in the anime, i think meowth is the brains of the operation. jessie and james are obviously overcommunicating something each, and i suspect jessie to actually be v. self conscious and shy, while james is basically pretty confident and asserting outside his job (he thinks it reflects badly on him in his current position, professionally)
