The in browser spell checkers don't know a lot of weirder words so you gotta double check you are spelling it right and not mixing up shnaushaver with snushaver and whatnot, and cross reference with urban dictionary, because trust me, you don't want to make that mistake.

Yeah this.

My wife sort of jokingly gives me poo poo when I'm looking at a word in French and, even though I'm somewhat bilingual, I think about how it relates to the English word it sort of looks like. "You're doing your word thing again?"

Yes. Yes, I am.

To me it sounded like he was asking if you google words after you've already been using them for a while whereas I look up the meanings before I even start using them.

At least that's how I read his comment.

languages whose written forms are based on pictograms and ideograms like chinese and such are also cool as hell. little drawings that make meanings that make sounds -- very neato.

People should Google lots of stuff.

One of the most annoying things I see on the internet is someone says something interesting and like clockwork, every time, there's some dipshit who replies "Wait, What?" followed by 5 people who give 5 different and incorrect answers.

Yeah I often end up hyper focusing on etymology of the word after i Google it and going down a rabbit hole of Wikipedia articles or whatever. Then I probably forget to even say what I was looking it up for. I also like learning about other languages. I tried to learn Japanese, got through memorizing hiragana and katakana and then I got to Kanji and I couldn't do it. But I know a few phrases and stuff so I guess it wasn't a total waste. I also have learned quite a bit of Spanish to the point where i can read and understand it pretty well, especially if I actually practice it. But I can't speak it hardly at all. I think I get anxiety about looking stupid if I get things wrong. I need to get over that.

All the time, OP. If I'm already sitting at the computer or on my phone, it takes a tiny amount of time and effort, so why wouldn't I?

That said I don't straight up google the word, I look it up on dictionary.com. I want the definition, not the thing itself.

I am a professional translator and I do it frequently. Funnily enough, often not because I don't know what a word means, but because there is a tendency in English marketing texts to use words that sound "cool" but don't really mean what the person using them thinks they mean. Sometimes you get words that actually have a negative connotation or just don't fit in context and then I have to look up the meaning and try to grasp what they thought it ment so I can use the correct equivalent in German.
