For my last 4 or so iPhones I’ve bought SB whatever ~$10 clear soft practice case I could get on Amazon and have had no complaints.

One yellowed one time but I figured buying another one seemed justified.

Yeah I guess I don’t know what people expect to consider this a big release, new body? They’ve upped all the spec, changed the screen (a big deal), and dramatically changed the UI around it. There’s just not much more for them to do outside of really gimmicky sensor / AR stuff and imo next year will be more of a S year as they might focus on getting the dynamic island to non pro models.

I wonder if the Island will stick around or if it’s just a gimmicky stopgap until whatever redesign they got planned for the big 15.

Honestly I think it’s wild to think the island would only be around for a year, or that the tech that would replace it is easily available. Really temper your expectations for the 15.

Is there a precedent at all of Apple publicly releasing something that third party devs can hook into and killing it after a year?

The only thing that fits that bill somewhat would be the MacBook touchbar?

Yeah I had the same situation where I busted the screen on my iPhone out of warranty and she marked it as some defect they were reporting that had a $0 cost to repair when the reality was I dropped a dumbbell on it.

I'm considering getting an iPhone for the first time to give it a go. The biggest thing stopping me from switching is that I cannot text from my computer because iMessages seems to only have a mac client, and I'm too heavily invested in the windows world to switch. I'm in front of a computer a lot of the day and I love being able to use google messages and whatsapp on my browser instead of having to pick up my phone all the time.

Knowing that, and the annoyance that it's not USB-C and I'd have to re-buy some apps, are there other things that I'd be missing leaving android that I may not be considering?

I'm also considering a pixel 7 or pixel 7 pro, I have a pixel 4a currently.

The carriers are also working with a third party for those international services so the margins may not be as lofty as it might seem. I actually know someone that was the product owner for launching that feature with a carrier and now I wish I paid more attention to the financials.

We went to France in 2019 and used one of those eSim broker sites and god drat was it easy and we got like a week of 2gb for $5 which we only needed for google maps. I think getting a travel Sim with Orange would have been ~$30 for less data. (Could be wrong, fuzzy memory)

Even plugging a phone in at night is icky to me now. Get a wireless cradle on your nightstand and plop it down and don't even think about these things. The only place I still use a wired charger is on my couch in my living room and I have to use wired carplay but I only use carplay for trips where I need Waze.

The Dave

Well first they should be able to tell a specific error with the IMEI number. If it's incompatible technology, or still showing as unlocked, they should get separate error codes for those.

Tell whoever the account owner is to call into support and ask to escalate the issue to a specialist that has network tools. No one in retail will be able to solve that and no tier 1 agent is likely to be able to solve it.

I don't know if you've already checked this or if it tells specific errors to customers but you can check compatibility on Xfinity's website: https://www.xfinity.com/mobile/byod/compatibility/device?INTCMP=ILC:byod_get-started

Your account doesn't have 4 lines then right?

The Dave
Sep 9, 2003

So (I'm an XM customer and am very familiar with their service) what device is tied to her line then? Is it her actual IMEI and there were soft errors that it was locked at the time of purchase?

Is there any chance there is some lag in the IMEI being reported as unlocked? Does your ATT bill need to do some processing? If the IMEI on her Xfinity line is correct, what happens when you try to do self-service activation through the website?

If none of that seems to lead to a good path then again, call into care.

The Dave
Sep 9, 2003

Sounds like you're also dealing with a bit of a game of telephone here. There is a device tied to the line, period, there is no way to check-out a line without one. If you log into the account through the website or the app you will see a device on your sister's line and you will be prompted to activate it, otherwise they hit the error when originally signing up and only added the 3 lines to your account.

The Dave
Sep 9, 2003

Oof that is beyond my knowledge but sounds a little frightening. So is there a random IMEI using her phone number? Does her old phone on ATT work at all? (I would assume not if a port went through.) What happens when you call her number?

Definitely something that is only solveable by a high-tier agent or a cellular network specific specialist. You can try engaging through the app on Xfinity's website but it can often take up a lot of time.

Could you add a second international esim when traveling? When I went to France ~4 years ago “picking up” a 5 day esim through a broker website was so much more affordable than going to one of the big carriers for a plan.

The Dave
Sep 9, 2003

I’m pretty sure the US was late to the esim game compared to the rest of the world, but you can easily do some googling to find out what will be available wherever you’re going. It’s a million times more convenient and likely cheaper than the old physical SIM paradigm.

ATT won’t unlock your phone until it’s paid off. Once it’s paid off they legally have to unlock it (but they won’t usually Auto Unlock it because lol it’s ATT).

It’s also worth calling in and seeing if the carrier had any leeway or you catch an agent on a good day. I’ve heard of people at some carriers only needing to pay a few months to unlock or just calling and saying they are doing international travel and the agent saying sure.

Though I know some places don’t let the tier 1 service have access to unlocking so it might need to be escalated. Like all mobile poo poo it’s widely YMMV.

Edit: though in my quickest of googling it seems ATT is particularly rigid in this instance.

The advice should always be "Don't mix personal and work phone data" and admittedly I don't follow it. I work for a large corp and we can get new devices every 2 years, but mine is Galaxy something (I went that route so I could experience iOS and android OSes) and I gave it to my son as a play phone 2 years ago and have no idea where it is.

On my personal iPhone I use work Microsoft apps and slack /shrug

The Dave

I never cracked a screen but have a cracked camera lens in my 14 pro because the dumb lenses stick out so far and the edge must have hit something when either me or one my kids dropped it.

I honestly had no idea until my .5x zoom disappeared from the UI and then I started getting warnings in settings that I had defective or unauthorized camera parts. I can’t remember what Apple charged me to fix it, like 100-200, but they only repaired parts behind the sapphire and the crack is still there.

It was at the Apple store in Center City Philadelphia, and the fix took at-most 90 minutes, from the time of the device leaving and getting back into my hands. I imagine it's a common job for them.
