Is it? I remember in Matthew he's mostly massively annoyed a bunch of idiots are missing the point

The vibe was one of "poo poo god drat you idiot" so it's hard to imagine the explicit text as important

Matthew 19:9: "And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another commits adultery, and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.” The last line about marrying a divorced woman might be a later addition, but that doesn't change the meaning of the first part. There's not much in the surrounding context that makes it better either.

A whole hell of a lot of ink has been spilled about how basically to get around the plain reading. The Catholics seem to have settled on basically saying "we can say that the marriage never happened with an annulment" and a lot of others, myself included, basically just say "oh yeah, we all sin a ton but we're also saved from that very sin so don't like ... freak out". I'm sure a learned theologian would chaos dunk on me for thinking that but *shrug* just a layman here.

you’re not meant to do a plain reading

quote:

Christian doctrine is not a battle over the Scriptures. Sola Scriptura has not worked and never did. Such an approach simply leads to endless argument and confusion. Others may claim to use the “plain sense” of Scripture or some other 18th century rationalist construct. Such constructs are no more effective than other failed efforts of Sola Scriptura. Either we embrace the faith of the Apostles, once and for all delivered to the saints, or else we exile ourselves to confusion or, worse yet, to the false guidance of those who never sat in the seat of the Apostles.

Yeah i know

I need to read Matthew 19 again, because it has been a while but this is what i hate about the chapter:verse division. By itself that verse is pretty unambiguous, but context matters and I've not seen too many points made on verse isolates that stand up to their chapter+book context?

It has been a while and time/bad memory corrupts, but my impression comes from the in-chapter context

The same story is in Mark (without the porneia/sexual immorality bit) so probably worth reading there as well.

Matthew is a hackjob that steals from both Mark and Luke, but if the Pope even suggested that the Gospel of Matthew was written after the Gospel of Luke, he’d have a full‐blown schism on his hands.

I think there's only two and also that they only had a couple dozen names back then, so there's probably less than you should expect.

A fun article about how an early copyist either made a mistake and accidentally downplayed Mary Magdalene's role, or more likely did it on purpose:

https://today.duke.edu/2019/06/mary-or-martha-duke-scholars-research-finds-mary-magdalene-downplayed-new-testament-scribes

Also mentions how a pretty obvious in hindsight textual change went uncaught for centuries because no one was actually looking at the original documents.

Elizabath Schraeder did an interview about this, it's pretty interesting if you're into this stuff and probably tedious as hell if not. I am in the former camp but I am fairly warning this video is a conversation between a phd and a doctoral candidate about bible manuscripts so, you know, temper expectations, but i think it's awesome.

The scribe would have had no reason to deface the text if not for the Pope’s fuckup in 591 and twenty generation of fanboys building on it rather than admitting that the Pope got some characters mixed up in his head.

Not so much. Might be an insane chud, but otherwise I'd bet on random street violence.

Only time in recent memory that a pope got knocked off was John Paul I and it was because the Vatican Bank was tied up with a bunch of Mob and Gladio poo poo.

they just make a big deal of excommunicating you if you loudly/publicly won't toe the line. here's a list of notable cases. I imagine if you've been in the catholic church your entire professional life, your only higher ed being seminary, getting excommunicated 20+ years deep into a career would be pretty financially devastating

nah, not really. priests leave all the time and there's a whole constellation of nonprofits, charities, and various religious organizations that would gladly take in someone with that experience. he might be persona non grata in the Catholic part of that space, but the people management skills are pretty transferrable and he'd definitely be able to land a gig somewhere

as for financially, he'd probably be looking at a sidegrade in the nonprofit world, but he could definitely go work HR for some company and be making 6 figures easy if he actually cared about his bank account. there is a whole clergy to corporate HR pipeline that he could funnel into as well.
