I'm not financially literate enough to verify this outside of articles and Twitter speculation, but it looks like it may have taken some other insulin producers with it thanks to the energized discussion around insulin pricing!

Imagine being the majestic bastard who spent $8 on a joke tweet that hit so hard it did splash damage to the whole hosed up market.

Twitter replies seem confident - although I haven't seen a source - that Trump can't actually return to the platform due to contractual obligations with Truth Social.

No, they converted some spare conference rooms into bedrooms to support their new "hardcore" working style under Musk. This was done pretty openly.

The Musk collective's rebuttal has been to shriek about kids dosing on discarded fentanyl because in modern society we can only focus on one thing at a time.

Someone mentioned that in another thread or earlier in this one and I'm pretty sure that sort of thing will come as the platform becomes more prominent. Discord already embeds them and if Twitter continues this trajectory, presumably other platforms will implement support as well.

Feels a bit like a running theme in his life that he'd rather delete a post than give someone else credit for anything.

The damage was done when the journalists were banned in the first place. Can't wait to see if anything comes from the other stupid things he did during his latest tantrum.

I don't think Mastodon's structure will ever support it being a complete replacement for a network like Twitter - that was doomed in the public eye as soon as the sign up process became more involved than just registering an account and finding your nearest trans person to verbally abuse.

I'm one of those tech / FOSS weirdos in their target market though so I'm happy enough. :v:

I wrapped it in snark but yeah, I wasn't joking. Twitter got big because it was a place where you could touch the previously celestial celebrities with no prerequisite decisions or critical thought.

I just really enjoy how insecure he is about Twitter. He's clearly embarrassed that he had to buy it because he doesn't know how to make it successful. He won't go hands off and let it just exist because it's not profitable enough (and was never going to be) and everything he tries just seems to make everyone angrier at him.

This is such a lovely article. I'm having trouble even really articulating how badly it misrepresents Mastodon and its devs. Their linked evidence about "hiding CSAM" is literally just a project issue where they're discussing how to avoid caching that exact objectionable content from other servers that they can't control.

I can't even argue that they're coming from a lack of understanding because there's a reasonably well done article on the same site that discusses Mastodon's / the fediverse's structure with a clear understanding of it.

Teratrain

I think the issue being pitched is the interconnectivity of Mastodon meaning that you are on the same "network" as the posters of objectionable content, but that's a weak-rear end tenuous link made by an article that seems to have a fairly overt agenda against the network.

Yeah, I don't think anything is ever likely to directly fill Twitter's niche in the form of a cataclysmic exodus. You'll see tailored solutions like Mastodon crop up and probably develop user bases in specific areas, but the public slime mold will mostly just stick to Twitter until either all the interesting celebrities have left for Instagram or some other service, or they've been nickel-and-dimed out of enough QoL to not want to use the service any more.

I still have Facebook that I haven’t posted anything on in years, and I check it occasionally. The recommended videos that take up half your feed now are mostly craft videos. They’re labeled 5-minute crafts despite involving tons of tools now one has any access too.

Not sure if these are the specific ones you're getting, but 5 Minute Crafts is a content farm brand name notorious for its absolutely disgusting clickbaiting tactics on videos aimed at kids. There's little to no quality control, many of their crafts are staged and entirely impossible and in the worst cases they're actively dangerous.

I've followed Ann Reardon on YouTube for a few years now, she started off with some awesome debunking videos targeted at 5 min crafts and their ilk, and eventually spiraled into her and her husband leading entire investigative arcs into the shady as gently caress businesses behind the channels.

She has some actual academic credentials and often goes into proper chemical / biological detail in the videos.

If I'm not mistaken, the traction she got from the debunking videos helped get her cookbook published so I guess there's an inadvertent social media success story hidden in there. :3:

It's just a very satisfying misread to watch play out; the world's most divorced man spends months openly whittling down the public perception of the flawed but ultimately meaningful verification system, then gets approximately a thousandth of the original userbase to re-adopt because he's gone to such lengths openly polarizing the product.

Twitter's big appeal for the general populace was always an effectively level playing field to communicate with big name celebs, so the owner openly alienating that crowd makes me laugh because it's probably the worst thing you could do for the site's long-term relevance.

The only real value I can see in BlueSky is potentially fracturing Twitter's userbase further with a design spec and leadership that appeals to Musk's libertarian techbro orbit.

It's also likely to trigger another case of Musk embarrassing himself by trying to block it or deplatform it on Twitter, so I will absolutely be getting an account to add to my Twitter bio and never use as soon as possible.

This whole saga really does have the energy of disgruntled posters on big internet forums starting their own Invision / phpBB boards back in the 2000s to compete with a bigger forum that wronged them, except the bigger forum's owner keeps reacting to them in the most self-sabotaging ways possible.

Is Discord really that massive a thing? (Not that it matters if it's self-destructing through bone-headed management decisions.)

It's very much the default service people use to keep in touch with between video game communities. It's been a pretty safe assumption in the last few years that anyone I've met in a game that I want to keep in touch with outside of the game has a Discord account.

It's pretty much the main way my group of friends keeps in touch because we can easily have a bunch of channels to talk and share stuff in. Thus, the service being run into the ground by shithead former Meta execs is really loving sad.

Discord servers replacing websites as game knowledge repositories sucks, but it's a huge misdirection of blame to say that Discord is at fault for it. gently caress, blame Fandom/Wikia or whatever the hell it is these days for being so gratuitously ad-infested that it barely functions as a website any more, that poo poo was a decent middle ground between custom websites and GameFAQs walkthroughs.

I will confess that I find Discord impossible to figure out. I added a bunch of channels back when there were concerns that SA would shut down. The UI is festooned with alerts and notifications that never take me to the right place, I can't clear most of them, and sometimes I can't even tell what channel I'm in. I'm often left or right clicking on UI elements hoping for a certain response that I usually don't get.

There's some kind of chat program paradigm shift that I missed out on that's left me behind.

There are definitely too many notifications on by default, but I think that's a legacy from its original scope as a comms app for smaller gaming circles. Bigger servers are especially bad for this if they're not strict with mass pings so most people tend to disable notifications and only specifically re-enable them for things they care about hearing quickly.

Discord seems to want to be much more, and I guess I kind of resent the assumption that I'm already all plugged into it.

There are plenty of critiques about the scope of Discord to be made but I think calling Vent and TS "simple" hugely downplays how much less user friendly they were.

It has some social media-adjacent features but the lack of a central global "feed" of any kind means it doesn't sit in the same niche as social media services with attention-based economies.

Honestly, for the most part, it's just a group chat I use with my friends that has voice chat we can drop in and out of as needed.

I'm happy to support Bluesky for now, not for the sake of Jack or because I actually want a short-form social media platform, but because its existence dilutes the pool and brings the internet closer to the critical mass where people just go "I can't be bothered with all these competing platforms" and stop using the sites altogether.
