Might just be that traditional news haven't really been able to get much wind of good coverage past the initial videos and pictures that started coming out a few days ago. Past protests in Iran have typically gotten decent coverage until they were silenced.

I don't really know about US media though, as I'm not American, but it's fully possible that it's just getting drowned out with other news.

e: Also you know, the authorities are actually actively attempting to cut off the protesters from the outside world.

The basis is Quran plus various traditions of hadiths for further elaboration. Sharia is Islamic law, according to that revealed in the Quran and also presented in the hadiths, however actually getting this into a workable legal system and moral code is more complicated which is why there's a difference between the ideal infallible Sharia and that which is put into practice according to interpretation and tradition, that's Fiqh.

So what you have are quranic verses that emphasize modesty and separation of the sexes, some more specific, some vaguer than others, then you also have a myriad of others, then these are interpreted into actual practice.

IIRC the verse most often cited is the one that mentions women draping a specific garment (the identity of which is often debated) about themselves to cover up some part of themselves and men not exposing their bellies or lower legs, something along those lines.

e: Question would it be better if the quran directly said to beat women who wear their headscarves too loose?

I probably did interpret the question unfairly with that last added line. So I'm sorry about that and you're right to call it out.

The rest of the answer still basically stands though, like Sharia, what actually consitutes hijab (which in its actual meaning is modest dress, not the more modern type of Islamic headscarf, though meanings of words shift) has been interpreted and enforced differently depending on time and place.

e: I'd say the most significant thing with the implementation in Iran is how its being enforced in an arbitrary and brutal manner by a bunch of creeps who are widely despised. That tends to make whatever whatever it is that's being enforced a symbol of oppression. With that in mind it doesnt really matter if the Iranian version of "modest dress" is more or less strict than in many other countries.

I would ask that people try to interpret things like questions in the least objectionable light, at least initially. It's not like assholes hesitate to out themselves in general. I will be keeping an eye on this thread and it's associated reports - please let me know via PMs or the report system if someone starts showing rear end, but wait until it's more than just a crack (if that makes sense).

On the other hand please examine your biases before posting here and try to be sensitive to posters who are familiar with and may have ties to Iran/Iranian culture and are willing to explain things while there's people getting the poo poo kicked out of them for protesting.

TL;DR: have grace with each other and use the report button liberally

As a bald, you are in fact forced to learn this lesson the first time you go hatless for an extended length of time on a hot and sunny day.

It's probably not common knowledge how horrific head sunburns are. Aside from just the general pain, the peeling is a nightmare, especially if (as is likely) you're freshly bald so still have a lot of hair follicles to disrupt an even peel.

I made this mistake one time only, and never again. If I leave the house, there is something on my head.

My girlfriend is Persian/Kurdish and grew up in the same city Mahsa Amini was arrested and killed in. She participated in protests / civil disobedience when she still lived there and is still in contact via whatsapp with her friends who are still there. The internet outages have made it difficult to share media such as pictures / movies but it seems like encrypted text communication is still working, at least for now. While I've certainly learned a lot about Persian culture from her and her friends while we've been dating there's a lot I don't know, so if anyone has questions about the situation on the ground or the broader social context surrounding things I can ask her if anyone is interested. The one question I saw asked was about if there's any tangible figurehead or movement that the protest can solidify around to enact regime change, and it's something I've asked her about as well. As far as she knows there isn't any such thing, I'm guessing because the Iranian government has gotten very good at breaking any up that appear to be gaining traction.

As I've learned more about the society she came from I've gained a tremendous amount of respect for the bravery she's shown over the years standing up to these monsters. While I'm glad she's safe here in the states her and her friends all wish they could go back to join the protests. I hope this is finally the breaking point for the regime and these protests result in lasting reforms expanding the liberty of their people. I would love to one day be able to travel with her back to her home to experience all the good that exists there.
