We had not left it yet, but when I would wake in the night, I would lie, listening, homesick for it already.

:siren:SENEGAL:siren:

Senegalese football is in a pretty good place going into this tournament. They are a team that has slowly been growing together and following their victory at the 2021 African Cup of nations will be looking to go deep into this tournament. They have a team full of players that are starters in the top leagues in Europe and would get into any team attending Qatar. Their manager is unchanged since 2015 and that stability has paid off with a team that has real shot of making it to the semi finals at this tournament, the players are full of confidence and with the quality the team has can legitimately got toe to toe with any other 'big' names in internal football

Could they go all the way?

Unlikely but it wouldn't be the most shocking result of a major international tournament.

The Squad
Manager: Aliou Cissé

Goalkeepers: Seny Dieng, Alfred Gomis, Edouard Mendy

Defenders: Pape Abdou Cissé, Abdou Diallo, Ismail Jakobs, Kalidou Koulibaly, Formose Mendy, Youssouf Sabaly, Fodé Balo Touré

Midfielders: Pathé Ciss, Krepin Diatta, Idrissa Gana Gueye, Pape Gueye, Cheikhou Kouyate, Mamadou Loum, Nampalys Mendy, Moustapha Name, Pape Matar Sarr

Forwards: Boulaye Dia, Bamba Dieng, Nicolas Jackson, Sadio Mané, Iliman Ndiaye, Ismaila Sarr, Famara Diedhiou

Highlights

Edouard Mendy

Chelsea's first choice keeper, displacing Kepa Arrizabalaga who was a world record transfer fee for a goalkeeper. An undoubedtly world class player who'd have a decent shot at getting into any of the teams at this tournament

Kalidou Koulibaly

A versatile ball playing defender who, if needed, can switch it up almost anywhere across the back line or even as a defensive midfielder. He captains the side to it's assured first world cup final

Sadio Mane

An absolute superhero in senegal. Many people proclaimed Mo Salah as the best African player to ever play in the premier league. Following Sadio Mane's sale to Bayern Munich it rapidly became clear salah hadn't even been the best african player in his team. Mane is a lethal forward and one of the best players from the continent of all time. He'd be plenty of managers first choice if they could have him in their teams and is sure to blast many golazzos into the upper 90

The Fans
If you want to jam the gently caress out then senegal is the team for you. Their fans are one of the liveliest in international football and were a big highlight of the last world cup

They also do cool poo poo like shine lasers in the eyes of rival players when they're trying to take a penalty

Stance on Qatar

Group
Qatar
Ecuador
Netherlands

They should easily get out of this group and coming top or not will depend on their game against the Netherlands on Monday

quote:

Such was the panic caused by the injury, Senegalese senior executive Fatma Samoura admitted her country were willing to go to the extent of using witch doctors to help heal their star player.

She told French radio station Europe 1: “We are going to use witch doctors.

“I don’t know [if they’re effective] but in this instance, we’re going to use them anyway.

“We are hoping for miracles. He has to be there!”

Keep at it.

Hope they didn’t use Pogba’s. Mane deserves better than that.

Has anyone been watching friendlies and so on, to know whether Pape Matar Sarr is likely to see any real time? He's supposedly a top prospect in CM for Spurs.

Bad news my fellow Senegalese super fans. Looks like Mané is not going to be available for the key match against the pancake merchants

So did the witch doctor not help? Or did it help but there are limits to their power. World may never know.

Things in football that are 100% real:

-witch doctors
-curses

You gotta shop around for witch doctors, don't just go for the first one you see on google

The answer is, mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us. In the psychological battle stakes, we are stripped down and ready to go. I want to see those ashen-faced performances; I want more of them. I want to be encouraged. I want to see you squirm.

Senegal still in the hunt for a knockout berth thanks to their comprehensive 3-1 thrashing of host nation Qatar today, which also guarantees the Qataris will have the worst showing of any World Cup host ever and almost certainly makes them only the second host nation ever to not make the knockout stage. Lions of Teranga... thank you.
