I kind of took for granted how good Ovechkin was for a while. Laine came into the league with one of the most hyped releases in the league, and looked like he’d be a threat for 50 every year sitting in Ovie’s office on the power play in his rookie year. But it took less than 2 years for teams/goalies to figure it out and now he barely even scores on the powerplay Ovie’s been socking dingers from that left hashmark on the powerplay for his entire career and there is absolutely nothing teams can do to stop it. Add to that he is like 240lbs, plays physical and never gets hurt and there’s never gonna be another player like him. I remember when teenage Svechnikov thought it was a good idea to fight him in the playoffs and almost got a brain injury lol

Even though there aren’t really any more huge Scott Stevens 90’s style open ice hits in hockey anymore (which is good,) as someone that grew up watching it I cringed so hard when Hronek literally turns his head around exorcist style to look who’s behind him as he skates the puck up the middle of the ice. gently caress Ryan Reaves for throwing that hit at a guy that didn’t see him coming. Hronek was having a breakout season in Detroit too (24pts in 29 games)
