UNISON Health have completely hosed their ballot, almost nowhere made the 50% return rate to allow strikes and everyone is very angry and sad about it. UNISON is awful. We need to get a few heads for a gently caress up this size and get some serious improvements in how we operate.

Not much of a surprise; even among colleagues, we weren't sure the ballot would be successful. Asking people to lose a day's pay given the current state of affairs needs to be convincing - I know UNITE have said they'll pay out £70, but were UNISON even offering any strike pay?

I'm coming around to the idea that the mega-unions are not actually a great idea. Trying to be everything to everyone = everyone gets poo poo.

I don't think it was particularly an issue about sacrificing pay although many would be worried about that, it was just a case of starting campaigning way too late, not having enough organisation in branches to know how to quickly reach the relevant members, members not being reminded to update their details when changing jobs or moving house, just lots of organisational weaknesses all over the country.

Huge missed opportunity, I'm seething.

0.000% of Communism has been built. Evil child-murdering billionaires still rule the world with a shit-eating grin. All he has managed to do is make himself *sad*. It has, however, made him into a very, very smart boy with something like a university degree in Truth. Instead of building Communism, he now builds a precise model of this grotesque, duplicitous world.
https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/nov/29/thurrock-council-admits-disastrous-investments-caused-500m-deficit

quote:

The staggering scale of the catastrophe at Thurrock council in Essex – one of the biggest ever financial disasters in local government – is contained in an internal report made to the council’s cabinet, which reveals it has lost £275m on investments it made in solar energy and other businesses, and has set aside a further £130m this year to pay back investment debts.

quote:

The council’s Conservative leader, Mark Coxshall, issued a statement saying that services would continue to operate as normal for now and staff would continue to be paid. But he also warned that there would be “extremely difficult decisions to come” in what he called “uncertain and unsettling times”.

quote:

John Kent, the leader of Thurrock council’s Labour opposition, said Thurrock residents will be paying the price for the Conservatives’ catastrophic handling of the council’s affairs for decades.

Good solution, John!

Of course, the decision to invest was probably not difficult at all.

I had flu a couple of weeks ago. Way, way worse than covid, would much have preferred getting the flu jab which I also am not allowed. But then I've had a couple of COVID jabs so who knows.

I'm sure I've posted about this before but yeah I've had a proper case of flu before sometime around 2013. in my mid-20s. Bloody awful experience. I was in relatively decent shape at the time and it completely wiped me out for 2 weeks. Zero energy to the point where I was finding it a herculean effort just to get out of bed to go to the bathroom (which was only about 4 steps). I also felt like I'd been hit by a bus - every joint, bone and muscle ached. Very easy after that to see how it kills people.

Thing is Covid can be like that or worse too, you roll the dice when you get it.

Four score and five thousand years ago, around the time the Pharoah Khufu ordered the building of the Great Pyramid, Men of England ventured to Wales to steal their stones and bring them 150 miles to Salisbury Plain, whereupon they would erect a giant stone circle that somehow now costs £25 admission even though you can easily see it from the A303 and it was already loving there when they built the ticket booth. Thus it came to pass that the world map would be centred on England, and they would get a free monument in every city.

And many thousands of years later, although they left no written record, one would surely think that these tribesmen would be proud to know that an English manager is still willing to drag Stones many hundreds of miles around the world for no particular loving reason.
