I wish someone would make movies like this again. The reason that nobody cares about sprawling epics anymore is because we know that the IT department did all of the work. Build some actual sets and have actual people do stuff in Rome. I'll watch it.

People stopped caring somewhere around Cleopatra because it turns out "we got huge epic sets" was just another marketing gimmick that got old as fast as any other when the movies became about showing off the sets for four hours.

Huh I thought for years the story was that someone absolutely did die in the chariot race filing, god to know. Now if only the movie ended after the chariot climax. Instead there’s like 20 minutes about the trek to find Jesus and getting saved. It fits the tone of the movie sort of but it really drags.

Ben-Hur is easily one of my top favorite films, it's simply amazing. I got the same feeling from watching Lawrence of Arabia for the first time a few years back. Each battle scene is absolutely incredible when you take a step back and look at the scale of it all. https://youtu.be/lChJz2DSpsE

The production process for Cleopatra was completely insane as well. In today's dollars, the budget would have been $400 million. Elizabeth Taylor almost died of pneumonia during filming so the studio sent this really crass letter to Joan Collins that basically said "Hey you want the part if this dumb lady dies on us?" Hume Cronyn (Sosigenes) was originally signed to be on the movie for 10 weeks. He stayed with the production for 10 and a half months. The first director they hired got canned and when the next guy took over, the movie was already $7 million over budget and they only had 10 minutes of usable footage to show for it (none of which would actually end up in the movie). Captain Beans posted:Huh I thought for years the story was that someone absolutely did die in the chariot race filing, god to know. One stuntman came extremely close to dying quote:During the chariot race just before Ben-Hur's chariot jumps the wrecked chariot, stunt driver Joe Canutt can be seen dropping the reins and grabbing hold of the side of the his chariot (his father, stunt coordinator-2nd unit director Yakima Canutt, had instructed him to grip the underside of the chariot's railing. Joe ignored him, or forgot, and grasped the railing from the top, and was vaulted over the top of the chariot, which could have been fatal had his quick reflexes and strength not allowed him to haul himself back over the vehicle's yoke before he fell between the horses and chariot). haljordan fucked around with this message at 21:04 on Aug 29, 2022 |

OP i rented “Ben-Hur” per your recommendation and I haven’t seen a chariot race but there are loads of scenes of Judah and Arrius having sex and Judah blowing Simonides and stuff. When does the chariot race appear? Edit: nevermind OP I think this one’s on me, I think I got the wrong version of the film.

It’s pretty bad these days - I saw something where in the new Mulan movie the horse she rides was loving cgi. No stunts or crazy poo poo, just riding in a line, had the actress on.a green rocking stump and just cgi the horse. Just get a horse

I remember watching the first Avengers movie and being so bored by the final battle because this massive alien shows up to destroy NYC and there appears to be a grand total of 20 civilians in the entire city, all of whom pretty much immediately disappear. Just zero tension or stakes whatsoever.
