a builds section in the OP would be neat with some starter builds like rifle mechanist or power reaper or untamed

I don't do a whole lot of instanced content so I usually just grab whatever is popular on metabattle for open world builds: https://metabattle.com/wiki/Open_World#General_Builds. They probably get you to a good combination of traits/weapons/gear stats since some are better than others. The builds often skip out on hard crowd control (so push/pull/knockdown etc) so I'd try adding one if possible as it's good for bosses. You can also try mixing in a stun break or condition cleanse.

They've got a build for each class that uses the core/free to play traits and skills, and also a few "low-intensity" builds that emphasize passive healing/survival and weapons not needing much rotation.

For newer players getting set up at level 80, it can be advantageous to choose a power-based build to start which typically use Berserker stat gear. The level-80 exotic Berserker armor is cheap, just buy a set of "Devona's" armor on the trading post for <1 gold a piece. Weapons can be more, just set up a filter on the Trading Post (level 80, exotic, containing power, precision, and ferocity stats) and look for the cheapest option. Usually the cheapest is a named variant (for example, https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Bonetti%27s_Rapier for sword). And for getting gold, you can get 2 gold for completing 3 of the daily achievements and it's usually pretty quick.

Free mount skin is huge, I don't remember them ever doing that before.

I've got one mount skin that I'm sure I didn't pay for, so I think they might have given away a random pick mount skin before. Either that or it came from a black lion chest I opened with a free key.

You need all of Season 4 to get Skyscale. I waited to get it until I finished PoF and the story content of LS4, but I also had gotten the Griffon so I had some access to flight already.

I was really annoyed when I found this out, I had already started the skyscale quests and went through a couple of the collections. But I only have 2/3 of the episodes unlocked and you need to do some trivial tasks in the latter episodes to get it finished.

So yeah I’m never getting it.

So I've been looking at gearing stuff uh do I need to take a weapon crafting profession to make the higher level weapons I like being a cook and tailer.

If you just want level 80 exotics then no. A lot of them can be bought on the trading post for not that much gold, and you can also get stat-selectable ones from Heart of Thorns vendors (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Plated_weapons). Probably lots of other ways too, but TBH I usually just buy from the TP since I've got a lot of gold.

For ascended stuff some can come from drops (but it's fairly low chance I think), you can get a few through achievements, you can also buy some through vendors (but some of the vendors may require crafted components? not sure), or you can craft them. The wiki on ascended weapons should tell you all the ways to get them: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Ascended_weapon
