Child assaults: ‘If the police won’t do their job, we’ll do it for them’ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-62722082

What does one do as a parent or a friend of a parent for a child who has been beaten up by a group of 5 kids of a similar age by kids who have written an apology but then immediately gone out and done the same thing again to another kid?

Physically the child victim is ok, but mentally they are utterly hosed, life ruining, or at least child hood ruining ptsd I’m guessing. They are in therapy, but, they aren’t the same person anymore. The attackers parents don’t seem to give a poo poo. I’m very upset so I’d like the level headedness of people here to offer up any advice.

Unfortunately parents who don't give a poo poo and are actually proud their kid is a bully exist. I overheard a conversation in the street between a teacher from the local comp and a parent whose kid was being bullied (and yes I did lurk nearby pretending to look at jewellery in a shop window to tune in) and the mother was 'what are the school doing about it' and the teacher said 'we've had the parents in and they said they were proud of their kid being a bully because it meant he was getting respect'!
Don't know what you can do other than get the fuzz involved.
As for the kiddo who was attacked, therapy is good but maybe also some self-defence classes etc? Danger is the bullied kiddo starts to bully other kids - I've seen this happen.

If you dwell in the great metropolis, new CityLit course run by David Rosenberg

David blurb:

quote:

In just 12 days time I will have the great pleasure of starting to teach my 12-part course through City Lit called “in the Footsteps of London’s Rebels”. Only the first and last sessions will be on Zoom - all the other 10 will be in the open air and on the streets. Each session will last 2 hours though some will end up during the last 25 minutes at a particular place - usually indoors where we will meet someone who can show us materials and add to our learning that week. I am out of the country - I don’t know how the bookings are going yet but advise those interested to book ASAP.

https://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/in-the-footsteps-of-london-s-rebels

Course Blurb:

quote:

What is the course about?
The course conveys this exciting history against the backdrop of 19th century and early 20th century London through a series of walking tours to sites of agitation and protest. These tours will include visits to buildings and institutions connected with this history.

This course will be delivered online and in person, and will involve tutor presentation and class discussion. Student preparation and homework outside class times is strongly encouraged. To fully participate in this online class you will need:
- An email address
- A reliable internet connection
- A computer/laptop/tablet with a fully updated browser (preferably google chrome). Your device will need a microphone, and preferably a camera.

What will we cover?
We will learn about inspirational individuals and movements that fought for radical change in the workplace, in their communities, and in the political sphere: from Chartists, suffragettes and striking matchgirls, to anarchists, conscientious objectors and anti-fascists. We will also find out what these social movements were demanding and where and how they campaigned to bring about changes in London.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
show you understand the challenges ordinary people faced in London during this period
identify the campaigns that sought to address these challenges
list key individuals that supported these campaigns.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
There are no particular skills needed, just an interest in learning about London’s social and political history and an enthusiasm for discovering and imagining the places where this history happened. You will need to be able to undertake a walking tour of up to 2 hours at a moderate pace, with several stopping points. Some of the walking tours will include an indoor visit so the actual walking will be less than two hours in these sessions .
Abilitiy to access zoom is needed for the 1st and the final session.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be an initial lecture/workshop to set the background scene for the period we will be studying, and the places where we will be walking. This will be followed by a series of walking tours focusing on specific issues, individuals and campaigns. On each tour you will receive an information handout summarising key points. Students will be encouraged to ask questions on the walks and raise discussion points. The final session on zoom will draw together the threads from the different walks to consolidate knowledge of protest movements in the capital and assess their successes and failures. No work is required outside of class although you will be directed to additional reading that you may wish to undertake.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs. All visits are free. You will need to wear comfortable walking shoes, appropriate clothing for the likely temperature outdoors, an umbrella for days when the weather is less predictable and a bottle of water for refreshment. You may wish to bring a pen and notebook to take your own notes.
Abilitiy to access zoom is needed for the 1st and the final session.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Any of the weekday or weekend London Walks courses starting in January. Please see the City Lit website.

Saying the issue is Capitalism, to most people, implies "therefore we should live like you imagine things were in Soviet Russia, which you have interchangeably been told is Communism/Marxism/Socialism but was probably State Capitalism instead.", while actually people on the ground have had the same complaints for loving ages, they've just been trained to see them as separate unrelated issues which have to be tackled one at a time, very slowly.

Bit surprised about that figure. What, presumably larger traders, are accounting for this overall increase if all the small ones like this brewery are seeing their exports obliterated?

Could be currency fluctuations. If £v€ has gone down then say if it cost €1000 and rate was 1.15€ to £1 then that's £869.56, and if rate is now €1.1 to £1 then it's £909.09 now so it looks like more.
(NB I haven't checked currency rates these are just examples).
This is why if £drops against $ FTSE 100 goes up because all the dollar investments worth more in £.
Bizarrely at work we've just had value of donations from one platform increase because UK donors using platform have it converted to USD when they pay. We get a monthly payout often 2 months in arrears of all the donations made (all turn into USD regardless of original currency). Then the payout in USD with a platform fee in USD deducted is exchanged to £ when it hits our bank and the end of August payout the effect has been that the fees have increased the donation in £! First time that's happened. I recalculated everything to make sure no error and emailed the ptb to say it wasn't an error.

Puberty blockers:

I too am not 100% on this (I mean in terms of understanding).

When people say to me stuff like no one under the age of 18 should get these things, what I have gleaned mostly from here (and stand to be corrected!) and say to them - well to the ones who are willing to have a proper discussion anyway - is:
"As I understand it, if you go through puberty in your outward body, then irreversible physiological changes occur. However, if you take puberty blockers and don't go through puberty at the 'usual' age, and then when you're 18 or whatever decide that actually you don't wish to transition, you stop taking the blockers and have puberty, albeit at a later age than most people, and with no adverse effects."

Is this understanding right?
