My 40th is in a few months. I'm a little sad that there will be no babies. Mostly I'm expecting my birthday present to be an announcement that retirement age is increasing by another 5 years, thus increasing the chances of me dying at my desk and nobody noticing until my sphincter relaxes several hours later.

I don't know what joi stands for, and I'm eating so I don't want to Google it.

Not to be rude to Welsh people, but if they're searching for ASMR on PornHub, then either they don't understand ASMR, or I don't understand PornHub.

Also, can confirm that East Midlands people do not appreciate BBW IRL *wiggles 3rd chin seductively*

I’m seeing a lot of this sentiment now - that the new government will fix this problem in the short term, because they simply have to for society to survive - but… do they? Maybe I’m stuck in doom-mongering mode, but I really think they’re quite content to ride this out and see just how far they can push it without being forced to save people.

The assumption is that they will be forced. If the Chancellor is saying that people on £45k will struggle, when that average full time salary is about £40k, and hundreds of businesses already closing because of energy bills that haven't even been issued yet, people have a touching amount of faith that pressure from the upper middle classes will be enough to prompt some kind of governement action.

The alternative view is that the Tories will hold out for as long as they can lining their own pockets, then call an election hoping to lose it and let someone else sort out the mess. How long will the new PM have to be in office to get their pension and lifetime allowance? That'll tell you when the next election will be called.

It has been a whole day into the Truss Regime and people are getting nostalgic for Boris.

My house has no insulation, draughty windows, and relies 100% on mains gas and electricity. Periodically I look at attempting to tackle this but it's just overwhelming. The house would need so much work and every single improvement is so expensive, incredibly disruptive and messy, and probably wouldn't do much in isolation. The only saving grace is that it's a tiny, 2-bed mid-terrace.

One issue with solar panels is that people don't have a right to light, so they're not a reason to stop a developer building a 20 storey high-rise that blocks the light, or even just your neighbour building an extension/planting conifers that completely shade them. The exception is if the panels have been there 20 years, and even then it's on the homeowner to make the objection.

A minute's silence? Fine. Day of national mourning on the day of the state funeral? Appropriate. Organisations the Queen was patron of who want to do something extra? Sure, go ahead, it's relevant. When I was a little girl* I thought the Coldstream Guards had to stand still on guard duty for a whole day, like 9-5, except maybe for a lunch break where they could scratch their nose and take the heavy hat off for a bit. It used to worry me that they were really uncomfortable, and whether they'd lose their job if they sneezed or something.

And by 'little girl' I mean until I was about 19 or 20.

I got Alex Belfield and Levi Bellfield muddled up and was really confused about how a killer in prison had carried out a stalking campaign.

I wonder why the jury found him guilty of stalking four male victims but not guilty of stalking the four female victims. Reading between the lines, the judge disagreed because he's handed Belfield a lifetime restraining order banning him from contacting them.

Unfortunately a lot of people have had the same idea and rescues are struggling. If it's not an emergency - i.e. you are homeless - they might refuse take them. The cost of living crisis means fewer people are applying to adopt.

maybe that will mean the owners realise they dont need to cage them.

The cats are confined to one room. I'm still going in to feed/scoop poop.

This is the second time they've asked me to go around when they're away. The last time I opened the cage door and told them it was too small a space for 3 cats. This is why they've specifically said not to let them loose.

What's making me hesitate is that a few people have said because it's a temporary condition it may not be worth reporting when animal charities need to devote resources to more serious cases.

Warmchat: it'll be rolling blackouts at specific times, because up to a week without power in an uncontrolled fashion will kill people in all sorts of ways you'd never imagine. Most mobile phone masts have about 10 minutes back-up, so nobody is calling an ambulance when you fall down the stairs in the dark. Hospitals will postpone routine surgery, because although their power might be fine, it's dangerous to discharge someone home if they don't have power, especially if they need mains powered medical equipment or temperature-sensitive medications. Literally everything comes to a halt and no amount of thermal underwear will help.

That said, planned blackouts are manageable. I don't have a generator because I don't understand them, but got a power bank that can apparently charge my phone 4 times, and my solar radio as an alternative power source. For lighting, I have a battery powered lantern (with spare batteries), battery powered fairy lights (to wrap around the bannister so I don't break my neck getting to the bathroom), candles, a torch, and LED tealights.

In terms of cooking, I have one of those camping stoves with a couple of gas cannisters and a thermos. I always have a few Pot Noodles, Cup-a-Soups, and porridge bowls in the cupboard which only need hot water. They're not the tastiest things but hot food is hot food. Powdered milk is OK stirred into hot drinks if you don't want to open the fridge or the power is off for longer than expected. There's also a couple of those cold packs intended for picnic cool bags in my freezer. If the power does go out, they might help the food last longer, and I guess if you need meds keeping cool then they can buy you some extra time.

An honourable mention for disposable hand warmers! They warm up when exposed to air and stay warm for a good 8 hours. Useful for if the power goes out suddenly and you don't have time to make a hot water bottle. Lambs wool insoles will also help stop the cold seeping up from the floor, if there's no room in your shoes for multiple layers of socks.

Everything else, people have already covered. Maybe if you have any outside space, keep a bucket of rainwater so you can flush a toilet if the water pumps fail. I'm not even a prepper, this is all stuff I've acquired after experiencing storms that knocked out the power for 12 hours and houses that were appallingly insulated and impossible to warm in winter with only night storage heating.

But he isn't wrong on the first point - the UK should be training more staff. A lot of this is due to the Tories eviscerating the pipeline for clinical staff (by cancelling bursaries and slashing the number of commissioned places on courses)

Additional point: University funding has been slashed to the point where student fees are the dominant source of income. International students pay more, and so there is an incentive to court more foreign students. People criticise fees, which is valid, but the money has to come from somewhere. Healthcare degrees are not cheap and I can't believe the number of people who don't realise that £9k a year is a drop in the ocean. How much do they think it costs to kit out and run a fully equiped anatomy lab? The cold storage, the dissection tools, the X-ray and CT scanners, all the disposable PPE, the up-to-date clinical textbooks? The answer is that humanities and social science students on cheaper degrees subsidise them, and so if the number of English Literature students fall because "it's a pointless degree taught by the Wokerati", it becomes harder to fund the expensive clinical degrees.

So yes, train our own students, but recognise that this is going to cost money.
