Ashley's slightly slow reactions can really screw you on the truck part if you're not careful. I've seen her get run over by the wreck several times because she was just a tiny bit behind in following.

There's a breakable window in that hut you used towards the end of the big Ganado area that leads you an orange gem for the mask.

Also I'm pretty sure that Mendez takes double damage from fire weapons, basically Incendiary grenades and barrels, but I haven't tested it myself.

Another big difference I noticed from the GC-> future ports is that in the GC version, if El Gigante destroys the wooden huts, the items inside get destroyed as well. The only exception is the Old Key.

Enemies disappear because the more ragdolls you have laying around the more costly it becomes for the system to run the game. More ragdolls and stuff laying around=lower and lower FRPS. This isn't a stealth game, you want that kind of consideration you play Hitman or Splinter Cell, we can't have 17 enemies leaving bodies behind and maintaining a stable framerate on a GameCube's hardware.

I don't like the Ashley Gigantos fight much, the general boss structure is fine but there's just too many opportunities for her to get caught up into instafail bits for it to be fun. I mostly like her as an escort quest, this part just seems like it leans into the annoying aspects too much.

In contrast, Mendez can be frustrating but I think he's the coolest boss fight in the game. As a general newcomer to the series, I was already loving the swerve into Thing-esque villager transformations, then he comes along and I just go :aaaaa:. Just perfect creepy design and atmosphere.

And yeah, I love the game already, but the castle section is what really takes it into all-timer batshit bananas territory

I should point out that the second El Gigante was a slightly different model to the first, he has a pointier nose and more pronounced jaw than the first.

Nothing else is different but it's just a neat visual detail that most people wouldn't notice.

This is a solid spot in terms of opening up new weapons, just lots of ones to play around with even if they're not all ones I go for in a normal run. How do folks feel about the riot gun in general? I pick it up sometimes, but it's one I skip pretty often because I know for a fact I'm gonna buy the next one coming along. One of those situations where I hate to dump money into a weapon I know I'm just going to replace, and the original shotgun isn't terrible.

Actually, that made me think of another question, I've never paid close attention to the resale price for upgraded weapons vs the cost of the upgrade. I always assume you're losing a lot of money doing that, but maybe it's not as bad as I think and I should really be putting money into stuff like the riot gun.

The parasites seemed to be animated at 30 fps even when you weren't using the zoom, so I think that's just one of the things that didn't get updated to run at 60 fps in the remaster. For example, the reloading animations also play at 30 fps, which is pretty noticeable with the rifles in particular.

Only the rifle reloads!
I dont think RE4 does drop fps for faraway models, as you could see in the village canyon section, this is all just a weird quirk of the UHD version.

The animation doesn't exist beyond 30fps short of recreating the entire sequence. Unfortunately redoing the reload animation is not feasible and not within the scope or budget constraints that we have to work with for the particular port project.

Which i imagine is also the case for fhe parasite animations, and a few other things we havent encountered yet.

The riot gun is pretty bad - the stats are good compared to the unupgraded regular shotgun, but slightly worse than what you'll have if you've kept the starting gun upgraded*. It also costs quite a bit of cash compared to the 0 pesetas the regular one costs you, plus upgrade costs putting you behind the curve. Equally important, the Riot Gun's big feature is that it has a tighter shot pattern and is thus more useful at longer ranges. You don't snipe with a shotgun - that is what rifles are for - and that same tight pattern reduces the close-in crowd control ability. The riot gun also takes up more inventory space and is extremely ugly. It is simply better to ignore it completely until the final shotgun becomes available.

*You can see in the video that the sold shotgun had a firepower of 5 and a capacity of 10, while the Riot Gun starts with the same firepower and a capacity of 7. Once you factor in the firepower upgrade cost, you spend 52000 for an extremely marginal upgrade in firepower and an outright downgrade in capacity.

The semi-auto rifle, on the other hand, has real advantages over the bolt-action despite a lower (depending on version) firepower. Buying that is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

The mine thrower is the absolute best weapon in the game, but in an extremely deceptive way.

Kibayasu

I forget if its just the exclusive upgrade but I think the riot gun's thing is that it has a longer range than the others. Its not much of an increase but it isn't nothing.

That's exactly the thing it is good at. And that's not what you want a shotgun for in this game - if you're shooting at range you want to be using the mine thrower, rifle, or a pistol (depending on what you're shooting at and your current ammunition situation). Shotguns are best (in this game) at close range knockaway.

Sum Gai
Mar 23, 2013
Also doesn't the base shotgun get a long range upgrade anyway for the exclusive? Agreed that sniping things isn't really why you use a shotgun, and the exclusive's a fair ways away, but still.

The exclusive upgrade for the regular shotgun has considerably longer range, while the riot gun deals more damage with a tighter spread.

Yep, it gets a range boost but the riot gun is still a step above it in power by the end. The next shotgun beats them both in power by its final regular upgrade though, even before you get the insane special ammo boost. Feels like that's the real one to focus on since I also use shotguns as in-your-face weapons anyway, so range isn't gonna matter to me 99% of the time.

Castle is the best area of the game IMO, or at least it does the most interesting stuff. Plus Salazar is a very fun antagonist all throughout.

E: the trick for that room with the Castle Key is to grab the key, then immediately whip around and shoot that explosive barrel as everyone runs in for the ambush. You can also leave Ashley by the big castle door while you do it as the ambush team just spawns right by your location, rather than way back by where you entered the zone.

God I love this game. Traditionally I went Blacktail/Striker/Semi-auto rifle/Broken Butterfly but in my last couple playthroughs I made a point of not using any of those. Standard rifle is definitely better, Red9 is good but a little less satisfying to use for me. I think I actually ran the Punisher the whole way through last time just to say I did it and man does that gun loving suck. The riot gun is also terrible and ugly too.

TMP and Mine Thrower though. Extremely good poo poo

And yeah the castle is definitely the best part of the game, I love to just mutter MUERE or whatever they’re saying under my breath.

Probably because people were expecting something like a grenade launcher that you can point and shoot to quickly delete enemies. And they found that no, it does not work like that and you have to think about how you use the mine thrower. In other words, the same pitfall everyone runs into with the TMP, expecting the gun to behave in one way when the best usage comes from operating the gun in a different way.

You get cash for getting all of the bottle caps for each version of the shooting range, at least in more recent versions of the game. It's also way easier with the pistol + rifle pre-load, since as you said you need to headshot all targets to have a chance.

And yeah the water room is one of the toughest spots in the game for sure. It's also a good showcase of the game's dynamic difficulty adjustments- the crossbow and scythe guys don't always show up if you've really been getting your rear end kicked prior to that room.

Additionally, in the section later on where you have to protect Ashley, the zealots won't run as much and take longer to grab Ashley, and eventually if you die enough fewer zealots spawn.

I recently did a full no-merchant run of RE4, and let me tell you I don't think I could have done the crank setpiece with just the starting pistol if it wasn't for the dynamic difficulty adjustments.

Also related to difficulty, the unlockable Professional difficulty is functionally identical to Normal, except that the difficulty slider is set to maximum and does not adjust.

Also, the riot-shield reinforcements don't spawn unless you kill a certain number of enemies on the main floor, I think it's three.

Ah, the water room. I have mixed feelings about it lately, it's the setpiece I mentioned somewhere upthread where I thought I was having a good run and then showed up there with literally a few handgun bullets and a grenade and no realistic way to restock enough to get through. Game-ending ammo allotment system aside, I think it's a mostly good setpiece. My main issue is that it feels like it needs better checkpointing - its sections are great, but they can be a pain to get through multiple times if you die pretty late. It just feels like more of a slog when that happens compared to that bit with Luis in the cabin a few updates ago.
