I can say that once I met Squawkabilly I was a little disappointed in myself for blowing the name 'Josuke' on a different bird with elaborate hair.

Not much, though, because I knew I wasn't gonna touch Squawkabilly for longer than it took to catch the thing. That's not even the Pidgey of the generation where it's a bird that generally stacks up over the game, that's the Chatot of the generation where it exists only for a cute gimmick that isn't even combat-useful.

I don’t see why GF keeps making these multi form gimmick mons useless. There’s nothing about Squakabilly having four colors that goes against giving him better stats. Flabebe and Deerling were allowed to be usable. At least he’s not as bad as Spinda and Unown.

Gotta say this is the first time I’ve ever tried much less come close to completing the regional dex. What with getting a consistent stream of actually worthwhile rewards for doing it, GF finally giving in and letting us catch more than a handful of fully evolved lines in the wild, and in an open world with no random encounters making it engaging and quick to do so. Now I just hope they stop making a fourth of the new mons Lvl 60+ postgame only Legendaries/Ultra Beasts/Paradox’s that are essentially multiplayer only.

Still laughing that the there is a grand total of one new duo of version exclusive Pokémon (not counting legends). And it’s technically not even the Pokémon, just the armor item. I suppose I should be glad being that I always exclusively use new/remake region mons and couldn’t care less if some random Gen2 Mon I already used in HGSS isn’t available, but it’s like why even have two versions at that point.
Relatedly does anyone else feel like the finale was supposed to be against the opposite versions box legend and not a random second one? It’s just kinda deflating. In fact the whole finale once you reach the bottom seems totally nonsensical like it was hastily rewritten at the last moment. It almost feels like how DP and XY were obviously written to be replaced by the “real” third version story, but they don’t make third versions anymore.

Not particularly? The 2nd one is there for one simple reason. You need a box legend to be able to trade around and transfer forward. The buddy bike isn't tradeable since that would mean the save file is permanently slowed down due to no transportation option.

See this is makes me more suspicious that it was switched. Like they realized they were between the rock and a hard place of 1: Not being able to travel and use your box legend at the same time, and 2: Letting you catch both which is a big no-no for version sales reasons. So they came up with the awkward solution of “By the way there’s a random second one sitting right over there” which as I said kinda diminishes it by making it just “Paradox Cylizar” instead of a unique/special mon .

Edit: Also let me ride my Cylizar GameFreak. He’s a good boy an deserves it.

Speaking of “rushed” it does seem SV is the reverse of most games where it’s the beginning that seems to be barely functional. I walked off camera in the bedroom. The literal first screen in the whole game broke. And that single digit fps classroom scene at the start. Conversely once I was actually done with the on rails intro everything worked perfectly. Most big games these days put 95% of their dev time into a bombastic first 30 minutes and then just collapse. I will credit GF for actually putting effort into the part of the game that matters. That and it being the best Pokémon game since the DS definitely soothed my frustration.

Obviously Special/Adventure harkening back to its edgelord RSE days, will make it about Arven’s parents messy divorce and subsequent battle to the death over whether dinosaurs or cyborgs are cooler. Their robot doppelgängers are similarly robo-divorced and will spend the whole manga bad mouthing the other to Arven and trying to make him love them more than the other by buying him increasingly fancy sandwiches.

Speaking of Team Star bases was there a way I was “supposed” to be doing them? I just selected the 3 members of my team that had stab/resist to the base’s type and ran around mashing R till it told me I won. I never failed or had anyone faint or need healing or anything. And I was doing all but the last at the recommended levels or under.

If I remember correctly CDPR did at least advertise, when they released 2077 as a flaming pile of garbage, that the first few months were solely focused on bugfixing. I have no idea if they actually did that.

But in all honesty I don't even know if ScarVi even needs to do that, since the bug situation seems to be less 'everything is broken all the time' and more 'there's a memory leak that means things gradually break over the course of a play session'. That's likely a harder problem to fix, but it's also not one that you'd devote an entire financial quarter to fixing.

There’s definitely bugs at the start of the game with broken cameras and single digit fps that has nothing to do with play time.

Every mythical since Gen 6 has just been a normal Pokémon they removed from the dex and gave a bloated 600 bst to. It’s infuriating because I’d like to actually catch and use some of those designs/typings in the game. 99% of players have no use case for a level 70, legendary stat line, un-nicknameable, un-fashionballable, Pokémon.

Terra types is the first and only time I have actually loved the Gen 6+ super saiyan gimmicks. It’s actually fun and interesting from a gameplay perspective because it isn’t just another way of being a straight upgrade, and no Pokémon gets favoritism like gigantomax, unique z moves, or megas period. Plus you can do fun things like give all the traditional “three type” Pokémon their third type. My Poison type Gliscor and Bug type Flygon will soon make you all quake in terror!

I used to keep some boxes of “hard to get” stuff like starters, fossils, porygons, and inconvenient evos, but The last few gens have made getting stuff so much easier and cut down on weird Sinnoh style availability that I don’t feel a need for it any more.

You could easily save Bug by making it resist and be SE against Fairy.

The problem with the Move purge is that it misidentified the problem. It’s not that some of these moves exist (though they did need trimming), but that so many moves that weren’t cut can be learned by so many. No reason every water type should know ice beam for instance. Things like Signal Beam allow mons to have some coverage without just handing out Surf and Thunder to everyone (which just makes op mons more op). Learn sets should be more unique not less. Neither “you get stab and nothing else” nor “you get an 80-100 BP 100 acc move for every type”.

Hidden Power also just can’t work anymore. It’s supposed to be a fun personal identifier for your single player team members that makes them unique. It’s supposed to be “Oh hey my Gastrodon has HP electric!” And being able to squeeze out a random electric attack becomes a fun little thing he can do. Tryhards who want it to be a drop down menu miss the point. By it’s very nature it can’t be balanced if it can be whatever you want on whoever you want whenever you want. And unfortunately breeders, hex editors, and online trading mean that genie can never be put back in the bottle. It was fun but it needs to be put out to pasture.

I had a themed team I wanted to try that used 10% form in a dusk ball but I want him at a level that can actually be used during the actual game. Giving experience for catching has really mucked up the level curve, especially in SV where catching is a way bigger part of the game. In the older gens you could keep the same team of six all game (as in starting with one or two and catching the rest as you went on) repel/run from every single wild encounter, and as long as you fought every trainer you would generally be at the intended level for the next gym. Gens 7&8 you have to basically forgo catching Pokémon to keep your level on the curve (which is bad in a series about catching monsters) And in SV you can’t really do even that because the game now revolves around catching for so many things, so you’re pretty much guaranteed to over level the last third of the game.

Is there any point playing Shining Diamond if I've got a copy of platinum lying around I've yet to get to? Assuming that internet is not a thing I have access to for trading.

Zero reasons reasons related to the actual game. Platinum has a gargantuan amount of extra content over BDSP including, more Pokémon, more and better story, more areas, move tutors, the gen4 Pokémon actually being in the game, better visuals despite being 10 years older (not just having well drawn sprites instead of lowest bidder budget 3D models, but bdsp legit doesn’t have Platinum’s expanded visual asset base) and vastly better music. The only situation in which bdsp would be preferable is if you really want to move mons from it and you don’t have a gen5 game/3DS/Poketransporter/Bank to do it with platinum, since bdsp can connect directly to home.

Pupitar->Tyranitar goes from Rock/Ground to Rock/Dark

Skorupi->Drapion goes from Bug/Poison->Dark/Poison
Eggexcute->AEggexcutor goes from Grass/Psychic to Grass/Dragon

Kirlia->Gallade goes from Psychic/Fairy to Psychic/Fighting
Ninjask->its evos goes from Bug/Ground to Bug/Flying or Bug/Ghost
Fletchling->Fletchinder goes from Normal/Flying to Fire/Flying
Skrelp->Dragelge goes from Water/Poison to Dragon/Poison
Dartrix->its evos goes from Grass/Flying to Grass/Fighting or Grass/Ghost
Scyther->its evos goes from Bug/Flying to Bug/Steel or Bug/Rock

and of course Eevee and Cubone->AMarowak where they change types completely on evo. And Gloom losing Poison on evolution to Bellosom.

none of that is mentioning all the Pokemon that gain a type on evo either, just the ones who change it

There does seem to be a caveat here that most of these aren’t “normal” evolutions. They’re either branched evos, lines retroactively having to work in Fairy type or Steel Type, regional forms, or GameFreak having their weird conniption about putting normal type on what are essentially pure flying type. The only ones that are just regular lines are Masquerain, Tyranitar, Deapion, and Dragalge.

There’s some more Paldea mons i want to do a run with, but I just can’t really get the energy to do it because while SVs changing the focus of the gameplay so it’s about exploring to find new things to catch was refreshing and needed, it really hurts replayability because you already know where everything is and already have one sitting in your boxes. The old games were more about trainer battling and dungeons so while it definitely needed a break after 8 generations (SwSh was dire) it was good for replaying since you got to see how different teams handled it. Like running through USUM with a ghost and psychic type on your team is a unique experience because every drat Pokémon in Alola knows dark moves or is dark itself.
