn't matter because I fat fingered an EU server that it wont let me change.

Is there seriously no way to change the loving server so I can create a new character?

Did you just start playing? Not worth it otherwise but afaik if you delete all your characters you can pick a server/region again.

PARTY ALL NIGHT

EAT BRAINS ALL DAY

Spent all night in newbie zones helping out new players and handing out gifts.

Didn't see a single nasty person, no bigoted speech and everyone seemed to be having a great time.

Guild Wars 2 remains fantastic.

When I began playing again earlier today, the newbie zone was full of Mentors doing similar. It's a real nice thing to see.

I thought that would be an option but it's not.

I guess I have to create an an arena net account to ask support to delete my arena net account.

Off to a great start!
