Ten years ago today, on November 22nd, 2012 over 20 million Americans watched Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez fumble the ball against the New England Patriots in a Thanksgiving Night Game. This play, would forever become known as "the Butt Fumble." The play was part of a 52 second sequence in which the Patriots scored a touchdown on offense, defense and special teams. That sequence started with a wheel route to Shane Vereen. https://i.imgur.com/tg9nZby.mp4 In the Jets ensuing possession, Mark Sanchez turned the wrong way, and unable to hand the ball off, panicked and slid into Brandon Moore's backside. The force of the collision caused Sanchez to fumble the ball. Patriots defensive back Steve Gregory was in the right spot at the right time to grab the ball on the take off untouched for a return touchdown. https://i.imgur.com/gI0o2pv.mp4 Of course, on the kick off following Gregory's score, Joe McKnight fumbled the return and the ball popped into the air directly into the waiting arms of Julian Edelman who easily returned it for yet another Patriots touchdown. The Patriots would go on to win the game by a score of 49-19. On the anniversary of this special day, please enjoy this collection of various Butt Fumble related material. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YB_vYivXWg&t=1s https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnFXMhMBjdk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAQnJdOniCk Sanchez talks about the play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqZM-Xc56G8 Watch the whole game! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nH-uYVvwO0 Little known Butt Fumble fact... it was the only regular season game that Welker and Edelman both caught touchdown passes.

The single greatest sequence of events in world history. Because it’s not just the butt fumble, it’s the two series around the butt fumble of two additional follies committed by the Jets and giving up three touchdowns in like 90 seconds. It was art. We will never see the likes of it again.

Here's footage of the Jets going to the locker room at halftime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4xGGgz5TcI Also here's the GDT (archives required): https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3518776 The very first Butt Fumble post: https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3518776&userid=0&perpage=40&pagenumber=157#post409851049 The thing I remember most from that play while watching it live is noted idiot announcer Cris Collinsworth making it seem like Vince Wilfork made some superhuman effort to throw his man into Sanchez's path when really Mark Sanchez is a loving idiot and ran directly into Moore's rear end. Oh also my personal favorite part of the Butt Fumble is when Sanchez hits the ground, lifts his head up a bit, realizes he's lost the football and then just puts his head back on the ground in total defeat lmao this was basically the moon landing for anyone born after 1969 (also the last time the Jets won a Super Bowl was before we walked on the moon)

It was also the day that Fireman Ed called it quits - temporarily. quote:During the butt fumble game, a rout of the Jets by the New England Patriots on Thanksgiving night 2012, Anzalone left the game before halftime, stating that he would no longer lead cheers at Jet games as Fireman Ed.[11] At the first game of the 2015 NFL season, Fireman Ed returned to lead cheers for the Jets.[12] haljordan posted:Oh also my personal favorite part of the Butt Fumble is when Sanchez hits the ground, lifts his head up a bit, realizes he's lost the football and then just puts his head back on the ground in total defeat lmao this was basically the moon landing for anyone born after 1969 (also the last time the Jets won a Super Bowl was before we walked on the moon) Impossibly Perfect Sphere fucked around with this message at 03:53 on Nov 24, 2022 |

ESPN had to retire the Butt Fumble from the Not Top Ten because it would never, ever lose on its ownquote:For forty consecutive weeks, each Not Top 10 finished with the Butt Fumble as the Worst of the Worst. Not only were fans still voting for it nearly ten months after it originally occurred, none of the plays that made the worst of the week before even came close to defeating it in the Worst of the Worst vote. On September 6, 2013, ESPN decided that it was time to move on from the Butt Fumble and retired the play from further Worst of the Worst consideration. A SportsCenter producer explained that it was time to "start fresh" as the 2013 NFL season began. Negandhi concluded, "Time to get some new material and years from now, when we see a really bad play, we'll say, 'But can it compare to the Butt Fumble?' That is setting a legacy." Before retiring the play, ESPN subjected it to analysis on its "Sports Science" segment. In this segment, they show how Sanchez's speed combined with the angle of impact created a force of over 1,300 pounds, well over the 125 pounds required to cause a fumble. FORTY CONSECUTIVE WEEKS

I remember those weekly not top tens. Every week it was so beautiful and if ESPN weren’t cowards they would have accepted the universes demands and still have the buttfumble being voted #1 to this day.
