Dad and I have been watching Fringe lately! I've watched up to season 4 of The X-Files and it has a very similar vibe in terms of 'monster of the week'-type stuff, but I find I'm actually enjoying it a lot more than X-Files-- the setup for a larger arc feels more clean and prominent here-- but that may be because I've already read a tiny bit about the alternate dimension stuff. I don't know why, but I love love love Olivia Dunham as a character. Her voice is nice lol. Walter is also a joy. Apparently my parents watched it together when it was first coming out, and it was 'their' show, so it's nice sharing a part of that with my dad. I don't remember if I've already mentioned it ITT, but we've also been watching the new Quantum Leap, and I enjoy it immensely. Never watched the original, so my dad has had to fill me in a bit, but I think it's pretty strong all things considered. "What I wouldn't give to return to those halcyon days." |

I'm still kinda pissed because I deliberately got All of lupin the 3rd on my Plex... like... hundreds of gigabytes of it... for a friend I know who loves the show, but he's ghosted me since he moved to London so it was basically a wasted effort as far as I can tell.

I haven't been able to do much except lay in bed and watch TV for a lot of the last month, some things I've watched: The Sandman - it was good, pretty accurate to the comic as far as I remember. I don't like Morpheus but also I don't think he could have been played any better? Like, I guess Robert Smith was channeling the king of dreams all along, you know? Good visuals and it's a neat story if you like Neil Gaiman urban fantasy stuff Guillermo Del Toro's The Cabinet of Curiosities - it's a "horror" anthology on Netflix, each one by a different director. I would say they are "horror" in the same way that e.g. Hellboy is "horror" and a lot of the tropes were very predictable but!! What I liked about this series was specifically that it's all centered around cosmic horror. Not Lovecraftian cosmic horror, just cosmic horror. All 3 Riddick movies back to back - Riddick is like the dumbest, goofiest antihero ever and it's incredibly hard to take the character seriously but there's a lot of neat world building, I would really love more out of the setting preferably not directly involving Riddick because it's also very clear that they had no idea where the character was headed as they wrote each movie. All 3 John Wick movies back to back - they were fun and everything but there's an incredibly strong undercurrent in literal infantilism throughout them that stood out as bizarre to me. It's like, you know that game that kids play while riding in a car where they imagine there's a little ninja man running alongside the car? It's sort of like John Wick is intended to be a manifestation of that, there's a lot of really overt symbolism to childhood like a large part of the series being about contention for the "Highchair" and this entire society of assassins which is cartoonishly dedicated to schoolyard rules, and john wick himself having dialog that consists almost entirely of something exactly like a baby babbling back at its parents. Anyway I think it was interesting to watch under this pretense as a sort of social commentary but it just feels weird that no one talks about that aspect of it. House of the Dragon - it was pretty middling I thought, it felt like fairly generic fantasy fare We Own This City - was very good I thought Todd McFarlane's Spawn seasons 1-3 - very 90s, but it was fun if you're into that. The Rehersal with Nathan Felder - it's not as good as Nathan For You and it turned into a whole lot of empathetic cringing but I still liked it The New Barbarians - an incredibly bad post-apocalyptic (set in 2019!) movie from 1984 that has definite so-bad-it's-good quality and it's worth watching if you're into modern post-apocalyptic media. The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension - good as hell and way ahead of its time |

I'm back to passive entertainment again. For the past month or so, I have watched a bunch of stuff and can recommend the following: Columbo This is a classic I had never managed to sit down and watch and the reason why is the drat length. Each episode is basically a whole movie! Turns out, regardless of length, no moment is wasted and everything is plotted just right. By the end of the first episode I was completely in awe. It's so expertly done that your very first introduction to Columbo as a character only came more than 30 minutes in, which in any other series would be a completely baffling thing to do. If you have never seen any of it, give the first episode a try at least. Think of it as a small stakes film. We Own This City A recent HBO series and basically a continuation of The Wire (same writing crew and everything), except this time it's real. Life in Baltimore continues to be hell and this mini-series tells the real-life story of a decade of massive corruption in the plain clothes / gun crime police department. It's astounding, leaves you angry at every new bit of information you learn, and the actor known best for his role as The Punisher (you know, every cop's favorite hero) is the one here playing the extremely narcissist villain, Jenkins, and his body language is phenomenal. It's just six episodes and very much worth your time, though I wouldn't call it "fun". Let's Go Luna! So, at some point, it came to my attention that Joe Murray (creator of Rocco's Modern Life) is still out there making cartoons. This is a PBS* show for kids to learn about the world out there, and is also the kind of the thing you can just leave playing in the background while you unwind after an awful/heavy day. Kind of wholesome, cleverly written, not too patronizing for kids, nothing revolutionary -- just what it says in the tin. * if you're outside the US like I am, this series is also available on Archive.org Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling But speaking of Joe Murray and Rocco, did you know that a couple of years ago there was a new Rocco made? Basically an extended episode / small film, but a continuation. And after two decades, what could it be about? Why, it's an amazing meta-commentary about change, how things don't stay the same, and that you shouldn't be stuck to past nostalgia and instead move on, because change is good. Serious master class. It's not preachy, it's just more Rocco, but updated for a different society with twenty years of changes. Chuds were pissed off, of course. And that's a good thing too. Oddtaxi This one is weird to describe. It's an "anime", but not really. A crime/mystery thriller with talking animals, like a Japanese take on Zootopia, centered around a nihilistic taxi driver and the different people he meets in his line of work. I had watched it about two years ago, rewatched it again now, and it still holds up amazingly. There's a very large cast and they are all interconnected in one way or another, to the point I realized half way that if these weren't talking animals and instead normal humans it would be very hard to tell who's who quickly, and sometimes you need to do so with just a quick glance. Very fun series, especially if you are into piecing together different moments to figure out what's really going on behind the scenes. |

I don't know why but I've been watching Survivor recently and it's pretty entertaining. I am watching Season 17 (Gabon) right now and this old science teacher keeps making counterfeit immunity idols and trading them to people who then get laughed at when they try to claim immunity at the tribal council. One of the other competitors is/was the #1 ranked Super Smash Bros player in the world. It's a very BYOB season of Survivor. |
