Business Insider is reporting that Musk spoke with Putin before posting those polls. However. Musk denies he spoke directly with Putin.

https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-spoke-vladimir-putin-before-ukraine-peace-plan-report-2022-10

quote:

Tesla CEO Elon Musk spoke with Vladimir Putin before pitching his Ukraine peace plan on Twitter that repeated Kremlin talking points, political scientist says
  • Elon Musk reportedly met with Putin before tweeting a controversial poll on the Ukraine war.
  • Putin told Musk he was "prepared to negotiate" if certain conditions were met, according to Ian Bremmer.
  • Musk denied that he met with Putin before tweeting the poll.

Before tweeting a peace plan to end the war in Ukraine that parroted Russian demands, Elon Musk reportedly spoke privately with Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to a leading political analyst.

Eurasia Group founder and president Ian Bremmer in a Monday email to his organization's subscribers said that he spoke with Musk two weeks ago. At the time, Musk told Bremmer that Putin explicitly told him that he was "prepared to negotiate" under the conditions that Crimea remains under Russian control, that Ukraine remained neutral, and that Russia's annexations of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia were enforced.

According to Bremmer, Putin told Musk that these were goals he'd accomplish "no matter what," or else he would turn to "major escalation."

Bremmer also said that Musk told him Putin said if Zelenskyy "invaded Crimea, Russia would retaliate with a nuclear strike on Ukraine," adding, "Elon said everything needed to be done to avoid that outcome."

Musk, however, denies that he spoke with Putin recently.

Last week, Musk shared a public poll pitching a plan to stop the war. Musk's proposal heavily favored Kremlin positions and his comments echoed Kremlin talking points, for which he was widely accused of amplifying Russian propaganda.

Putin has repeatedly and falsely claimed that Ukraine is not a real country, and has referred to Ukrainians and Russians as "one people." The Russian leader has employed a distorted view of history as one of many justifications for Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine; Russia seized the Crimea peninsula, a key military base with direct Black Sea access, by force in 2014 and used that region earlier this year to invade Ukraine from the south.

The billionaire was harshly criticized for the tweet, including by Ukrainian officials and diplomats.

Musk has been outspoken about his increasing worries that the Ukraine-Russia conflict could escalate to nuclear levels, as Putin recently warned, and he has a front-row seat as the SpaceX CEO, which operates the Starlink satellite network that Ukraine is reliant on to link its forces and target Russian positions.

Elon Musk did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment to confirm he met with Putin. But Musk in a tweet denied that he had spoken to Putin before tweeting the poll.

"I have spoken to Putin only once and that was about 18 months ago. The subject matter was space," Musk said.

I am assuming the mean "met with" in an indirect sense. I dint think Putin is expecting a lot of foreign visitors these days and it would be kind if obvious, if Musk took a sudden trip to Moscow.
I think he's being very deliberate with his words so he can claim later that he never lied or misled anyone. He didn't meet with Putin, he spoke with him. Or he never spoke with Putin, he spoke with his representative etc. It would be easy to issue a blanket denial but he didn't do that.

Ukraine war: Multiple explosions in Kyiv as Ukraine reports kamikaze drone strikes

At least three explosions have been heard in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, after air raid sirens went off.

Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said residential buildings in the central Shevchenkivskiy area have been damaged.

Andriy Yermak, head of President Zelensky's office, said the attacks were from so-called kamikaze drones.

It comes a week after the capital was hit by several Russian missiles at rush hour, in a nationwide attack which left 19 dead.

The explosions happened at around 07:00 local time (04:00 GMT), said the BBC's Paul Adams, who is in the city.

Writing on the Telegram social media site, Mr Klitschko said they were in the Shevchenkivskiy district, which was hit by several strikes last week.

He said rescuers were on site, and told residents to stay in air raid shelters.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the strikes last week were in retaliation for the bombing of a key bridge linking Russia to occupied Crimea, which he blamed on Ukraine.

It was the first time during the war that the centre of Kyiv had been directly targeted.

Earlier this week, Mr Putin said there was no need for more large-scale strikes on Ukraine.

Most designated targets had been hit, he said, adding that it was not his aim to destroy the country.

After it's locked to a target the drone goes into automatic mode to make radio jamming ineffective.

Russian jet released missile near RAF aircraft over Black Sea

A missile was released from a Russian aircraft near an unarmed RAF plane on patrol over the Black Sea, the defence secretary has said.

Ben Wallace said the "potentially dangerous" incident happened on 29 September in international airspace.

Russia said it was the result of a "technical malfunction".

UK patrols over the Black Sea were suspended but have now resumed and are escorted by a fighter jet following Russia's response.

Mr Wallace told MPs the UK was not treating the incident as a "deliberate escalation" by Russia but said it was a "reminder of quite how dangerous things can be when you choose to use your fighters in the manner that the Russians have done over many periods of time".

He was speaking in the Commons following his urgent trip to the US earlier this week where he discussed the security situation in Ukraine, including the threat of a nuclear attack, with his American counterpart.

The incident last month involved two Russian SU-27s and an unarmed RAF RC-135 Rivet Joint - a civilian-style aircraft.

Mr Wallace said that during an "interaction" one of the SU-27 aircraft "released a missile in the vicinity of the RAF Rivet Joint beyond visual range".

He said he expressed his concerns in a letter to the Russian defence minister.

The minister's reply on 10 October said an investigation had been conducted and found there had been a "technical malfunction" with the Russian plane, Mr Wallace said.

They also acknowledged the incident took place in international airspace, he added.

Mr Wallace suggested the Black Sea incident showed the Russian military were "not beyond making the wrong calculation or indeed deciding that the rules don't apply to them".

Luke Pollard, Labour's shadow defence minister, said: "This incident also acts as a serious reminder about the importance of avoiding escalation and miscalculation while continuing the UK's united support for Ukraine."

Apparently Finland and Poland have both said they are prepared to send some of their Leopard 2s to Ukraine if the EU approves it. Both countries have the 2A4 variant as their most numerous version.

Poland joins Finland in backing sending Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine

Momentum is building to send Leopard tanks to Ukraine after Poland joined Finland in saying it stands ready to supply the heavy weapons in the fight against Russia.

Up until now Kyiv’s Western allies have rejected appeals for tanks, fearing they could escalate the war. But after donations of armoured vehicles last week by the US, France and Germany, attitudes appear to be changing.

On Satuday Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said he could transfer Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if a larger Leopard-coalition is formed, the Visegrad24 news channel reported.

"Poland has been trying for months to ensure that modern, heavy equipment, anti-aircraft, anti-missile equipment is delivered to Ukraine," his office said on Twitter.

It follows an earlier annoucement by Finland which said it is ready to supply tanks if Europe agrees to the move.

"If Europe starts giving tanks to Ukraine even an inch more, Finland should be involved. Of course, with our small contribution, because our own defense capability is always a priority for us as a border country with Russia," IndeAntti Hakkianen, chairman of the defense committee, was quoted by the Kyiv Independent as saying.

The tanks, which weigh around 60 tons, have the ability to engage moving targets while moving over rough terrain.

One thing I’ve been wondering about with all these residential strikes, how is Russia selecting these buildings? It seems completely random. I’ve read some theories online that say that these buildings were all near legitimate targets and the missiles hit them due to poor quality guidance systems or that some high ranking UAF official lived there and this was an attempt to kill them. There have also been some more fringe theories that say that that the UAF is secretly using residential buildings as HQs so they’re legitimate targets. However, I would think that if the UAF was using them as HQs, that information would have leaked out a long time ago.

Canada is sending 4 Leopard 2A4s to Ukraine. We have 62 2A4s and 20 2A6s. However, only 20 tanks are operational. The rest are in various states of storage or maintenance.

Canada will send Ukraine 4 Leopard battle tanks: defence minister

Ottawa will donate four of the Canadian Forces’ Leopard 2A4 main battle tanks to Ukraine as Kyiv continues to defend itself against invading Russian forces.

National Defence Minister Anita Anand made the commitment on Thursday, ending the debate over whether Canada would ship battle tanks from its military stockpile to Ukraine.

Anand also said that Ottawa is providing trainers, spare parts and ammunition. She left open the possibility of sending more Leopards in the future.

The Leopards that the federal government is donating are among 112 currently owned by the Canadian Armed Forces, which includes 82 designed for combat.

“This donation, combined with the contributions of allies and partners, will significantly help the armed forces of Ukraine as they fight heroically to defend their nation’s freedom and sovereignty,” Anand said.

“These heavily armoured and highly protected vehicles provide soldiers with a tactical advantage on the battlefield. Thanks to their excellent mobility, their firepower and their survivability, these tanks will allow Ukraine to liberate even more of its territory and defend its people from Russia’s brutal invasion.”

Anand added the tanks will be sent to Ukraine in the “coming weeks,” and that they are “combat-ready.”

U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday the U.S. will send 31 M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, reversing months of persistent arguments by Washington that the tanks were too difficult for Ukrainian troops to operate and maintain.

The U.S. decision follows Germany’s move to send 14 Leopard 2 A6 tanks from its own stocks. Germany had said the Leopards would not be sent unless the U.S. put its Abrams on the table, not wanting to incur Russia’s wrath without the U.S. similarly committing its own tanks.

READ MORE: Russia unleashes missiles on Kyiv after Ukraine secures western tanks

“This is the result of intensive consultations, once again, with our allies and international partners,” Chancellor Olaf Scholz told German lawmakers. “It was right and it is important that we didn’t let ourselves be driven (into making the decision).”

Biden said European allies have agreed to send enough tanks to equip two Ukrainian tank battalions or a total of 62 tanks.

“With spring approaching, Ukrainian forces are working to defend the territory they hold and preparing for additional counter offences,” Biden said. “To liberate their land, they need to be able to counter Russia’s evolving tactics and strategy on the battlefield in the very near term.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed satisfaction at the news. Several European countries have equipped their armies with Leopard 2 tanks, and Germany’s announcement means they can give some of their stocks to Ukraine.
