The Three Mandatory Rules
:spooky: Watch a movie appropriate to the challenge*
:spooky: Write a review
:spooky: Don't be a dick.

:spooky: THE CHALLENGE BEGINS *TODAY* ON SEPTEMBER 30th. You can only log movies you have watched after this thread has gone live (2PM EST).

:spooky: THE CHALLENGE ENDS ON NOVEMBER 1ST, @ 2PM EST
You will have to have logged your final movie at this point. Final remarks and totals can be posted after 2PM, but new movies to add to your total will not be counted.

:spooky:Personal Goals & Challenges:spooky:

The most common goal among participants is 31 movies, but there is no mandatory amount of films. You can participate with as much or as little enthusiasm as you want. You can watch as many movies as possible. (We've had people literally watch over a hundred films every challenge.) You can keep it casual and just watch what your schedule allows. However, people that meet the 31 film goal are eligible for some prizes.

You can create any personal goals for yourself. Many use the challenge to watch films that are new-to-them. You can catch up on movies that have been released through-out the year, you can make this an excuse to finally watch that classic horror movie. You can use the challenge to watch all the films of a horror director, or an entire horror series you've been interested. You can concentrate on specific sub-genres like Creature Features or Giallos or Hammer-produced films. You can watch films that are only new to you, or only rewatches. You can always ask for a wildcard or recommendations, as well. The possibilities are endless.

The only requirement is to watch a horror movie and then write about it. You can write a review, a list of thoughts you had while watching it, an analysis, essay or interpretation. You can post GIFs, screen grabs, illustrations. The whole intention of this thread is to share what we're watching and our thoughts about it.

The bitter truth: Watching the movies is the easy part. It's finding something to say about them that gets difficult. That's why it's a challenge!

What Movies Can I Watch?
movies, for the sake of this challenge, are considered anything longer than 60 minutes
:spooky: Horror Movies
:spooky:Thrillers
:spooky:Horror Comedies (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil)
:spooky:Horror Musicals (Rocky Horror, Phantom of the Paradise)
:spooky: Movies Set During or Around Halloween (Hocus Pocus, The Guest)
:spooky: Documentaries
- about Halloween (The American Scream)
- about the supernatural
- about the horror genre (Horror Noire)
- about horror movies (Never Sleep Again)
-about a subject that is justifiably horror-related (The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes, Cropsey)
:spooky: Family Friendly movies that meet the above requirements (Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein)

(If you have questions about whether or not a movie counts, feel free to ask me.)

What DOESN'T Count
:ghost: TV Shows (This is CineD, not TVIV)
:ghost: mini-series
:ghost: Masters of Horror or Fear Itself episodes
:ghost: MST3k episodes (the movies are abridged)
:ghost: Pornography (it hasn't happened yet, but I swear, someone's gonna try and watch Edward Penishands for this)

These is always a grey area that creates a lot of debates of what's considered "fair", and it gets exhausting trying to pick and choose what is allowed for the challenge. Mini-series are becoming more popular on streaming services, and it complicates the challenge. A single episode/chapter of a mini-series may be as long as a feature-length film, but because it's really a part of a whole, there will be some who want to count individual parts as single entries (boosting their watch numbers) and others who consider the whole thing a single entry. It's a little unfair for someone to watch a 45 minute episode of Masters of Horror and it counts the same as Brand New Cherry Flavor, which takes over 7 hours to watch, or Never Sleep Again, which is a single documentary that is a 4 hour watch. It also creates the grey area of "Is ____ a show or a anthology mini-series? Technically season 1 is self-contained." Let's just avoid it altogether. Please just watch something else. This is a FILM forum, so just stick with movies for the challenge.

There will be the inevitable naysayer who posts "I don't care what the rules say, I'm going to count Netflix's Midnight Mass." Just play nice and watch a movie instead. I probably won't call you out, because I have better things to do, but it will be ignored when it comes to tallying results for surprises, and it may just open you up to punishments. Consider this your warning.

:iiam: There will be secret challenges announced in the next post for those that want to be pushed outside of their comfort zones.

If you are working from a Letterboxd list, feel free to share it.

There are various discords that have branched from CineD, with a couple of them being horror-centric. I'm not going to post them. If you're in the know, you can ask for invites from people, and hope a PM comes your way. (Don't ask me.)

:spooky: SPOOKY BINGO 2022 Edition :spooky:

The rules are simple. As you watch a qualifying movie, you will mark your SPOOKY card. It's bingo rules, so you are trying to spell SPOOKY either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. You can also fill the card. Most spots have multiple qualifiers, so read closely. You can mark your card however you see fit: simple scribbles on MS Paint (or PhotoPea), posters, or whatever symbols.

Movies must be new-to-you, unless otherwise noted in the descriptions. Only one film per Spooky block, no double-dipping.

After sleeping on the horror threads for years and years, I finally did the October challenge for the first time in 2021. I ended up hitting a whopping 71 movies--work from home did wonders! I'm actually on parental leave for all of October, but with a 5-month-old I don't see averaging 2.29 movies per day. I'm thinking of aiming for 31 movies again, though. Consider this a lukewarm commitment until I see the challenges. Spook on, folks! :spooky:

In for 31 as always!

The main thing I have planned for this year is 80s/90s slasher icon marathon where I go through my favorites from Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Hellraiser, Child's Play, and then Scream and a few of the Scream-lite imitators like I Know What You Did Last Summer(there's a new UHD for this that I'm looking forward to checking out). These are nostalgic movies that I watch almost every year anyway but I'm gonna line them up and pack all that nostalgia into a single week this time, with the new Hellraiser and Halloween Ends of course included.

Jason has to sit this one out, he's a special boy that gets his own special attention during the summer months.

YES! I've been waiting for this all year!

Doing 31 films minimum. Aiming for at least 2 films a day. I will be doing films I haven't done for previous October and May challenges. I keep a list of all I've done so far to try to avoid repeats.

Now it's just wait for the Scream Stream announcement.

It's normal to be nervous when it comes to writing reviews. That's the most common concern raised by everyone new to our October movie free for all. If it helps, read some of the past October challenge threads to see how each of us does ours.

Seconding this. I was pretty nervous and thought it was going to be a huge time sink, but I learned pretty quick that you can write a couple of paragraphs and people will read them and engage with you. It turns out to be a lot of fun.

I think when you look at some of the posts over the next few days you'll see that there's a wide range of how people handle the write-ups. There's no pressure at all to do like a whole multi-paragraph effort post, some people do that and then others will write three or four sentences about each movie. No big deal either way.

I'm nowhere near some of the reviewers, but what's helped me a lot to get more words is just keeping a physical notebook and writing thoughts during the movie. Not all of it gets copied over but it's nice to record things I like or dislike right at the moment, and feels better than typing on my phone. I have a fountain pen with oxblood ink now so it'll be extra spoopy.

On a different note, this month will be a lot of fun because a few friends are also doing this 31 movie challenge with us. Not sure if they'll make it to this thread but we're planning a lot of movie nights and have spreadsheets going.

I'm down for:

- 31 new-to-me horror movies.
- (31) horror movies from countries that I've never seen a movie from. Shorts count. Honest attempts to watch something I believe is a horror movie based on the Letterboxd description count. "Country" as defined by Letterboxd.

Starting map:

- Arsenic and Old Lace

Going for a conservative 15 because I'm a coward busy. So pumped. My body is so ready for peak spooky season.

e: The main theme this year is showing my partner a bunch of rad movies she's never seen. My secondary theme is to show me a bunch of rad movies I've never seen.

#1.) The Snorkel (1958; Blu-ray)

Wow, this movie gets right into it. The first five minutes or so are spent on a dialogue-free scene of a man preparing a room for his wife's murder, via lamp gas-jets. He then hides himself beneath the room, while his wife sleeps, feeding himself oxygen through... a snorkel! Waiting out the police investigation in that space beneath the room, he hears their suspicions, and the immediate accusation from his step-daughter of his role in the murder. Her certainty that he did it provides the conflict for the rest of the film.

With the main setting being an Italian villa, the primary cast is kept rather small. There's the murderer (Paul), his step-daughter (Candy), her friend Jean (who came with her from England), and a couple members of the police force, plus the step-daughter's dog (Toto). And with Candy playing detective, the focus is on her, and Paul's responses to her nosing about. That narrowness of focus benefits the film, because apart from Paul (played by Peter van Eyck), the performances aren't very strong. Van Eyck gives his character an appreciable veneer over his menace, with more cracks appearing as Candy gets closer to the truth, and while the script makes his character a bit clumsy in his cover-up, that's not van Eyck's fault.

The film is shot nicely, which might build a sense of foreboding, but the nature of the conflict requires any action against Candy to be postponed until the end of the film, which hobbles the tension. On top of that, the potential excellence of the ending is quickly compromised, in an apparent concession to moral censors. Generally enjoyable, with the main disappointment being that the atmosphere isn't more richly sinister.

Lipstick Apathy
Put me down for 16 which isn't a spooky number, but more than half of 31. Hopefully I'll hit more, but I'm a bit busy this month

I’m gonna try but I’m NOT writing more than a paragraph. I don’t have anything to say.

Also I’m not even making a list. I’m just gonna watch something every other day or whatever
