skiing is great and I'm great at it. My skiis are very old though and I could do with some new ones.

If I'd emigrated to somewhere like canada... skiing would be part of my everyday life.

There's the Sheffield ski center that burnt down. Every so often a news report comes out about how someone's going to really, honestly, reopen it soon and they always mention the fire but are careful not to say the word "insurance".

That is very weird.

I've skied there, and the Edinburgh one. But I went to the ipswich one... and it had burnt down?

Like I never really understood how that could happen... but now more than one?

Goods exports from the UK to the EU reached £16.9bn in May, the highest level since figures started in 1997. It is, however, smaller traders who have particularly struggled with the additional paperwork required for exports after Brexit.

Bit surprised about that figure. What, presumably larger traders, are accounting for this overall increase if all the small ones like this brewery are seeing their exports obliterated?

presumably wetherspoons and so on are being hit by these rises? Obviously more insulated but not immune

apparently wetherspoons have 900 pubs? Put in a conservative 50k energy price increase per pub.

900 x 50k is 45million?

am I being dumb? 45million sounds like a lot for wetherspoons to soak up given all the other stuff and I reckon most of their pubs could be seeing twice that increase.

But that 5,6,7, 250 quid to 500 quid, who does that actually represent? People on 20-40k a year? more or less? Is this enough to buy off anyone?

Its obviously no good on its own, as the energy price increases are like a factor of 5-10 higher. And its wanky lever pulling rather than actual problem solving but I dont care about a few millionaires saving 2grand, and neither I suspect do they. Clearly this wont satisfy or in any way help the vast majority of poorest people, but does it even help the middle classes?

Noone is going to be impressed or happy with this.

Puberty blockers:

I too am not 100% on this (I mean in terms of understanding).

When people say to me stuff like no one under the age of 18 should get these things, what I have gleaned mostly from here (and stand to be corrected!) and say to them - well to the ones who are willing to have a proper discussion anyway - is:
"As I understand it, if you go through puberty in your outward body, then irreversible physiological changes occur. However, if you take puberty blockers and don't go through puberty at the 'usual' age, and then when you're 18 or whatever decide that actually you don't wish to transition, you stop taking the blockers and have puberty, albeit at a later age than most people, and with no adverse effects."

Is this understanding right?

very loathe to engage in this topic as I dont know wtf and don't want to offend, but that seems in some ways counter to the sports discussion we had the other day where the agreement seemed to be that after transition pretty much all advantage from a male puberty was voided? But maybe theres other things than sporting performance. I dunno.

One issue with solar panels is that people don't have a right to light, so they're not a reason to stop a developer building a 20 storey high-rise that blocks the light, or even just your neighbour building an extension/planting conifers that completely shade them. The exception is if the panels have been there 20 years, and even then it's on the homeowner to make the objection.

I was intending to have solar panels on one roof of my house, but neighbours took one look at me and planted a line of massive trees to hide me, right to the south.

No I dont think so. I dont think you can sue each other for so much money.

I've cut down several trees recently, on my property, but they were already dead. Needed to apply for an exemption for permission which they granted cos trees dead.

This is in a conservation area where there are implicit TPOs on every tree with fatter trunk than 75mm at shoulder height.

So these trees dont yet count but I can't kill them cos they aint mine. Its a bit odd that you can't kill trees but you can plant them.
