If they miss the playoffs at all, it will be barely. Their first rounder isn't gonna be in serious contention to get Bedard Letang or no. Early indications sound like Letang will be back this season anyhow.

It sounds like the Pens are finally trying Rakell on the top pp. Don't know why Sullivan waited this long to attempt it. He's been arguably their best 5v5 winger all season long. At worst second best after Jake. Certainly more rounded and willing to battle, which that unit desperately needs.

To be clear, they had to rescind the penalty because they can't change the call after review. They can only decide to keep the call or not. So they simultaneously managed to piss off both the Blues by making a high sticking call where there wasn't one and the Pens by missing a call that shoulda been. NHL reffing baby.

Personally I appreciate how insane Binnington is. There's not enough old school nut job goalies any more.

Saying stuff like "he's only 15th in scoring if you don't count all these other points he scored" seems kinda dumb to me. If it was so easy, why isn't every other star player scoring at his level? Robertson is the only non-Oiler coming close and it's required him playing at an insanely unsustainable level for anyone that isn't Connor McDavid.

McDavid's 53% xgoals seems fine enough considering how insanely good he is on the PP to go along with that.

Also most of the guys who have eye popping 5v5 xgoals numbers are surrounded by teammates who are also dominating 5v5. Like sure Bergeron's 70% is sick, but Marchand is at 66%.

Meanwhile the Oilers have like five players who even manage to hit 50% xgoals 5v5.

Bastion was clearly in the crease, clearly bumped the goalie, and clearly impeded Murray from playing his position. Them's the rules. If you wanted to argue that without the contact by Sid that the puck doesn't go into the net (which I agree with) than by all means, but it seems quite a stretch to say Crosby 'impeded' the goalie from playing his position. On the flip side, if that were called a 'no goal' on the ice I could see a coin flip for if it were overturned or not.

I don't think it's a stretch. It seemed like Elvis couldn't extend his pad all the way liked he wanted to, and since Sid was in the blue paint Elvis is theoretically entitled to that ice. Elvis did initiate the contact but Sid was in the blue paint.

I wouldn't have been upset to see it called back.

But I don't think the NHL has any discernible criteria they use for this stuff other than it seems like they'll call a goal back if they think the goalie might have made the save if not for the contact. But it feels like if there was some level of contact and the goalie wasn't likely to make the save anyways then they'll usually let the goal stand.

But again, there's very little consistency here.

And it was absolutely cool for Guentzel to slash Anderson and Skinner and then punch Skinner in the back of the head while he was trying to get up from the ground, right? He got a slashing penalty (and so did Skinner) but no instigating? Retaliation? Roughing?

Per usual with NHL suspensions, people always point out similar situations that they treated different for seemingly no reason. NHL wheel of justice and all that.

Unless I missed something it wasn't Guentzel who slashed Anderson. That was Rakell, and it wasn't that hard. It was the typical slight whack after the whistle that always makes a goalie lose their mind. And none of the Sabres even mugged Rakell that hard over it.

Guentzel wasn't near the net and Skinner and him somehow got tangled up and lead to this incident. I don't even know why those two were going at it. My guess is Guentzel said something. He talks trash all the time so he mighta said something to Skinner to start that.

Is there anybody in the league more accurate than Ovi at hitting an ENG? He’s probably the best and I agree with the statement that it likely throws off the 6 on 5 offense as they have to account for him at all times.

Ovechkin leads the league with 5 this year. Guentzel has 4 and is second. Career wise Ovechkin has 53, and is second all time behind Gretzky (56). The other active leaders are Marchand (32), Eric Staal (31), Sidney Crosby (28), Zach Parise (28), Blake Wheeler (28), Patrice Bergeron (27), Patrick Kane (26).

If we're going by rate scoring Marchand seems pretty good at them. His 32 empty net goals have come in 893 games. Yet if you extrapolate that out to the same GP that Ovechkin has then that would put Marchand with around 46-47 ENG, or still behind Ovechkin.

Seems pretty clear that as in all things goalscoring Ovechkin is the best at empty netters too.

If we assume he hits 50 goals again this year that would put him at 830 goals with 64 to go to catch Gretzky. Yeah I'd say he makes it assuming he doesn't severely decline next year. Even if he declined to like a 30 goal season it would only take him another season or two after that to finish passing Gretzky.

And I don't see why he would decline that way. He can stand there and sock dingers and knock in rebound goals all day probably into his 40s. Wouldn't surprise me if he has another two seasons in him of hitting 30-50 goals a year
