a pve mode in this game would have absolutely been absurdly popular
this thread is genuinely the only place where I've ever seen people have a "whatever, who cares" reaction to the cancelled pve announcement. even twitch streamers who play the game's pvp more than almost anyone else up at gm+ are pissed about it, it's really funny that someone can have their head stuck in the sand to the degree that they don't realize that a whole lot of people really really wanted this(and secondly, that there just are way more pve gamers than pvp gamers out there)

no

anyways I'm just thinking about how bobby kotick made $185 million in 2019, and how if even half that money was put towards making the pve campaign they could have had a whole secondary team to work on it alongside the main team doing stuff for the seasonal pvp

From what I hear Nintendo does things like "put the wellbeing and integrity of the company long term first, including staff", "releasing games when they're done" and so on. However I'm not going to pretend any corporation, especially based on their public image, is a shining beacon of doing right by workers and perfectly run. Nintendo got pulled in by the TotK remark and yeah, compared to Blizzard they're looking pretty respectful. There are probably warts there if you knew where to look.
Mostly just their attitude towards emulation/modding/fangames, but that's not related to their workers.

Most faster shooters have at least a bit of inertia, letting you a/d strafe back and forth with no delay is quite unusual.

something being good for making money doesn't mean it's the best for the sake of the game as a game

bear in mind that historically aim assist has usually not been as strong as it is in a game like apex. you do not need that level of AA to get console players on board. random example: halo 3's sticky reticule is noticeable, but a lot more mundane.

the dev commentaries talk about the reasons behind random crits-they're there for at least a couple reasons.
both helping to break up stalemates, and helping players go on sudden kill streaks for those "rare high moments" where you sometimes get to go on a rampage.

dogstile posted:

Unironically one of the best balanced sniper characters in any game. You don't get any of this flying across the map headshotting your support out of nowhere bullshit.
the charge mechanic (and lack of basically anything else other than having a sniper rifle) are definitely good in that regard, it's just funny for someone to talk about tf2 having a lack of headshots when sniper is probably the single most complained about class in the game

Honestly, I've learned over time that many many gamers do not have headphones or just pay 0 attention to sound period.

People playing games while listening to music is a big part of this, too.

is said 200 health hero just standing around and doing nothing

because unless you burst them down insanely fast, you have to be super super consistent in your aim to have a prayer in killing someone that's getting pocketed before they kill you or something else fucks up the opportunity. what is required from the player trying to kill someone getting healed is very disproportionate to what is required from the person healing.

Are you saying that you should be able to win 1v2 without having to be much better than your opponents?
No, I'm saying that overwatch's gamefeel suffers terribly due to the amount of healing(and damage mitigation in general) that it has. I don't think I've ever played an FPS with healing as powerful as OW's and it makes the moment to moment feedback from shooting at guys feel way worse. You're constantly rolling the boulder uphill and if you falter for even a moment it goes crashing back down immediately.

The bit you're ignoring here is the part in the next post where I clarify that I don't think you should be able to roll over a duo without being quite a bit better than them, but that the way healing works in overwatch(very strong and consistent) makes the gunplay feel bad because every fight becomes a sisyphean ordeal if you don't immediately end it. This is something that isn't normal in other FPS games, despite many many games also making it very hard to win a 2v1.

On a slightly different but still related note, one of the things OW should absolutely have copied from tf2 but didn't is the healing ramp, where healing is only fast after the healing target has spent some time not taking damage. It's a genius mechanic in general and in particular it's really good at incentivizing players to take cover and not expect to tank through damage with heals, which is a lesson that most lower rank OW players have struggled with through the game's entire lifespan.

TF2 have some sort of queue system now instead of servers?
It's had matchmaking for a long time, it's just that it's matchmaking you onto servers and you can edit the matchmaking options to choose what maps it can join into. And then once you're on a server at the end of each game it calls a vote between 3 different maps for what to play next(I think one of these is always the map you just played, so the players can keep playing harvest or whatever over and over if they want).

LazyMaybe

Yeah, in tf2 you can start a match with like 4 vs 6 players and it's fine because it will generally fill up to at least 10 vs 10 within like a minute or two.

Nevertheless, letting players pick maps is a strong avenue towards happy players.
