Ghana is a country in Africa, this bit specifically:

Their football team are known as the Black Stars, named after the black star on their flag:

which is in turn derived from the Black Star Line, Marcus Garvey's pan-African anti-colonialist shipping company. Fairly loving cool thing to put on your flag and name your football team after if you ask me.

Historically, in the years before football was invented in 1992, the Ghanaian national team chugged along fairly unremarkably. Notable players included Abedi 'Pele' Ayew (more on him later) and this guy:

Tony Yeboah arrived at Leeds United in 1995, scored 32 goals in 66 games, all volleys from outside the area, and left as abruptly as he arrived. He is the spirit of football made flesh and I will not be entertaining any arguments about this. Moving on

GREAT MOMENTS IN GHANAIAN WORLD CUP HISTORY

2006

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Z1kTuU9yA4

Dramatic scenes as Ghana qualify for the World Cup Finals for the first time. They lost 2-0 to Shitaly in their first game, before beating Czech Republic and the USA (lol) to get through to the knockout round, where they got promptly thumped 3-0 by Brazil. Football is cruel sometimes.

2010

You wanna talk about golden generations, this Ghana team is about as golden as it gets. A core of top European players in their prime (both Ayew brothers, Muntari, Essien, Kevin-Prince Boateng, Mensah, Appiah and of course 'Baby Jet' Asamoah Gyan) came to the first World Cup in Africa with high expectations. They got out of their group on goal difference, and beat the United States in the first knockout round (lol again) to set up a quarter final against Uruguay.

If you don't know the outcome of this one get your tissues at the ready cos it's a heartbreaker. TRP favourite and part-time cannibal Luis Suarez took a cynical sending off for handling the ball to prevent a late winner from crossing the line in extra time, Ghana missed the penalty and lost the resulting shootout.

2014

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_JTzEppKy8

Ghana go on strike before their final group game in a row over appearance money, resulting in the president of Ghana flying 3 million dollars in cash out to Brazil to ensure that they met their obligations and lost, earning a single point.

2018

THE GAFFER

Otto Addo, pictured here in his playing days with some nerd. He may be bald but we don't know if he's a fraud yet as this is his first senior management gig and he's only been in the job since February. He was in charge for their final qualifying game against Nigeria where they went through on away goals so technically he has taken Ghana to a world cup which is more than certain other bald managers have done.

THE SQUAD

GK: Lawrence Ati-Zigi (St. Gallen)
GK: Abdul Manaf Nurudeen (Eupen)
GK: Ibrahim Danlad (Asante Kotoko)

DF: Daniel Amartey (Leicester)
DF: Abdul-Rahman Baba (Reading)
DF: Alexander Djiku (Strasbourg)
DF: Joseph Aidoo (Celta Vigo)
DF: Gideon Mensah (Bordeaux)
DF: Denis Odoi (Club Brugge)
DF: Tariq Lamptey (Brighton)
DF: Alidu Seidu (Clermont)
DF: Mohammed Salisu (Southampton)

MF: Mohammed Kudus (Ajax)
MF: Thomas Partey (Arsenal)
MF: Andre Ayew (Al Saad)
MF: Elisha Owusu (Gent)
MF: Daniel-Kofi Kyereh (St Pauli)
MF: Daniel Afriyie Barnieh (Hearts of Oak)
MF: Salis Abdul Samed (Lens)

FW: Antoine Semenyo (Bristol City)
FW: Abdul Fatawu Issahaku (Sporting CP)
FW: Jordan Ayew (Crystal Palace)
FW: Kamaldeen Sulemana (Rennes)
FW: Osman Bukari (Red Star Belgrade)
FW: Felix Afena-Gyan (Roma)
FW: Inaki Williams (Athletic Bilbao)
FW: Kamal Sowah (Club Brugge)

Big Decisions by the manager already, opting to drop Jeffrey Schlupp of Crystal Palace which didn't go down well on Ghanaian Twitter. Ghana have a very young transitional squad for this World Cup, taking a leaf out of the Jack Charlton '94 book and convincing players to play for them. Inaki Williams is not playing for Spain, Denis Odoi is not playing for Belgium, and Tariq Lamptey is not playing for England.

They're in a group with Portugal, Uruguay and South Korea in the group of PUGSk. Tricky, and they'll need some magic from Williams and the Ayew brothers (sons of the aforementioned Abedi Pele) in what must surely be their last tournament. Thomas Partey is also here and that's all we'll say about that. Mohammed Salisu is also supposed to be good apparently. Otherwise quite inexperienced and with an inexperienced manager, but just like Tony Yeboah, all they need is a chance.
