No matter how much paperwork I process, it never goes away. It only increases.
Welcome! Trouble's brewing again in Dream Land, and it's up to Kirby to… no, wait, wrong franchise and wrong dream world, THAT Dream Land isn't even an isekai! Instead, let's talk about That Time I Woke Up In Dream World: Let's Play Atelier Sophie 2!

The girl in the front looks awfully familiar. Don't tell me…

That is, in fact, Sophie Neuenmuller, starring once more in Atelier Sophie 2: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Dream (PS4/Switch/PC)! This, the 23rd entry in the long-running Atelier series, got a worldwide release in February 2022—the first ever for an Atelier game! This series has made it! :toot:

In fall 2021, multiple years after the Mysterious trilogy concluded with Atelier Lydie & Suelle: The Alchemists and the Mysterious Paintings, I certainly wasn't expecting Gust to revisit the Mysterious setting, much less that Sophie would star in another game like Ryza did. Where Atelier Ryza 2 was released right after Ryza's first game as a direct sequel set four years after the events therein, Atelier Sophie 2 is set shortly before the events of Atelier Firis and longer yet before the events of Atelier Lydie & Suelle.

Where most Atelier games have multiple endings, Sophie's first game has just the one wherein she leaves her hometown with her good friend and mentor Plachta, setting out to follow her late grandmother's footsteps by taking the Alchemist Certification Exam in a distant burg. Sophie 2 happens when the duo get isekai'd somewhere along the way and arrive in Erde Wiege, a dream world where no one ages and everyone has indefinite time to pursue their dreams and ambitions before they return to the real world, whatever locale and era they hail from.

What twists does Sophie 2 take with the Atelier formula? How are you going to cover the game?

Like with most Atelier titles from Shallie onward, Sophie 2 has no time limit to speak of. Having come out after the first two Ryza games, the game's exploring and gathering will look very familiar to anyone who played either. At the same time, it makes a (welcome, imo) return to the series' traditional turn-based combat, with a frontline and a rear guard like several of the other pre-Ryza titles. For crafting and combat, the game starts off with a returning Atelier protagonist with all the combat prowess and alchemic skill she had at the end of her home game, and that has implications for the combat and alchemy in a second game starring her. Still, when it comes to how the game does alchemy, there's a curveball waiting in the wings and we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

The game's story is short and sweet, but it has a very deep and addictive crafting system that gets the player to spend an inordinate amount of time optimizing bombs and weapons and you are going to love it and want to do it. I'll be sure to cover the ins and outs of what makes this game's crafting special, as well as the obligatory character arcs start to finish. Luckily for me, Sophie 2 has a very small and focused cast of named characters, especially compared to your baseline Atelier game. Hell, Ryza 3 in early 2023 has more party members alone than Sophie 2 has named characters! I suppose that comes with the territory of having a much more star-studded VO cast than your baseline Atelier game too.

So this game is set between Sophie 1 and Firis/L&S? How will you handle spoilers?

The Mysterious trilogy concluded in 2018, so we're talking about three games that have been out for 4+ years and an eternity in COVID time by now. Talking about what happens in the OG Mysterious trilogy without spoiler tags is fair game in this thread. There's absolutely nothing, not a single thing in Firis or Lydie & Suelle that so much as hints at the existence of a dream world isekai in the Mysterious trilogy's setting, let alone anything that would seriously spoil plot beats or character arcs for this game. That having been said, Sophie 2 touches on the cast of Sophie 1 and some major plot beats in Sophie 1 within the first 30 minutes or so of playtime, so if you haven't played Sophie 1 but are interested in it and really don't want to be spoiled on anything pertaining to that game, I'd advise you against following this LP.

As for this game, its place in the Mysterious timeline means there's only one possible way it can end: after some time and somehow, Sophie and Plachta leave the isekai and return to their travels in the real world. They then go to an isolated mining town where Sophie meets Firis and takes her in as her apprentice, Sophie passes the certification exam like her grandmother before her, and some years after that, they arrive in the city where Lydie and Suelle live, and it's there that Sophie and Plachta's storyline finally comes to a conclusion. (I'd know a thing or two about that.)

Now, as for that somehow and what elapses during that some time? I think it's produced the best Atelier game in a generation, and that's what I'd like for you to keep mum about or talk about in spoiler tags if you really need to talk about it. Well, with one exception: that lady behind Sophie who looks a hell of a lot like her? Anyone with a pulse can put two and two together and figure out that they're related, and I won't begrudge anyone talking about who she is or what her relation to Sophie is before her actual introduction.

Part 1: The World of Dreams

Taboo

Music: A Familiar Scent

Well that certainly doesn’t sound like it has any implications for the events of the game. Stepping away from this girl’s monologue on whatever taboo she broke to meet her special someone, let us cut away to the title character…

The Dream Tree and the Dream World

Music: Snow Melting in Your Palm

Wow! Look at that! Plachta, look how big it is!

Indeed, Sophie. It’s certainly impressive, isn’t it?

But it doesn’t look alive…Is it the same tree as the one you saw in your dream?

Not quite. The tree I saw was more … Well … Vibrant.

Hmm … If only Oskar was here. Just where on earth did he get to?

Heh. He must have left to follow the voices of the plants he heard somewhere.

Oskar being Sophie’s tubby childhood friend and one of the initial party members in her home game. Sophie and Plachta will eventually reunite with a very skinny Oskar during the events of Atelier Firis.

That does sound like him. Hey, let’s take a look a little closer.

Yes, we might be able to learn something.

Music: So Much Fun

Music: The Truth’s Key

Whoa … It looks even bigger up close! We’ve travelled around a lot, but this has to be the biggest tree I’ve ever seen!

So it is. I wonder why did this tree appear in my dream …

It’s pretty strange. Did you learn the way here from the dream as well?

I must have. Otherwise, I don’t think we would ever have found this place, buried so deep in the forest… It’s like my dream was leading me here … I wonder if I’ve been here before?

Plachta?

It’s nothing. Shall we look around some more?

Before they can look around more…

What–?!

Plachta!

Music: Headwind

Nnngh!

At this rate–

No way! … It’ll be okay! … I’m going to save you!

Just like that, it’s like Sophie and Plachta were never here!

Hey, that voice sounds familiar. From the beginning of this update…

Avant Opening

Music: Syndetos - Suzuyu
And with that, the opening sequence rolls!

That looks like the very same tree where Sophie and Plachta got isekai’d…

…Even if it very clearly isn’t the same location. And with no Plachta in sight.

Hey, what’s wrong? Are you okay?

Ngh… Plach … ta … *fade to black*

When Sophie comes to, she finds herself in…

Huh? Where am I?

Music: Jumping With Joy

Oh, good! You’re finally awake? Pirka! She’s awake!

Pirka is dressed very similarly to Corneria from Sophie 1 and L&S. That’s a neon-flashing hint as to her in-game function.

I’m okay … I … Where am I?

I found you passed out on the ground. Pirka and I carried you back here.

Passed out? I think … I was in a forest …

That’s right! Plachta! Was there anyone else with me when you found me?!

Was there?

No, just her.

Oh no … I’ve got to look for her! Um, thank you for helping me! But I have to get going now!

Just where do you plan on going? You don’t know anything about this world yet, do you?

This world?

It’s obvious to us that Sophie got isekai’d, but from her perspective, she found herself here in a totally normal shop with two totally normal people. She can’t be expected to know what’s befallen her yet.

Aha, just like I thought … I haven’t seen you around here before. How about you, Alette?

No, never.

Err, what do you mean by “this world”?

I think I’d react the same way if I learned I got ethered into Not Earth, too.

This should all have been explained to you before you came … Wasn’t it?

Not only did she get isekai’d, but she’s apparently the only one in this world who isn’t in on it. No wonder she’s even more confused.

Well, it’s not so easy to understand out of the blue. Let’s start at the beginning. I know it’s a little belated, but let me introduce myself. I’m Pirka, the owner of this store.

And I’m Alette Claretie, a merchant and procurer of fine goods. If there’s anything you ever need, all you’ve got to do is ask!

I-I’m Sophie Neuenmuller. I’m on a journey with Plachta …

Is this Plachta the person you’re looking for?

Yes … I’ve got to find her right away!

Now, now. Calm down.

You’re right. Sophie, if you’re feeling up for it, how about we head outside?

Music: When The Sun Comes Out

Let it not be said that Sophie doesn’t like what she’s seeing here.

What is this place?

I knew it. Sophie, you haven’t met Elvira, have you?

Elvira? Who’s that?

To be fair to Sophie, it’s not like that girl who told her “Welcome to my land of dreams!” gave a name before dumping her off.

How strange. Elvira should have explained everything to you before you arrived here …

Err … Umm …

Ah, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to confuse you. This may seem a little sudden, but do you believe in other worlds?

I always figured that getting isekai’d would be an insanity-inducing experience; psychosis feels like a natural outcome of getting whisked away from everyone and everything you know and ending up in a fantasy world.

This is Erde Wiege, the Land of Dreams. Right now, we’re in Roytale, the town where everyone who comes to this world lives.

Um … This is a joke, right? This place just looks like an ordinary town.

Though in Sophie’s case, she's from medieval fantasy Germany and got isekai'd to another world that looks exactly like medieval fantasy Germany, so the contrast is probably less jarring for her than it would be for someone who came from modern Japan or whatever.

Ahaha. Well, I guess it doesn’t look very extraordinary around here.

(It doesn't really seem like Pirka and Alette are lying to me … Not to mention that vortex … That was definitely not normal. … Could this really be another world? But then where is Plachta?)

Speaking of which. How did you get here, Sophie?

How … I don’t really know myself. There was a giant tree deep in the forest, but when we got near it … this huge vortex appeared and sucked us up.

A giant tree and a vortex …

I don’t know anything about a vortex, but do you think she means the Dream Tree?

Very likely. And considering where we found Sophie, that must be it.

Where you found me … Please, take me there! Plachta might still be somewhere nearby!

All right. I didn’t see anyone else, but perhaps with the three of us … Ah, but first, I should give you this.

A map?

Take it. You’ll feel a lot better with something to help you get your bearings.

Thank you, Miss Alette!
Music: Searching

You don’t need to “Miss” me. Alette is fine.

Really? Well, thank you, Alette.

Now, set course for the Dream Tree, double time!

Yay!

Y-yay … Lead the way!

Music: Somewhere In Between

Sophie came to in Pirka’s shop, so makes sense that once we’re finally in control, it’s in the Commercial District. Anyway, that blue door in the southwest corner is where we should be headed.

Music: Kerria Yamabuki

Still thinking about how it doesn’t look much different from your normal world?

Yeah … I mean, everyone just looks like normal people.

That’s because we are. Everyone here came from the same world you did.

Huh? Really?

Really-really.

The dreams we see when we’re asleep are called “dream visions” in this world. Elvira uses our dream visions to see the dreams we deeply wish would come true.

If she takes a particular interest in a dream, she will lead its owner to Erde Wiege. She has countless dream visions to search through, so we’re all lucky to be chosen.

Besides, this world is kind of unique. No matter how much time passes, none of us grow old. For those with personal goals, this place really is a dream world.

How’s that? Feeling more informed?

Haha. Just try to understand what you can. In any case, let’s head to the Dream Tree first.

It’s the Residential District, but there’s still plenty of street stalls about. I guess Roytale doesn’t have particularly anal zoning ordinances.

One steep climb later…

That tree!

Have you seen it before?

Yes! It was this exact one! I was looking at it with Plachta!

No answer …

Let’s search for her! Between the three of us, we’re bound to find something!

You’re right. She might have lost consciousness somewhere, just like Sophie.

Thank you … both of you.

Music: Casting Shadows
You can probably tell from the sound of this track how well the search went.

No luck …

Maybe someone has already taken her in?

I’d like to think so, but …

We call it the Dream Tree. It is said that the Dream Goddess Elvira resides near this tree. Whether that’s true or not, I don’t have a clue. Nobody has ever seen Elvira on this side.

This side?

Everyone speaks with her once, just before coming to this world. Although it’s a little hard to see her clearly. She’s like a vague figure shrouded in light.

Aside from that, Elvira never appears in front of humans, so none of us have seen her properly. But there’s no questioning her goddess powers!

A goddess of dreams, huh? But I never met this goddess … And neither of you fell into a vortex?

That part is strange. I’ve never heard of that before.

I guess you probably can’t just take our word for all this other world stuff, huh …

But I don’t really think either of you are lying to me … Besides, there wasn’t any town or altar nearby the giant tree we saw … But this tree is definitely the same one. … So, I guess I kind of do believe you …

Haha, I’m glad you’re willing to trust us, even a little.

If this really is a different world, it’s even more important to find Plachta right away.

How about we try asking some of the people in town? Someone might have found her and taken her to Roytale, like we did for you.

Sorry, I need to get back to my store. But I’ll be sure to ask my customers as well. I’ll let you know right away if I hear anything.

Got it. All right, Sophie, let’s go!

Going back to town…

Music: Brandished Blade

Oh no. Here comes a headache.

Huh? What do you mean?

Hey, if it isn’t Alette! Don’t usually see you around here.

I needed to visit the Dream Tree.

Why? Planning to climb it?

Of course not! Stop talking like I’m a little kid!

Hahaha, my bad. With how you act, I forget sometimes.

Is that supposed to make it any better?! Sheesh.

Um …

Huh? Ain’t seen you around here before. A newbie?

Yeah, this is Sophie. She just arrived, but it seems like she never met Elvira on the way.

Seriously? That happens? Huh. Sophie, was it? I’m Olias Enders. I’m the world’s strongest super bodyguard! If you ever need saving, just call my name. You won’t regret it.

I know he looks like a palette swapped Mathias from L&S, but he’s actually a very different character! You’ll see as the game goes on.

The world’s strongest … super bodyguard?

Just ignore his spiel. More importantly … Olias, have you heard of someone called Plachta?

Plachta?

She’s family to me. We were sucked in by a vortex together, so she’s probably come this way!

Well, dunno if she’s your family, but if it’s Plachta the alchemist, I’ve heard of her.

:toot:

Wait, really?!

Sure. Showed up recently, and she’s been cooped up researching in her atelier ever since. I’ve seen her drop by Kati’s place for dinner a couple times, though. Ain’t that right, Alette? You know, the one with white hair and a tail? Some kinda accessories that look like ears?

White hair and a tail? That fits the profile alright :toot:

Aha … hahaha… SHE’S Plachta? Guess I never caught her name …

Really, you …

It’s not my fault! People come and go all the time, I’m not gonna remember everyone!

People leave? So there’s a way to get back to the world we came from?

Sure. The moment you achieve your heart’s desire, you’ll be sent right back home. I guess this all is pretty crazy if you don’t get a proper explanation in the beginning … That was not nice of our lady goddess.

So everyone in Erde Wiege is here by choice, Sophie aside. They all agreed to come, have all the time in the world to pursue their goal, and can leave at will. Sounds like a pretty sweet deal as far as isekai settings go. Sophie and Plachta’s deal aside.

So how do I get home if I’ve never even met Elvira?

Huh … Don’t ask me. I don’t think that’s ever happened before. Whatever’s going on, you must be something pretty special.

I never asked to be special …

Anyhow, first we gotta find Plachta. You two just follow me, and I’ll take you to her.

Really? Thank you, Olias!

How lucky! You’ll get to see your friend again soon.

Yeah, I never thought we’d find her so quickly. It’s a huge relief.

(Plus, I thought Plachta couldn’t do alchemy anymore. I wonder what’s changed?)

Well, that key piece of information aside, Olias is going to take the gang to Plachta. Half an hour in and Sophie’s already gonna be reunited with her and all’s well that ends well, right?

Right?

Part 2: Dreams of Another "Her"

Reminiscing of Kirchen Bell

Music: One More Time! (From Let’s Try It!)

This place is always so quiet. Hardly anyone ever comes here.

Hardly anyone’s got a reason to. Nothin’ but old ruins around these parts.

I like the peace and quiet. It’s just like being back in Kirchen Bell …

Kirchen Bell? Where’s that?

It’s my hometown!

Hate to wake you, but we’re almost there. Look, you can see the atelier now.

Oh! Right, of course. Let’s go see Plachta!

After this, the game dumps a bunch of info cards on Sophie 1’s cast on us. First…

Sophie starts the game off at Adventurer Lv 20 and Alchemy Lv 50, the maximum Adventurer and Alchemy level in Sophie 1 respectively. 200 Cole is a pittance; poor girl lost all her money in that vortex.

…But he’s very clearly not appearing in this game.

L&S takes place in Merveille, the capital of Adalet (spelled in that game with one T). By then, Julio is the captain of the royal knights and gets to beat the prince’s rear end in training every day.

This is to the end of reaching the ear of her missing father. Eventually, she hears that he’s living somewhere near Adalet; you can read the last chapter updates of the L&S LP if you want to know how this plotline ends.
Speaking of, Corneria says there that Sophie has not returned to Kirchen Bell once in the intervening years between Sophie 1 and L&S, much to Monika’s consternation.

Atelier Plachta

Music: Take It Easy

Wow! It’s a proper alchemist’s workshop!

Huh? Wait a minute, isn’t this place …?

Olias knocks, and…

Eh? That voice …
That voice indeed. It’s unmistakably Plachta’s voice, and yet, it doesn’t quite sound like the Plachta Sophie knows.

C’mon, don’t keep her waiting.

… This is … Plachta’s atelier …
( … But … Why does it feel so strange?)
(It’s completely different from my old atelier … But somehow, it feels just like home.)

wait, hold up

This definitely isn’t the Plachta we know!

Uhm … Isn’t this supposed to be Plachta’s atelier?

Um … You are…?

Music: Thread of Dreams

She seems none too happy at the moment, but hey, I’d also be at least a little bit annoyed if I were in her shoes.
Fun fact: the other Plachta has a tail to help her doll body balance itself. This one just…has one, despite still being human.

Is it a wrong Plachta?

W-well, yes … She definitely isn’t the Plachta I’m looking for, but … But for some reason, I also don’t feel like we’ve got entirely the wrong person …

How many times do I have to tell you that I AM Plachta? If you don’t actually need anything, could you please leave? I need to get back to my research …

Ah! Sorry! I’m Sophie Neuenmuller. I’m an alchemist, just like you! I’m looking for someone called Plachta. We only just came here, but we got separated …

Plachta? … And you are an alchemist? Can you tell me more?

This other Plachta needs a nice, lengthy explanation. Once Sophie obliges…

… I see. So you somehow came to Erde Wiege without meeting Elvira.

That’s right … I don’t want to think about what could have happened if Alette hadn’t found me.

And you do not seem to be lying about this Plachta person …

Naturally. Atelier protagonists are, to a woman, very earnest and terrible at lying.

Huh? Why do you doubt me being an alchemist?

That should be obvious. Alchemy isn’t a trade that just anyone can master. It demands skill, natural talent, and the curiosity to constantly pursue new creations!

… That true?

How should I know?!

This Plachta’s right. In the Mysterious series’ world, alchemy is an ability you either have at birth or don’t. Fast forwarding to L&S, it’s one that a good chunk of the cast can do while others, like Mathias, can’t learn it no matter how much time others spend trying to teach them. And the setting does have scammers pretending to be alchemists, like one in L&S who tries putting grass in water and calling it medicine.

It’s also something you have to be human to do, hence why Doll Plachta can’t synthesize. She was still eminently capable of getting Sophie up to speed, though.

You call yourself an alchemist, but you have shown me nothing to prove your claim.

W-well, that’s because almost all my things got lost in the vortex … But I’m not lying! I really am an alchemist!

Well hey, can’t just start Sophie off with all the broken endgame bombs and equipment she had from her home game, right?

Then how about this? You can use the tools in my atelier to synthesize something. If you succeed, I will accept your alchemy credentials.

You want me to do it now? I really need to be looking for Plachta …

Really? You mean it?

You need somewhere to stay, don’t you? I think it’s a rather generous deal.

What do you want to do, Sophie?

… All right. It’s a deal. It’ll be much easier to look for Plachta if I have an atelier to work in. I’ll be right back once I’ve gotten everything I need!

I recommend the grasslands just outside of town. They’re ideal for gathering.

Mind if I help out? It’ll be way quicker with the two of us.

Wouldn’t exactly be heroic of me to let the new kid wander off unsupervised now, would it? Count yourself lucky! The world’s best bodyguard has your back–and he’ll do it for free!

Really? Thank you both! I’m counting on you!

Music: Nice to Meet You!
As you can tell, Alette is a martial artist of the kick and flip variety.

Meanwhile Olias has a rifle equipped with a sword, which he’s swinging around here. Yes, I know he didn’t shoot; think of it this way, he has the good sense to not blast a hole in Plachta’s roof.

And before we go gathering, it would be prudent to hit the save button–after 40 minutes of gameplay, I can finally do that!

We take this shortcut back to the Commercial District and from there, we venture into the grasslands Plachta recommended.

Wondrous field

Wow, look at all these herbs! I’ve never even read about some of them, let alone seen them!

Starting to believe this isn’t the world you know?

Hehe, a little. Right, time to get gathering!

Hm? Hold on a minute, Sophie. See that?

That’s it? This’ll be a cakewalk.

A m-m-monster? Elvira brings monsters here too?!

She doesn’t have anything to do with it. These monsters are born here.

See, Erde Wiege is built from people’s dream visions. And, obviously, people dream about monsters. So they’ve been part of this world since the start.

Checks out. I mean in real life, we dream about all sorts of hosed up poo poo, don't we? Still, Puni and rabbits are pretty pedestrian for Atelier monsters.

I see. I guess we’ll have to fight for some of our materials, then.

Doesn’t seem to scare you much. Guess some alchemists must do their share of fightin’.

So it seems … Not that I’m complaining or anything. Those monsters won’t know what hit them! So what do you actually want us to look for?

I was thinking of making cloth, so … silver web, rabbit fur, and any plants you can find …

Alright! Let’s get gathering!

And we can get the rabbit fur by killing that rabbit, so…

Music: Warbler

Well, well, well! Think you’re a match for us, do you?

Don’t just jump in and start swingin’! You gotta use your brain! When there’s this many of them, we gotta try and take them out one by one.

Got it! Let’s do this!

Yay, we got one!

Great! Keep it up, and we’ll wipe the floor with them in no ti–

Alette! Look out! I think you made ‘em angry!

Here’s a nice QoL improvement, we can see who the enemies are going to aggro now by pressing the R button! And in this case, just as Olias said…

Eek! You’re right! Wh-wh-what do I do?!

It’s all right! Just focus on defending yourself!

The game wants us to use Sophie’s AoE defensive buff…

(In practice, you’re probably not going to be using the solo block option much, if at all. But for extended tutorial’s sake…)

Whew … My life just flashed before my eyes …

girl that did like 5% of your max HP in damage

drat it, they just keep on comin’! There’s gotta be a way to knock ‘em down quick …

That sounds like a job for me!

You know, we probably could have finished this battle immediately if the game had just let us chuck the Craft off the bat.

Music: Winning Streak

You know, you’re pretty good in a scrap. You really sure you’re an alchemist?

Hehe. Gathering materials can get dangerous, you know. We have to protect ourselves somehow!

There’s no way you got this good just from picking herbs. Maybe alchemists are all like this …

If you mean who I think you mean, I always figured she was a special case … but who knows?

Looking at the rest of the series? Not really. Don’t gently caress with alchemists, especially ones that have a game’s worth of experience under their belt.

Ehehe, I’m not sure. My grandmother and Plachta are the only other alchemists I really know …

Music: Radiant Dew
Needless to say, the rabbit dropped some fur for us. For Cloth, we’ll get our grass here.

…and our last ingredient for Cloth is Spider Web.

Got everything you needed?

Yep! And in record time, thanks to you two. Let’s head back to Plachta!

Two Plachtas

Welcome back. You’ll find the cauldron over there.

Thanks! Time to start synthesizing!

Music: Sunny Piacere

Like with the rest of the Mysterious games, each ingredient has an array of 3x3 components of five elements. Like with L&S in particular, you get better effects by hitting higher thresholds with each element.

We start off with a 5x5 grid to play with. If these components all just go on the blank tiles, we’ll hit the thresholds for DEF+3 and SPD+3.

Like with L&S, you get an extra effect level when you place a component on a tile whose color matches it.

And like with Sophie 1 and Firis, if you place one component on top of another, the bottom one gets nullified. Space allowing, you can rotate components so that… doesn’t happen. Anyway, after doing that with this component…

You might have noticed some of the components have one or more stars. In addition to hitting higher effect levels by linking stars of the same element together…

…This also increases the element’s max effect level for the synthesis. In this case, it lets us max out the Light effect level.

You do this by fully filling out rows and columns on the synthesis panel.

Voila! And we can transfer three traits of our choosing right out the gate. Trait transfer isn’t gatekept behind alchemy level like in L&S, nor is it an effect you have to try and hit like in the Ryza games. Nor do I have to worry about Transfer Points like in the Arland games and latter two Dusk games.

Um, yep. Yep, I think so.

You figure alchemy requires intense concentration and attention to detail, and Sophie is pretty good at committing both despite Alette breathing down her neck.

Plachta, we’re done! Come and take a look!

Uh-oh. She looks like she just swallowed a bug.

Oh … Is the quality maybe too low?

… No. No, there’s nothing wrong with it. The materials around town aren’t of particularly high quality, so I wasn’t expecting perfection. Honestly, I’m impressed you managed to work with them at all. In someone else’s cauldron, no less.

Come to think of it, you did say you’d never even seen some of the herbs before.

Yeah, I guess I got lucky. I tried using it, and it worked out just like I’d hoped!

You have proven yourself an alchemist–and a far more skilled one than I expected, at that. I apologize for not believing you sooner.

There’s nothing to apologize for. I couldn’t expect you to believe me without any proof.

Thank you for understanding. As I promised, my atelier is yours to use as you wish.

Looks like you’ve gotten on her good side.

Yahoo! You did it, Sophie!

Thanks, you guys! I couldn’t have done it without you!

Oh, that’s right. About this Plachta you’re searching for … You said that the two of us are alike somehow?

Yeah. I’m not sure if I can explain it very well, but you feel very similar.

I have a theory about that. If I’m right …

Huh?! What?! But how is that possible?

You see, Erde Wiege summons its inhabitants from across space AND time.

Wait, what?!

Alette … Don’t tell me you ain’t told her …

What, you expect me to explain every little thing?

Here, you can encounter people not only people from what you would consider the past, but also people from what you would call the future. So, you see, it might be possible for there to be two of us, but only if …

Exactly. My theory is that the Plachta you’re searching for is my future self.

Well, that would explain why Plachta seemed to be drawn to the Dream Tree back in the real world. If this Plachta is any indication, she was, in fact, in Erde Wiege as a youth. Still, why didn’t she say so? It happened half a millennium ago for her, but you’d figure this experience would be unforgettable, right?

You sure that’s possible? Even I ain’t heard of anyone doubling up like that.

That’s why it’s only a theory. For now, we’re lacking in proof. Although by the same token, we can’t say it’s false either.

And the only way to prove it one way or another is …

To find Sophie’s Plachta!

Indeed. What a curious state of affairs … If nothing else, I would like to see if I’m correct, so we definitely should look for the Plachta Sophie is searching for.

Yeah … But there isn’t much we can do but go around asking if anyone has seen her …

If you’re looking for new leads, might I suggest visiting the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion?

Oh, good call. Kati might have heard something while we’ve been out.

What’s the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion? And who’s Kati?

One of Roytale’s old guards. She knows everything about everyone.

If you can catch her while she’s awake, anyway …

We should get going. We can find the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion in the Commercial District.

From the direction of Plachta’s atelier, the tavern is right around the corner.

The Proprietress and the Other Ramizel

Music: A Serving of Rest

It’s definitely a bustling establishment, but then again it’s the only tavern we know of in town.

Behind the counter is our proprietress, Kati.

Welcome! Oh? It’s unusual to see the three of you together.

Hey there, Gnome. Yeah, it’s been a weird day.

Be that as it may … Kati, there’s something we hoped you could help us with.

Is there now? And who’s that girl behind you?

Oh, right! I’m Sophie! Nice to meet you!

This is actually about her. I’m afraid it’s a little complicated, but here’s the general gist …

tl;dr Sophie didn’t come here the usual way and her friend is missing

Music: Painted Emotions

I see … And now you’re stranded here. That must have been hard …

I’m all right, Miss … Um …

Oh, how silly of me. I forgot to introduce myself. Ahem! I’m Katrina Balbastre, the proprietress of the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion. But you can call me Kati. Everyone does.

And I’m Gnome Dumortier. I just help Miss Kati out around the tavern.

Though we all know he’s the one who really runs the place …

You should also know that Kati is effectively Roytale’s unofficial deputy mayor. I thought that if anyone would be able to help us, it would be her. However …

This time, I’m afraid I’m clueless. I’ve never heard of this other Plachta person. If you’re out of options, it might be easiest just to ask Elvira herself.

You mean the Goddess of Dreams? But I thought she didn’t show herself to people …

Not usually, no. However, there is one person who knows how to find her. The first person to meet Elvira and the leader of Roytale–

Oh, the leader of this town is named Ramizel?

… No. There is no way …

I mean, we already know there’s a young Plachta from, relative to Sophie’s time, the very distant past here. The Ramizel here being a younger version of Sophie’s grandmother wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility. How many Ramizels have there ever been in the Mysterious world, anyway?

Hm? Is something wrong?

Eh? Oh, no, nothing! So where can we find her?

That’s the tricky part. She’s out of town right now, taking care of some business.

Do you have any idea when she will be back?

Unfortunately not, but I can find out where she’s gone.

I guess we can show you around Roytale while we wait …

Are you sure you’ll have time, Alette?

… Huh?

Music: Bam!

So you really had forgotten … And here I thought I told you it was urgent … Well, I suppose I can’t really blame you, given that you were off helping Sophie …

I’m sorry, all right! I’ll do it! Just don’t get mad!

Um … What kind of request is this?

This tavern has a noticeboard set up where the townspeople can post requests. They write down the details and the reward on offer, and anyone who sees one can take it on.

For example, I needed materials from a particular monster, so I asked Alette to fetch them for me.

Gust-chan cameo sighted

You mean it?

Of course! You’ve done nothing but help me out since I got here. I have to return the favor.

Let me join you as well. I would like to contribute however I can.

Thank you both so much! Alchemists have gotta be the kindest people in the world!

Sorry, but I’ve got my own jobs to see to. Later!

drat, Olias ditched us the moment were about to do Alette a solid

Well, who needed you anyway?! Blockhead! Cheapskate!

Shall we start over from the beginning? It might be helpful for Sophie to see how everything works. That way she’ll be able to take on her own requests whenever she wants.

Good idea. Are you listening, Sophie? First, you look for requests on the noticeboard …

She has a giant robot arm that punches and shoots things for her? Alchemy 500 years ago must have been some real good poo poo!

So yeah, Kati’s ingame function is as the questmaster, like Lisa, Keina and Lionela in Lulua or Zephine in Ryza 2 or Horst from Sophie 1.
And it is kind of our fault that Alette’s found herself in this time crunch, so it’s the least we can do to take her job on for her.

Now it’s officially yours to turn in. See, that wasn’t so hard! The request details are all written down on the application form in case you ever need a reminder. Since it’s your first time, I’ve also noted down where those monsters can be found.

Got it. We’ll be back before you know it!

And now that we’re back in the field and I can actually gather…

Like in the Ryza games, gathering ranks have been implemented! Higher gathering ranks lets you find new materials. For whacking things with staves or picking things from the ground, you raise your gathering rank by investing Sophie’s Ability Points, which you get by leveling up in combat or fulfilling various other goals.

For every other means of gathering, you craft a tool for which you hit a particular effect threshold for Rank 2 or 3 gathering. Like with a sickle, which I don’t have yet, so no harvesting wheat for Sophie.

These floating stones enable fast travel to particular parts of field zones. I have not yet unlocked fast travel, so I can’t use these yet. Anyway, our target is in the next area, so moving on…

Combat 101

Hey, isn’t that what we’re looking for? All right, buster, say your praye–

Hold on a moment, Alette. Let’s come up with a plan before we go charging in. I think we should make use of our numerical advantage and fight as a team.

A team, huh? I like the sound of that!

She keeps cool under pressure, just like Plachta … All right, let’s do this together!

Music: Whisp

Now it is time to show off our teamwork.

And one of these special commands is having someone in the rear switch places with whoever’s getting aggro’d and take the hit. Where in the OG Mysterious games you could only have someone else in the front line take the hit for the protagonist(s), Sophie 2 lets you do this for anyone. Well, so long as you have enough TP and someone in the rear guard.

Thanks, Plachta! I was nearly toast! That sure looked like it hurt, though …

I’m perfectly fine .. Although I would prefer not to take many more hits like that.

Next, let’s try out a combo attack!

I agree. Listen carefully, you two. Here’s what we do …

Pressing L lets us pick a rear guard partner for a Twin Action, and…

And Sophie and Alette swap places, though the battle’s already over. Twin Actions are some good poo poo–they do more damage than normal AND they have reduced MP usage! Anyway, most combat in this game revolves around Twin Actions and another soon-to-be-introduced mechanic.

That was awesome! We were totally in sync!

You can always trust Plachta to come up with a plan!

Hehe … Anyway, it seems we have what we need. We ought to report back to Kati.

I’ll take the time to note that stats are ridiculously high across the board in Sophie 2. At level 20, Sophie in this game has much higher stats than she does in L&S, where she joins at level 25 and storywise is described as quite possibly the most powerful alchemist alive. And this is without any gear to really juice up her stats! By endgame, it won’t be outlandish for some party members to break 1000 in certain stats.

Anyway, Equipment Cost: we don’t have any items yet and had no time to synthesize any before coming out here, but as with Sophie 1, each party member has their own inventory. Each item has an Equipment Cost value attached to it. You can tell from the numbers here that Alette can only carry a very limited inventory while our alchemists can carry and use four items of my choosing. Certain items also are only usable by alchemists and can’t be equipped by the others even if their Equipment Cost allows for it.

Now, back to town…

Whereabouts

This looks like everything I asked for. Good work, you three.

With Sophie and Plachta helping, it was no trouble at all!

Perhaps we finished a little TOO quickly … Should we give you some more time to look into things?

Ha! Don’t forget, I’m the best in the business. Go on, Gnome, tell them what we’ve learned.

We have found out where Ramizel must be. She went into Near-Forest. For Sophie’s benefit, that’s the forest beyond the grasslands just outside town.

I’m afraid we couldn’t find out what she’s doing out there. I hope a map of the area will make up for it.

Thank you, but I think Alette has already given me a map …

An old one, I’ll bet. This one’s hot off the presses.

That means we have to regularly update all our maps. This version just came out yesterday. Anyway, Near-Forest isn’t far, but it still has its fair share of monsters, so take care.

Crucially, this means I can now fast-travel!

But before we do any further exploring, it would help to craft some items.

Oh, right, for Atelier’s 25th anniversary, Gust and Bandai Namco did a collab between Sophie 2 and Tales of Arise. We have three party members and three accessories, so who do folks want to get what?

I always appreciate it when folks point it out for me, so I'm just doing the same :patriot:

I don't know a lot about the Mysterious Ateliers (outside watching like a half of a L&S playthrough offsite too long ago to remember much), so I don't really think I can add much to the discussion myself, but I'll be here!

As someone who does, definitely listen to Whisp and Warbler, they are both really, really good.

Warbler in particular sounds like something out of the first zone of a modern Sonic game.

Anyway, I think it says a lot about this game in particular that this was one of the few Atelier games I had to force myself to put down, and only because it was further screwing up my already screwed up sleep schedule. It's that addictive.

Assume I've not play an Atelier game before (except for one on the Vita that I put down in frustration because of just how tightly time limited it was) - where would you recommend I start.

The OP of the Atelier megathread has a pretty solid primer. If you'd rather not play with a time limit, I agree with its recommended starting points of L&S, Sophie 2, and Ryza 1 (caveat being that the Ryza games' combat is, uh, its own beast), and would also recommend Escha & Logy as a beginner-friendly title.

e: eschatology has a time limit, but it's so generous you'd have to actively try to flunk it and are likely to have many days left on the clock with nothing left to do

Sophie 1 is currently the best-selling title (also helps that it's gone on sale on Steam quite often), and a lot of people have started with it even if I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point.

Part 3: Dreams of the Sun and Rain

Returning to the field in earnest…

Oh, that’s right. Sophie, why don’t we use this opportunity to pick up anything that might become useful for synthesis on the way? This world is full of unique materials. It certainly wouldn’t hurt.

Good idea. Maybe I’ll even come up with some ideas for new recipes!

Huh, if you’re going to do that, I can help out too. Give me a shout if you see anything useful.

And with that, we can begin unlocking recipes! This early on, the conditions are pretty simple–pick flowers to unlock their respective colored neutralizers, smack enemies a few times to unlock the sickle, and whatnot. It gets more complicated later on.

Music: Dreamy Dew
The game will also helpfully notify you when you’ve made progress towards unlocking a recipe. For Golden Thread, in addition to Silver Web, I also need Cotton Wool…

…And after getting some, Sophie starts jotting in her notebook, meaning I can synthesize Golden Thread once I go back to the atelier. But for now, we need to follow Ramizel into the forest.

Ramizel’s Granddaughter

Music: Sewing Sunbeams

Whoa, it’s raining? But the sun was shining just a minute ago!

It’s always like this around here. The rain never lets up.

Always?

Remember, everything in Erde Wiege is built from people’s dream visions. If it was raining in the dream visions this area was made from, it’ll be raining here forever.

That sounds like a pretty depressing dream. And…

That’s so strange … This might be the most other-worldly thing I’ve heard up til now …

Haha. You can say that again.

Music: Sewing Starlight

Anyway, en route to that blue icon, now’s a good time to gather stuff.

Sophie can jump over a bunch of barrels to an island where there’s a chest with Ingot Bugs and some other things we can’t gather yet. Jumping over barrels or other steps is a common path when it's raining in this game.

The evil-ish red icon denotes the optional mini-boss, a wood golem, that I’m in no state to fight right now. Anyway, moving on to the destination…

Looks like we’re stuck. Unless anyone’s brought a bridge …

We can’t even be sure Ramizel came this way. We could easily have overlooked something.

Maybe you’re right. If we can’t cross, she probably couldn’t either.

Huh?

Alette? Have you found something?

Yeah! That’s it! It was ages ago now, but one time I saw Ramizel using it. She did something to this rock, and then the whole world kinda went shwoom! Then the rain stopped, and the river disappeared!

Shwoom …?

That seems hard to believe. The rain stopping is one thing, but an entire river drying up?

I mean hey, anything goes in this dream world!

It’s true, I’m telling you! I saw it with my own eyes!

If you’re right, we might still be on the right path …

But we still can’t cross the river … How about we head back to town and speak with Kati? She might know something we don’t.

That’s a good idea. If anyone can tell us more, it’s her.

Hey, Gnome! … Huh? Where is Kati?

I’m afraid she’s, uh, a little busy at the moment …

You’re all such workaholics … Can’t a girl take a break once in a while … Working is such a pain … Really … Zzz …

Ahaha … Um. Well, this is how Miss Kati is, so you probably should get used to it. Anyway, did you have any luck finding Miss Ramizel?

That’s why we’re here! See, there’s this river …

The rain in the forest … I see. Perhaps this is my fault. I should have told you about changing the weather since you were going out that way.

Does that mean Alette is right, then? There’s a way to stop the rain?

Seeee! I was right all along!

Who would have thought? I’m sorry for doubting you, Alette.

So how do we get our hands on one of these special tools?

They aren’t easy to come by, sadly. Only a few people are permitted to own them. You’d need someone who is widely trusted, someone who often has business outside of town …

Well, this is a stroke of luck. Olias, didn’t you have a pair of those weather tools on hand?

Huh? drat right I do. Got one for the rain and one for the sun.

That’s just what we need! Could we borrow them for a little while? We’ll bring them right back!

Whoa, hold on there. These things are probably worth more than I am.

I know they’re valuable, but we need them to get through the Near-Forest. We’re looking for Ramizel …

Near-Forest? Oh, I get you. Trouble with the rain, eh? Fine, I’ll let you use ‘em. There’s just one small problem.

Ehh?! You mean we can’t actually use them?!

Nah, I just need Ramizel to recharge them. Then they’ll be right as … Well, rain. Only I can’t seem to track her down, so for the moment they’re dead as doornails.

No way …

Um … When Olias says Ramizel can recharge them, does he mean with alchemy?

That’s right. I’m hardly an expert, but it requires some kind of special synthesis process.

Ehh? You mean … Ramizel’s an alchemist?!

Sure she is. Didn’t I say?

Music: Like When We Were Kids

Um, Gnome? How old is Ramizel?

: Erm … I think she mentioned that she was in her early twenties.

Then she wouldn’t be married yet, so … Her full name isn’t Ramizel Erlenmeyer, is it?

So it is. How did you know?

About that … You see, my late grandmother was an alchemist …

Wha …! You’re saying you’re Ramizel’s granddaughter?!

You’re kidding, right? Ramizel’s no old lady! She doesn’t even have kids, let alone grandkids!

It might not be impossible … if she has come to Erde Wiege from the time of her youth. People gather here from many different ages. You cannot say it couldn’t happen.

The OG Mysterious trilogy made a point about how much Sophie’s grandmother meant to her and how lonely she was after her death. You could visit her grave in Sophie 1, there’s an old alchemist acquaintance of hers in Firis who Sophie wants to talk to to hear about the old days, and at the end of Sophie’s events in L&S, she takes the time to tell her grandmother she’s surrounded by friends and has found happiness at last. Sophie DX added more postgame material to really drive home Sophie's bond with her late grandmother; in hindsight, I suppose this was to prime players for Sophie 2.

Anyone who’s taken a chem course (and I sure did as a premed washout) would recognize that Ramizel’s maiden name, Erlenmeyer, comes from the flask.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Sophie. Don’t forget this is only speculation.

… You’re right. I mean, she wouldn’t even know I exist yet. Oh, I almost forgot! Olias, back to the weather tools … Do you mind if I try charging them myself with alchemy?

You sure about that? You know how much they’re worth, right?

Of course. Don’t worry. I’ll need a little time, but I think I can figure out how it’s done.

Fine, see what you can do. I’ll be as happy as you to have ‘em working again.

Soon, we, too, will be able to change the weather at a whim! But first…

Oh, that reminds me. Have you paid a visit to Pirka’s shop yet?

Pirka’s shop?

I know she runs one, but I have not had a chance to visit yet.

I see. I’d certainly recommend it, especially to an alchemist.

Yeah, Pirka’s place is something else! You’d never believe what you can find! See, most shops only stock materials from town … Oh, but I don’t wanna spoil the surprise!

Eeeh! But now you’ve got me curious!

Is there something special about her stock …? Perhaps we should pay her a visit before we return to the atelier and find our for ourselves.

Well, if I’m headed to a shop, I need money, right? Luckily for me, just by picking up materials in the field, I can get a good deal of cash from Kati.

obligatory

Gnome said we should visit your store! He said you sell some special items here.

Hmm … I see what Gnome was saying. The stock here certainly seems more varied than elsewhere.

That’s my selling point! I source what I can from town, but I also go out and gather things myself.

What, in person?

Well, with Alette. We go gathering together and pick up whatever looks like it’ll sell.

But if you think you’ve already seen the last of this store’s wonders, think again!

Make … more? I’m not quite sure what you mean.

My!

You sound like you’ve seen this somewhere before, Sophie.

I sure have! Cory can do the same thing! She’s a friend of mine back in Kirchen Bell. You know, Pirka kind of reminds me of her, if I squint a bit. Maybe it’s her clothes …

Really? Then there’s a good chance your friend has some connection to my homeland. Not just anyone can use duplication, after all. It’s a special power passed down among my people.

Really? Wow … I bet Cory would love to hear about this!

In any case, it sounds like we’ll never want for useful items with you to help us out. Still, I’m curious about this duplication power. Mightily curious indeed …

Just so we’re clear, it’s a paid service. I AM running a business here!

Turn this on, and we’ll foot the bill for item usage whenever we go back to the atelier.

Pretty much. This place is stuck in sunny mode.

Well, I guess it’s better than endless rain.

True … Still, I’d appreciate a few showers from time to time, y’know.

Hm? Why’s that?

I’m growin’ veggies in my garden, but they need a decent amount of water. And waterin’ them myself every day’s a real pain in the neck. A bit of rain now and again would go a long way. Man, what I wouldn’t give for my own personal rain cloud …

Are you really planning to try to fix those tools? If something were to go wrong …

I’ll be careful. And besides … If this is something that will help me find Plachta …

She really means a lot to you, doesn’t she?

Of course! We’re family, after all.

… Fine, then. Do as you like. I won't get in your way. Just take care that it doesn’t blow up in your face.

Hahaha. Don’t worry. I won’t even touch them until I’m sure I know what I’m doing.

In sum, that means we’ve got a recipe to unlock! Anyway, you’ve probably seen that further down the recipe tree you go, there’s a lot of locks next to silhouetted items. You have to unlock adjacent recipes before you can unlock these ones. Take that node just below the Sunlight Heliodor, for instance; it's for a pickaxe. The condition to get the pickaxe's recipe is getting some Silvalia, the tier 2 ingot. But since I haven’t made the Heliodor yet, I can’t unlock the pickaxe's recipe and start synthesizing one, even if some Silvalia fell into Sophie’s lap right this instant.

So first, we need to make the Heliodor. And speaking of beating up Blue Puni…

Blue Puni are weak to electricity, so it would serve me well to stack all the yellow components I can onto a Lightning Bomb. Even though this is just okay for now, many upcoming enemies are weak to electricity, so it'll be very useful in the short term.

While I’m at it, might as well make a Grass Sickle too. Maxing out yellow on this one lets me gather at Rank 2 with it.

Unlike with the Ryza games, this is only usable on tall plants. I can’t walk up to a log or a bush, switch gathering material from Staff to Sickle, and use the Sickle on those gathering spots for different items than I would get from smacking with the Staff.

I can turn up the difficulty to Legendary…

And kill both Puni with both of these very well-crafted bombs.

Doing this gets me a nice fat drop of materials with better components and traits than I should be able to get starting out. Anyway, with that done, dialing the difficulty back down and headed back to the Dream Tree…

We can now synthesize this item! But as always in an Atelier game, gotta make the rounds once they’re available…

The Town of Roytale

C’mon, isn’t it obvious? I’m on the clock!

Wait, you run this store?

Yep! It’s nothing all that grand, but … It’s all mine! It is called “Alette’s Sundries” after all.

Huh. Actually, I thought you were working with Pirka over at her place.

Ahaha … Well, she did offer me my own corner at her shop. But since we live together, she already helps me out a lot. Borrowing space would be kinda, you know … Besides, if I wanna make a name for myself as a merchant, then I’ve gotta run my own business!

Hehe … That’s really impressive, Alette!

Ehehe … Well, since this place is called sundries, I stock all kinds of stuff you won’t find anywhere else. So, I’ll be expecting lots of business from you!

You’d figure gaining hands-on experience would be what counts the most in this setting, since unlike a following in Erde Wiege, Alette can actually take that home with her.

Music: On Sale Today

Anyway, Alette sells things you can find in the field. Sometimes, she’ll have something with good components and/or good traits.

Huh? Are you taking a nap, Pirka?

Should you really be asleep while your shop is open? Won’t you lose customers?

Worry not! I’ve taught myself to jump awake when I hear the jingle jangle of Cole! Basically, the customers are my own personal alarm clocks!

You can’t treat your customers like that! No one’s gonna buy from you if you keep that up!

It’s fine, it’s fine! My services are in too high a demand for that!

Don’t jinx it, what if Elvira invites Corneria over tomorrow to eat your lunch? But Sophie has other concerns…

Shouldn’t you be more careful with it? Won’t it make you shrink?

Eh? Shrink? Don’t be ridiculous, Sophie! That’s just silly!

Really? I thought for sure that duplication power came with side effects …

It does for Corneria, who faints (and shrinks) from overuse of her powers. L&S shows that this was what happened to her father; he used it so much that he shrank to the size of a bug.

Putting that aside, I oughta tell you that I’ve been eyeing up the art of alchemy! If I learn this alchemy thingy, think of all the goodies I could make, duplicate, and sell! It’s the perfect business strategy! What do you think?

Ahaha! If you’re really interested, then come by my atelier! I think it’s worth a try.

For real?! Alright, it’s a date! Just don’t get mad if I turn out to be a prodigy, okay?

yeah we’ll see about that

That’s right. Mine was a far more civilized process. I heard Elvira’s voice near the tree. She told me about this world, and I accepted her invitation. After that, I fell asleep. And when I came to, I found myself here, in Erde Wiege.

In my case, I was taking a stroll through a local park. The rest was just as Plachta described it.

So, you don’t even have to be near the Dream Tree to be summoned to Erde Wiege?

Right. There are a number of places where the ties between the worlds are especially strong. When someone with a dream Elvira particularly likes passes by, she calls out to them. Then, those who agree are brought here.

Huh, so that’s how it works …

This is the first time I’ve actually heard someone explain it. Hm, so there are special areas …

They’re not something you can see, though. I doubt you’d be able to find them even if you went looking.

Now, back to business!

Shared Atelier

The number of uses the Heliodor has whenever you synthesize it depends on the effect thresholds you hit. Unfortunately, I have a dearth of good red components and yellow components with links, so this is the best I can do for now.

Having +Use traits also helps, as those are applied to, well, the use count.

Honestly … I wasn’t sure you could do it. I’m impressed.

I’m lucky I just had to recharge it. Making one from scratch would have been way too hard …

Really? Why?

I don’t think it’s made with just alchemy. There’s something in there I don’t really understand …

Sophie, can I ask you something?

Huh? You think you can fix it?

Maybe … No, definitely. In fact, I’m certain of it. I promise I can do it!

Hehe… All right. It’s all yours.

Really …? I mean, thank you! Um … Would you mind watching? Just in case I do something wrong?

Sure thing! I won’t take my eyes off you for a second!

I-I wasn’t asking you to stare! Just make sure I don’t mess up, okay?

(Although I guess that hasn’t changed much … )

And with that, we can now synthesize with Plachta and have unlocked her recipes!

A trip to the waterfall later …

Maybe. I feel like I’m close to an epiphany, but my brain is running out of fuel … I think we still have some soil potatoes left. Maybe I should cook one up …

You sure love soil potatoes, huh?

Really? You’re sure?

As sure as sure can be! Just show me that cauldron!

And here is the curveball Sophie 2 throws us! Unlike with Lydie and Sue, who could synthesize the same things and shared their alchemy level the whole game, Plachta has her own recipes that only she can synthesize and she starts off at Alchemy Lv 25. There are gathering items and story items that only Plachta can make (and the game will expect her alchemy level to be much higher than 50 by endgame), as well as weapons–in addition to her own robot arms, Plachta makes Alette’s boots and Olias’ rifles too. Not leveling up Plachta means you can’t progress the story and will be locked out of higher-end weapons for half your party, so it’s important to remember to have her synthesize.

Luckily, she has yet to synthesize the (shared) recipes that Sophie already did, so she’ll get EXP fast by doing all those building block ones for the first time. But first, with the Hydrite, we can’t actually make it yet because we don’t have a Seafood item! We can get some by buying some flour, making some bait, and then synthesizing a Fishing Rod.

Maxing out yellow lets me fish at Rank 2 out the gate.

While I’m out here, might as well demo Major Gathering.

I pick an item (in this case, it’ll be Wing Plant)...

And play a mini-game! The mini-game is different for each different gathering tool. I also suck at all of them so you won’t see much of them out of me.

And with a great big THWACK, I get Wing Plants. Now, time to synthesize!

Party!

I was SO CLOSE with the green threshold, but fell short. Still, 17 uses is plenty.

Nice work! I knew you could do it!

This shouldn’t have taken me so long. I still have a lot to learn.

C’mon, don’t be so hard on yourself. You gotta take your wins where you can. ‘Sides, they both look perfect to me. You two did a hell of a job.

Hear that? We did great!

I suppose … that does make me feel a little better.

I’m no alchemist, though. Just ‘cause they look fine to me doesn’t mean they’ll work.

Then let’s try them out. The quicker we can get them working, the quicker we can find Ramizel!

I agree. The three of us should set off as soon as–

Ehh?! You mean you’re coming with us?

I do owe you one after you got my tools workin’ again. Sides, you said this Plachta girl you’re lookin’ for’s family to you. I’m not gonna stand by and watch a family get separated. Lemme lend a hand.

With pleasure! Thank you, Olias!

And just like that, he's back!

There, all done!

Alchemy’s so weird. What you get out is totally different from what you put in …

Ahaha, it’s not all like that. When I first started, I could only make really basic items, like bags full of Uni …

Erm … Wouldn’t that’ve been faster to do by hand?

Ahaha … ha … Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that alchemy has some simple recipes, too.

Uh-huh … Then do you think there’s anything I can do to help?

Hm? You’d want to, Alette?

You bet! You’re always making stuff for me, which feels kinda unfair. I figure I should pitch in somehow, you know?

I think that’s a wonderful idea. An amateur’s perspective might give you the inspiration you need to spark new discoveries.

Good point! Would you mind, Alette?

Consider it done!

And if nothing else, we’ll have an extra pair of hands to help with tidying up.

Plachtaaaa, that’s so meeeean …

Ahaha …

Can show off later, but this tutorial screen gets the gist well enough. If you get enough links of a particular element, a party member will cut in and give you goodies. Here, Alette is giving a quality boost for Wind links. Other goodies can include changing a component or a square’s color.

Elements are tied to particular party members. Alette aside, Olias helps in for Ice links, while Plachta (or Sophie, depending on who’s synthesizing) helps for Light. The members associated with fire and lightning haven’t joined yet, so no Assist Skills for those elements until then.

Returning to Near-Forest, I’ll forage a bit…

Weathering With Sophie

Got it!

Heh heh heh! Prepare to be amazed!

Is clearing away a few clouds really so impressive?

Whoa! Look how quickly the sun came out!

This stone seems to affect more than the weather. It’s like it has altered the entire environment. Curious … Mightily curious indeed!

See, what did I tell you? It makes the whole world go shwoom!

The hell kinda explanation was that?

Yeah, it went all shwoom and bwaam! It was amazing!

Well, it makes sense to one of us, apparently. Anyway, the road is clear now. We should hurry and find Ramizel.

In addition to radically altering the maps, changing the weather also changes the gathering spots, as well as what items you get from gathering spots; case in point with the sickle. Still, it hasn’t actually brought Ramizel in view…

So too do the enemies change; the mushrooms have been replaced with flowers.

The next tier of weapons is also becoming available! Right now, the conditions are fairly simple (Plachta does a Twin Action, Sophie does a Dual Guard, Alette uses her skills), but you’ll need to know the battle system well to unlock the endgame tier weapons.

What is this thing?

It’s like a tear in the air itself. It might lead somewhere … but I wouldn’t recommend using it.

You mean we can go in?

We could, but no one can say where we might come out. Jumping in blindly would be very dangerous.

Huh. What are the chances that that’s where Ramizel went?

Hmm … Considering the fact that we couldn’t find her anywhere else, chances could be pretty high …

Sounds to me like you really wanna go exploring, Alette.

Well, maybe … but who wouldn’t? Think about it! It could take us anywhere! What if it’s a secret vault full of Elvira’s hidden treasure? Just think of all that Cole!

H-hey, don’t get me wrong! Ramizel totally COULD be in there! I mean … Oh, forget it! I’m going in! Geronimoooo!

Alette, come back! It’s too dangerous by yourself!

I swear, those two just don’t have any self-preservation instincts.

They got a point, though. Combin’ through this forest ain’t gettin’ us any closer to finding Ramizel. Plus I ain’t gonna let them run off alone. We can duck right back out if things look dicey.

I suppose you’re right. Besides, I can’t deny that I’m a little curious myself …

So they enter the hole in the world and find…

It’s incredible. Who would have thought there was a place like this in the middle of the forest?

Not me, that’s for drat sure. Maybe that hidden vault idea ain’t far off the mark.

I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. I see light up ahead. This place must act like a passageway leading from the forest.

I wonder where it goes … Let’s keep going!

Music: Chained Dreams

Well, let’s! It’s not like there’s anything else to do here.

Music: Water Reflected in the Sky

Wow! Look at it all! This is amazing!

Are those … ruins? I’ve never seen anything like this.

What do you reckon this place is?

I’m not sure, but I bet there’s more to it than meets the eye.

I’d bet on it. You wouldn’t exactly cram it in some pocket dimension for no reason.

Sophie, I think we should keep going.

Didn’t you say it was dangerous to go in blindly?

I did, but that was before I knew what we’d find. Just the sight of this place would make any true alchemist mightily curious indeed! If Ramizel got here before us, I’m positive she’d have headed deeper in to investigate!

Now it sounds like YOU just want to go exploring …

Actually, I think she’s onto something.

Ramizel’s the only one brave enough to be poking around somewhere like this.

Really? My grandmother never seemed like the adventurous type …

Probably because Sophie only ever knew her as a, well, grandma, you know?

Even so, we have a duty to investigate every possibility. Come along now, you three!

Heehee. Plachta sure was headstrong when she was young!

What’s that I spy in the background?

So it seems. We may have to change the weather again if we want to proceed.

The last one made the river rise and fall, right? Maybe you can do the same with the water in here.

Good idea. Let’s give it a try!

Having different alchemists with different crafting lists is a neat mix up on the formula. It's a more direct approach than how Shallie went about it, at least from what I remember. I'm wondering if Ramizel's going to be included in this somehow too.

Aside from that, I see we're already not taking long to go from one fantasy vista to the next. I like how this water ruins looks already!

It is definitely different from Shallie. While Lotte could synthesize certain items that only Stera could use and vice versa, there was at least one item that only Lotte could synthesize for plot reasons and that you can't access at all if you picked Stera as your protagonist, and vice versa.

And yeah, not only is each new fantasy vista (or dimension) more fantastical than the last, but they really started off strong with the Flower Bank Ruins, both with the music and the scenery.

Part 4: Dreams of the Sea and Sky

Every dungeon in the game will demand you change the weather and radically alter the zones in doing so to progress. And making it rain or sunny is just the least of it.

Anyway, the seabed (?) is pretty large. So large I’m probably going to have trouble finding my destination…

Still, even with the water level reduced by a hundred feet or whatever, it’s very pretty. And it makes a hell of a combination with the violin and Haruka Shimotsuki’s chorus in the background.

Anyway, we’re close to the end of the first zone…

And beating up some birds for their feathers unlocks the second tier of cloths. Turning the weather sunny also let me find Kupfer Ore, which lets me make Silvalia, the second tier of ingots.

If I fast travel back to this stone, it’ll be sunny; if I enter the ruins via Near-Forest, it’ll be rainy. From now on, different fast travel points in zones will have different default weather. As an aside, these stones often denote that you’re close to the exit…

As such! I just have to change the weather and not even go that far before…

I’m already most of the way through!

Aura

You look like you’re having fun.

Who wouldn’t be? If only I’d thought to pack all my research tools …

A scholar to the bone, huh?

Looking for treasure! I smell a fortune nearby, just waiting to be claimed!

Not a chance! Go find your own loot!

Now, now. Just calm down, you tw–

What was that?

It’s a monster!

Plachta, get back!

Uh-oh. This one looks pretty tough …

Looks like playtime’s over. Get ready to fight!

Oh boy, auras!

Every boss and a good deal of generic monsters will put up an aura that will utterly throttle your damage output so long as it’s up. This gives them more time to charge up super-attacks and lay the hurt on you, so you really want to do your damndest to break through ASAP.
For this one, it’s relatively light; a Wind Aura with 5 durability and which I can smash through immediately with a Lightning Bomb. And reaction skills are pretty nasty, so in this case, it rules out using any other bomb as well as some of Sophie, Plachta, and Olias’ skills. (Yes, despite his gun’s appearance, it mostly does magic damage.)

Debuffs and negative status effects deplete enemy aura faster. In addition to the -3 from the Wind Aura’s electric weakness, the Lightning Bomb shaved off another 2 via paralysis.

You get bonus TP when you break aura…

…And the attacker who broke the enemy aura gets another action. Breaking aura also stuns the enemy, which means they miss their turns and take way more extra damage from attacks, so that’s your cue to let loose!

I know I made that mini-boss seem like a cakewalk, but it can actually be really nasty if it’s your first time dealing with enemies who can put up auras.

Of … Of course … I’m … perfectly …

You look like you’re on your last legs, How about we sit down and take a break?

Sure. You three rest up. I’ll keep watch.

The game even expects that you had a hard time here!

Music: Even if the stars disappear after dawn

Excuse me, but … Do you mind if I ask you something?

What about?

Would you tell me who taught you alchemy?

My mentor! She’s super strict, but she really knows her stuff.

I see. And who is this mentor?

Ehehe … Well, you see … It’s Plachta.

The same Plachta you’re searching for?

Yep. She’s like family to me, but she’s also my alchemy mentor. Thanks to her, I’ve gotten way better than I ever could have dreamed. She says I still have a long way to go, though. So I have to study even harder.

Am I really going to be such a powerful alchemist someday? No, I mustn’t get ahead of myself. There’s no proof we’re even the same person. Only, if it really is true … I suppose it gives me something to look forward to.

Time to get going. You three feeling better?

Yes, we had a pleasant rest.

Olias said “you three”, but there’s just the two…

Huh? Where did Alette go?

Eek! What’s happened now?

I knew I was right! My nose for treasure never lies!

What are you blabbering about? And where did you get to?

Heh heh heh! Never you mind! Just feast your eyes … on this!

Not just ancient–super valuable! Do you have any idea how much these sell for? A collector would pay a fortune for one in this condition!

A small fortune, maybe. I reckon you’d be lucky to get a thousand for it.

That’s where you’re wrong, buster! This single coin is worth over a million Cole!

A million?! For one coin?!

You serious? For a grubby old piece of metal?

That can’t be right. I can hardly even tell it’s a coin at all.

I’m not lying! Do you know how rare it is to find a coin from ancient times? See, there are only three known to exist in the whole world, and …

Yeah, yeah, I believe you. Just take care you don’t drop it. Anyway, time to move on, Keep your eyes peeled for any more monsters.

At this point, I’ve unlocked the second-tier weapons for everyone, so I might as well go back to the atelier and craft a bit.

Music: Premonitions

Back in the forest…

:smith: It was a dragon that did it, I tell ya.

Did you say … dragon?

:smith: Oh, aye. Came swoopin’ down from outta nowhere. Caused this whole mess in the blink of an eye.

drat, he’s comin’ this close to town now …? Was anyone hurt?

:smith: It’s gonna take a while to get all this sorted. Sorry, but y’all can’t go this way until we’re done.

Well, that’s how the game blocks that part of Near-Forest for now. Going back to town…

Business

I see … So there is no need to go out of my way to break down the ingredients in the cauldron.

Yeah. You risk compromising the quality of the ingredients if you do that.

This method takes more time, but it gets the job done without damaging any of the ingredients.

You’re welcome … But I do kinda feel like your alchemy’s a bit unique.

Perhaps the book that first introduced me to alchemy was not all that well written.

A book?

I learned all the foundations of alchemy from a very old tome.

Huh, what are the odds that this was the very book she would become 500 years before Sophie 1.

Whaaat?! S-so you mean you’re self-taught?

There were no alchemists in my village, after all. All I could do was experiment over and over again with that tome as my guide.

Wow. And you still managed to work out how to do all this.

Yes … Well, I had no choice.

(Unlike Plachta, I had alchemy books AND my grandma’s recipes … )
(This kind of smarts … I’ve got to work harder!)

This … is a regular piece of ore, right? Or am I missing something?

I’ll say! Go on, take a closer look! I bet you’ve never seen ore shaped like this before! It’s all natural, too! Doesn’t that make it like, super rare?!

Wait, you mean someone didn’t carve this?! Wow, that really is something …

I know, right?! And, guess what?

1,000 Cole?! It’s still just a rock, you know?

Sure, but one whose fabulousness you’ve just acknowledged. I mean, check out that form! Besides, it’s unusual, which makes it extraordinary, which means it’s priced accordingly. Seriously, 1,000 Cole’s a steal for a super rare item like this! So, how about it?

Hmm … It’s neat, but I think I’ll pass. When it comes to alchemy, the shape doesn’t matter much.

Really?! Aw, man … I only bothered picking it up because I was so sure you’d buy it … Oh well, I’ll just sell it to some other person. I’ve already got a few people in mind.

I wonder who on earth would pay that much for a chunk of mineral …

Oh, it’s Olias … Is he working?

Yo, if it ain’t Sophie. What’s up?

Not much. I was just passing by. Are you working now?

Yup! I’m the star bodyguard of this world. I’ve got so many requests I’m drownin’ in ‘em!

Are there really that many requests?

Reckon there’s a finer bodyguard than me in all the land? Not a chance! And there’s your answer!

:manning: Hah … Now if only you could fix that personality of yours …

:manning: Hm. Sure, sure … Anyway, I’m counting on you today, Olias.

Relax. So long as you’ve got me with you, you’re as safe as safe can be. A’ight, Sophie, I gotta go. See ya ‘round!

… Just where does Olias get all his confidence from? But, his client seemed like a regular. I guess Olias really is as popular as he says …

Haha, nope! We aren’t related at all! We wound up living together ‘cause we get along like only two merchants can!

Oh, you two weren’t together from the beginning?

Mhm. When Alette first came to this world, she had nothing but her pigtailed self. Ergo, she didn’t have a single thing she could sell to anyone, and an empty purse to boot.

Oh gosh … That sounds like her worst nightmare.

You can say that again! She was at her wits’ end trying to scrape together some Cole. She even skipped sleeping and cut down on eating to earn more. All work and no play, I tell you! I saw that she was heading down a dark path, so I invited her to become my roommate. That way I could at least make sure she was eating three square meals a day.

Hm … That does sound like something Alette would do …

Ahaha! But that’s what makes her so fun to watch! And you just can’t help but want to help her out!

Hehe … You’re a nice person, aren’t you, Pirka?

I’m just a mama merchant watching over a baby merchant! It’s also great since she brings me rare items as souvenirs from her delivery jobs. So she’s helping me too! I scratch her back, and she scratches mine.

A Trip to the Tavern

… Kati, you’re not slacking off again, are you?

Hmm? Oh, Sophie! Nope, I’m just a little worn out from all the hustling I did today …

Kati seemed so much more capable when I first met her …

She takes requests from Miss Elvira rather seriously. Anything else, however … It pains me to say it, but the people of the town often speak of her in less than stellar terms.

Heeey, that’s not faaaair. I wasn’t always like this. I only ended up this way because I kept my nose to the grindstone so long I burned out. If anything, I’m what happens when you work TOO hard.

… In short, this is her default mode. So if you’d like to place an order, please do so through me.

Come to think of it, there are people in Erde Wiege who’ve come from the future, right? So why doesn’t Roytale seem all that different from the time I came from?

Huh, good point. I’d never thought about that.

You ought to pay more attention … There is indeed a reason for it.

However, she cannot bring people here from just any time in the past or future. If we use Sophie’s time as a base, there were people here from up to a thousand years earlier. However, there were no people here from more than about one hundred years later.

I see … That reminds me, back home, when I asked Plachta what the town was like 500 years ago, she said it didn’t change much.

No changes in five hundred years, huh? You’d think somethin’ would’ve improved in all that time.

Well, there’s been no need. No one is particularly troubled by anything. That in and of itself is quite a feat, wouldn’t you say?

Hmph … I guess. But I’d rather see some things change.

I bet it’d probably take a few thousand years to get to that point.

No Hagels or other smithy middlemen here in Erde Wiege–Sophie and Plachta make all the weapons and armor themselves. As you can see, Gear Synth effects stack, and two of the Silvalia I crafted earlier will add another 12 ATK and 20 SPD to the weapon’s base specs.

Same with the Gnade Ring, which needs an Ingot…

…And with flat stat boosts (Power Rune gives +15 ATK, Speed Rune gives +15 SPD), it’s the best all-purpose accessory available for a very long time. Still, with just a 5x5 grid, I have to make some pretty hard compromises on what effect thresholds I want to hit and leave a lot of components on the table. And doing all this synthesis means Plachta’s alchemy level is going up quite quickly!

Peep those stat boosts! And I’ve even given Olias and Alette Lightning Bombs too…? Let’s go back and wrap up the dungeon.

Plachta’s Voice

That doesn’t make sense. We didn’t meet her on the forest road, so she must have come this way … Could we have passed each other without realizing?

Guess it’s possible.

In that case, maybe it’s time we headed back to Royta–

Sophie … Sophie …

Huh?

Plachta …? Plachta, is that you?!

What are you on about? Of course it’s me.

No, I mean the other Plachta! I just heard her voice!

I feel … warmth … Is someone there? … Sophie, is that you?

Plachta! Plachta, come back!

Hey, wait up! I dunno what you think you heard, but you’ll get yourself killed!

Sophie? What’s going on?!

I have no idea, but we can’t let her run off on her own. After her!

Plachta! Where are you? Can you hear me?!

Just calm down for a moment. Are you absolutely certain it was her?

Yes! It’s got to be Plachta, I’d recognize her voice anywhere!

Easy there. No one’s callin’ you a liar. What was she saying?

She was calling my name, over and over … But it seemed like she couldn’t tell I was here …

Whoa! G-guys? There’s something in the water!

Eek!

Is that … a monster? It’s enormous!

drat! That’s one big fish!

… I can’t stop … Not until I find Plachta.

Music: Destructive Disruption

drat it! This ain’t lookin’ good!

We should run, Sophie! Live to fight another day!

We can’t! We still haven’t found Plachta!

This rain is tipping the scales in the water dragon’s favor! If only we could dispel it …!

The Sunlight Heliodor! It’s … glowing?!

… Maybe we can do this after all.

Are you quite certain?!

I don’t know … but I feel like something is telling me not to give up.

Something? What sort of “something”?

I’ll take anythin’ right now! Just do it!

Well, changing the weather did what it said it would …

…But now it’s put up a Wind Aura with 20 durability.

That’s four Lightning Bomb uses…

…and another AoE to tank…

Before its aura goes down and I just have everyone chuck Lightning Bombs at it until it goes away. Especially Olias and Alette, whose regular ice and wind skills are useless here.

Phew … Did we … Did we beat it?

Doesn’t look like it’s gettin’ back up anytime soon. Anyone hurt?

I’m fine. How about you, Sophie?

Yes … I’m … right as rain … More importantly … I can’t hear Plachta’s voice anymore. It was so clear before, but now …

For real? We beat you fair and square!

Sophie! Run!

Music: Anywhere, Anytime

Hey, it’s–

Take this!

Time to finish this!

And with Ramizel and her friend’s intervention, the water dragon goes away for a good long while.

That was close. You almost ended up in that thing’s belly.

Music: Whichever Way

Ramizel! And Diebold!

Eh? … Ramizel?

What’re you two doin’ here?

Kati told us about you, so we hurried after you before you got into trouble. You certainly took the scenic route. We must have missed you on your way here.

You’re kidding …

That may be my fault. I insisted we take a detour on our way back to Roytale.

Well, all’s well that ends well. Though it was a close call …

Let’s just be thankful we made it in time. Which reminds me …

That’s right. Um … I’m not quite sure where to start.

This isn’t exactly a comfortable place to talk. Why don’t we continue again once we get back to town?

Um … Do you mind if we stay a minute? I want to look around just a little bit more …

Not a chance. Unless you want to wind up as another monster’s supper.

But …!

She’s right, Sophie. None of us are ready for another battle like that.

Alette …

I know you want to keep looking, but this place ain’t goin’ anywhere. No reason we can’t come back later.

You too, Olias? I guess you’re right …

I know it’s disappointing, but thanks for understanding. Now, we should head back home.

… Thank you, Ramizel … … Or perhaps I should call you grandma?

… Nothing … I’m sure it was her voice I heard … Plachta, where did you go?

Sophie! Hurry up!

It looks like we made it back safe and sound …

Things seemed pretty dicey for a minute, but we’re all still in one piece …

Excuse me … um, miss? Your name is Ramizel, right?

That’s right. Alchemist Ramizel Erlenmeyer, at your service.

Let’s continue this at Kati’s place. I know I could do with a sit down.

So, are you any more confident about Ramizel’s identity?

Hmm … Honestly, I’m not sure.

Yeah, fair point.

We can’t even ask her, can we? It’s not like she would know any better than you …

Even this early on, Sophie probably already knows in her heart of hearts, but being fair to her, how is she even supposed to break this conversation? Flash back to your early twenties–how would you react if this other person barely younger than you asked you if you were their grandparent? It would be awkward as all get out and you’d think they were joshing you or not quite all right up there, right?

Right! Coming!
(I guess I can think about this later. Right now, I need to focus on finding Plachta.)

First I need to save! So back to the atelier to…

Nice going, Plachta!

I have you to thank.

Hey, all I did was give you a quick intro to the method.

(I wonder if this friend is who I’m thinking of … )
You and your friend must have worked really hard together.

Yes … We clashed at times, but we shared the fruits of our research and strove to hone our abilities. He is … very talented. I’m grateful to know someone like him.

He sounds like a good friend.

tl;dr poo poo happened when they were adults and it’s why Plachta turned herself into the book Sophie found at the start of Sophie 1

Now, time to hit the save but-

Is something the matter? Don’t tell me …

Nah, it’s nothin’ bad. I was just thinking it’s high time I shared my secret fighting wisdom.

Wow, really? With you teaching me, I’d be unstoppable!

You bet! You’ll be Roytale’s second-best bodyguard in no time!

… And that’s how it goes!

Um … Doesn’t that mostly amount to saying “figure it out yourself”?

What? No way! Knowin’ the trick is half the battle! You get it, right, Sophie?

Ahaha … ha … I guess you’re not wrong …
(… I do kinda feel I did the same thing before back in Kirchen Bell, though.)

Well, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to try it out.

And this is how you upgrade your party members’ skills in battle (and Sophie’s gathering ranks for bare-handed gathering and gathering by staff), by spending AP on gameplay benefits like reducing the amount of money you owe Pirka, increasing the quality of materials gathered, or just giving members flat bonuses to their stats. You get AP by leveling up or by completing sidequests for characters (e.g., spending money at Alette's shop to get her SP).

Anyway, save button hit at long last. We’ll circle back with Ramizel and then some next update.

i used the gathering minigames

If you synthesize stuff right and are patient enough to deal with the lag and RNG, you can get away with ridiculous stuff like a sickle that can gather Rank 2 materials before the first boss. The gathering minigames are useful for putting components you would otherwise never see on ingredients, or for creating ingredients that have components with multiple link squares, which can help a lot with squeezing components together and getting higher effect thresholds.

And abilities-wise I beelined for the stuff related to alchemy, because I knew enough from reading Atelier LPs to know that better items would help way more than inflating my stats a bit.

oh yeah for sure, Major Gathering gets you some good poo poo! I just don't want to show off several dozen of my failures at it; just the first of each mini-game will do.

And most certainly with AP; being able to craft better equipment with better traits gives much larger stat boosts than grinding levels or paying for a flat +5 or even +25 would. And the further you get and the better your bombs and ingots/cloths, the more Pirka charges to restock or duplicate them, so driving those costs down (and being able to bring in more money from requests) is also a priority of mine.

I can entirely believe it.

I'm not sure if it's on my side but there seems to be an audio timing drift that results in significant mismatch in the back half of long videos.

It’s not just you  I can’t do anything about the videos already up, but for the long videos in my Elgato library there’s no mismatch at all, and heck that’s why I didn’t catch it up until now. Listening to the next video, gradual desync issues show up when converting them to mp4 files for upload to YouTube. I’ll address that from now on.

look when Olias is the most in-demand bodyguard in town who's gonna narc on him or Plachta for a not quite legal gun :colbert:

anyway I've finally developed a workflow that resolves the audio desync issues for the footage that, hopefully, will make it into Part 5. However, given how almost all the earlier videos are compromised, I want to go back and rerecord the footage and reupload them since it just looks bad otherwise.

Part 5: The Goddess of Dreams

Ramizel’s Requests

Yeah … Although I’m sure I heard her voice back in the ruins where we met …

Hate to say it, but I didn’t hear a thing.

Yeah…I’m sorry, but I didn’t either.

I’m afraid that makes three of us.

No way … Maybe I just imagined it after all …

Hey, chin up. You’ll not find your Plachta by acting all down in the dumps. Isn’t that why you came looking for me in the first place?

Oh yeah! That’s right! I meant to ask you! Can you please ask Elvira about Plachta? If she’s the goddess of Erde Wiege, she’s bound to know something …

Sure, I’d be happy to help.

R-really?!

Of course. I’m hardly going to ignore someone in need.

Hear that, Sophie? We’ve got some help!

I’ll ask her as soon as I’m able … but unfortunately, there’s something I’ll need you to do for me in exchange.

Of course! I’ll do my best!

I’ve got one to clear out some monsters in the marsh, and one to make new swords for Diebold.

Diebold? The person you were with when we met you?

That’s the one. I hear you’re an alchemist, so I’m sure you’ll do just fine.

Leave it to me! I’ve synthesized a few swords in my time, no problem!

I’m glad to hear it. You can find Diebold in the Residential District. Do a good job for him, will you?

You can count on it! Thank you, Miss Ramizel!

Just Ramizel will do. I’m not one for formalities.

Oh! Right! Then, um, please call me Sophie!

All right then. I’ll be back soon, Sophie.

Well, that went nicely. Now, which request will you attend to first?

I think I’ll start with making the swords for Diebold. Ramizel mentioned he was in the Residential District, so I should go and talk to him.

“But first I’ll get some jobs” I thought, but the game had other ideas…

Oh, Sophie. You here for something to eat? Hang on, I’ll go get Gnome.

Um! No thanks, that’s fine! I’m sure he’s got enough on his plate. Besides, I’d like to try your cooking, Kati!

Nope, sorry. No can do. Not right now, at least.

So … IS there actually a time when you can?

Hmmm … When I feel like it, I guess? I couldn’t serve you something I didn’t put my heart into. If you really want the best, then today’s no good. That’s just how it is, all right?

*Sigh* … Something tells me she’s always going to have an excuse …

Music: Hidden Pride

Um, excuse me! Hi!

That’s right! Sophie Neuenmuller. I’m here about your request for some new swords. I have taken it over from Ramizel.

Did you? I see … I presume she had some urgent business to attend to.

… Hey, looks like you’ve already got swords by the bucketload! What gives?

I would prefer a weapon I’m more familiar with for everyday purposes.

Then stop hoarding ones you don’t use, swords-for-brains …

Please, I’m hardly a hoarder. It’s a simple pastime.

You two certainly seem to get along well.

Didn’t I mention? These two are bodyguard buddies.

Leaving that aside … Sophie? Might I inquire as to your smithing expertise?

I’ve made a couple of swords in my time. Not many, though, I admit.

I see … That does not entirely allay my misgivings, but if Ramizel thinks you capable, I will trust her judgment.

Come to think of it, Ramizel’s never actually seen Sophie doing alchemy, has she?

Huh, guess not … Well, she must have some idea …

I should introduce myself properly. I am Diebold Lewerenz, I work as a guard in this town.

These are the swords I was hoping you could replace …

I have done all I can to keep them in working order, but time exacts its toll. Sadly, I fear our battle at the ruins was their last. They will no longer serve as a weapon.

to the point where he was down to one of his two swords there, but hey, that’s what Sophie’s here for!

I see … I’m sorry to hear that. But don’t you worry! I’ll make you some new swords you’ll be just as happy with!

Excellent … I shall be waiting with great anticipation.

Alright … I’m gonna check in to see if I’ve got any new requests myself. Give me a shout if you head out gatherin’!

I’ve got some business to take care of too. See you around!

Sure! See you later! (Now to make the swords … I can’t mess this up, so I’ll have to think carefully about the recipe.)

I was born ready! Now, what to make?

You should come up with an idea of what you want first, like a medicine or a tool.

Hrmm alright … How about a tool? That would be easier to duplicate too!

You think so? Okay, let’s get started!

Wait, cute?!

Oh yeah, I just love this kinda avant-garde stuff! So, what the barrel is it?

Umm … Actually, I think this is a failure.

Ooh, right, right. Maybe I was being a bit optimistic about my alchemical talent.

It might also be a little too … unique to sell.

Now hold up, missy! Of course it’ll sell! If anything, it’ll sell TOO well! Just look at this design! It’s impossible to pull your eyes away from its majesty!

Uhh … You think so?

If a merchant says so, you know it’s gotta be true! Now I see what I’ve gotta do! I just need to double down on my duplication power and artistic genius!

That’s, um, not the conclusion I would have come to … Still, it looks like you had a lot of fun, and that’s all that matters!

Now for the actual request! Ingots are trivially easy to synthesize, and for the Diamond Rabbit…

Music: Sailing on Sunlight

I thought I knew a bit about swords, but these are nothing like the ones Sir Julio used …
yeah, Julio had a pretty big two-hander

Is Julio another one of your friends?

You were friends with a knight …? That’s quite a social circle you must have had.

Haha, I guess you might be right. I met all sorts of people back in Kirchen Bell … There was also a swordsman called Fritz. He taught me how to make dolls.

How to make dolls … From a swordsman? Well, he certainly sounds eccentric.

Maybe … but without him and the others, I wouldn’t be half the alchemist I am today.

I’ll have to bear that in mind.

Hehe … Right, I should check if I have all the materials I need for Diebold’s swords.

Most certainly, and the game doesn’t care how well this one comes out, so neither do I!

I’ve made sure they’re strong and sharp. The rest I can figure out after we test them. I should bring them to Diebold as soon as I can.

… Olias? Hmm. It looks like something is bothering him … Hey Olias, is everything okay?

Oh, hey, Sophie … I’m just, y’know, thinkin’ about some trouble I’m havin’ …

I don’t know if I can help much but … you can talk to me about it, if you’d like.

… Heh. It’s nothin’ special. As you already know, I’m a bodyguard. More than that, I’m the most reliable, strongest super bodyguard in this whole world.

Th-the strongest super bodyguard? … Well, yeah. You’re definitely a reliable guy.

Right. And ‘cause of that, I’ve got requests comin’ out o’ my ears … even though there are plenty of other folk who could handle ‘em. One of the other guards was just askin’ me if I’d help him out by passin’ some jobs his way.

O-oh, I see …

… I guess I’m just too amazing. So amazing that there ain’t any jobs left for anyone else. Thinkin’ about it … kinda gets me down.

That doesn’t mean I can slack off, though. After all, my clients are comin’ to me for help.

That’s a duty too heavy for just one man. Can my muscular self really bear it without gettin’ crushed? Whadd’ya think, Sophie … Huh?

Dammit, she ran off on me! I wasn’t finished talkin’, y’know!!

Oh! Such blades!

What do you think? Just tell me if there’s anything you want changed.

Not at all. They’re durable, yet well-balanced, and they sit in my hand as though they were made for it. There is much they might teach me about smithing. I am honored to be given such fine work.

Ehehe … It was nothing. By the way, do you do your own smithing?

I dabble. Any guard must know how to keep their weapons keen.

Your … foe?

A fearsome dragon clad in black scales. I have sworn to defeat it. If you should happen to see it, please tell me immediately.

Roger that! If I see any black dragons, you’ll be the first to know!

You have my thanks. Incidentally, Sophie, you are searching for a lost member of your family, are you not? I realize that you asked for no repayment, so I would be honored to help you in your search.

A-are you sure? I’d love to have you with us!

Good … I will endeavor not to disappoint you.

Um, I know it’s sudden, but Ramizel wants us to exterminate some monsters. Could you join us?

Of course. If nothing else, I will relish the opportunity to test my new blades.

Thank you so much! I plan on heading to the marsh right now!

The Habitants of Roytale

There are kids and elderly people here too, right?

Anyone who catches Elvira’s eye is welcome here, regardless of their age.

But no one here is related, are they?

Nope! We’re all complete strangers from different places and times. We’re all in this together, so we all help each other out. When a kid shows up, someone usually steps in to take care of them right off the bat. Same goes with older folks, too. People make sure they can focus on their dreams without much fuss.

While everyone’s dreams may differ, we all share the same desire to make them a reality. And that means we all also want to support and strengthen those around us.

Mhm. I don’t think anyone who’d put their goals before someone’s well-being would be welcomed here. I just can’t see Elvira be attracted to that kind of person, you know?

Haha, I guess not …

Do most failed attempts blow up in your face like that, though? Yeesh, this place is a disaster …

Ahaha … Yeeeah, Plachta’s not going to be happy about this …

You’d better get the atelier aired out before you get bust–

Whoa, Sophie? What’s that?! There, at the bottom of the cauldron! How is that not a success?

It’s got a solid form, sure, but it’s not what I was trying to make. Throwing this kind of thing away is always such a hassle…

Seriously?! That’s such a huge waste! Don’t just toss it, give it to me instead!

I don’t mind, but … You know it’s not good for anything but sitting on a shelf, right?

Maybe it looks that way to you, but to my eyes … it’s a business opportunity!

Huh, didn’t expect that … Would that mean if I happened to have a few other mistakes lying around, you’d be interested in those, too?

There’s more?!

Oh, sure. Getting rid of them is a pain, so I usually just shove them somewhere out of sight.

I’ll take the lot! Please, give me every last one of them!

Go right ahead! I’m starting to run out of places to put them, so that’ll really help.

Sophie … If I catch you trying to sweep your failures under the rug again, so help me…

What is it?

Rather, where is it? You’re not holding anything.

Hey, have a little faith! C’mon, it’s outside.

dude moves pretty fast if he could get that installed without Sophie or Plachta noticing

A greenhouse?

Right. So, you know how the weather in Erde Wiege never changes? This is like a mini version that keeps the climate perfect for crops.

… Except neither one of us has any interest in growing vegetables, do we?

Look, just think outside the box for a second. Sure, I’d probably just grow regular veggies, but you guys work with some special stuff, right?

I see. A curious proposal. Mightily curious indeed!

Oh yeah, and take this too. Figured it might help you make those seeds.

Thanks, Olias!

The greenhouse is my ticket to get gamebreaking traits way earlier than I should, but I need to tee that up for a later update. If we’re going to the swamp…

I want a Rank 2 pickaxe and a new pair of shoes!

Second Request

Huh? What’s Diebold doing here?

I am accompanying Sophie as thanks for the fine blades she made me.

Glad to have you on the team. With you ‘round, I reckon we can take on anythin’!

I am honored to be here. Let us both do our utmost to protect Sophie.

Hehe! I’m counting on you all!

If everyone is here, shall we go? We are bound for a place called Azura’s Pier.

To get there, we have to get through the Near-Forest, where there was some wreckage last update blocking the path forward.

Look, the road is clear! They must have finished clearing the wreckage.

Yay, we can get through at last! But I wonder what happened?

I think I recall hearing something about a dragon attack …

Zmei …

I know what you’re thinkin’, but now ain’t the time. We got a job to do.

My apologies. We should rejoin the others.

Making it rain lets us proceed to…

Music: Sinking into Hyphae

A swamp! We’re getting close!

Good thing Sophie can’t slip and fall off the cliff!

A Skittish Monster

We’re here!

It is said the beasts appear on Azura’s Pier, but they are yet to show their horrid faces …

Hah! I bet they smelled two pro bodyguards comin’ and ran a mile!

… Well, that settles it. Those two are out of the party.

Whoa, hold up! Let’s not be too hasty …

There …! Sophie, look!

That’s it! That’s the one! All right, let’s do this!

Eh …? It ran away …

That monster … it seems to be an extremely skittish breed. Considering how far it ran away, I doubt we could catch up to it now if we tried.

How cowardly … Sophie, I suspect alchemy may hold the answer! Let us search for a way to defeat them before they can escape!

Good thinking, Plachta! Let’s head back to the atelier and see what we can cook up!

I’m not sure that’ll work. If it would have, I’m sure Olias would have shot it to bits already.

You have a point … Diebold did mention that it was too far away. If only there were some way of luring it into range …

Hrmm … Something that could lure a monster in … Something to draw it closer …

Something like … bait? … Surely that’s too simple to work.

Then again, the simplest solutions are often the most effective. It’s at least worth a try.

Plachta is outpacing the game’s expectations for her alchemy level. After making fishing bait, I go back to the swamp…

…and can get the Devil’s Kiss with my Rank 2 sickle.

Monster Bait

Even I am unsure whether it deserves to see the light of day, although I designed it myself …

One way or another, it’s sure going to be interesting …

Yes … Considering I am responsible for this concoction, maybe I should be the one to synthesize it.

Sure thing. It’s all yours!

Urgh … What’s with this smell …? What have you been making?

Monster Bait. The smell is a necessary evil, I’m afraid.

We need it to attract monsters from far away, so it has to be pretty strong.

It smells like raw meat, hay, and stagnant water. Rather appealing, perhaps, to a monster.

True. They sure ain’t known for their flowery aroma.

If we stand around talking any longer, I’ll never get the smell out of the furnishings. Let’s try it out, and quickly.

Wandering Pariah

There’s our monster! It really worked!

I sense none of its former skittishness. It seems unaware that we are even here.

It almost makes me thankful we made the bait as strong as we did.

Agreed. Right, let’s take it down while it’s distracted!

drat should have brought more Bombs

Still, Curse gives it a magic weakness, meaning it’s weak to all my bombs. Once its aura is down…

…my damage output is pretty high, meaning it goes down fairly easily.

Yahoo! Finally, job done!

Phew … I’m just glad it actually went for the bait.

You can say that again …

What?

Alette, you’ve got some on your leg …!

How troublesome … At this rate, every monster in the neighborhood will gather around her.

Eek! Sophie, help! I don’t want to be a monster magnet!

Take a deep breath and relax! We’ll find some water to wash it off, all right?

Y-yeah, right! C’mon, let’s go!

Thankfully, it seems like it’s all washed out.

Perhaps this is my fault. If I had not made it so strong …

Don’t worry about it. Without it, that monster would still be giving us the runaround.

Yeah, what she said. It ain’t your fault, it’s hers.

Hey!

Calm down. Anyway, I think it’s time we headed back to Roytale.

Indeed. I cannot imagine Ramizel will be much longer.

“Ellie”, huh? Maybe Ramizel is more to Elvira than a mediator between her and everyone else.

Come on, get out here! I know you know what’s going on! *Sigh* …

Chucking bombs gives me the AP to buy hand-gathering rank 2!

Silence

Who’s to say that’s where Elvira is? After all, only Ramizel knows for sure … On that note, have you given up on telling her that you might be her granddaughter?

No … I still mean to. But she doesn’t even have a husband yet, or children of her own. I don’t know how she’ll take it.

Even so, this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I do not think you should let it slip away…

Morning … Are you two awake?

Have you only just returned …? You took longer than we expected.

Yeah … About that. There’s a bit of a problem.

What kind of problem?

Could you come with me to the tree? It’ll be easier to explain things there. … Plus, I need her to hear us.

Sorry for asking you all the way out here.

I don’t mind … I just wonder why we couldn’t talk back at the atelier.

So the rumors are true … Elvira really does reside close to the Dream Tree?

She does. Well, she really lives in her own dimension, but the gate to it is right here. Or at least, it should be … But it won’t appear, no matter how much I call.

Wait, does that mean something’s happened to Elvira?

It’s possible … But, I think there may be another explanation.

Really? Like what?

Sophie, could you do something for me?

Eh …?

Wha …? Ramizel, surely you cannot be serious! What you are asking for is far beyond the scope of alchemy.

I’m perfectly serious. I’m well aware I can’t do this on my own. But the times we fall short are precisely the times when we need to turn to others. Alchemy is a process, not a goal. There’s nothing wrong with asking someone more capable for help.

*Sigh* … Come to think of it, your dream was “happiness for everyone,” wasn’t it?

That’s right! It doesn’t matter how we move forward as long as we do it together. So, how about it? Will you help? I’ll lend a hand where I can, of course.

… If it’ll bring me closer to finding Plachta … I’ll do it! I’ll try to think of a way to open the path to Elvira.

Good grief … Trust you to set us an impossible task.

Not feeling helpful, Plachta?

Oh, I’ll help. There’s no telling what you’d do without my supervision.

It’s recipe time! Let’s head back to the atelier!

And with that, the party's all here, all six of them!

If we’re opening a path to a different dimension, we need to know a little more about it. We don’t want to send ourselves somewhere dangerous by mistake.

Are there any doors to Elvira’s home aside from the Dream Tree?

… Now that you mention it, I don’t think so. I’ve never gotten in from anywhere else.

Then it sounds like there’s only one entrance, in one location. Maybe it’s always there, but just hidden? That might make things easier.

Hidden … or perhaps it is closed …? Why does that ring a bell …

Music: Warmth

Plachta, you’re a genius! Let’s see … Assuming they work the same way …

Wow, look at them go … I knew they’d come through.

Those last two ingredients are why it was critical I get hand/staff gathering rank 2…

…because otherwise I can't find said ingredients, unlock this recipe and progress the story.

Dimensional Solvent

You two sure have outdone yourselves. Maybe I should get back into alchemy …

You will “get back into” alchemy? I’m afraid alchemy requires discipline, practice, and a–

Ramizel! It’s finished!

Fantastic. So this will open the way to Ellie’s home?

That’s the idea. It’ll open the hidden door, and that should lead us to Elvira.

At least in theory. We cannot say for certain without testing it.

Well then, let’s try it as soon as we can.

Their Silvalia-tier weapons are very easy to unlock. I just had to find rank 2 staff/hand-gathering materials, and craft a Silvalia with >30 quality (trivial) for Diebold’s new swords and use Ramizel’s main skill three times (also easy with Twin Actions). Now that the newcomers are outfitted, it’s time to go!

The Goddess of Dreams

Hey, this looks just like the gateway to the ruins.

Looks like you were right on the mark, Plachta!

Hehe. All in a day’s work for a professional alchemist.

Yeah, you did great. One gold star for you!

Um … I do not think I like how patronizing that sounded …

So, what now? Is this gate thing gonna take us to Elvira?

That’s right. It should work exactly the same as the one I know.

Bear in mind, however, we still have not discovered why it was closed off in the first place. Before we go, we should make sure we are prepared for whatever we might find.

Got it …
(This door leads to Elvira’s sanctum … And it’s in exactly the same place where the vortex spat us out …)
(If the vortex has something to do with Elvira … Then Plachta could be in real trouble …!)

My …! To think this place was hidden here all this time!

Sophie! Over there!

UHHH

No way … It can’t be …

Ellie!

Plachta!

Wha-?!

R-Rami … What are you doing here? Wait, who are the rest of you? Who let you in here?

That voice … I have heard it before … just before I arrived in Erde Wiege.

Me too. That means … she must be Elvira!

Shut up! Go away! You aren’t supposed to be here!

So this is where you’ve been, Plachta … I’m so glad you’re safe.

… Huh? Plachta? Aren’t you going to say something?

… It appears she cannot hear you.

Yeah … I’ve got a really bad feelin’ about this.

Ellie, I’ve got a lot of questions for you, but they can wait. Right now, you need to let Plachta go, and allow her and Sophie to go back home.

No! I can’t! That would be really bad! Plachta’s going to stay here, okay? So just get out! Right now!

No way! I’m not gonna leave my family behind!

Ellie … Whatever game you’re playing, it’s not funny anymore. Plachta belongs with So–

No! You don’t understand!

… Diplomacy does not seem to be getting us anywhere.

indeed, this interaction has all the energy of NO YOU SHUT THE gently caress UP DAD MOM

… Well, that’s just fine. If she won’t let Plachta go, I’ll take her back myself!

Sophie!

Sophie!

No … I didn’t …

Are you all right? Can you stand?

Y-yeah … I’m fine.

Ellie! What do you think you’re doing?!

Don’t come any closer! You have to leave, right now!

Even aside from her aura that makes using bombs on her a liability…

Elvira summons scrubs that take the hit for her if you aggro her. Still, THEY will die in one or two hits from the appropriate bomb, and that lets me build up TP faster.

AoE bombs CAN still hit her while they’re on the field, but beware the reaction skill!

Ramizel’s high-powered physical skills are especially valuable here…

…and her main skill, Burning Rod, slams stunned enemies even harder, which follows up nicely on aura breaks.

Still, I couldn’t finish her in time, so I had to go through this cycle once more to wrap it up.

Im-impossible … Did I just … lose? But … I’m a goddess …

No! Stop!!

… Plachta? Hey, Plachta, what’s wrong?

Sophie? Is everything all right?

… Plachta … She won’t open her eyes. And she won’t answer when I call her name …

No! Surely she could not be …!

Ellie, you’d better start explaining yourself at once!

I … I …

Wha–?

What the …? H-hey, what gives?

Is she … crying? Isn’t she supposed to be a goddess?

… Good grief, Ellie … You know tears aren’t going to solve anything.

But … But I … I never meant for things to turn out like this…

… What’s going on here? What’s wrong with Plachta?

We can’t help you if you don’t stop bawling. Start by telling us what happened.

*Sniff* Okay… I… *sniff* I didn’t do anything to Plachta… I just wanted to speak with her.

That’s all, I promise! I … *hic* Waaaaah!

… A doll’s body?

Y-yeah … At the moment, Plachta’s body is really just a doll with her soul inside. I’m studying up on my alchemy so I can help her become human again.

However, what is stopping Plachta from waking? Should we be concerned about falling prey to the same fate?

You’re totally fine, I promise! This is just a freak accident! It’s all because Plachta’s body wasn’t human … so her soul was less tightly attached. That’s why, when I brought her here, her soul came loose, and … *sniff* I lost it. I swear I tried to fix it! I did everything I could think of! But … my powers only work on dreams. I can’t find a lost soul …

… So you panicked and tried to cover everything up while you figured out what to do.

Wait, for real? Just like a little kid?

She is a goddess, and she’s probably been around longer than the rest of us put together … but she’s spent all that time on her own. Even after meeting me … she’s never made an effort to talk with anyone else …

So without the opportunity to interact with others, she has mentally remained a child?

Pretty much … But … That’s not an excuse for some of the things you’ve done, Ellie. You tried to hide your mistake … Left Sophie stranded with no explanation … Never even thought to ask for help … I could go on.

… That’s enough, Ramizel. I think she’s learned her lesson.

Eh?! Are you sure, Sophie? If anyone has a right to be angry, it’s you …

I know, and I’m not letting her completely off the hook … but it sounds like she made an honest mistake, and she’s tried her hardest to make it better …

… Yeah.

Does that mean it is still possible to save Plachta?

… Plachta’s soul is still safe. It’s just gotten lost. It’s gotta be somewhere in Erde Wiege. I’m double, triple sure of it! If we could find it and bring it back to her body, it should pop right back in.

Then I’ll look for her.

Music: Chick's Lullaby

… I will help as well. After all, she might be my future self. I can’t exactly ignore her plight.

Besides … I have a lot of questions I need to ask her.

I’m in too! I’ve gotta do something to help!

Yeah. Families belong together, ain’t that right? Count me in!

I promised you my aid, and I keep my word. I will aid you in recovering Plachta’s lost soul.

Everyone …

Erde Wiege has its fair share of monsters. You’ll need all the help you can get.

Oi, oi. You comin’ too, Ramizel? Ain’t you got a town to run?

My paperwork can wait. Nothing is more important than a life, right? That said, I think the best thing we can do right now is go home and rest up.

I agree. We would not know where to begin searching anyway.

Why don’t you five go on ahead? I’ll see if I can get anything more out of Ellie.

Understood. Let’s go, Sophie.

Ah … Right …

The waaaaaah-ing must have resumed before long, because something prompted Sophie to look back:

( … Grandma used to stay beside me just like that whenever I cried … )
( … I should go back to the atelier. The sooner I’m rested, the sooner I can look for Plachta’s soul.)

Music: Good Night

Good morning, Sophie. Finally awake?

Oh, Ramizel. Good morning. You could have woken me up, you know.

I could, but I thought I’d let you rest. You had quite a day yesterday. … Feeling any better?

… After seeing how tearful and apologetic she was, I can’t really be upset with her. Besides, I’m sure Plachta will give me an earful as soon as she wakes up.

… I see.

Now that we are all awake, shall we pay Elvira another visit? We ought to discuss how best to go about finding the other Plachta’s soul.

Agreed. Let’s get going.

… Are you certain you’re feeling up to it?

… Yeah, I’m fine. Let’s go!

Some of the traits that start showing up there are needed for what I have in mind, and I'll need to use their combinations to get the stuff I'm looking for. It's a pay to play deal that demands having high-quality traits to begin with (and will involve a fair bit of RNG to get the exact traits I want), but it's definitely something I wish I'd been aware of earlier the first time I'd played.

Will take some time to show off though, since I've got a fair bit of stuff to rerecord from the first four updates before going further.

The OG Mysterious trilogy’s two artists, NOCO and Yuugen, came back for Sophie 2! Well, I guess Gust really likes working with NOCO, since she stayed on an extra year after L&S to do Nelke, the 20th anniversary game featuring protagonists from Marie all the way through Lydie and Sue. You can tell who drew who from the characters' eyes; NOCO characters have solid-colored eyes while Yuugen characters have glimmery eyes. Like with the OG Mysterious trilogy, this even shows up in the 3D character models.

Also, we’re only five updates in, and literally the entire named cast has been introduced. Like I said in the OP, the game has a very small cast and is relatively short.

Okay, that was a lot of songs, but not a word of creative commentary. If you’ve followed any previous Atelier SSLP by myself or Sylphid, you probably remember our bonus updates logging composer notes for each track. Gust stopped having its composers do that starting with the Ryza games. It’s a shame, but it also means I have much less to transcribe.

For Sophie 2’s soundtrack, Gust’s regular composers Kazuki Yanagawa and Daisuke Achiwa split it down the middle. Tatsuya Yano, who was on the sound team during the OG Mysterious trilogy, only did the opening, Syndetos. ACRYLICSTAB's Ryudai Abe did one track that hasn't appeared yet. And I’ll note when there’s a singer doing the vocals or chorus for a track. I don’t know much about Suzuyu or Yuka Yuka, but it’s good to see longtime friend of Gust Haruka Shimotsuki back after she was on maternity leave during Ryza 2.

Story recaps

All this time, the game’s had chapters right under my nose. It doesn’t make any fanfare about this and there’s no chapter transitions reading CHAPTER 1: WELCOME TO ERDE WIEGE like there was in Shallie, Lydie & Suelle and Lulua, so it’s easy to miss. I’ll post the recaps for each five updates.

Chapter 1
Erde Wiege, the Land of Dreams
Plachta and I were sucked into a mysterious vortex. When I came to, I found myself in Pirka's shop. It seems I was rescued by Pirka and Alette, but … Plachta has vanished! I've got to find her!
Erde Wiege, the land of dreams, and Roytale, its sole town. Apparently that's where I am right now but … this surely can't all be real, can it? Maybe I can find out more if I visit this Dream Tree?
I met a bodyguard named Olias who told me that Plachta owns an atelier here. But that can’t be right, because Plachta can’t do alchemy in her doll body … I should visit that atelier and see for myself.
Is That … Plachta?
In order to prove my alchemy skills to this Plachta, I need to gather materials outside of town … But I can't stop wondering if this Plachta is really unrelated to my Plachta? She seems so familiar … Hmm …
I need to gather Silver Web and Rabbit Fur. Rabbit Fur is collected from monsters, so I'll have to be prepared for a fight. I should also remember to pick up any plants I find around here, along with Silver Web!
I've brought all the necessary materials back to the atelier. Alright, time to make some Cloth!
After inspecting the synthesized Cloth, Plachta acknowledged my skill as an alchemist. It also seems possible that the Plachta here is actually the younger version of the Plachta I know. But I can't be sure until I find my Plachta. I should go to the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion in the Commercial District and speak to a person called Kati.
Helping Out Alette
I spoke with Kati at the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion, and she told me that the quickest way to find my Plachta is to ask Elvira. The problem is, the only person who knows how to contact her is a woman named Ramizel, and she's out of town. While Kati will try to find out where she can be found, I offered to help Alette with a request.
It looks like I've accepted a request! I'd better go and defeat the monster in the Breezy Field and gather some materials!
We defeated the monster and got the requested items. Now we just need to go to Kati’s shop and report back!
Kati told us that Ramizel went to Near-Forest. Now that I’ve got a new map, we can head there right away!

Chapter 2
After Ramizel
I should gather some materials while I'm out looking for Ramizel … Who knows, I might even come up with a new recipe or two!
We walked as far as we could, but our path forward is blocked by a river. I did notice a strange rock nearby, and Alette said she saw Ramizel use it to change the weather … No, to make the world go "shwoom!" … What kind of power could that be? Maybe Kati knows something about it.
I borrowed a pair of weather-changing tools from Olias, but they're currently out of power. It looks like I'll have to use alchemy to charge them. I also realized that Ramizel might be my grandma, but when she was young … Still, for now I'd better go back to the atelier and charge these tools. Ah, but maybe I should drop by Pirka's shop first.
It might prove kind of tricky to charge these weather-changing tools … but coming up with recipes is one of the most important alchemy skills! I'm going to give it my best shot!
I actually figured out how to make a Sunlight Heliodor. After that, we'll also need to charge it … Well, it's no use to worry now, just need to do it!
Changing the Weather
After seeing me craft a Sunlight Heliodor, Plachta asked if she could work on the tool needed to make it rain. If this Plachta really is the past version of the Plachta I know, I guess she's always been intensely competitive.
Plachta came up with the recipe for a tool to make it rain called a Cloudburst Hydrite. She seemed nervous about it earlier, but now it's like she's full of determination … I know she can do this!
Plachta completed the Cloudburst Hydrite, so now we have the tools we need to make it sunny or rainy. We'd better hurry to the Dreamspace Stone in Near-Forest!
Proceed through the forest in search of Ramizel. Once we used the Sunlight Heliodor, not only did the weather change, but the whole forest changed, too! It all went "shwoom", just like Alette said! Now that the river is gone, we can continue on ahead!
The Mysterious Dimension
Deep in the forest, we stumbled across what looked like a tear in the sky. Journeying inside, it was like we were floating through the night sky, with only a single light source up ahead to guide us. Is it an exit? Where could it possibly lead …
Passing through the gateway, we've found ourselves in some sort of ancient ruins. This can't be a normal place for people to visit, but there are signs that someone has passed through. Maybe Ramizel is here.
We found a Dreamspace Stone inside the ruins as well. Maybe we need to change the weather here, too? I've got no idea what's going to happen, but let's give it a try!
A monster appeared to block our path. It looks pretty strong, but we can't afford to lose!
We took a break, and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things with Plachta. I'm feeling more and more sure that this Plachta is the past version of my Plachta. I wish we could chat more, but right now we have to keep looking for Ramizel.
A Reunion? Or First Encounter?
I heard Plachta's voice deep in the ruins, but I couldn't find her. And what's more, we were attacked by a massive dragon! But nothing's going to get between me and finding Plachta!
We were saved at the last second by the very person we were looking for, Ramizel! An alchemist with the same name as my grandmother … But, she's so much younger … I guess we should head back to Roytale for now.

Chapter 3
Ramizel the Alchemist
Ramizel the alchemist, hmm … Even now that we've met in person, I still don't know if she's really my grandma … Well, we'd better just head back to Kati's store for now.
Ramizel went to ask Elvira about Plachta, so I took on Ramizel's work in exchange. I need to go see Diebold in the Residential District.
Special Request 1
Diebold has requested that I craft new swords for him. I've made weapons before, but never swords like these! To be honest, I'm a little nervous. Time to head back to the atelier and come up with a recipe.
I've come up with a recipe for Diebold's swords. Now I just need to check if I have enough materials, and then I can start synthesizing!
Diebold liked the swords I made so much that he offered to help me look for Plachta as thanks. It’s perfect timing, since I could definitely use his help defeating the monsters in the marsh.
We met up with Olias and Alette on our way out of town. Our destination is the marsh known as Azura’s Pier. Let’s go!
Special Request 2
We found the monster we were searching for, but it was so cautious that it fled the second it spotted us. There's no way we can get close to it right now, so we'll need to head back to the atelier and come up with a plan.
Plachta is coming up with a bait to lure even the extra cautious monsters. I wonder what sort of recipe she'll make …?
The completed recipe sounds … impressive. I’m kind of having trouble picturing how this bait will turn out, though … Well, I guess we’ve just gotta make it and see!
We've made some bait with a very distinct smell. Olias and Diebold said it's exactly the kind of smell that monsters can't resist, so that's a good sign … Now we need to head back to Azura's Pier.
The bait is super effective! Alright, let's defeat the monsters before they escape!
And that concludes Ramizel's requests! All we need to do now is wait for her return, so I should head back to the atelier for now.
Dwelling of the Dream Goddess
When Ramizel came back from visiting Elvira, she seemed a little out of sorts. There must be something wrong, because she's asked us to come to the Dream Tree.
Ramizel told us that Elvira is in a different dimension, but the entrance isn't opening. I'll need to go back to the atelier to think of a way to get it to open.
It seems the entrance to Elvira's realm is always in the same place. So, since the location is fixed, there might be a solution! Now I just need to come up with a recipe.
The recipe's finished. If I make this, I should be able to open the entrance to Elvira's dimension! There's no time to waste!
The Dimensional Solvent is ready to go. If I use this in front of the Dream Tree, we should be able to enter Elvira's realm!
Thanks to the Dimensional Solvent, the entrance to Elvira's realm has opened up. We need to go inside right away and ask her about Plachta!
Elvira, the Goddess of Dreams
Plachta was with Elvira, who refused to let her go. And then she attacked us! I don't care if she's a goddess, I'm not going to let her keep Plachta!
Even though I managed to reunite with Plachta, it seems her soul has been separated from her body and is somewhere else in Erde Wiege. I wish I could go and look for it right now, but I really need to rest. I'll go back to the atelier, get some sleep, and then think of a plan …

Bestiary notes

When it comes to witty comments on monsters and items, anyone will pipe up in Sophie 2! Well, mostly Sophie and Plachta pipe up, anyway.

Voice Actor comments

These have always been a thing in Atelier games’ bonus menus, but they’ve only been translated starting from Lulua onward. I’ll hold off on posting those until the end of the LP, since a good deal of them will touch on events and character beats yet to come. Still though, there are some VAs who worked on this game whom I wouldn’t have pegged as being longtime fans of the Atelier series.

Part 6: Dreams and Aspirations

To Catch A Soul

It’s okay. I’m not mad. Let’s just figure out how to get her soul back.

Alright …

How does one even begin searching for a soul? I cannot imagine it would be easily visible …

That’s right. You can’t touch them, either.

Can’t see or touch ‘em, eh? Then how are we meant to track it down?

Um … Well, you can’t see or touch a soul, but sometimes you can hear its voice. The stronger your bond with its owner, the easier it is to hear … I think.

Hmm … A disembodied voice … Why do I feel like I’ve heard about something like that before …

Remember? I heard Plachta’s voice deep in the ruins!

That’s right … Guess you weren’t just hearin’ things after all.

There’s no question it was Plachta’s voice. I’d recognize it anywhere.

… What do you think, Ellie? Could Plachta’s soul be there?

Those ruins are in a dimension that’s a little out of sync with the Roytale you all know. How could she have ended up there …? Could I have some time to investigate?

… All right. If you find anything, tell us right away, okay?

I promise … I won’t keep any more secrets from you.

… Well, there’s not much we can do now but head back to town and wait for Ellie.

She can’t say anything for now, but that, there, is how the game’s dialogue handles having two Plachtas.

I understand that you are worried, but you are wearing yourself out. I realize it may not be easy, but you must find some way of taking your mind off things.

Like what?

Well, for example … How about a little alchemy contest? We each synthesize the same item, and the one who achieves higher quality wins. Is that not nice and simple?

It’d be nice and simple, sure, but Plachta’s got some funny ideas about what unwinding means…

I’m not sure I’m in the mood for a contest …

Ngh … I don’t think she’d be THAT mean …

Well then, err … That makes me the winner by default! How do you think the other Plachta would feel if she woke up to learn I had beaten you?

Urgh … I’m not sure I want to imagine it … All right, all right. I’m in.

That is more like it. Now, I propose we see who can synthesize the best Pure Water. There is to be no holding back. I want you trying your hardest. Understood, Sophie?

Of course. May the best alchemist win!

Well, it’s on! Still, I’m not sure where the threshold is for Plachta to declare victory here…

…Because even a Pure Water with just 93 quality yielded this result:

… Yeah, this looks good. Plachta, I’m ready!

No, there is no need. There is no question which of us is the winner.

Are you sure …? Yours looks pretty good to me … Plus, I’m from way in the future. Maybe that’s making a difference?

Perhaps, but I suspect the disparity between us is rooted in something beyond skill.

Something beyond skill … Hey, Plachta. Why did you decide to learn alchemy?

… At first, it was to save my hometown. It suffered terribly from drought, and I hoped that alchemy might be able to help.

And is that still the reason?

No. I succeeded in stopping the drought, so now I am focusing on research alongside a fellow alchemist. The more we research, the more we will learn, and the more items we will be able to synthesize.

This is actually a pretty important thing for Plachta to realize, because her friend kept on doing alchemy for its own sake, never stopped to think about the why, and went on to develop an extremely dangerous type of alchemy that *waves hands at the last act of Sophie 1*

And in case it wasn’t already obvious…

… You’ll figure it out someday. I’m sure of it. After what you just told me, there’s no mistake. You’re definitely the Plachta I know. She’s told me before about the time she saved her hometown from drought.

Th-then it’s true? … That doll Elvira has … is really me from the future?!

Yep! Wow … I can’t believe you’re really her …

Hehe …

Wh-what’s so funny? You’re thinking something rude, aren’t you?!

Ehehe. Not at all!

Good news, you two. It seems like Ellie’s made some progress.

Really?!

Really. Let’s go and pay her a visit!

Even by the standards of “dreamworld isekai” or “different dimension isekai within an isekai”, the Dream Cradle really is otherworldly. Speaking of isekai within an isekai…

Yep. The ruins where you heard Plachta’s voice turned out to be a big clue. I think her soul was drawn to that place by the Dream Core there.

The Dream Core? What’s that?

Umm … I’m not sure how to explain …

Think of it like the beating heart of Erde Wiege.

What’s Plachta’s soul doing there?

The Dream Core is something I made so that people could live in this world. It takes in the dream visions people see when they sleep … and uses them to maintain Erde Wiege.

I see …

So that means we gotta fight the big fish again … This is gonna be one heck of a rough day.

No worries. I put that water dragon there to guard the Dream Core. I’ve told it not to hurt you.

Hahah. Whew … We owe you one.

:toot:

The biggest question now is how we capture her soul once we find it.

Right … If only we had a Soul Stone, I could synthesize something to catch it …

If it’s a rare item you need, Pirka and I might just be able to help!

Ah, between Roytale’s two best merchants, they will surely find what you need.

Hold up. Are we sure they can even be found on this side?

I don’t know, but Pirka might have a clue. Let’s head to her shop and ask.

… Yeah. It’s a long shot, but it’s worth a try.

But first, the game wants me to continue Pirka’s character arc before getting on with the main story:

Oh no, she’s sleeping again …

Fwahhh … Welcome … Welcome …

Don’t you worry. Like I told you, I’ll wake up right as soon as a customer comes in!

Now I think I’m more worried than ever …

It’s fine, it’s fine! It’s my shop, so I make the rules!

Oh no no no … This is bad.

Wh-What’s wrong?

How could I let this happen …? This is a serious problem with serious consequences! I left something of extreme value right here …!

Something valuable? And you say you lost it?

Wait, you mean you drank it yourself?! I thought it was stolen while you were asleep …

Ugh, nooo! This is the worst! I can’t function without my pick-me-up milk …!

Ahaha … Alright, in that case, I’ll bring some over right away!

Holy cow, really?! Yes please! Make sure to get the best one!

Sure thing! I know all about milk, thanks to Cory!

Corneria’s hair is shaped like a cat’s ears, so her loving milk always checked out to me. Pirka looks decidedly un-feline by comparison. Anyway, main story progression time!

Oh, Alette! What’s got you so riled up?

A Soul Stone … I don’t think I’ve heard of one before. What do they look like?

Look like? Um … They’re just like ordinary stones, but they’re perfectly round.

A perfectly round stone … Hmm, I wonder …

Wait, really? You have one?

I’m pretty sure I have something that fits that description. Lemme just take a look in the back.

That’s not true. If you hadn’t thought to ask Pirka, this could have taken us days. Besides … I did actually have a tool that could help find Plachta’s soul. We could have used my Compass of Hades, if only I hadn’t dropped it when I came to this world … I know what’s gone is gone, but it’s frustrating to have lost it just when we need it most …

If I lost something that valuable, frustrated wouldn’t even begin to describe how I’d be feeling …

Phew … Sorry about the wait. Is this the stone you were looking for?

I’ll take that as a yes, then. I picked it up by chance ages ago, before I even met Alette. The owner told me it was extremely rare, so I snapped it up … but I couldn’t find a buyer.

I suppose something that looks like an ordinary rock is kind of a tough sell …

Hahaha …

Anyway, I’m guessing you have a use for this?

Yep! I really need it to help Plachta!

I see … Then it’s yours, free of charge. Just hurry off and help her, okay?

Wait, I can’t just …

Don’t worry about it. It’s not doing anyone any good sitting around collecting dust in my storeroom.

Pirka … Thank you. I’ll use it to save Plachta, just you watch!

Well aren’t we glad Pirka got suckered, bought a nondescript perfectly round stone, and ate a huge loss for our sake! Still, Sophie is the one person in this world who has a use for this. So!

I just need to think about what I’m going to make … Souls are formless, fragile things, so I’ll need something that can transport one safely. Let’s see … Something good for transportation … that I can make from nearby materials …

And if I attune the Soul Stone to Plachta’s Soul … Alright, I think I’ve got an idea, more or less. Now I just have to make it!

We’ll be waiting on that! I have a massive backlog of events to get through, having beelined for the Elvira fight last update. What brought everyone else to Erde Wiege in the first place? Let’s start right at home…

Aspirations

What is it?

Well … It is concerning the doll version of me. What exactly happened to her? What led me to abandon my human form and transfer my soul into a doll?

Um, well …

Could you tell me why?

If I explain why Plachta took on a doll’s body, I’d also have to tell you about some things that happened in the past. But I feel like it isn’t my place to talk about it, since it’s so important to both of you …

I’m sorry, I know that might seem unfair.

No, there is no need to apologize. It is as you say. I got caught up in how intriguing the matter is and neglected to consider the other Plachta. Once I get stuck on something, I lose sight of everything else. It is an unfortunate habit of mine.

(Even her earnestness reminds me of the other Plachta … )

Let’s get Pirka’s milk and while we’re here, chat with her roommate…

Welcom–

Huh? What for? It’s not another unusually-shaped ore, is it?

Nah, I already sold that thing. More importantly, I wanted to thank you! Remember all that stuff you gave me? I made a killing off of it!

What?! You did?! But it wasn’t even anything useful …

Maybe that’s how you feel, but I could see their true potential. Don’t you know? Pretty much anything touched by alchemy is always in high demand!

You did tell your customers that they won’t actually do anything, right?

You betcha! Lying’s bad for business! I explained that they were mistakes, and so could be used only for decorative purposes. Still, people snapped them up with a smile! I set the prices high, but I got no complaints.

… So, even alchemical failures have value?

There’s nothing under the sun that I can’t sell. Once you know the technique, anything goes!

Ahaha … But, I’d never be able to do that. If Plachta found out I was selling failed alchemy projects, she’d flip her lid …

Hmm … I’d say they’re plenty successful, since they’re making for a bunch of satisfied customers.

Heheh. Just hearing that is enough to make me happy, too.

… Ahhh! Delicious!

Wow, chugging it down right after waking up … That’s impressive.

Chugging milk is the best way to show your respect for it! Anyway, I gotta say, this is the tastiest dairy product I’ve had in a long time.

Hehe! You like it?

I LOVED it! The flavor, the thickness, the aroma, the aftertaste … Everything about it was perfect! Hmmm … You’ve proven yourself worthy, Sophie. Come! Join me!

Join you? Are you trying to hire me?

My dream is to make my clan even greater than it is right now! It’ll be real nice if an alchemist such as yourself joined up! Also, you know where to get the best milk! C’mon, pretty please!

Ahaha! Why do I get the feeling that’s the real reason why you want me to join?

I value your alchemy skill and your milk network equally! So will you join? Will you?

Hehehe. I’ll have to say no, but I appreciate the thought. Even if it was just a joke!

Awww, but I’m serious … Boo. Well, if you ever change your mind, you know where I am!

Yep, just fine! Plachta’s even letting me use her atelier.

I’m glad to hear it. If something does come up, though, I’m always happy to lend an ear.

Thanks, Kati. Do you know a lot about Erde Wiege?

You could say that. I’ve been around long enough to know what’s what. Next to most other residents, I’m practically a fixture here.

Do you ever find yourself missing things from your old life?

Sometimes, sure. I left a lot of memories back there.

Have you thought about going home?

Hmmm … Not really, no. I don’t have much of a reason to leave.

Even though things are completely different here?

Eh, only if you start thinking about it too hard. It’s really not all that different from moving abroad. I’ve still got a house, a job, friends … It’s nice and peaceful … Doesn’t get better than this. Well, you only just got here. You’ll see what I mean after a little while.

I don’t know … There are things I need to do back home, so I can’t stay forever. I’ll definitely do some exploring while I’m here, though. It’s a whole new world, after all.

I get the feeling this conversation was supposed to happen much earlier given its contents.

Yeah. I thought I’d ask Kati, but …

My sincerest apologies for the owner of this establishment. Please, take a seat. I won’t be long.

Thanks, Gnome! Alright, time to dig in!

Is the dish not to your liking?

Oh, no, it’s not that. I mean, it’s tasty, but it feels like something’s missing …

… I see. I’m terribly sorry. I’m not a very experienced cook, I’m afraid.

Alright, let me see. Sophie, I’m just going to sneak a bite. Okay, I see the problem. Sure, this is good enough to serve, but … Next time, add more salt and cook it on a higher heat. That’ll add depth to the flavor.

It will?

I-I’ll go remake it straight away! Thank you so much, Miss Kati!

Make enough for me too~

… Well, there you have it, Sophie. Sorry to have postponed your meal.

If you’re that good, why aren’t you the one handling the cooking?

Ask me no questions and I’ll tell you no lies! Phew, I’m starving …

Olias, I was wondering. Did you work as a bodyguard before you came here?

… Nah, back then I was a merc. I only started guardian’ when I got here. The work’s pretty much the same, but folk are far more quick to hire a bodyguard than a merc.

Wow, I didn’t know … So that’s why you’re so strong and popular.

Ah … Well, that’s ‘cause I’ve been doin’ it for ages now, too.

If I recall correctly, you commenced your work before I arrived here.

Hold on. How long ago was that?

… Well, long enough that no matter how much I rest up, I can’t get rid of all the built-up exhaustion.

Oh … There he goes. Olias sure is a free spirit, isn’t he?

… Alas, it has happened again. Olias has a tendency to vanish the moment he is asked about the length of time he has spent here.

… Maybe there’s something he doesn’t want to talk about?

I cannot say, but this is a special place. The fact of the matter is that he has chosen to remain here. It is perhaps not right for others to pry into his reasons.

Oh, Diebold!

Hm? Oh, greetings, Sophie.

Hello. What are you doing here?

I am waiting on the arrival of a client. I may have delivered myself too early, however.

Oh, I see.

Um … You’ll be going outside of town, right? Will you be going far?

No, our schedule dictates that we return by nightfall. I do not imagine the destination will be far.

Oh, okay.

… My humblest apologies, Sophie. I have never been a man of many words. Olias was indeed correct to brand me gloomy. It must be tedious to converse with me, is it not?

No, I don’t mind. And I don’t think you’re gloomy. I would say you’re just … calm and mature.

Is that so …? Thank you for your kind words.

Haha! You sure do like making money, huh.

You betcha! That’s what brought me here, you know. My dream of becoming rich.

That’s your dream?! Well, I guess it’s good to be honest about it … Wait, why come to Erde Wiege to make that a reality? Couldn’t you have done that back home?

You’re not wrong there … but in my case, well … what I really needed was time.

What do you mean?

Hm, basically … our business back home crumbled. And then the debts started piling up. We only had a month left to scrape together the interest, at the very least, or they’d take the store.

I’m sorry to hear that … Is it a lot of money?

… Come again?

10,000,000. Ten times a million. It’s a big store and it’s been in the family for generations. It takes a lot to keep it afloat.

B-b-but what are you going to do?! Alette, there’s no way you could raise that much!

Ah, the loan’s not really an issue. I’ve already earned enough here to pay that off. Not in Cole, exactly, but I’ve been rounding up big-ticket items.

What could be worth anything near that much …?

That’s what being a merchant is all about! Searching high and low for the best items you can find. And this world is made from dreams, right? So, every so often, a real juicy rarity shows up. Usually from people who’ve come from the past, looking to seel what they’ve brought along with them. If I can hang on to those antiques, you can bet they’ll be worth a fortune back home!

Oh, I see … So, that’s why you’re always so focused on earning money.

Well, I’m the daughter of merchants, after all. I’ve never NOT been interested in turning a profit … But, just paying back the debt won’t be enough to save the business alone. That’s why I wanna keep on earning Cole here, so I can go home a mega millionaire!

Raising that much Cole is impressive on its own, but you’re still going to keep going … You really are amazing, Alette! That kind of devotion is inspiring!

Haha! It’s never too late for you to start saving, Sophie!

I was feeling a little peckish, so I thought I’d stop by for a bite to eat.

Sure thing. Just let me go get Gnome.

This again? Kati, can you even really cook?

… Ugh, fine. Just this once.

Wait, you'll actually make something for me?

This is a one-time offer, and it’s not going to be anything fancy, so no complaints.

Uuugh, I’m stuffed … I ate way too much …

Huh. You said you just wanted a bite, but you polished off the whole thing anyway.

It was so good, I just couldn’t help myself … Wait, so you CAN cook?!

You thought I couldn’t? I do run a tavern, you know.

Then why aren’t you doing the cooking? You’d have people lining up for food this good.

I honed my skills so I could feed myself, not so I could impress strangers.

B-But aren’t those skills the reason you’re running a tavern in the first place?

Yep, and I put them to use directing Gnome! With a little advice, his dishes turn out just right.

That’s such a waste of her talents …

If there are so many monsters around Roytale, why don’t they ever come to town?

Trust me, they do. Actually, just a few days ago …

Indeed. We were summoned to fend off such an interloper.

Oh, so the monsters do cause trouble for the town?

Yeah, but it’s mostly structural stuff, like torn-up fields and broken fences. We don’t see people getting hurt in town.

The bodyguards and mercenaries among us serve as a kind of independent guard. Small monsters are tolerated, but the ones that can do hard are certainly not.

There’s someone out on patrol right now. But since they stick to the outskirts, you’d never know it.

I see … So it’s thanks to their hard work that everyone can live in peace.

Elvira might look young, but she’s far older than any of us.

I get that. I just figured she’d be more mature, or something.

Personality aside, she’s exactly how I’d pictured her. Back when she first called out to me, I thought she sounded pretty young.

I was quite startled by her appearance, myself. I thought she might not be flesh and blood.

You figured she’d be more mystical-like, huh?

Gods are not bound by our mortal constraints. Though she truly looks human, and so young …

I keep telling you, she’s much older than the lot of you.

What about you, Plachta?

Oh, I guess I wasn't expecting anything in particular. Since she didn’t really show herself when she brought us here, I assumed she didn’t want to be seen. So, why waste any time trying to picture her?

Man, that’s cold …

Well, even if I HAD given it any thought, I never would have imagined her looking like that.

Yeah, that figures.

I’m kinda relieved, actually. Now I know that she’s not something scary looking.

Alright! In the forest, there’s an exit to the northwest I ignored in favor of the swamp last time. Going there…

Kids

…dammit, kids

Huh? Kids? Here?!

Hey, you lot! What’re you doing in a place like this?!

:haw: Whoopsy, we’ve been spotted!

You know it isn’t safe out here! Come on, I’m taking you straight back to town!

Unfortunately … Though I must admit I can sympathize. There are few places for children to play in town, which must make things rather dull.

Honestly, why are they even here? It’s as if they’ve forgotten all about fulfilling their dreams.

Haha … there’s not much you can do about that. They’re just kids, after all.

Eh, there ain’t nothin’ wrong about bein’ full of curiosity!

Ramizel, what happened to those kids?

Oh, I took them back to their guardians. And you’d better believe they’re getting an earful. It is as Plachta said, you’ve got to do your best if you want to realize your dreams. Still, games play an important role in a child’s development. Running wild and playing is also necessary for the fulfilment of their dreams.

Learning through play, huh … Children are more complicated than I thought.

Well, the way I see it, you’re still a kid yourself.

Aw, c’mon. It’s not THAT insulting. Besides, we’ve got work to do.

She’s right, you know. Let’s get a move on, before we waste any more time.

We found those kids at the entrance to the Misty Garden and got warped back to town when Ramizel dragged them home; at least we can fast travel back there.

From now on, when we find landmarks, someone will get AP. In this case, Olias gets 2 for coming to the Beast’s Dwelling. Moving on to the exit…

We’ve arrived at the Illusion Vale!

The traits we get from materials in this zone are far more potent than those on anything we’ve gathered up until now. We also start seeing traits like this which do nothing on their own, but turn into the really good stuff when merged with similar traits. And pay attention to how many stars each trait has; that will have implications when playing the greenhouse game.

Monsters here are also far stronger than in the Misty Garden and even the next dungeon we'll be heading to. Still, they’re eminently beatable with bomb spam, and the loot is well worth it. Now let’s put some of the traits made available here to use.

I attach Sign of Growth to a White Neutralizer, which I then put in some Refresh Oil with a Taun that has King of the Hill…

And my Refresh Oil comes out with Trusty Leader, which has this very nice effect for weapons! (If you played at launch, you’d remember this description being ATK/DEF/SPD+25 and its evolutions being +50 and +100; they never actually gave boosts that high and their descriptions have been corrected accordingly.)

Refresh Oil being Fuel, it can be used in Pure Water, which can then go into any neutralizer and thus most anything I can synthesize. And when I obtain the trait to upgrade Trusty Leader, I can have neutralizers or Pure Water on hand to easily do so. Fuel items also can be used in Polish. Let’s make that right now.

Element switch in action! This Polish with Trusty Leader also counts as Sand, and thus can be used as an ingredient in the next tier of Ingot.

Aspirations 2

I am simply glad to have been of service.

Is that Diebold?

Indeed. This is Sophie, an alchemist.

Hello. Were you doing bodyguard-y things again today?

Correct. We returned but a moment ago.

:eng101: Are you really sure you don’t want a bonus? I feel bad making you fight all those monsters.

You needn’t worry yourself. Those monsters were but mere trifles.

:eng101: Hm … As expected of a knight. I’ll come to you again the next time I need a bodyguard, Diebold.

Huh?

Diebold, wait! Were you really a knight?

Indeed, but that is all in the past. There is nothing more to tell.

I see … That must be why he is so strong …

Oh boy, you’re in a bad mood, Olias … Did something happen?

S’nothing … Just that customer said they’d hire me as their bodyguard, only to suddenly turn ‘round and go with Diebold instead! And right before we were gonna head out, too! They spotted Diebold and said they wanted him!

That’d put anyone in a bad mood. What a rude customer!

Right?! You think so too, don’t you?! I’ve got way more experience as a bodyguard, and I’m a ton more popular … Tch!

But, Diebold really went and accepted the job? He must have seen how angry you were.

Huh? Nah, I didn’t get angry in front of him. ‘Cause it’s not weird for customers to be real picky ‘bout their bodyguard.

Huh? Really?

If someone’s gotta hire a bodyguard, that means they’re in some danger, right? They’ve got their life staked on this decision. Course they’re gonna be careful about who they choose, down to the last minute. It’d be super lame of me to get angry at a customer just ‘cause I wasn’t chosen.

W-wow, that’s a really rational way of looking at it … But then, why are you angry?

… I managed to hold back in front of the customer.

Ahaha … He can be a bit childish … But, I guess that’s also a part of what makes Olias so popular.

Gnome, are you okay? You look like you’ve barely got a moment to breathe.

Oh, just fine. Miss Kati always says that “a busy store is a happy store,” and I’m inclined to agree.

… Where IS Kati, anyways? It’s not very nice of her to run off and leave you with the lion’s share of the work …

Haha, you sound just like Miss Kati. She’s always telling me I should take a leaf out of her book.

Wait, she is?

So, what’s keeping you from taking her advice?

… Before I came here, I hadn’t been afforded much of an opportunity to do anything for myself. When I arrived, I was painfully ignorant of everything. I hadn’t a clue where to start. And then Miss Kati appeared. She provided me with a roof over my head, and even offered me work despite my inexperience.

… So that’s how you ended up here.

Mhm. I’ve gotten to experience so much through this job, and it’s all thanks to Miss Kati. So I don’t mind taking on a bit of extra work. It’s the least I can do to show my appreciation.

… She sure is lucky to have someone like you around, Gnome.

Sophie! I wanted to thank you for being such a great customer.

I should be the one thanking you. I mean, you’re always restocking items for me!

Actually … There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.

Oh?

You see, I was wondering if there were any other ways I could help you out.

Really? You’d do that?! I’ll warn you, I might put in some big orders …

No worries. The local tradesmen ask me all the time.

Whenever I’ve got materials that I want more of, I’ll come straight to you!

Sure, just drop on by whenever. Remember, though, it isn’t free!

This service becomes available after spending an indeterminate amount of Cole restocking your usables; I suppose I finally passed the threshold throwing bombs enough times in the Illusion Vale.

Anyway, let’s duplicate the Polish I made earlier. It’s got a much lower unit price than the upper-tier Ingot I’d use it in, so this decision is more cost effective. And when it comes to Pirka, we are going to appreciate pinching our pennies very, very soon.

Aspirations 3

I am, but … What happened to Gnome?

Oh, I just sent him out shopping. He’ll be back soon, so why don’t we have a chat while we wait?

That’s … not really anything worth thanking me for.

Hey, just let me have this one. As both his boss and his self-appointed guardian.

… Guardian? Oh, right. Gnome did say that you’d given him a place to stay.

Pretty much. Did you know he’s from a noble family? And he’s their only son, to boot. He’s been groomed as a heir since birth. The poor kid hasn’t got an idea about the real world.

Th-That’s what his home life was like?

There’s no way a pampered prince like that would be able to make it on his own, right? That’s why I took him in. Taught him everything I know. Tried to broaden his horizons, and so on. He was floundering at first, but now he can practically run the place by himself.

You know … he tries so hard because he’s grateful for the opportunities you’ve given him, Kati.

Mhm, he never does less than his best. I should know, I’ve seen with my own eyes! Well, his cooking is a bit bland, and he still gets overwhelmed when the place is busy, but …

You’re pretty impressive yourself, Kati. You’ve gone above and beyond in your role as a guardian.

Hey, I get stuff done when I have to! I’d just rather coast by when I don’t.

Can you tell me more about her, please?

Oh, you mean Cory? Umm, well, she’s a friend of mine, and …

Actually, I specifically want to know about this Cory’s clan. She can duplicate just like me, so something tells me that she’s family …

Oh, I see … To tell you the truth, I don’t know much. For a long time, Cory didn’t know where she came from, and it really bothered her. After a lot of investigation, she finally found out that she might be from a country to the east.

that, there, was Gust’s justification to bring her back for L&S.

Huh, is that so … Do you happen to know anyone who can duplicate, other than me and Cory?

Sorry, I don’t. I’d actually never heard of that kind of power until I met Cory.

Aww, okay. I guess my clan still isn’t very famous in your time.

If that’s true, it’s really bad news … How is the clan meant to rebuild from that?

(She must be really concerned about this … )

With all that out of the way, let’s make the Soul Cage! For these syntheses, the only thing that matters is having the ingredients. So Sophie chucks them all into the cauldron and…

Grandmother and Granddaughter

Impressive as ever, Sophie.

She was worried about you, so she came to see how you were doing. In secret, of course.

I-I mean … this IS all my fault …

Heheh. Thanks for worrying, but it’s okay. It came out just fine.

Now we can transport Plachta’s soul safely.

I’m glad to hear you both like it.

… You’re amazing, Sophie. I can’t believe you made something like this so easily.

She’s right, you know. You’re a much better alchemist than I’ll ever be.

Ehehe …

Hehe. Aren’t you lucky to have such a talented granddaughter, Rami?

Wh-what? What’s wrong? Why are you all looking at me like that?

You know, Ellie … it’s not very polite to talk about me like I’m an old lady …

But Sophie really is your granddaughter, isn’t she?

… She’s my what?

W-Wait a second, Elvira! Is that really true? Is Ramizel … really my grandma?

Of course … Why are you all acting so …?

“dig UP, stupid”

Ohhh, I see. You hadn’t realized it, huh?

I-I … see. Did you know about this, Sophie?

Um, I had my suspicions, but I couldn’t be sure … After all, I only ever knew my grandmother as an old lady.

Yeah, right. I … I guess that makes sense …

Um, err … Should I … still keep calling you Ramizel?

I … suppose? It’s not … I mean … It doesn’t sound wrong to me or anything …

… I am sure this must be a lot for both of you to take in. However, we must not let it distract us from searching for Plachta’s … for my future self’s soul.

Y-yeah, that’s right! We need to start looking right away! … Right, Ramizel?

Y-yeah … Of course … Erm … It’s … nice to meet you, um …

R-right. Same here …

*Sigh* … Perhaps it would be for the best if you did not say anything further for now …

Soul Searching

Err, uh. Sophie …

Um … Hello.

Yes, um … Hello. … Why are we acting like two people who’ve never met before?

Um, I don’t think of you as a stranger …

No … Well, we’re not strangers, after all …

Um … Maybe we should, uh …

Yeah, um … See you …

( … She definitely isn’t over the shock of learning that she has a granddaughter. Not that I’m having the easiest time coming to grips with her being my grandma either … )

Yeah, let’s go soul searching! Anything to get their minds off that bombshell.

How is it, Sophie? Can you hear Plachta’s voice?

No, not a word … And her voice was so clear last time …

Elvira said the Dream Core draws souls in, right? Maybe we gotta get a little closer.

… It seems the dragon truly has been pacified.

Looks that way … Hey, Sophie, you can come out now.

Got it!

… Plachta? Can you hear me? If you can, say something!

Come on, Plachta … Please …

… No response, I take it.

I don’t get it. Elvira said she should be here …

Perhaps she is not as close to the Dream Core as we thought, but rather somewhere else within the ruins?

Then we’ll just have to walk around calling her name!

Alette … I’m afraid it wouldn’t be that easy. These ruins are extensive.

Oh. I guess I hadn’t thought of that …

Hey, Ramizel. Are there other Dream Cores?

Oh! Of course! That’s it! I’m not sure exactly how many, but I do know there are more in other places.

Then maybe that’s where Plachta’s soul has gone!

Yeah … Let’s head back to Ellie and ask her where the nearest one is!

Right!

That was an extraordinary insight, Olias. Consider me impressed.

Hah! … Now we just gotta hope it gets us somewhere …

Hmm … I think you might be right. Every Dream Core is vital to Erde Wiege, but they’re all made from different kinds of dreams. So there’s definitely a chance that Plachta was drawn to the one that she finds the most comfortable.

You were right, Olias!

Don’t go gettin’ all excited. That still means we don’t know where she’s at …

So where is the closest Dream Core?

It’s deep in a cave.

Could you explain in a little more detail?

Erm, umm … A cave south of Roytale, I think? Through the swamp past the western forest?

Right … I know the place, but are you sure there’s a Dream Core there?

Well, deep inside the cave is the entrance to the other dimension where the Dream Core actually is.

A cave on the other side of the swamp. Got it. Let’s get going as soon as we–

Um … Good question. I certainly have it, but …

Ramizel … You haven’t replenished its power, have you?

Ahaha … ha … Well, I haven’t really needed to go there recently … And besides, it’s kind of a pain to do …

Then how about you ask Sophie to do it?

Me?!

Good idea. I bet Sophie will be able to do a better job than I ever could. Oh, and you’ll need the recipe too.

Good grief, Ramizel …

Oh, I’d say it’s only natural to leave things to an expert!

(I know she’s not quite the same woman I knew, but it’s still nice … ) Hehe … All right. Just leave it to me!

I’m sure you’ll do wonderfully. Right, let’s return to the atelier!

No need to bask in the sun or get splashed by a waterfall for inspiration this time. We can just recharge the Glacial Larimar! And I’m well-covered for the ice and light components needed.

Alright, this should do it.

You seriously are incredible, Sophie. Far better than me.

You really think so?

Of course I do! Did you learn all this by yourself?

That is to say, someday I will be Sophie’s mentor. I admit, it is still a little hard to believe …

Ahahah. I know how you feel. I’m still trying to get my head around her being my– Um.

*Sigh* … I just wish Ellie had found a more tactful way to tell us …

Hey, what was a painfully awkward moment for Sophie and Ramizel was comedy gold for us! And only Elvira could have pulled it off

As do I. Believe me, it was no less awkward for me than it was for you.

We can talk this over properly once we’ve dealt with the matter at hand. Right now, we have a soul to find.

Nothing matters more than a life, right?

Exactly.

Great! I’ve just finished!

Huh? What have you two been up to? You look a little ragged.

We just got done with a job. Seriously though, what was with those things?

What happened?

Some particularly vicious monsters were reported, so we went to take care of them …

Well it sure doesn’t sound like it’ll be happily ever after after we rescue Plachta, huh?

Never been put through my paces like that before. Some kinda new species, I reckon.

That’s worrying … We certainly need to make sure the town is safe from them. … But, that can wait until we’ve rescued Plachta’s soul. Do you two need a breather?

Indeed … Nothing matters more than a life.

Hm? Did I say something strange?

Nope … Right, let’s get going!

I don’t HAVE to freeze the swamp over to proceed, but doing so lets me gather materials I couldn’t find my first time here.

Demolition

Ah … It seems our path is blocked.

The cave is on the other side. Ramizel, is there another way around?

This road is the only one I know. I swear this boulder wasn’t here last time …

But we could push this thing all day and it wouldn’t budge an inch. What’s the plan now?

… I may have an idea.

Oh, really?

I happen to know a bomb recipe for just this situation. Perhaps that will take care of it.

Well then, let’s go back to the atelier. We can come back once we’ve synthesized it.

I once used a blasting charge to divert a river in order to save my hometown from drought. That is the bomb I wish to try using now.

Wow! That sounds like just what we need!

So I hope. Now all we have to do is synthesize it.

Plachta’s got the right idea! And this will be convenient for recycling my outdated bombs. All that matters is that we CAN make this one. (and this is the first I’ve heard of using explosives to save her hometown from drought; she and her friend first made fertilizer to try and solve it.)

It looks like you’ve finished.

Yep! And it’s all thanks to you.

W-where did that come from? I do not believe I did anything particularly special …

Ahem! Anyway, now we can do something about that boulder. We ought to hurry back there and test this bomb.

Phew … Thank goodness it worked.

Yeah … I bet the town engineers would pay a fortune for those! If only some generous alchemist could make me some …

Hey, no business schemes while we’re on the job.

Good grief. You two really never change …

Heehee! I’ll think about it once we get back. For now, we’d better keep going.

Music: Rime Flower

Gotta slide on in to actually arrive. Somewhere here is the alternate dimension.

I’ve been slow to show off the game’s photo mode, but hey, this is a good place to do so!

Looks like it’s the end of the road.

Indeed … But we have brought the means to pass.

Try making it snow, Sophie. That should open the way.

Sure! I’ll give it a shot!

Freezing the lagoon also brought in all these bats!

I suck at getting what I want with Major Gathering, but this is a good haul for Saphir Gemstone. Now, then!

Frozen World

Here it is! We found it!

It looks just like the one we found in Near-Forest. I wonder where this one leads?

I can’t say for sure, but there’s a Dream Core there, so it can’t be that bad.

I’d certainly like to think so …

Right. Nothin’ for it but to jump on in!

A frozen fortress! If you listen to the music, it’s the same track that played back when Sophie and Plachta chanced upon the Dream Tree in the real world.

Yeah. We stick around here too long, even our souls are gonna catch a chill …

Whoops … Sorry. I didn’t mean it like that.

idgi

No … It’s okay. It really is too cold. We shouldn’t stay here too long.

I agree. Let’s find that Dream Core as quickly as we can.

Huh? Somethin’ up, Diebold?

Not as such, but … I have a bad feeling.

What kind of bad feeling?

It is as though I sense a monster close by … and a ferocious one at that.

C’mon, don’t joke around! You’re making me scared …

Diebold isn’t joking. If his instincts say we should watch out, then we should listen.

Yeah. This guy’s “bad feelings” are usually right on the money.

How very … reassuring …

… Got it. Keep your eyes peeled for monsters, everyone.

Olias and Ramizel are onto something here:

Opening the floodgates and freezing the water that comes is how we progress through the Snowy Corridor. And while it’s snowing, the faucets are frozen and can’t be turned; I have to make it sunny to do so.

Puni Statue

What’s it doin’ in the middle of the path?

Perhaps it has something to do with the dream visions that formed this place?

Who’d dream about a ginormous puni statue? That sounds more like a nightmare to me …

You think so? I think it’s adorable!

Really …? It gives me the creeps …

So, what’re we gonna do about it? It looks way too big to push outta the way.

I expect we would not have much luck climbing it either. We must find another way to–

None here. I think that’s our only option.

Breakin’ out one of those bombs, eh? Then we’ll leave it to you.

That means making another Demolition Bomb! Back to town…

Ah …

Um, Ramizel …? I, uh …

Hmmm …

Sophie, don’t you think this is a little absurd?

Wh-what is?!

This … awkwardness! We act perfectly normal when we’re with everyone else, but freeze up when it’s just the two of us. I’m not usually like this … Neither of us are. We … we can’t enjoy our time together, and I hate that! It’s such a waste!

I-I feel the same way, but …

I … don’t think what we are in our own worlds should matter here. And seeing me as my young and vivacious self must make it feel all the more unreal, right?

Young and vivacious …? Um, I guess …

You and me? Friends …?

Yes. Don't you think we’re better off like that right now? It’ll be a lot more fun, at least. So, what do you say …? Why don’t we start over as friends?

Hehe … Alright! I think I’d be a lot happier with that, too.

Phew, thank goodness … I was so afraid you’d say no. Then, let’s try this again … Hi, I’m Ramizel. Nice to meet you!

I’m Sophie. Nice to meet you too!

Now, let’s try and make BETTER bombs. Critical+ and Critical++ merged into Half Critical on the Pure Water that went into this Red Neutralizer.

Critical and Critical+ combined for Critical Finish, which merged with Half Critical to become Certain Critical on this Flame Emperor Dust–a necessary ingredient for…

…this Draco Bomb! Having this has the added bonus of freeing up another regular Bomb to stick in a Demolition Bomb. (And note that only our alchemists and Alette can use it, hence why Olias and Diebold are greyed out.) Now let’s go duplicate it…

Bombs

What’s the matter, Pirka?

Let’s just say I can no longer ignore the clutter problem in my warehouse … I’ve gotta clean the palace out, but I have so many mystery items that I don’t know how!

Mystery items …? But why did you gather so many things you don’t understand?

Psh. Because mysterious items have mysterious values, of course! Think about it! It might just be junk … but it COULD be insanely valuable! Business is all about testing your luck, including on items full of secrets! If you can’t be lucky, you’ll never make it in the cutthroat world of economics!

I guess you’re right … Bad luck can spell doom for anyone, no matter how great they are.

Exactly! You need both skill and luck!

But didn’t you say that your warehouse is bursting at the seams with all these mystery gambles? How can you test your luck with them if you’re just hoarding them?

Ahaha, now that’s a good question! Guess they’re not doing me much good locked away in there … Oh, but maybe if I leave them be, things’ll eventually get all over the place and naturally attract customers.

At that point, I think we’ll have bigger problems to worry about …

Well, let’s duplicate that Draco Bomb! One each for Plachta and Alette; at this point, I figured that Ramizel's Burning Rod covered her bases more than adequately for fire damage.

Eek! The plinth got blown to bits …

THAT’S what you’re worried about? I wanna know where the Puni went!

It went blasting off like Team Rocket, it can’t show up again soon, right?

Hmph … I can only hope we don’t encounter it blocking our path again somewhere else …

If we do, we can always use another bomb. We ought to press forward.

Plachta: … …
Everyone else: :stare:

Usual drill: open floodgates and freeze the water, thaw to uncover a path blocked off by ice, then freeze again to advance on the frozen water. At the end of the zone…

Crystal Puni

What’s wrong, Alette?

Ahhhh!! Look ooooooout!

That thing’s alive?! I thought it was a statue!

Perhaps you’ve earned its ire. You DID just blow it up …

Well, I guess no one would enjoy being blown up while they’re just minding their own business …

It was blocking our way! You can hardly call that “minding their own business”!

… Anyway, it doesn’t look like we’re getting past unless we persuade it to move somehow.

Everything turned out just like Diebold said …

My apologies … I never intended for that to be a prediction.

Whatever the case, if it is standing in our way, it is certainly not our friend. Let us show it the error of its ways.

You know, I think we’re… kind of in the wrong here? Still, this thing won’t move unless we make it, so. Miniboss time!

It has an Ice Aura AND it’s weak to fire? Aren’t we glad we made that Draco Bomb!

Even Olias and Diebold have Bombs with these great damage/critical traits to lay on the hurt. Diebold especially appreciates this since he’s otherwise locked to physical damage, which the Crystal Puni resists. Unfortunately, that physical resistance means Ramizel’s Burning Rod doesn’t hit as hard as I’d like.

Imagine a Draco Bomb crashing into this mini-boss until it’s finally nuked from orbit; fitting way to end this fight.

…yeah, maybe I should have made it sunny to remove its defense buff.

Upon entering the next zone, a loud oink roars through the corridor…

D-did you hear that?

Do not let it concern you, Alette. Whatever that was, it is a long way from us.

R-really? Phew …

Well, maybe you should be a little worried. After all, it came from much deeper in the cave.

We are likely to stumble across whatever it is sooner or later …

Huh? So I SHOULD be scared!

:iceburn:

Fear not. I will see us all safe and sound.

I’m talkin’ about me, not him! Tch …

Hehe … Well, I’ll be counting on you, Olias.

Heh! At least you know what you’re talkin’ about, Sophie. Don’t you worry. Whatever shows up, I’ve got your back!

Good grief. They are all taking this far too lightly …

They’re our friends. We know they’ll come through in a pinch.

You are right, of course … I shall be counting on them, too.

By making it sunny or rainy, the enemies I need to fight for Olias and Alette’s weapons spawn. Speaking of, let’s go back and-

owwwwwwww. Using those Draco Bombs with all those good traits attached cost me 2/3 of my Cole!

We don’t need to make the bigger, better ice bomb for the ice dungeon, but rather…

Making it twice AND making a Gold Eisen–one with the Trusty Leader!Polish–unlocks Ramizel’s next rod.

Anyway, the greenhouse–I only have Plant Seeds available, and they’re a pretty poor vector to show off greenhouse abuse because their ingredients are all primary. No neutralizers or anything else I can attach a 5* trait to can go in them.

It’s all I can do to max out yellow on this one and attach a singular 3* trait–and only the singular trait, as weird poo poo happens if you attach multiple traits of varying grades to a seed. After five days, it’ll be ready to harvest…

And here’s the yield! Develop the Body is something I’d want on my endgame armors. Dragonscale Protection and ATK-SPD Supercharge are also great, but not top-end, traits. The former can go on armor and the latter on accessories for now.

These traits (plus Trusty Leader) yield massive stat boosts across the board, but for Enhance the Body and Develop the Body, which scale off a party member’s base stats, they really show their worth when actually equipped. Anyway, I need cash like, right now.

Respite

The era that you’re from … What’s it like?

Huh? In what way?

What kind of country you lived in, what kinds of problems it had, all the latest trends … Tell me whatever you can! Well, if you’ve got time to spare.

I really appreciate you answering all my questions. Sorry to keep you so long, though.

Ahaha … I didn’t think you’d have so much to ask.

Heh heh heh. Now I can fill in three different gaps I had in my history!

Wait, is that why you kept grilling me? And what do you mean by “gaps”?

I’ve been compiling a written history filled with stories from people from all different ages.

You have? But why?

I love compiling all sorts of historical knowledge. It’s a hobby of mine.

So that’s why … I thought you seemed strangely enthusiastic.

Aw, c’mon. You didn’t think I spent ALL my time lazing around, did you?

You didn’t have to answer that one! Oh, whatever. I can’t wait to sit down and record all this after I close up! This is going to be great!

Lucky for me, just actively gathering means I can get plenty of free money from Kati.

Wh-what’s all this about?!

You’ve bought a ton of stuff from my store, so I’ve got a present for you!

Whoa! You mean it?

Course I do! You guys are my best, most favorite customers, after all!

Thanks, Pirka! I’ll be buying even more from you now!

this is very much appreciated after that earlier tab!

Such is the power of the weather tools that they can freeze a mill in its place and free it up to move again. Anyway, for once you want the water off when progressing to…

Soul Searching 2

C-could it be the same monster as before?!

I believe so. Whatever it is, it must be nearby.

… I can’t hear it anymore. I wonder what it was?

A warning to keep our distance, perhaps? But then, surely it would have continued …

So I assume. This must be the source of the roars we heard.

And I was so scared, too! I guess it was just fighting with the local monsters?

Thank goodness. That means we can search for Plachta in peace.

Eh?

Whoa! It’s got that aura thing!

Olias!

Oi, Ramizel, what gives? I thought this thing was supposed to be friendly!

Don’t ask me! Ellie said she’d told it not to attack us!

It didn’t seem to mind us when we first came in. Why would it suddenly just …?

We can speculate later! Ready yourself!

gently caress that noise! First things first, let’s make it sunny to remove its buffs.

It’s got a sturdier aura than even its mistress, so that’ll mean more (Draco) Bomb uses are needed to chew through it.

Like Elvira, it can summon scrubs that will take the hit for it. This time, I don’t have to worry about a reaction skill if I use my fire bombs, although the Apostle is immune to magic damage. And once it’s stunned…

Ramizel’s Burning Rod can do a whopping 2000 damage when it’s stunned, but OOPS I forgot that her Avalanche Naginata also does, well, ice damage, to which this boss is immune.

Also really appreciating the armor I forged for Diebold; he already has the highest defense on the team, but now this boss is just tickling him.

And this is how it all ends: the Wild Hail being at low enough HP that a Draco Bomb crashes through its aura and puts it down for the count.

… It appears we have defeated the beast.

Yeah … Tch. The hell was that all about?

Olias, wait!

Dunno, you see the way it breathed that smoke? it seemed like it had been exorcised of something really nasty?

I don’t know … Perhaps Elvira’s command failed to transmit properly.

I don’t think she'd make that kind of mistake … Well, I HOPE not … But who knows?

Its black aura seemed unpleasantly familiar …

… You mean the monsters we fought before … right?

… I cannot say for certain. As of yet, we simply do not have enough information. In any case, Sophie, now is the time. Call out to Plachta’s soul.

Right! Got it!

Plachta … …

Sophie … Where are you…?

… I can hear her.

She’s really here?!

Yep! I’d recognize her voice anywhere!

… It seems you’ve done it, Sophie.

All you had to go on was her voice, and you still found her … You’re really something else!

You can say that again. This girl’s one of a kind.

… It’s miraculous.

… I couldn’t have done it alone. Without all your help, I would have been totally lost …

Remember, everyone, we aren’t out of the woods yet. If we can’t get Plachta’s soul back to her body, all this will have been for nothing.

Hehehe … You’re right. Hold on just a little longer, Plachta. We’ll get you back to normal in no time …

… Sorry we took so long, Plachta. You must have missed this body.

Please, come back to me!

… Sophie? How is she?

… Nngh …

… Plachta …

Sophie … What happened …?

Awwwww.

Plachta! Oh, thank goodness … Are you okay? How do you feel?

I feel … a little numb, all over …

Erm … Her soul might not have reattached completely yet … B-but it’s just a matter of time! She’ll be fine after a good night’s sleep … I think.

… That’s a relief. Thanks for being honest with me, Elvira.

Ah …!

… I’m still a little unsure of the details, but my body appears to have malfunctioned.

You can say that again! You had us all really worried.

Heh! Count yourself lucky the world’s greatest super bodyguard was there to lend a hand!

I’m just so glad! It’s so nice to see you two reunite!

None of us worked half as tirelessly as Sophie. We merely helped her on her way.

Quite. She hardly knew anything about this world at first, but that never stopped her.

… It appears that there are many questions that must be asked.

Say what you want about isekai, this one is providing opportunities for all sorts of otherwise impossible interactions. Sophie and her grandmother as a young woman, Sophie and her mentor as a teenager, having two Plachtas in the house…

Heheh. And on that note … Sophie … Thank you. I must have caused you a lot of trouble.

It was nothing … Welcome back, Plachta.

It’s good to be back, Sophie.

… The sun has already risen … How is she still sleeping … Sophie, it is morning. Time to wake up.

Hngh … Gnnngh …

What is wrong, Sophie? Hurry and get up.

But I’m still so sleepy … Just gimme one more hour …

One hour? … Ridiculous. Get up this instant!

Urgh … But I’m still tired …!

(Although, it is probably just the relief from saving my future self catching up with her … Once all the built-up tension was released, she reverted to … this state. No, that cannot be. I refuse to believe this is her true form. The other me would never have allowed it … *Sigh* … I may need to have a word with my future self. I fear what may become of Sophie if she continues to be so lazy … Ugh, my head hurts … )

You are finally awake, I see … Goodness, and on such an important day …

An important day? What’s happening?

You forgot?! Gosh, whatever am I going to do with you … Today is a very important day for my future self and Elvira. Do you remember now?

… Oh, right!

You actually did forget, didn’t you? You are unbelievable …

Plachta’s gonna get mad if we don’t hurry! C’mon, Plachta!

How confusing … Having two of me is quite inconvenient, but … also a good learning experience.

Next time, on-

…ouch. Next time, we’ll see why it’s such a big day for Elvira and the other Plachta!

this is why i had to stop

because instead of progressing the story i was making monstrosities like this at 5am in the morning

i've had something like this since the middle of the swamp

e: i found something more directly comparable to what OP crafted in this very update

i think this one was crafted after the missile, but it's been a while since i forced myself to stop so I have no idea

and we're not too far off from where i forced myself to stop

what were you thinking past me?

I mean hey that Draco Bomb is pretty good and has really high quality, and I haven't even really tried to go for the 999 quality loop yet!

...even the stuff I had crafted over the past two updates was like, a good six hours of recording in tandem with all the character subplots, story progression, gathering in the field, progressing down Sophie and Plachta and their combined recipe trees, etc. After having found Plachta's soul, the story slows down a bit and I can't reasonably expect to reach the next alternate dimension dungeon in the next recording session. I think the next two or three will be mostly character subplots plus crafting, with a little main plot on the side. (something else is going to come online that'll get me to spend even more time trying with crafting too.)

e: this past session was like almost six hours of footage for a singular update and the vast, VAST majority of it was me getting those endgame traits I've been harping on about from greenhouse abuse and spreading it around my trait pool

Part 8: Dreams and Purpose (I)

Music: Spooling Dreams
I didn’t want to show it until after Doll Plachta reenters the scene, but the title screen shows a different scene with two characters each time you boot up the game. Since I’ve already beaten the game, it would have shown off some characters and dynamics far before their debuts. Here's another:

Now, on to the game itself!

The Mayor and the Challenge

Wow, look at all these people! I never knew there were so many people in Roytale.

I did not expect such a turnout, either …

I guess this just proves how important it is to the people of Roytale, huh.

Indeed. It is quite a special occasion for a previously mayor-less town to finally induct one. Not to mention–
Remember, Ramizel has been the de facto mayor for the entirety of Roytale’s existence. Who, exactly, can be fit step in her shoes?

Sophie! Plachta!

Heya, slowpokes. Ya do realize it’s about to start?

Ehehe, sorry. We had, um, stuff …

Be honest, Sophie. You slept in.

Aw, Plachta! Don’t call me out like that!

Aw, c’mon!

I do apologize … I never for a moment thought we would be correct in our prediction.

We were talking about what might have been holding the two of you up. Then, Plachta said you probably slept in.

Whaaat?!

*Sigh* … So beneath it all, you truly are just lazy …

I-I’m not lazy! I know everyone says I’m a bit messy, but …

Same thing, kid.

Oho, it appears the festivities are beginning.

Oh, there’s Plachta–

Music: Nemo - Haruka Shimotsuki

Plachta?! But, what’s with the sash?

Ahahah! Lookin’ good! Real nice!

Well, she is Roytale’s first mayor ever! Go big or go home!

Who made that sash? Are you lot to blame for this?!

Awesome, eh? This way anyone can tell she’s the mayor of Roytale from a mile away.

I must offer my apologies … I attempted to stop them, however my efforts proved futile …

It’s fine! I think everyone really likes it.

Plachta looks really embarrassed …

Uh … Does this mean I too will have to wear that someday …

Fantastic. It’s good to see everyone so excited. However, we will need you all to quiet down for a moment. Okay, where should I start? I guess you guys want to hear more about the mayor, huh?

When Ramizel tells the crowd to be quiet, they listen.

Alright, you got it. Well, let’s start with a simple introduction. Can you all see her? This here is Plachta, your new mayor. Plachta here is a little special. She was transported to this world in a kind of accident.

:smith: An accident … That’s terrible …

To tell you all the truth, Plachta would love very much to return to her real world this instant. However, she didn’t want to make more work for all of the people of Roytale, who are already doing their best to achieve their dreams. That’s why she offered to help this town by putting herself to work for a short period.
I believe we can trust in Plachta. She’s got the seal of approval from Elvira, too. Now, all she needs is yours. So, what do you say, good people of Roytale?

:unsmith: We’re happy to have her! This is fantastic news!

:clint: If she’s got Miss Elvira and Ramizel’s approvals, that’s more than enough for me.

:hai: We’re looking forward to having you as our mayor, Plachta!

Thank you all … I am Plachta, and I will serve as the mayor of Roytale starting from today. I swear that I will do all that is within my power to help you realize your dreams as quickly as possible, and … to make this town an even better place to live and improve yourself in.

… We look forward to seeing what you do.

I will be sure to make you all proud.

Hm … Alright.

:aaa: Is that really who I think it is …?!

I, um … err …

Elvira!!

Um, I … It’s nice to meet you all … I, um, I’m Elvira … I created this world and invited you all here, and, uh …

I … I’m a little scared of other people seeing me … because I look like this … But I wanted to speak with you all! So Ramizel helped me muster up my courage to be here!
I want you all to tell me about your dreams. I want to help all of you … So … Um …
Pl-please be friends with me!

:shobon: You’re the goddess who gave us all hope! We’re so happy you’re here!

:swoon: Wow … That’s the real Elvira … We love you, Miss Elvira!

Hehe … Isn’t this great, Ellie?

Yeah …

That was great, Ramizel.

Thank you. I thought a few contrarians might pop up, but I was glad to see everyone give their full support.

You lead this town in all but name. I do not imagine anyone would question your endorsement.

The easier the town is to live in, the easier it is for folk to realize their dreams, yeah? I reckon the townsfolk are just grateful.

You were able to do everything without so much as a plan?! You truly never fail to surprise me …

By the way, where did Elvira and Plachta … err, the mayor, get to?

They’ve gone to Kati’s tavern to discuss some work. The second floor of the tavern has been turned into the mayor’s office.

Oh, cool. Guess I’ll pop by with some congratulatory snacks for them later ♪ Shoot, that’s right! I have to get back to work!

Dang, ya just gone and reminded me that I’ve got a client waitin’ on me! I completely forgot.

I too must tend to my blade.

Alright. I guess I’ll see you guys later.

Yeah. Back to the grind, I s’pose.

Bye, guys! See ya later!

Do let me know if you require my assistance at any point.

Now, let us pay a visit to Elvira and the mayor.

Sounds good. I actually have something I need to talk to Plachta about.

Yes … As do I.

Hey, Plachta! Congratulations on your appointment!

Oh, there you are. Hello, Sophie, Ramizel … and …

…?

*Sigh* … You really are me, after all.

I never expected that coming face to face with my past self would be so painfully embarrassing …

I don’t think there’s anything to be embarrassed about. Even your young self is so nice and proper.

Of course. I am a proper, first-class alchemist.

All that aside, I am very intrigued by your body. What happened to me? To be more precise, how did I manage to transfer my soul?

I guess … it’s no surprise you’re curious about that.

Mightily curious indeed.

Wh-what? I don’t understand what you are talking about.

You will understand when the time comes. Oh, goodness me …
They say we’ll know time travel is a thing when there’s a rash of teenagers getting the living snot beaten out of them by their future selves. The two Plachtas will be testing that thesis in live time :allears:

Returning to the matter at hand, please tell me why I became a doll in the future!

No, I cannot speak with you about that matter here. It is not a tale that can easily be told.

Oh … I see …

Besides …

No, never mind.

Anyway, what are the two of you up to? You mentioned having work to attend to …

Yes. I heard from Kati the other day that some of the townspeople were hurt by monsters near Roytale.

Well, it’s fairly normal for monsters to appear. Olias and the others always fight bravely to take care of them for us.

While I understand there were also some such cases in the past, it appears there has been a significant increase in incidents recently. In addition, reports say these monsters are unusually aggressive, and many have sustained injuries trying to deal with them.

The monsters are getting more aggressive, huh … Actually, I think Olias and Diebold mentioned something like that earlier …

Yes. They spoke of encountering some particularly hostile monsters emanating some sort of an aura …

I too have seen reports of hostile monsters shrouded in dark auras … That is why I wished to ask Elvira what she knows about the monsters, however …

I’m sorry … I don’t know what’s going on with the monsters either. It’s true that when I created this world, monsters were born along with it.

I had hoped we would be able to ask Elvira to do something about the situation … but it seems not.

Unfortunately, it appears that investigating this matter will be my first job as mayor.

I’m sorry … If only I’d done a better job …

Don’t blame yourself, Elvira. None of this is your fault …

Yes, it is the natural by-product of the creation of a world.

I will keep you abreast of any developments in this matter. In the meantime, you should all rest. You must have all drained yourselves helping me.

Will do. I’ll be taking it easy in the atelier.

Do be sure to continue with your alchemy training. There is to be no slacking off until you have passed the alchemy examination. And you … Please keep a good eye on Sophie for me.

Eeep …

Wow … You really are good at this. Your technique is very different from mine.

Ehehe, really?

Definitely … Plachta taught you that, right?

Yeah, she told me her … I guess “secret tricks”? But it was my grandmother who taught me the foundations. I wish I could have learned even more from her …

I see …

B-by the way, I’ve been wondering this for a while, but … don’t you use catalysts?

What are catalysts?

I have also never heard of such a thing. What are they?

I guess you could call them helpful items for synthesizing … Put one in with your ingredients and it’ll give the materials a bit of an extra push to help them connect.

What?! But my grandmother never told me anything about them!

Incredible!

Sw-swapping out your cauldron …? Why would you do that?

I-indeed …? That also piques my curiosity, but for now, catalysts!

Um, right. Well, rather than listening to me give you the rundown, I’m sure this will go faster if you give them a try yourselves. You can start by having a go using some catalysts I have on hand. Here.

Thanks! Alright, let’s get to work …

Sophie, wait. Given this is our first time using a catalyst, how about you and I engage in a little competition?

What? Again?!

Oho, that sounds interesting. In that case, I’ll be the judge.

Hehe. What is the matter, Sophie? You are welcome to pass if you are feeling intimidated.

Fine. I’m in … This may be my first time using a catalyst, but I don’t plan on losing!

We shall see about that!

Okay, I’ll have you both make a Breezy Aroma. I think it’s the perfect choice for two catalyst beginners. Any objections?

Nope!

I can handle anything!

Alright, best of luck to you both. I’m expecting good things ♪

Alright FINALLY, catalysts! If I synthesize a catalyst right, I can have a 6x6 or 7x7 grid AND just like in L&S, components won’t be entirely deleted by overlapping ones! But that’s not all…

All this time, the game’s been gatekeeping the best effects on all our items behind catalysts. When synthesizing with catalysts, I have an option to do so with some of the panels inaccessible; doing so lets me access the highest effect thresholds. If I choose to synthesize without restricted panels like I’ve been doing up to this point, I’ll be shut out from the highest effect thresholds.

Operationally, dropping in a reusable catalyst sounds much more convenient than swapping cauldrons, which was how you got bigger grids in Sophie 1, and IS much more convenient than having to have a dozen Rubies (6x6 grid) or Philosopher’s Stones (7x7) on hand like in L&S.

I’ll start by upgrading my Growlia Catalyst. For now, I just want to max out the Lightning effects. While I hit 7x7, I fell short of Components Divided–the effect that allows component overlap.

That’s okay, because it gave a 7x7 grid to upgrade the Limitia Catalyst to have both a 7x7 grid AND Components Divided! (Not shown is me downgrading the Growlia back to a 5x5–I want one 5x5 grid on hand as it’s easier to fill out rows and columns and maximize my Super Success odds on a smaller grid. And don’t worry–restricted panels also count as free spaces toward that end.)

The other effect is Components Inverted, which allows you to flip components horizontally. Such a feature wasn't present in L&S, but also wouldn't have mattered anyway–I didn't have to think about chaining starred components back then.

As an aside, while this contest is running, I can only synthesize with Sophie; for some time, I’ll be shut out of all of Plachta’s recipes.

Sophie, Slob

Huh? Is it really that messy? I just put a few things down on the floor.

If it is only a few things, perhaps you should make an effort to clean up after your–

Yo, Sophie! Plachta! I brought ya somethin’ g–

I-it’s not that messy! You two are totally overreacting …

Ah, I can’t stand this! Outta the way! Just seein’ messy rooms drives me nuts!

Incredible … I did not know you had such skills …

Heheh … Do ya always make such a mess? You’d think you’d always be steppin’ on stuff.

Ehehe … I’ve always left the cleaning to my friends … I mean, was it really that bad?

Don’t get other folk to clean up your mess! You ain’t a baby, y’know!

Ahhh! I’m sorry!

Tch … You really mean it?

Ngh … that was scary … I didn’t think he could get so angry.

I personally found him an exceptional help. I do hope he comes by more frequently … Although, I wonder … what brought him here in the first place?

Sophie’s slovenliness must have made him forget. Moving onto something I’D like to forget…

Why am I putting one of my Red Neutralizers with Certain Critical into a Pure Water? Because once it goes into Pure Water, it can be used in another neutralizer or in Zettel, a Fuel item that in turn goes back into Pure Water. (If I max Yellow on Red Neutralizer, it counts as Fuel too.)

This way, I can get my best quality-boosting traits and Certain Critical onto one item, which, Super Success RNG willing, I can then use to loop indefinitely to raise quality to 999. With a Pure Water that has 999 quality, it can be used in a Neutralizer for a super good bomb. Unfortunately, I failed to hit 999. All the other ingredients needed in the fuels/Pure Water kept dragging the quality of the end products down. Hell, I think that Zettel was the highest quality I got with Certain Critical on it–a shameful display :negative: Shameful! So let’s bounce and see some character arcs.

New Job

Hi, Diebold! Is something wrong?

Ah, Sophie … I am faced with a most troublesome situation. I have been attempting to rouse Pirka for some time, but she refuses to awaken.

Huh? Come on, wake up, Pirka! Oh look, someone with lots of Cole is here!

Zzz … Zzz …

I have known few people to sleep quite this deeply. It is a little worrisome.

… Let’s keep an eye on her for a bit.

Pirka!

Hmm? Sophie … and Diebold, too? Welcome to my humble shop! What’d you like?

I’m so glad you’re awake … We were really worried, you know?

Worried?

We attempted to rouse you for several hours, yet you only awoke just now.

only in this franchise could you get an expletive like “what the barrels?!” :allears:

Are you feeling okay?

Yeah, I’m fine … Although maybe I shouldn’t have duplicated until so late last night.

Ah, sleep deprivation … I am glad you are safe, but you must take better care of yourself.

Ahaha! Of course, good sir! I’ll be more careful next time.

(She said there are no side effects to her duplication ability, but … There’s no way that’s a coincidence … )
Well, let’s hope Pirka finds some recourse before she works herself to death. Moving on…

I’ll need this book for the materials to upgrade my sickle and pickaxe. Unfortunately, I also need Alchemic Clay, which I can’t synthesize yet, so I have to put that on the burner for now.

We can dispense with greetings, I presume?

Certainly. We may be from different times, but we are still one and the same. More importantly … you know what I wish to ask, don’t you?

Yes. Could you please tell me?

I could tell you a part of the story if you would like.

Just a part of it? You won’t tell me all of it?

… I do not know. I am not certain it would be for the best to tell you the entire story at this moment in time. I have lived through far, far more than you could possibly imagine. Many of the memories I have are painful and difficult to recount … I am afraid I do not yet know whether it would be wise to share those memories with my past self.

I understand. You can tell me as much as you are comfortable with. If my future self decides to omit parts of the story, then I should trust that decision. I am sorry for rushing you … I will wait for when the time is right.

… I appreciate it. However, I can tell you that I adopted my doll form after I lost my memories and became a book.

Sophie 1’s full title is Alchemist of the Mysterious Book, after all!

Yes. In order to restore my memories, I thought I should at least make my form as close to human as possible … Sophie and many others helped me obtain this vessel and get my memories back.

I see … A book, without memories …

I apologize. That must come as quite a shock.

No, not at all. Learning that souls can be transferred not only into dolls, but books too … Mightily curious indeed. I feel like I have learned about a whole new facet of alchemy.

I see … There is no mistaking it, you truly are my past self.

Oh, this? It’s a registry of all of Erde Wiege’s inhabitants, past and present.

Wait, you mean … everyone who’s ever lived here?!

Absolutely. There’d be trouble if we weren’t keeping track, you know? Take, for example, if everyone thought that someone had gone home, but they were actually missing.

I’d never even thought about that …

Besides, it’s what I do best.

You prefer it to running a tavern? I would’ve thought keeping records would be even more work.

Like I said before, I’ve got a soft spot for this kind of thing. It used to be my career, actually.

You mean, you were a historian?

Hmm, something like that, but not quite. Do you know what the Observation Institute is?

… The obser-what now? I’ve never heard of it.
That’s a location that shows up in Firis, which takes place after Sophie 2 chronologically.

Ah, figures. It wouldn’t have been of much interest to anyone who wasn’t a scholar. The Institute is a historical archive of sorts. Well, I say “historical,” but it also collected material on monsters, geography, ancient literature … you name it.

Kati’s given age is 26 and Anne, the person in her position during Firis, is 29. I for one would not want to be in charge of “what if Wikipedia, but without the internet or any IT infrastructure to make it even remotely workable” ever, let alone at that age.

I’m not too sure what that means, but it sounds like you … were a super important person?

I don’t know if it was as illustrious as all that, but … It’s held in high enough regard, likely due to the obscene number of documents that need managing.
Again, checks out with Anne.

Whaaaaat?! That’s incredible!

Heh. Still, the workload matches the prestige. I barely had time to breathe. Compared to my work at the Institute, keeping citizen records here is child’s play. You can’t judge a book by its cover, eh? Anyway, since you’re here, let me get you some tea.

Hey, Sophie? Plachta was kind of angry.

Huh? Why?

She says the mess that’s been piling up in the atelier since you saved the other Plachta is giving her a headache.

Ohh … Ahaha … ha … Yeah, she’s probably mad about that …

Is it that bad?

Ahaha … Yeah … My friends used to complain about my messiness too. I’m really bad at cleaning, so my atelier back home always looked like a storm just blew through it. My friend Monika used to come by every couple of days to help straighten the place up …

… I’m surprised.

Ahaha … Have I disappointed you?

What?! No way!

I didn’t mess up my atelier as much as you do, mind you, but I did leave it looking like a bit of a pigsty. Every couple of weeks or so, a friend would drop by to help me tidy the place up.

Whaaat? That’s just like me!

Hahaha. I have the bad habit of leaving my alchemy tools and books out after using them.

Same! Like if I’m going to use it again right away, leaving it by the cauldron is so much easier.

I do that a lot, too! It saves more time and effort than putting it away.

Haha, you’re the first person who really gets me on this.

Great minds think alike, huh?!

Sophie being a slob is a punchline throughout the OG Mysterious trilogy. Sophie 2 introduces (much to Plachta’s consternation) the question: is Sophie messy by nature or by nurture?

Plachta?! How long have you been there?

Oh, no need to worry about me. Please … do continue with your merry conversation.

Sorry for making the place a mess …

We won’t do it again …

Goodness … You two never stop causing trouble …

It was a very long time ago.

Long time my rear end. You showed up here way after I did.

How long have you been here for, Olias?

Long enough to have already been Roytale’s number one super bodyguard when Diebold here turned up! No one could match me, so I got all the bodyguard requests. Coulda died of overwork!

A “super bodyguard” …?

I have never heard of it. Is that a new career you are pursuing?

Point is, when Mr. Ex-Knight first got here, I asked him to join me. Took a lot off my plate, lemme tell you. Dunno where I’d be without him.

It is I who should be thanking you, for taking in a man still overwhelmed by his new surroundings. I will never forget your kindness … Simply recalling it summons anew my feelings of gratitude.

Gah, I told you right at the beginnin’ that I don’t like that kinda stuff! “Sir” just don’t sit right with me. Call me Olias or nothin’ at all!

Hm … If you say so, sir.

What did I JUST …?! This guy’s a lost cause …

Hehe, you two are such good friends.

Given how straitlaced Diebold is, one could be forgiven for thinking he’s ribbing his good pal Olias in his own way there. Moving on!

Are there really that many?

It is more that they each need to be handled individually. Some aid would not go amiss. Someone with experience in building restoration, for instance. Another for the agricultural aspects. Alas, those here were not gathered with infrastructure in mind, so true experts are rare. Now, what next …?

It’s a tough job to do, especially if you’re not used to it. Why are you acting as the mayor, anyway?

I owe quite a lot to the people in this world. They went to such great lengths to aid me. So, if I can do something to make Roytale’s citizens’ lives easier, then I shall do it. Simply put, I am returning the favor.

Ahaha … I mean, I really wish we could spend a little more time together.

Well, there is little time to relax, yet perhaps this is for the best. I am certain that all these experiences, and the people you meet, will help you grow even more. That is what I believe.

Sophie, Sensei

Yeah, I know … No such thing as a free meal, and whatever …

Hm, it sounds like they might be talking about work …

Huh? Oh, hey there, Sophie. What can I get for you?

Nothing special. I was just in the area, so I thought I’d drop by. Chatting about money again?

Of course! That’s our livelihood!

Hey! I don’t screw up that often!

Oh … Guess I’m just gonna have to stick to the usual stuff for a while.

Hold up. Wouldn’t the successful alchemy stuff fetch a way higher price?

Sure, but then I’d have to pay to get the goods in the first place, right?

… W-well, it’s not like I can just give you the good items for free … Alchemy is my job, after all.

In that case, how about you learn some alchemy yourself, Alette? That way, the sky’s the limit.

If I was an alchemist, I could just make things myself, and then sell whatever I wanted!

Exactly! And since you can pass on all your mistakes to me, it’s a win-win kinda deal.

Huh? But Pirka, you wouldn’t be doing any of the work …

Yeah!

Whaaat?! I-I can’t do that! I mean, I’m still getting lessons from Plachta myself …
not like that’ll stop her from taking Firis on as her apprentice after this game’s over with :ssh:

Aw, don’t be like that! C’mon, please! Pretty please!

A-alright, alright! I’ll show you something simple the next time you come to the atelier.

While we’re back in the atelier…

Let’s combine Red and Green Surge in a White Neutralizer; the traits merge into Yellow Rhythm. With my Limitia, I can not only hit the top effect thresholds, but have the real estate to max out ALL the effects to boot; it’s truly a liberating feeling :toot:

Now, let’s put my Yellow Rhythm!White Neutralizer into a Flame Emperor Dust with a Blue Surge!Yellow Neutralizer. These traits combine into…

Pure White Resonance, a 5* trait! Since Flame Emperor Dust counts as Gunpowder, I can loop it back to Red Neutralizer, and thus into Refresh Oil, and into Pure Water, and into another neutralizer and into Pure Water and Refresh Oil, which can ALSO be used in Polish, which counts as Sand and can go into a Yellow Neutralizer, which can go into–you get the picture. Pretty much all my intermediate syntheses will be something from this loop.

Whoa! A-Alette?

I’m here for my lesson! You said you’d teach me alchemy, remember?

Ahaha … Right. I just wasn’t expecting you to come racing in here like that … But, I guess that just goes to show how much you’ve been looking forward to it. Okay, how about we get started?

Yes, please!

*Cough* *Cough* … Ooh, that didn’t work out …

Sophie, what gives?! You never said alchemy would be this hard!

Sure, it’s not the easiest thing in the world, but … you just might not have the knack for it. Alchemy’s kind of special that way … You have to be born with a natural talent for it.

… A natural talent?

Alright, this alchemy plan’s a bust!

Huh?! But, you were so interested in it. You’re already giving up? Just like that?

Well, no talent means no chance of success, right? If something’s not pulling a profit, you’ve gotta switch things up. Quick thinking’s the name of the merchant game!

Oh … I see …

However, they are mistaken. In my experience, they make for most excellent weapons.

But why pay for it in the first place? Didn’t that cost a fortune?

In my previous profession our equipment expenses were covered, so … *Chuckle* Anyway …

Never seen him in action before? He could talk the hoops off a barrel about weaponry. Once he gets going, there’s no stopping him. He’s probably forgotten we’re even here.

So he’s like a weapons expert? I bet he’s seen and tried out lots of different kinds.

He used to lead an order of knights, so he had to be knowledgeable in such things.

Yeah, that’s– Wait, what? Diebold used to lead his own order?!

He sure did. You didn’t know?

Whaaat?! I never knew he was that big of a deal! But why would someone like that quit being a knight to become a bodyguard instead?

Wow, would you look at the time! I gotta skedaddle! Good luck, Sophie! Bye now!

There she goes … What was that all about?

I am merely trying to say, what would remain if one subtracted all the artistic elements from– Hm?

Gosh, I get what Pirka means now!

Anyway, offscreen, I crafted Fire Seeds with Certain Critical and Trait Gatherer S and stuck it in the greenhouse.

Certain Critical is a 5* trait, so my haul was good, but didn’t have any of the endgame traits I wanted.

So let’s try that again! I’ll put a PWR!Pure Water into a Zettel and go for broke with Fire components…

…because doing so produced a Zettel with a 5-panel Light component that let me hit the threshold for Trait Harvester XL on this take. This wouldn’t have been possible without catalysts, as I couldn’t have hit the threshold for that light component or advanced to an effect threshold beyond Trait Harvester L on Fire Seeds without one.

Yields–what items I get, how many I get, and what traits are on them–are seeded the moment I plant, so if I’m going to save scum to get what I want, I’ll have to save right before this. After planting this PWR!Fire Seeds and waiting 5 days…

I got a good deal of the traits I was looking for, but not everything. Let’s plant the other seeds…

:unsmigghh: Awakening is a trait that upgrades other top-end equipment traits and it’s the one that I’d have otherwise had to wait until the final dungeon to gather conventionally. All for One and Inner Ambition were also top priority for me because they let me upgrade Trusty Leader to its final stage.

Inner Ambition is on the Sand Bamboo, which counts as Gunpowder and can be used in Red Neutralizer. Let’s make that and add a Trusty Leader!Pure Water to the mix…

And the two traits merged into Benevolent Ruler! But we’re not done yet.

I want Awakening in my greater trait pool and to loop my All for One in to what I’ve been crafting. To this end, I start by making Polish, and in doing so, I have to be VERY careful that Awakening doesn’t prematurely merge with another trait.

Like this. Bad! Let’s hit B and make sure there’s no other traits in the pool that will merge with Awakening.

In hindsight I should have put Transcendent Mastery–the Awakening equivalent for top-end buff and debuff traits–on too for this one, but I have another ingredient with that trait in the wings; it won’t be lost to me forever despite this decision. Now that we have 4 Polish with Awakening, let’s see the trait in action.

Awakening merged with Supercharge All Stats into All-Stat Power, an endgame trait that can go onto all my equipment–weapons, armors, accessories, and talismans. And since I have many more Polish, Yellow Neutralizer, etc. with Awakening, I can use them later on to get my desired endgame armor trait loadout for when the next tier of cloth comes online.

Eventually, I merge Benevolent Ruler and All for One to make Tyrant King. These stat boosts are nuts, especially at this point in the game, even if Tyrant King can only go on weapons.

Now let’s combine Skillful Attack with Awakening.

Between Tyrant King, Persistent Attack and All-Stat Power, that’s all three traits I want on my endgame weapons–all by the midgame-ish point! And since the top-tier ingots require fuel, I can use this Refresh Oil in their syntheses and focus all my attention on getting the colored components I want from the rest of the ingredients.

Now let’s revisit Pure White Resonance; it wasn’t a trait I wanted just for greenhouse abuse. Its description says it merges with a Decline or Prosperity trait. Let’s first make the latter by merging Sharp Mind and Familiar Presence.

Familiar Presence was on an Animal Material. Note that Golden Threads are your ticket to get traits from Animal Materials into Pure Water, and from there, the neutralizer/fuel loop.

With this, I have obtained the single best buff trait in the game. But that’s not all PWR is good for!

Invisible Illness and Empty Anxiety will merge into Dark Decline, which automatically gets combined with PWR into…

Pure White Corrosion, the best debuff trait in the game!

Might as well put my super Polish to use right now, right? And I can really hit a high effect level and get better components and +DEF effects on this Gold Eisen with my catalyst. Let’s make a talisman with it.

Talismans are the fourth slot on the equipment screen, below weapons, armor, and non-talisman accessories. Since the Scorching Talisman requires some metal, I can use this Gold Eisen in it.

Of all the talismans available right now, I want the Scorching Talisman because it really bolsters my offensive firepower between the skill power boost and the attack boost.

Of all the traits on that Gold Eisen, only All-Stat Power could go on the end product. But that’s fine; these are perfectly acceptable and rather :eyepop: stat boosts for the time being. Eventually, I’ll make talismans and other accessories that have All-Stat Power and two other great traits on them.

Case in point! But why not share the love?

Let’s do this rank up quest so we can get better quests and more Cole from Kati and finance our duplication and restocking needs. The Cavern Keeper is in Erk’s Ice Caves…

Cavern Keeper

:toot:

Lucky for me, this talisman is fairly cheap to duplicate; I can give it and its stat boosts to the rest of the party!

Anyway, there’s still the contest with Plachta outstanding, and I can’t fit that, the other character events, and the rest of the Pure White trait syntheses in this update because I’d run way over the character limit. (to be continued)

Part 9: Dreams and Purpose (II)

(cont.)

Last update, Sophie was considering learning quick thinking from Alette. Let’s start this part with her.

Sophie, Fired

Yep. Please teach me everything you know, Master Alette!

M-master, huh? … Heheh … A wise choice. You’ve come to the right girl! I’m gonna teach you all you need to know to make it as a proper business woman!

But you do know I’m not actually planning on becoming one …

Well, in any case, before we can get into thinking on your feet, first I gotta see how you handle a sale. Why don’t we start by having you serve the next customer who drops in?

Sure, no problem!

Yep! So, how can I help you today?

Alas, the hammer I use for smithing is not the mighty tool it once was. I am looking for a sturdy successor. Yet, my coin purse is a little light … Perhaps I should settle with a less costly option …

Ah, gotcha. In that case, I’ll give it to you half off!

So, how was that? Wasn’t offering that discount a clever decision? Using the wholesale price, and considering the material and quality, I worked out how low I could go while still making a profit!

… Yeah, you did manage to make a profit. But, recklessly slashing the price and shrinking our profit down to the bare minimum doesn’t a merchant make!

Whaaaat?! But I managed to make you a little money …

Well, fired means fired, so we’ll have to skedaddle!

Hello, Diebold. What are you up to today?

I am departing town to make my rounds, lest some stray monsters wander into our midst.

I see … Guards also need to do things like that …

This is not strictly part of my duties. It is more of a personal pursuit.

Indeed. And although I receive no remuneration for it … protecting the peaceful lives of the townsfolk here is the greatest reward of all. Even the weakest monster could bring great harm to a child or an elder.

Hehe.

Hm? Have I said something odd?

No, not at all! I was just thinking that this must be what you were like as a knight.

Titles are easy to abandon. Old habits, not so much.

Can’t you go back to being a knight? I mean, you’re the very image of one right now.

Or do you … not want to be one again?

I threw it all away when Is old my symbol of office, my shield …

Huh …?

Did I hit a sore spot …?

… Anyway, that’s the long and short of it. Could you help me out with that?

Hm … Gathering materials is simple, but I am not confident I can properly identify what you need.

A Former Life

Hello! Did I hear someone say “gathering materials”?

Yeah, I just sold my last batch and was asking Diebold to go grab some more for me.

Alas, I am not very familiar with such things. I fear I may return with the incorrect type.

Oh, I could help! I’ve got a knack for gathering materials.

Are you sure? I’d really appreciate it. Are you good with that, Diebold?

I would also appreciate such a wise eye. Thank you for offering, Sophie.

Leave it to me!

Now, I’d like you to get me some Jellyfish Larvae. Thanks, guys! Off you go!

I already have plenty of those from killing Extinct Ancients to unlock Alette’s Spy’s Footfalls, so no need to go in the field.

Yep, these are just what I needed! Thanks a bunch!

I must apologize. My talent for identifying correct items has proven to be as poor as I feared.

I wouldn’t have been able to fend those monsters off by myself, though!

True, Diebold WAS in the party when I fought the jellyfish that dropped all that.

I was only able to do the gathering because you were there to protect me. And you were so cool out there! No wonder you were a commander.

That was man from another time. I am simply a guard now.

Why did you quit, though? You must have worked really hard for it.

As my nation was under constant threat from monsters, it considered its knights indispensable. However, during my time as commander, we were able to subjugate our foes and bring about peace.

That’s amazing! You really saved your country!

However, once the monsters were no more, much of the military was considered … superfluous.

How could they treat you like that? After you fought so hard to protect everyone …

The fault lies with me, too. I was too blind to see whom I really needed to protect …

Now, there’s a contest outstanding. I only need to make a Breezy Aroma with 80 quality, but it’ll be very trivial to clear that bar.

All three traits I want are in these two Refresh Oils. Pure White Glory provides across the board buffs to ATK, DEF and SPD, as well as three other random buffs; Awakening Heal revives anyone who’s been KO’d and restores an additional 20% of HP, and Terrific Healing boosts healing power by 25%.

My goal for this synthesis was to hit 25 Ice, the threshold for Activate Scatter, and then prioritize Wind for MP recovery. I did neither, instead just hitting Activate Split. What Split/Scatter does is generate a time card when I use Breezy Aroma to buff and heal everyone. Later during the battle, the time card triggers and everyone gets buffed and healed. Activate Split generates a time card that does this just once while Activate Scatter generates one that does this twice.

Outcome

This Breezy Aroma is great for the time being, but I’ll definitely need to revisit it later. Not just because I missed my target effect thresholds, but also because there are still stronger revival and healing traits I want to replace Awakening Heal and Terrific Healing with.

Alright. The winner of the catalyst challenge is …

Huh!

Whoa, really?!

Indeed. You made something of great quality. I’m not playing favorites here. Plachta … Any objections?

None … Your judgment was correct. Even I can see clear as day that Sophie’s skills are superior to mine … I am completely ashamed of myself …

Plachta …

Ngh …!

Stay here. It’ll only make matters worse if you go after her.
She’s right; Sophie might be the nicest person in the world, but no matter what she says at this juncture, she’d only hurt Plachta’s feelings further.

B-but …

I’ll talk to her. It’ll be okay, trust me.

She’s gone … Does Plachta hate me?
(Speaking of Plachta, I wonder if the mayor is doing alright … It would be good to talk with her about this too … I guess I’ll go and check in on her.)

We have no choice but to do so, as Sophie will not leave Roytale town limits while Plachta the Young has run off. So let’s go to the Crystal Sparkle Pavilion.

Music: Giving Dreams Shape (From “Dreams of a Book”)

(Ah, she’s here … It looks like she’s pretty busy. Maybe I should leave her to it … )

Why are you standing there, Sophie? Please, do come in.

Huh?!

Your presence is very distinct. I can always sense when you are nearby.

Oh, haha … Anyway, what are you up to?

I am looking through a collection of files regarding Roytale.

Speaking of Roytale, it’s a pretty big town, but it doesn’t have a lot of people for its size, huh?

That is hardly surprising.

Personally … Looking at it that way, I guess it’s actually a lot.

It is my mission to make it even just a little easier for the townspeople to accomplish their dreams in this place … However, in order to do that, there is a mountain of tasks awaiting me.

Sounds like a tough job … Let me know if there’s ever anything I can help with.

Now, that is enough about me. Sophie, was there something you wished to speak to me about?

Huh?! Ahaha … You really can read me like a book. Here’s the thing. I had an alchemy showdown with Plachta, but …

Yeah … But then Plachta suddenly ran out of the atelier …

Goodness, she is terribly immature … Only a fool runs away after a loss.

I tried to go after her, but Ramizel said she’d go instead. Do you think that was the right move?

Yes … I would say so. In the past I was … very prideful. I was moody and hated to lose … Allow me to apologize on behalf of my past self for making you so anxious …

No, it’s alright.

Anyway, would you like to talk for a while? Since you came all the way here to see me.

Yes! Gee, there’s so much I want to tell you …

And hey, I’m sure Mayor Plachta enjoys the break.

Oh, yeah … The other Plachta’s probably back by now …

Yes … I do hope so. I could be unreasonably stubborn at that age …

Ahaha … I’m sure it’ll be fine.

Um, Plachta …? Can I come by for another chat sometime?

Of course, Sophie. There is no need for undue restraint. You did call us family, remember?

Yeah … Okay, I’ll drop in again soon. Good luck with everything!

You’re pretty upset about losing to Sophie, huh?

I … believed I could win. I was so certain that I had grown somewhat thanks to the recent events. And yet … I was still unable to beat Sophie. I still lost to her. I … am surely missing something of vital importance.

Really? I think you’ve got everything you need.

But I remain unable to beat Sophie! Besides, that item she made to transport souls … I don’t think I would be able to do the same.

You can probably figure out what’s going on with Plachta the Young: after the events of the game up to this point, she knows that someday, somehow, she will become the mentor of the great alchemist Sophie, and it’s getting to her head. In her eye, she has to surpass Sophie NOW, even though that’s clearly not going to happen anytime soon. Not storywise and not in alchemy level. And that’s been eating away at her.

Hey, there’s something I want to ask you. Is it really that important for you to beat Sophie at alchemy?

What …?

My alchemy is nothing but a drop in the ocean compared to the two of you.

Dreams …?

That’s right. I mean, most alchemists dream of doing something with their alchemy, right? Those dreams don’t just disappear because we may be inferior to someone. I’m sure it’s the same for you, right?

So in a way, Ramizel’s the perfect person to give Plachta this talk. She’s completely at peace with being worse at alchemy than Sophie and Plachta. Still, she knows the purpose to her power. That not only animates her as a person, but lets her spot out those who’ve lost sight of their purpose.

Lost sight of things …?

Yes … Those important thoughts that have always been inside of you …

Please tell me. Just what are they?!

Sorry, but I can’t. I don’t know what they are. Besides, there’s no point unless you uncover them for yourself, through your own experiences.

I have to … uncover them myself?

Hehe … it might all feel very uncertain, but you’ll be okay. I know you can do it. You have what it takes. I believe in you.

Oh, no, you will. As long as I’m with you, I’ll make sure you do.

Hehe … It seems I have found another person besides Sophie whom I must surpass.

Well, that’s all resolved :unsmith: And Plachta’s ready to go back to the atelier now.

Phew, thank goodness the mayor’s here. I haven’t been able to relax like this in such a long time.

You were doing all the mayoral work before Plachta came along, right?

Pretty much. I wasn’t very good at running a tight ship like a real mayor should, though.

So, you’re not good at that kind of stuff?

Ahaha. Yep, you got it. I’m not exactly the most thorough person in the world. That’s why I’m really glad you’re all here to help me out. How long do you plan to stay here for?

Hmm … Until Plachta’s satisfied … I guess. Elvira said we don’t have to worry about time passing in the real world since time flows differently here.

Ah, nothing!

You two! Do you not think you are both getting a little too comfortable in your laziness?

But it’s been so long since I’ve been able to just relax and do nothing …

I’ve been working non-stop since coming here. It’s so nice to finally have some me time.

What me time? Ramizel, you still have requests you must attend to, no? And, according to my future self, Sophie must train for her license examination. Hurry up now, no more lazing about. Get back to work!

She’s bounced back a bit too well …

Yeah. It’s like we have two mayor Plachtas now …

Excuse my intrusion!

Oh, Gnome? What brings you here in such a hurry?

I do apologize for barging in, but I have a message. The mayor wishes to see you all at once.

Plachta wants to see us right now?

It’s probably something major if she wants to see us so urgently …

Understood. Let us all go at once.

Thank you!

Despite the tone there, the game immediately segued into another cutscene at the atelier. One with the whole party…

It seems like the monsters we fight get stronger and stronger the further we get from Roytale …

Makes sense, doesn’t it? The further you are from town, the fewer people you get passing through.

Which is great … if you’re a monster. Fewer unwelcome visitors, better survival rates.

That’s true. So, knowing that, is there anything that we could do to be better prepared?

Like what?

Well …

Heh. Ain’t it obvious?

By “everyone,” do you mean … All six of us at once?!

I don’t see how that could be a good idea. It’s nothing short of reckless.

Hm … Actually, his plan isn’t without its merits. Certainly, coordinating six people to attack in sync would be next to impossible …

That makes sense. You know, this just might work.

Y-you really think we could pull it off?

I don’t see why not. Right, let’s talk battle tactics!

Well, that’s all we can do for now. All that’s left is to try it out in the field.

Don’t worry, Sophie. Remember, I’ll be there to help.

Hah! You just be careful you don’t trip over your own feet.

If all goes well, we should be able to create a litany of different combos in due time. We ought to keep that in mind as we hone our skills.

So this is Sophie 2’s rendition of ultimate attacks. Duel Triggers run off a gauge that, mercifully and unlike in L&S, carries over between battles and thus are actually practical to trigger.

You could tell from the dialogue, but we start with three Dual Triggers. The game doesn’t make any effort to hide which pairs get the ones to come and they’ll trickle in as we continue with the party members’ character arcs.

Anyway, before we heed Mayor Plachta’s call, there’s something else I want to make.

With Plachta back at the cauldron, I’ll start by putting my Pure White Corrosion!Red Neutralizer into a Klavier Band.

This is to the end of crafting an Ennui Mirror, which can now be made into a great debuffer with catalysts. I’ll want to hit 20 Wind for that, and I might have trouble getting enough Wind links and components to do so.

What will help me immensely to this end is using Major Gathering to get Silver Crystals with Wind components at Erk’s Ice Caves; normally, Silver Crystals can’t have green components. Now for the actual synthesis:

It seems I don’t have the links needed to increase the max effect level and max out Wind, or even enough remaining Wind components, right? Well, with the Limitia I synthesized…

I can do THAT to increase my Wind links without blanking any of my previously-placed Wind components, and using Link Morph on that Ice panel provided the extra push needed to increase my Wind max effect level, max out Wind and hit the threshold for Tri-Suffer. The other effects don’t particularly matter, but here’s the end product:

Even if Plachta may not be the better alchemist, she’s the only one who can make this Ennui Mirror. That counts for something! I got Final Grudge by merging Transcendent Mastery with Inflict Grudge; I wanted that one specifically to soften enemy resistances and even inflict weaknesses on them. The traits and Tri-Suffer speak for themselves: this will inflict a veritable litany of debuffs and status effects on the enemy. Each individual debuff and status effect will also deplete enemy aura.

…each individual debuff and status effect will also deplete enemy aura…

…Let’s test that proposition next update!

POWERFUL FUNGAL LORD

Ohhh, that's how you get Dark Decline. I got its counterpart completely by accident and assumed they were both drop-only.

Catalysts are good. Dual attacks are good. Good game.
