I mean the thread should probably be titled gently caress the NFL and us for watching this blood sport?

The entire process is supposed to be out of the team's hands- it's an independent neurologist making the decision that is fully and solely capable of keeping the player off of the field until they're satisfied they don't have a concussion, and if they do keep them off of the field until they're satisfied they've recovered well enough. I don't know that the neurologist that evaluated Tua was on the take or whatever, but it's 100% a single point of failure for the entire system. After that point you're asking a loving orthopedic surgeon or an NFL head coach to overrule a famous neurologist, and often enough the player themselves- which is a stupid idea that's not going to intervene to fix it.

This might end up being the Dolphins' play honestly

"oh yea our dr who we totally do not pressure in any way at all said it was fine talk to him"

Although I wouldn't cry if said dr got his license revoked in addition to anything that happens to the Dolphins because he either approved it because he's incompetent, approved it because he's on the take/pressured, or got overruled and kept his mouth shut

Loss of Consciousness (including Impact Seizure and/or "fencing posture")
Gross Motor Instability (GMI), identified in the judgment of the club medical staff in consultation with the Sideline UNC, who observe the player's behavior, have access to the player's relevant history and are able to rule out an orthopedic cause for any observed instability

I get your idea, and I hope I’m wrong, but I just get a poo poo vibe from him. I don’t follow the dolphins beyond “team the Bills will play twice” yet in the past few weeks I can’t watch a single NFL broadcast without this dude being the main character for way too long. He’s got some loving weird rear end “practical sarcasm” without being any meaningfully different from ancient poo poo coaches in his behavior. I feel like the NFL likes him because he can be the template for this era’s Bellichek but that they can clip into a 10 second Twitter video because he said a Funny.

Maybe I’m way off base but after tonight I’m guilty until proven innocent with anyone in that loving system. So much for your Yale education that you can’t see a concussion. Regardless of Sunday’s outcome he could have sat Tua tonight.

I don’t mean to be aggro at you it’s just so loving gross.

quote:

The Club physician remains responsible for all final decisions regarding Return-to-Play. However, the Club physician will consult with his/her sideline [Unaffiliated Nuerotrama Consultant (UNC)] team member prior to reaching his/her decision. If the sideline UNC disagrees with the Club physician’s decision to return the player to play or remove the athlete, the sideline UNC will be given an opportunity to explain the basis of his/her opinion. This will be discussed in a collegial fashion in private as to why the player should or should not be returned to the game. The Club physician will communicate his or her final decision to the player."

The independent neurologist doesn't actually have any power to stop someone from playing. They can just make a rec to a team-employed doctor.

If the UNC says, "no way in gently caress should the player be out there," but the team doctor doesn't care, that means the player has passed the concussion protocol. (I think!)

That's very different than the way I thought this worked.

If that's how it worked then this is simply a fundamentally broken process which can never be trusted.

If the team doc overruled the UNC then he's doing nothing more than the work of the team who employs him, its management and owner. The medical staff should be cleared out of course but they did this because they were told to, or had the impression from management and ownership to do this.

He absolutely did have an “orthopedic cause” though- The back injury thing wasn’t something they invented to cover for a concussion, he gets bent over backwards on a QB sneak in the Bills game, is in obvious pain in the pile and gets up and does a similar but lesser version of the staggering after the Milano hit. A back injury can 100% cause your legs to buckle, I’ve had it happen to me after a back injury in a car accident.

People are uncomfortable with the reality that even a properly followed concussion protocol isn’t an adequate protection for player health, but there’s a reality here that everything was done properly here and it ended up with a guy taking a serious head injury.

I think he has a back injury from that play you described.

But I also find it very, very difficult to believe he didn't suffer a concussion last week.

The back of his head hit the field, he shook his head as if it to "shake out the cobwebs" multiple times, and he couldn't walk because of an apparent loss of balance.

While not being perfect I think the protocols plus most teams not wanting to kill off their players has at the very minimum not resulted in something as bad as what we've seen last night where you had something obviously happen in the last week and then the same player thrown back out there. I think obviously they should make whatever changes needed on a league level to protect the players.

That said,
They as an organization (NOT fans) don't give a poo poo about protocols or rules they just want to get away with poo poo to give them an edge.

I'm not so cynical as to believe all 31 other teams would have handled this like the Dolphins did. Maybe a few would have but everyone including Dolfans fans were suspicious of his health after the Milano late hit and they still chose to do what they did.

No he didn't. He was taken out of a game and missed like a half and only because he couldn't return by rule. He played the next game because they claimed he cleared concussion protocol almost immediately.

Edit: The rule that kept him out the one half was the same "Neurological symptoms" rule everyone was talking about with Tua last week.
