This is a megathread focused on the challenge of playing golf games without ever changing your aim, battling the wind head first. We're not going to let a little nature get in the way of the time honored tradition of putting ball in hole.

Many golf games are to be played, and anyone can join! If you've never done VLP, this is a chance to try!

---The Requirements:---
- The game of choice must feature wind, (the higher possible, the better.)
- You cannot rotate your character, but you can do anything else (slice/hook, change stances or clubs, shoot high/low, apply backspin, etc)
- VLP or SSLP of any kind is fine, the only goal is to get as good a score as possible while never changing from the predefined aim direction the game gives you.
- You can post all attempts, or only the best scores- we're having fun here.
- Embrace the chaos!

Bonus points if you speedrun it! How many points, I don't know. I don't even know what the points are for in this case. I haven't decided on a prize. Should there be a prize?

Anyways, feel free to compete against other LPer's scores if you want!

If you have a similar challenge (or just a really obscure golf game you want to show off,) we might just be able to fit that into the thread as well.

-----------------------------------

Neo Turf Masters (or the lesser name for it, Big Tournament Golf,) was originally released in the arcades of 1996 by Nazca. Outside of the gorgeous visuals and jamming tunes, Neo Turf was a dedicated coin eater at arcades with it's snappy controls and punishing courses... and that isn't even mentioning how the continue system works!

It continues that coin eating legacy today by getting frequently ported to many consoles.

This is also a game where the audience freaks out every time the ball touches anything that's not fairway, so expect to hear them throwing a fit in the background with this.

I'll be running through all 5 courses the game has to offer, Germany, Japan, USA, Australia on the excellent Switch arcade port, then going off to the NeoGeo CD release to show off the hellscape that is the exclusive hidden course, Scotland.

Each course I'll show a different golfer, so that we get the full dad bod experience and to keep up the challenge- I'd play Thomas Stewart each map otherwise. I'll try to do some better runs on the NGCD version, then it's off to Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf, which is kind of like this game, but more complicated to control and also on the NES.

My Runs:

Germany, Baden National Golf Course
Run 1, Difficulty 8, Robert Landolt: Final Score = +30

Japan, Fujiyama Oriental Golf Club
Run 1, Difficulty 8, Toshige Takeno: Final Score = +18

USA, Grand Canyon Golf Course
Run 1, Difficulty 8, Fernando Almeida: Final Score = +25

Australia, Blue Lagoon Golf Course
Run 1, Difficulty 8, Frank Adams: Final Score = +22

Scotland, Edinburgh Old Links
Run 1, Difficulty 8, Thomas Stewart: Final Score = +26

Japan, Fujiyama Oriental Golf Club
Run 2, Difficulty 8, George Spinner: Final Score = +3 :toot:

Time for a new game!

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2005 is a game that came out for a bunch of platforms, but we're playing on the GameCube.

Somehow, this is literally the entire text on Wikipedia about this game. It's kinda crazy. Anyway, this game is notable for having a bunch of crazy characters, and we're going to want to use quite a few of them, so oldskool and I will be playing a total of five rounds of golf in this game, going through 9 holes each time.

For the first video, we take the front nine on Emerald Dragon, a custom built Japanese golf course. Once again, technical issues rear their head because of my incompetence, but they don't take too long to figure out, and at least I don't lose the entire audio track this time.

We return to Pebble Beach, this time with significantly worse weather. Also, we have significantly nicer graphics and significantly worse swings.

We needed a tiebreaker, and so we take Justin Timberlake and Justin Timberlake's Cool Golf OC Do Not Steal to Paradise Cove and play in the sand for all the marbles.

-----------------------------------

Dipping all the way back to 1988, Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf (known as just "Fighting Golf" in Japan) for the NES and Famicom is probably SNK's first golfing game and a distant ancestor of Neo Turf Masters.

Nes Trev Masters, if you will.

The game features only two 18 hole courses, 4 golfers of varying stats, and not a large soundtrack, but remains a surprisingly quality game. As expected for a game personally endorsed by a big name golfer like Craig Stadler. It's not Craig Stadler though, it's Lee Trevino.

It's also quite difficult, as is to be expected. I've also never really played it before so this'll be a disaster without aiming!

My Runs:

U.S.A
Attempt 1, Pretty Amy, Final Score: +44

Japan
Attempt 1, Miracle Chosuke, Final Score: +46

I don't feel quite so bad about my first attempt now. I only did slightly worse than +30. Honestly, I'm a bit surprised that you had such a rough go of that. I figured the one-button shot power and more simplistic gameplay of a Neo Geo title would make things a bit easier.

Anyway, I have a run on PGA 2K21 that I am working on. I was hoping to post it today, but that was before I realized that I needed to learn how to blur a bunch of poo poo out of video. 2K21 has my PSN ID plastered everywhere and also shows off my friends list when I open the options menu. Neo Turf's just a challenging game in it's own right, let alone when you ramp up the difficulty to highest for unpredictable wind. It asks for really tight precision and estimation, and also really just wants your money.

This score is awful compared to the first test run I did, I think I was only at +16 then, somehow. My following runs from this session do get better, but they're not that good.

There's a certain level of challenge added by the fact my recording setup for modern games is atrocious and I'm playing a Switch game off a CRT absolutely not intended for HD ratios, so it was kinda hard to even see what the height meter was doing. In hindsight, I probably should've just emulated the Wii digital release, but I don't think not outright missing the ball would've saved me more than 3 points anyways. Embrace the chaos, embrace the jank! :v:

I'm expecting to do a lot better on the CD version... well, Scotland aside. I'll still probably inevitably choke some hole and tank my score as I usually do in this game, but maybe my placement won't be at the absolute bottom.

I've had this video recorded and even had the audio cleaned up for a while now, but I've spent the last few days dealing with upload issues.

Yeah, I tried three games with this ruleset for a bit and it's pretty clear that the wind is maybe the third most difficult obstacle to face, being outmatched by both trees and the green.

I recorded a full round of Mario Golf: Advance Tour and my video file corrupted :negative:

It wasn't a super-interesting round tbh; Advance Tour's default aiming picks the best landing spot from where you're currently at, so you don't have the Neo Turf issue of aiming 20 yards out of bounds & having to try to slice your way into playable ground. Plus it's just generally a far more forgiving game. Probably a good palate cleanser though!

I did not expect it, but you're right, trees and green are hell. I basically get softlocked in some places in Neo Turf if my shot goes wrong. It's really odd, because that random test run did before deciding on taking this up only had issues with wind and not much else.

Still a good thread title though, I'm not changing it.

This sounds like some insane difficulty, I forgot that this was only 9 holes! Neo Turf's all 18 hole courses.

I'll go ahead and track this in the OP if that's alright with you, keep it easy for viewers to find new updates.

Edit: Oh, that control scheme is just brutal on it's own! You've definitely got the harder game here.

I've gotta work on getting my next update cleaned up, I think I figured out an alright workflow for it on the first video. For some reason my mic recording had picked up some odd dead signaling on my first recording, which has never happened before. I found a way to patch it out though.

It's definitely not a fun day on the green. In order to get a straight shot, you pretty much have to hold the analog stick with your thumb and index finger and go at it from whatever angle you think will cause your hand to move the least Up/Down or Left/Right. The swing timing is also a pain in the rear end. I can never figure out the proper way to make it work.

I might try my next run in Hot Shots Golf 2 if I get some free time. I know that Everybody's Golf is out there, but I don't have a copy of that one (yet).

Side Note: I would love to see somebody try a version of this challenge in a VR title like Everybody's Golf VR. Maybe it could involve not being allowed to look down the fairway before you swing, you just have to look down at the ball and go ham.

The News's Report: Takeno Challenges The Japan Fujiyama Oriental

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98a04I-hNC8

Difficulty 8, Final Score: + 18

Part 2 of the first recording session, this one goes better than the last, but not that much better. Japan is a trickier course, and one that especially loves WATER HAZARD. But hey, the saxophone makes it all good.

Toshige Takeno goes deep on putting, with the title of Putt Master, but it's a bit too much into it for me. I've always had trouble sinking the final shot with him as the meter is at it's most granular. I prefer a more average putting ability, but I suppose there are times when an extremely skilled hand could use it to clutch birdies.... if they could aim.

Winning on the green in this challenge is more about lining up straight shots with your initial hit in.

I have recorded the dreaded SCOTLAND, and I won't spoil you on how it goes. I did an extra run on NeoCD Turf Masters to show off Japan's soundtrack, and that one was rather unexpected in how it ended. What I will tell you is that I did a run of U.S.A in the between those but dropped it because I was running a negative score to the halfway point and then totally tanked it. The Wilson Special :v:

I might finish off a full world tour on Neo Geo CD, but it'll probably be for managing the best score I can.

I know I'm not that good at it yet, but I am enjoying this casual VLP thing. I've got an idea of what I'd need to do for a more serious affair, but for now, this isn't too bad on my hand strain and that's great. Just get to play some golf and it's an update.

(even if I still misfire each session with about 5 runs of immediately being at a loss for words because if there's one thing I'm bad at, it's improv)

Yeah, I was watching a speedrun of Toadstool Tour for Gamecube, and I was thinking: "all these games auto aim you towards the hole; if you never rotated the player, how much harder does the game become?"

You still have all your clubs, topspin/backspin, and you can hook and slice, but now the wind is even more of a factor (since you can't turn into it to have the wind work in your favor), and environmental obstacles/course layout can become a serious hindrance. :v:

StupidSexyMothman

did some quick checking and both Takeno & Landolt have 32 bars on a 36m max putt, for 1.125m (like 4.5 feet) per bar; hence why it's ironically so difficult to putt accurately with them.
The weird thing is Takeno is ostensibly the better putter but feels like his bar goes faster than Landolt's?

The other characters have very different putting bars.

In hindsight, I should've called this the Facetious Challenge. I hope you're enjoying the chaos so far!

I can say I feel like I'm getting a lot better at Neo Turf for doing this, intentionally removing one part of the factors in making a shot requires you to really start understanding the other mechanics at play fully. Removing the easiest mechanic is a bit trial by fire, but it kinda just works out.

That's some good info! There's some rare cases where a long putt is going to ask for an exact power level to not clip the hole, but I feel like those are outweighed by all the other shots you'll be making from otherwise easy ranges.

The bar speed I believe is measured by the Accuracy/Precision stat, which is Landolt's maxed stat. Takeno has only 2 points in that, which is why his meters are faster. Landolt's specific challenge is that his Technique (high/low ability, hook/slice ability) is low as well as his Stamina/Recovery (reduces the effects of non-fairway terrain). If you never gently caress up a shot, he's excellent, but it's a struggle to get out of rough situations. Having played through all the available courses on my side, I think Landolt may be required to not fail out on some holes, just for the improved Driving/Power- there's some shots you just have to have a longer drive on, and the challenge overall goes up with less Tech and Recovery.

Takeno is really just about making it into the hole from anywhere on the green (provided you can aim).

It's also worth noting that the stats aren't really even either.
Total Stats:
Spinner - 15
Stewart - 18
Adams - 14
Landolt - 17
Almeida - 9
Takeno - 16

I already main Stewart so I didn't need any more reasons to, but I guess I have another.

The News's Report - Almeida Slams Bunkers In the USA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S56CL-s1x-c

Difficulty 8, Final score: + 25

Part 3 of the initial recording session, only 1 more left until we get to Scotland. This one was... atrocious. Final score wasn't bad compared to Germany, but it could've been way better.

Fernando Almeida only has 1 skill, driving. The man can hit longest drive contests the most reliably, but suffers in every other aspect. Poor control, fast meters, awful recovery... but drat can the man hit an albatross on a good day. All this said, he is good fun when you can aim. If you want the best possible scores, it's a choice between him or Landolt.

Given the requirements of this challenge, Almeida's a terrible choice, but I had to show him off at some point to be fair- there isn't a Brazil course.

I'll maybe revisit USA at some point, I think I could get a really good score here.

StupidSexyMothman
Aug 9, 2010

Almeida's 16 putting notches means each one is 2.25m, just under 7.5 feet, just under double the distance Takeno & Landolt's notches represent. Hence why missing by one notch up or down can wildly affect where your putt goes, especially when you can't account for the grain or terrain.

That said, drat is it satisfying to belt one 300+ :black101: Doubly so if it ends up somewhere playable!

I love the look on this dude's face. That's the look of not knowing what the hell you are doing in a given situation, but you've got bills to pay so gently caress it.

He just perpetually has this look of mild surprise and it's great.

The News's Report: Adams Meets Fierce Opposition In Australia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cacMCvhpoNM

Difficulty 8, Final Score: +22

I was a bit disappointed with said score at the end, but it ain't bad. This one was a rollercoaster of emotions, in no short part to it being around 2 AM and the end of a long consecutive recording session.

Frank Adams isn't a guy I play a often, but I can't really complain about his skill setup. He might not hit that far, but he's one of the few golfers who can play from Water Hazard and in general is very good at recovering a bad shot into something workable. In other words, he's mostly the perfect choice for this challenge. His driving leaves some to be desired though, and if anything, Australia proves we need driving.

Up next, the dreaded Scotland, Edinburgh Old Links. :getin:

that 3 wood out of the bunker on 7 :stare: hell of a shot, even if the round did sort of go off the rails almost immediately afterward.

Adams is good at what he does :)

I should really play him more.

Well, turns out the 3DO version doesn't have Craig Stadler, so it's basically worthless. So speaking of the now officially superior Saturn version, here's part two:

We take on the second half of the front nine, and get wet.

It's a no-deal if you don't get to get wet with the Walrus

Stadler makes up for all the framerate in the world

I'll add it to the list! Lee Trevino's Fighting Golf is gonna be a pretty short playthrough for me, it's only two courses so I'm open to picking up more golf games to try this on.

The News's Report: Stewart Had A Bad Day In Scotland

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyXauDddvC0

Difficulty 8, Final Score: +26

The dreaded links are here. Sandy, wet, and plastered in rough in the real world, it is translated to the hardest course Turf Masters has to offer. The gloves are off, and while we may no longer be at an arcade machine, SNK is out for your soul. Without being able to aim, this course only gets worse...

Thomas Stewart is usually the golfer I play, most notable for his ability to make extremely high or low shots and slow and precise meters. This comes at the cost of driving power, but with the one of the highest stat totals in the game he won't let you down.

We've got one last showing to come for now- will we become a Turf Master or will we fade away into obscurity in 32th place forever?

It's time to start with the back nine. Craig continues to run away with the score.

The News's Report: Spinner Defies Expectation in Japan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sCSLX67xB7U

Difficulty 8, Final Score: +3

It must've been a real bad day for the poor sap in 32th.

Hell of a run right here, a real rollercoaster.

There's not a lot to say about Spinner, being a jack of all trades and all. With no specialty, he merely gets the job done. And in the end, it seems that's all we needed.

I feel like I've done good enough with the golfer dads now, so it's off to Lee Trevino's FIGHTING GOLF next. I may return to this in the future, but I've got other games to try out. You should look up the NeoGeoCD version of Germany's music though, it's a bop.

Huh, that is bizarre. Why is the Germany music from the arcade version playing in Japan in the CD version? Did they change up the BGMs just for the gently caress of it or something?

The track from this video is the one that keeps the CD version from being a slam dunk superior OST to me. The loving General MIDI instrument #54 doots are just too distracting to me.
