Kind of rooting for more grey hairs. I wish mine would get a move on, I've been going grey since I was a teenager but I have a lot of hair so it's still more dark than silver, want to look like an anime.

Camrath posted:It’s also weird. Throughout my 30s people pegged my age as ten years younger than reality, but around 39 (coincidentally when I started really noticing the white hairs in my beard) I suddenly got hit with a decade of aging in a few months. Everyone's thought I was about 40 since I was about 25 because the hair adds a lot of age, especially the grey. If I shaved it all off I would probably drop 10 years. Guavanaut posted:It's sometimes possible to accuse Israel or Saudi Arabia of things, even nonsense things, without necessarily being antisemitic or islamophobic, but I'm not sure how you can get so far into "janitor Jeb Bush planted bombs throughout both towers over a 12 hour period" without knowing that "Israel did 9/11" always comes alongside with "and they told all the Jews to stay home on the morning of the attack" and "and it was done to erase Rothschild ZOG banking records" and all the other stuff that you shouldn't have to ask about whether it is antisemitic or not. I though the saudi arabia thing was sort of relevent in the general sense that they promote that batshit brand of Islam, but I really don't know what Israel could have to do with it other than just antisemitism. joi is jerk off instructions, basically someone talking dirty to you but specifically in a way to facilitate you wanking, possibly with pictures. and there is absolutely porno ASMR because it turns out people get turned on by having people whisper at them very intimately and some people who get the weird response ASMR people look for also find it arousing. I do like that the north east is basically just googling "show me the porno of my people" I really need a geographical breakdown of scotland though, I want to know how the north/south east/west split goes, also specifically the islands full of church weirdos and edinburgh. No? Chav is a skinny lad with his trackies tucked into his socks and a nasally voice wearing fake burberry and either hassling you for a fag or swearing at you, possibly at the same time. At least it was when I was in school, dunno if they're still a thing any more.

Today I learned where the word originates from, never knew that. I don't... think it was used like that when I was a kid, I vaguely remember it being slightly interchangeable with "townies" and pretty associated with the rougher bits of grangetown and boro. Sort of like a weird kind of intra-class classism, cos nobody was posh but the kids from the proper rough bits of the town were still looked down on. Though being fair there were some places you wouldn't want to go cos you'd just be non-stop hassled by kids in tracksuits. I will say one thing for the internet it does seem to keep kids off the street unless they're actually playing, and comparatively out of trouble compared to when I was a kid and we didn't have it. I would say generally I think that standard english is just... not very good as a language. Like it's OK but all the most expressive words are imports or generated from minority cultures (AAVE keeps giving us a lot of good ones) or occasionally are old dialect words that survive in common usage in parts of the UK but which aren't something you'd get on the syllabus. If you need to express something forcefully, standard english just... isn't as good at it as either new words or imported words. And even conservatives can't resist this either, such as how they can't loving stop saying woke all the time, the meaning is nonsense but they still loving love the word. On a general language note I recently learned that apparently "cotters" is a very specific word to the northeast which is odd because I thought it was just... the word for that? But apparently every part of the UK has their own one, like what you call a small portion of bread.

HopperUK posted:This is kind of a false dichotomy though. English has always been supplemented by loan words and slang words and blended words. 'Standard English' isn't a thing. Well yeah, but I view that as the difference between english as you actually speak it and english as you would be taught it, and I don't find the two line up that well. Everyone gets a standard idea of english taught to them at school but I think the fact that nobody actually talks like that, is a part of why a lot of people struggle with writing. The common parts of english that are spoken everywhere depend on a far more localized set of dialect words in each place to give it actual usability which I think is why everyone does that. It may, of course, not be unique to english, I don't know if its status as being widely spoken and iterated upon in lots of places has the effect of widening that divide, or whether it's observable in all languages. I'm basically monolingual so I can't comment on other languages.

No I got the tape measure and looked at it because I keep forgetting how big an inch is. I learned primarily in cm as a kid so I keep having this feeling that inches are like, massive, but they're smaller than I think. I encourage readers to make their own knob jokes.
