Set in Spring 1999...

Nagomi Wahira comes to Akihabara, longing to be a cute maid. End-of-the-century "Akiba" is filled with a wide variety of maids. The maid café "Ton Tokoton", commonly known as "Pig Hut", is open as well! The rookie maid enters the store and encounters an unpredictable maid, sending her into a big panic.

Nagomi must do her best to elevate the Pig Hut over all other maid cafés vying for top ranking. Along the way she'll slice out a place for herself amid the frills and thrills of life at the Pig Hut. Just when Nagomi's dreams are within her grasp, she discovers not everything is as it seems amid the maid cafés of Akihabara.

"Welcome to the pigsty, master~!"

Akiba Maid War is an original production brought to you by studio P.A. Works, who have worked on such titles as Angel Beats and Uma Musume. A 'dark comedy', we follow the story of a young girl chasing her dreams to become an Akihabara maid, but as it turns out, being an Akiba Maid is not all it's cracked up to be!

If you've played Yakuza/Like a Dragon, this anime is what you get if all those thugs were cute anime girls. Just as violent, and just as funny.

Let's meet the pigs!

Nagomi Wahira
VA: Reina Kondou (Nikaido from Dorohedoro, Otter from Kemono Friends)

Our main character. Really wants to be a maid, but she might not be maid for it.

Ranko Mannen
VA: Rina Satou (Misaka from Railgun, Kaede from Non Non Biyori)

Deadpan, and twice as deadly. Takes being a maid very seriously. Also 35 years old.

Yumechi
VA: Minami Tanaka (Lily from Zombieland Saga, Mary from Kakegurui)

Top maid at Ton Tokoton. Well respected, but also quick-witted.

Shiipon
VA: Ayahi Takagaki (Rika from SAO, Chris from Symphogear)

Gyaru maid. Friendly to her co-workers, and popular with customers.

Tenchou
VA: Tomoyo Kurosawa (Kumiko from Hibike, Phos from Houseki no Kuni)

Dirt-bag manager of Ton Tokoton. Cares about the café, in her own way.

Fun fact:

The word "Meido" (冥途) in the title is a play on words, where the kanji means "underworld," and is pronounced the same as "maid" in Japanese pronunciation.
I love Japanese wordplay!!!

Tenchou is so loving funny, even if she is a piece of poo poo. I'm glad the girls didn't have to sell off their organs. Also another good bit was the 'fuwafuwa white' club's neon sign flickering to fuaito club. Which is what you think it is if you sound it out.

That's really good. Have there been other homages in the previous episodes? I haven't noticed it because I'm usually too busy laughing.

Tenchou shoving a cup of tea along with plate down her trousers when called on cements her as the funniest person in the show IMO.

Literally every laugh out loud moment in the episode involved her. She's great. I especially liked Shiipon changing her mind about leaving.

It'd be fun if the supervisor eventually sees the light and joins the pigsty. The show seems to paint her somewhat sympathetically despite her being the enforcer of a horrendously abusive work culture, and she's the first real antagonist who hasn't ended up either dead or recruited.

I thought The roof-toss was actually the perfect metaphor, just not in the intended way. "Look! Look how I will hurt myself to protect you!" and left unsaid was 'from the situation I also put you into'

so ranko was in jail for most of the time in between the opening scene and joining the pigsty? presumably for doing incredible amounts of murder? is there any remnant of her maid cafe from that time in the 99 akiba scene? i need more context for how significant that whole set of killings in 85 was within the broader maid cafe power struggle to situate my understanding of where ranko fits on the scale of tragic dupe of a code meant to benefit bosses versus hard nosed soldier who knows what she is

I are an intellekshool.
Given Ranko's line this episode about how she "only wants to protect this café," I'm pretty sure her old workplace was the Oinky Doink. Or whatever the Oinky Doink used to be before Creatureland got their hands on it.

I had no idea what this show was until last night. Walked in on my friend watching it during I think episode 2 while everyone is going to a casino to gamble. All I saw was a group of people failing to understand how to walk away, everyone being a maid even in their off hours, and them getting further conned during the Moe Moe poker game. Right when I'm trying to figure out how they are going to get out of alaskan crab fishing Ranka just caps a fool and walks out then all hell breaks loose.

I watched every episode after that with him this show is amazing. Ranka and Panda are the GOAT.

If a syndicate mismanages their high-quality maids like that, then it brought itself down.

Joking aside, if Kemonoland sent a decorator and motivational speaker instead of an enforcer, and paid attention to their other franchises to notice things like "This maid is killing people who share her birthday" they'd be a more successful, less soulless group.

I get the vibe that they knew and didn't care. Monopolising your birthday is a privilege for the highest earners.

I'm presuming she'll end up being a major antagonist, though possibly the sort who can be redeemed with the power of friendship rather than the power of a .45 to the skull.

Suggesting a birthday celebration when a ruthless serial killer's birthday was coming around was a little bit sus of her, for a start.

Yeah I really thought that she was like... farming lambs' blood or something. Ton Tokoton should adopt the lamb and become the farm cafe.

It's gonna turn out she's actually part of a cop aligned Maid Cafe and will offer to rescue Nogami from the life of being a Maid in exchange for information to take down Kemonoland.

Considering the ongoing tone of this show I too am just waiting for the other shoe to drop and the nice advice giving maid from another organization will turn out to be purposefully giving bad advice.

I figure the nice maid is going to end up being sent to kill, like the one from ep 1 killing Ranko's cafe boss. Also guessing that assassin maid is in the panda suit because why not. Basically this will all end in tears (or Ranko will become the new head maid yakuza boss)

Thread subtitle remains appropriate, because Ranko is the inverse of Kiryu. Powerful, serious, loyal, recently out of prison, keen interest in maid cafes. The only difference between the two is that Kiryu never kills any of his opponents.

Even better, she's using the Oinky Doinks to handle matters that the police can't for various reasons. Like "This serial killer is too well protected by Creatureland's corruption to be dealt with. Let's get the pig ladies to do it for us."

They have a pretty good record so far as long as the problem can be solved with murder.
