Based off a smash hit manga running in Weekly Shonen Jump from December 2018-December 2020 (and continuing in Jump Plus since summer 2022), Chainsaw Man is an action series created by Tatsuki Fujimoto, most widely known for Fire Punch. Set in a Cold War era Japan haunted by armies of demons, it's the violent and over-the-top of story of a young man named Denji, his chainsaw dog Pochita, and a host of other lunatics trying to stay alive in a world gone almost as mad as they are.

Mappa announced the anime all the way back in late 2020, but now, after over a year of waiting, it's starts on October 11th with a simulcast on Crunchyroll for viewers outside of Japan.

Characters:

Denji is our hero. A broke teenager with no education, he took up demon hunting to pay off his dead father's debt to the Yakuza. The animal he's using as a weapon is Pochita, his best and only friend. Even if he's a Chainsaw Devil, he's a good dog.

Together, they kill Devils and make plans to achieve Denji's dreams: Having jam on bread, and maybe, some day, getting to touch a boob.

He likes people who like him!

Denji is voiced by Kikunosuke Toya in Japanese and Ryan Colt Ley in English

Makima is Denji's superior, a Public Safety Devil Hunter. Mysterious and manipulative, she agrees to let him live and draw a government salary in exchange for doing exactly as she says.

She's also a movie buff.

Makima is voiced by Tomori Kusunoki (LLENN in Sword Art Online Alternative: Gale Gun Online) in Japanese and Suzie Yeung in English

Aki Hayakawa is one of Denji's coworkers, a straightlaced professional who joined up to get revenge on the Gun Devil, the legendary monster who killed his family... along with over a million people. All in about five minutes. He doesn't approve of Denji's casual attitude. Denji doesn't much like him either.

Makima makes them live in the same house, presumably because she finds it funny.

Aki is voiced by Shougo Sakata in Japanese and Reagan Murdock in English

Power is a Fiend, a Devil that took up residence in a human corpse. As a Devil, she's incapable of lying, and wants to make sure everyone around her knows she's a genius with an IQ of at least 100 who's pretty much guaranteed to win the Nobel Prize.

She joined up with the Devil Hunters to find and rescue her pet cat.

Power is voiced by Ai Fairouz (Jolyne Kuujou in Jojo's Bizarre Adventures) in Japanese, and Sarah Wiedenheft in English

Himeno is one of the most veteran Devil Hunters working for Makima. A chain smoker whose partners have a bad habit of dying on her, she tries to teach Denji the ropes before he joins them. She sold her eye to a ghost so she could use its hand to kill things.

Himeno is voiced by Mariya Ise (Inamoto-San in Dynazenon) in Japanese.

Directed by Ryuu Nakayama, responsible for the highly regarded Black Flash episode of Jujutsu Kaisen, and Tatsuya Yoshihara, director of Black Clover, Chainsaw Man features a script adapted by the highly regarded Hiroshi Seko (responsible for bringing Vinland Saga, Attack on Titan season 4, Summertime Render, Mob Psycho 100, Dorohedoro, Jujutsu Kaisen, and many many more to the screen), sound direction by Kisuke Koizumi, and a new ED every episode, featuring artists from Aimer to Maximum the Hormone.

Mappa went without a production committee on this one, taking on all the risks themselves in exchange for maximum potential benefit, creating new facilities, increasing animator pay, and otherwise doing everything they could to make the show a success. We'll see if it pays off soon, but even if they fail to live up to expectations, the manga guarantees this will be a crazy ride.

For now, though, you can watch the final trailer for a small taste of what's to come.

And remember. No matter how terrible Devils might be, there is something even they fear.

FYI, for anyone considering checking this out... the manga for Part 1 is only 97 chapters. Give it a shot!

Man, I've always wanted to watch an exploitation movie in the form of anime. Hope the adapters realizes that's the main draw to this whole thing.

Really excited for this. Only disappointment is that it's only going to be 1 cour, so there's no way it's a full adaptation of part 1. Hopefully we get a season 2 sometime in the near future to finish out part 1 at least.

anime is not good
the last time i was this excited for an anime adaption of a series i was following was for the kaguya-sama anime, and the one before that was mob psycho 100. i really hope my luck holds a third time and they knock this adaptation out of the park too. the manga has to be one of the best things being published right now

On the other hand, that does mean losing the week-to-week excitement that the anime will provide, which the manga also had. There's something to be said for the "What the hell is going to happen next?" you get from a lot of the chapter endings, and reading it all at once means no room for tension to build.

The thing I am most excited about this going into the premiere is the score on all the trailers. It's very much my kind of electronic/industrial. Now I'm just hoping to god they go very light with chainsaw revving in the actual episodes themselves to not detract from that.

Never read the manga. I am here to see demon body parts forcefully separated by the rotational forces of linked metal teeth along a guide bar.

Can I laugh at people who are complaining that Makima in the anime isn't as thick as she is in fanart? Just laughing at a fanbase that gaslit itself almost as hard as Genshin Impact's.

It's not just fanart, even if most of the manga is less visually absurd. Chapter 74 left a very large impact on people's memories.
