Mode 7 posted:To kick it off, what’s everyone’s favourite short non-Metroid, non-Castlevania Metroidvania. Is there anything perfectly suited to blasting through in a cozy afternoon or weekend? Mini Ghost, Gato Roboto, and Spooky Ghosts Dot Com are all good metroidvanias that can be finished in about three hours. If you like Mini Ghost, check out Ghost 1.0.

Transiruby is worth checking out if you haven't. It's pretty short, clocking in at about six hours, but what's there is good.

The second half of The Messenger desperately needed a real fast travel system. What they gave us instead is the worst thing they did.

I really liked SHEEPO. It's a short metroidvania with no combat and a heavy focus on platforming.

It's not strictly a metroidvania because nothing's locked behind upgrades, but Kandria is a very good open world 2D platformer that some people here will definitely go for.

SHEEPO is entirely combat-free. Even the boss fights are just platforming segments.

I've never played a Souls game and I thought the combat in Ender Lillies was fine. I guess if you go in expecting something more sophisticated it's going to be a disappointment, but I don't think that's all on the game. The real selling point is the atmosphere, though, and if that doesn't work for you then you're probably not going to be all that wild about it.

Deedlit is fine in terms of gameplay but unless you know the source material you're not going to be able to follow the plot at all. The developer's previous game Touhou Luna Nights is much better on both fronts.

I'm just finishing up 9 Years of Shadows and I agree with the previous posters. It's a very well-done take on the basic metroidvania formula, but there's absolutely nothing exceptional about it. I'll be curious to see what the dev does next, though.

I played through Exorcist Fairy recently. It's more than a little rough around the edges, but the movement and combat are fine, and the basic idea is sound and the English translation is adequate. The big problem is that the endgame was clearly rushed and that leads to a big difficulty spike and some items whose descriptions aren't translated. I got 93% completion in about 9 hours and I do not feel motivated to track down everything I missed.

The Messenger suffers a lot from not having a proper fast travel system in the second half. If you could go directly to any store, it'd be a lot better.

I'm about an hour in to Teslagrad 2 and I'm impressed. The art and sound design are really strong, the movement feels good, and some of the movement abilities that I've unlocked are what I'd expect to get late in a lot of other games. The one part that's a little odd is that there's no life bar and the character just dies to anything, but it doesn't detract from the game IMO.

Sakurazuka posted:That was the main thing that annoyed me about the first one, bosses went on way too long for 'you literally die to anything' to be remotely fun. There's a mechanic that lets you take a few hits during boss fights. You're still fragile but it's not as bad as always dying in one hit.

It's been mentioned once or twice but Ato is another one that's worth keeping an eye on. It's a quality metroidvania with a roughly 4-6 hour playtime and a lot of well-designed boss fights.

The SNK 40th Anniversary Collection has Crystalis along with a bunch of arcade games that you probably won't care about. It holds up really well, comparable to the best indie titles coming out now.

The two content DLCs are basically more of the base game so it really depends on how much you like it. OTOH one's free and the other is $3 so it's not like you're out much if you end up not that wild about it.
