Oh I did not realize there was a social media thread on these dead forums. I've been laughing at Twitter today.

Yeah that’s what I’ve been saying. All you have to do is load up the front page and scroll down and it’ll make hundreds of API requests just like that. After a few minutes you’re done.

Clarste posted:Also, well, Twitter was probably losing money in the first place, before he said he'd buy it for the funny weed number, and then once the courts said that, no, you can't take back your signature on the contract just because you were doing a bit, he found himself on the hook for a huge amount of money, and of course Twitter is still bleeding money. So part of it's just that he wants to leave his mark on it, yes, but the other part of it is him desperately looking for a way to monetize it. Which is both impossible and also he's pretty stupid so his ideas are below average. I’ve also read rumors about how he didn’t actually want to buy Twitter at all but instead was looking to sell off Tesla shares without tanking its value. But well, the courts said lol no you signed it and he wasn’t willing to fight it in court for whatever reason. Of course this is all just hearsay and prolly wrong on many counts but it’s hilarious if true.

Didn't realize it was the site freaking out on the backend and that I'd be locked out. Yeah and apparently if you just leave the tab open the site will continuously attempt to phone home and failing, so it just does it again and again and again causing the site to self-DDOS itself. Does anyone have a Blind app account and can see what Twitter employees are saying these days? I’m convinced based on zero evidence that the only employees left at Twitter fall into two camps: (1) True Believers who worship Elon’s every word because he can do no wrong, and (2) foreigners on a work visa who are forced to yes-man and do everything Elon says because they’re worried about being fired and deported. I just feel like everyone not in one of those camps already moved on to another company because why would you stay?

I remember when Apple made a big deal about how they were bringing emojis to the iPhone. IIRC nobody outside of Japan used or even heard of emojis, but selling a phone in Japan without emojis was a non-starter so they had to implement it if they wanted Japanese people to buy iPhones.

Popete posted:I was gonna ask, is Threads a legit contender to Twitter? I can't imagine wanting to go from Twitter to a Meta product lol It’s the most serious contender to Twitter, but whether or not it succeeds remains to be seen. What Threads has that the other Twitter contenders (Mastodon, Bluesky) don’t have are users. Every Instagram user can tap a button and now they’re on Threads. Pretty much every single celebrity and influencer is already on Instagram so now they’re on Threads too. Instagram is also “cool” (as in, people actually use it/want to use it, unlike Facebook which everyone knows is for boomers) so a lot of people from all generations already have an account and can jump into Threads too. Mastodon has its confusing signup process, which yes many people see this is a feature not a bug, but the average person looking for a Twitter clone doesn’t want to deal with choosing the right instance to register on. People often compare this to signing up for email and how everyone figured it out so what’s the problem here? Well the problem is that people signing up for a social media app don’t see it the same way as signing up for email. And also when people sign up for emails these days it’s overwhelming gmail or insert local country provider like GMX for Germany (unless that’s changed by now). Bluesky isn’t even launched yet and you need an invite code to get in.

The major thing going against it right now is that Threads isn’t going to be released in the EU anytime soon presumably because of data collection and privacy laws.

Someone explain why removing blocking is a bad thing? In this hypothetical scenario, if Elon blocked me then I wouldn’t be able to see anything he tweeted unless I logged out of my account, at which point I would see everything he tweeted. I guess I don’t see how this feature even makes sense at all because I can bypass someone blocking me by just logging out? I feel like I should always be able to see tweets from people regardless of whether they’ve blocked me or not. If I don’t want to see them, then the onus should be on me to block them on my account. No?

People get outraged when an app that they use every day charges $1, $3, $5 a year to use it, especially when it used to be free. $0.01 would prolly cause more outrage cause then you’d get the people saying “why not just make it free”. But it’ll surely generate a lot of news so… I expect Twitter to make this change the next time Musk has a story he wants to drown out.

Been seeing a relatively new style of advertisement (to me anyway) on my Instagram feed lately. It’s always a 2 picture/video post. The first video/picture is something I like like a kitten or a house plant or something. You watch it and then scroll to the next video in the series expecting to see more of your new best cat friend video but surprise! It’s an advertisement for a vacuum cleaner.

When Apple/Google was introducing "computational photography" to the mainstream people were talking about how they were worried that future generations wouldn't have access to real pictures of animals and plants anymore because everything will have been edited to look better, have colors pop, etc. Glad that's not going to be an issue going forward since everything will just be fake.

And we know he was a nazi because his shirt literally said "Waffen SS" on it but with the runes instead of S, and it had 88 written in big numbers. It got removed for violating some policy lol.

Guy I work with complains about having to use his phone for 2FA to log into office 365 all the time. He forgets his phone at home like once a week at least. He'd rather just have a dedicated key fob for 2FA that can be lost instead of a phone that everyone has with them 24/7 but he's also a boomer.

I just use 1Password to generate my work 2FA codes though. I already use 1Password as my personal password/2fa manager so it's literally something I already use. iOS's built in password manager now does 2FA and I'm assuming Android's default version does too, if you don't want an app. I'd understand your guy's opinions on this if this required a dedicated app but it doesn't and this way doesn't give work IT any access to your device either. You just scan a QR code in your 2FA app and it's set up.

Waffles Inc. posted:The issue is that because of that TFA requirement, the company de facto requires that you have a contemporary smartphone even if you don’t require one for your actual duties, but wouldn’t pay for you to have one if you didn’t have one, and that’s “you have you buy your own uniforms” level of really stupid Company is an engineering company. Everyone that needs to log into office 365 are computer touchers. I think it's safe to assume the venn diagram of engineers that use a computer to do work and doesn't have a smartphone are two separate circles. Company also supplies laptops and poo poo to employees. I'm sure that for the 1 edge case that somehow doesn't have a phone they will make an exception. It's seriously a non issue. I'm not talking about being forced to sign into Office 365 and having to install work apps here. Literally just opening up your password manager that you should already be using in your personal life to scan a QR code or enter a code sequence to set up your 2FA and doesn't give the IT department any access to your phone. You guys would rather have to remember to carry a physical fob with you every day to work to generate a 2FA code to login to Office 365 once a day. Instead of just using the phone that's already in your hands the moment you sit down at your computer? Again I'm talking about using either the built-in password manager or password manager of your choice, not a dedicated app, and doesn't require giving your IT access to your device because it's entirely offline.
