TLDR effort post.

After about 4 hours of High on Life I really really like this game. I'm not a Rick and Morty superfan or anything. It's kind of fun to have on in the background when I'm doing something else, it can be grating sometimes and sometimes it'll be pretty funny I dunno I guess I like it but very casually. Justin Roiland is kind of a one trick pony, but when it lands it can be good. Just saying that to set up that I'm not some Rick and Morty evangelical rolling on the floor at a McDonalds over dipping sauce. I did like his other VR games though, especially Trover Saves the Universe which actually made me laugh out loud a lot and was a fun game all around. High on Life is not making me laugh as frequently, but I dunno it is actually pretty funny sometimes and even when it's not funny it's aggressively entertaining. It's stupid but stupid isn't always a bad thing imo. It's worth noting that if you are that bothered by the quippy chatter the game gives you a toggle that lets you reduce it or even turn it off entirely. I don't turn it off, but I could see why others would. The only chatter that pisses me off is the "do X!" stuff games do all the time now which this game has in droves. The jokey bits don't bug me at all.

Since the "Justin Roiland" rift seems to be dominating the conversation I want to address the actual game though. It's actually pretty drat good. Flawed, but there's a lot of cool poo poo going on.

First imo the visuals loving rule. It looks like if Toejam and Earl or some early 90's Nickelodeon thing, only it actually looks really drat good. The environments and characters and animation all look fantastic imo. There's a wide variety of locales that all look really distinct and cool in their own way. I don't think I am even more than 1/3rd in and I have seen U.S. suburbs, a futuristic alien city, a desert wasteland, A grimey cyperpunk city, a carebear ewok village, A toxic fishing village...I think I might be missing some but the scenery changes a lot and is always full of new characters with little bite sized stories which is really fun.

The gameplay is actually fun as hell. At first I thought it was going to be a comedy game that is a crap fps. The first area has really basic gameplay and it was fine, but I had fully prepped myself to not expect much from the gameplay after it. But I was wrong. The game just keeps throwing awesome upgrades and mobility options at you which makes traversal and combat a blast. I can swing all over with a grappling hook and do rocket slides all over the place that launch enemys across the map which is good because holy gently caress this game throws a lot of enemies at you. To me the combat feels somewhere in between modern Doom and Halo. It's not as is good as either of those, but it is good and feels very satisfying. It's a mix of floor is lava and getting your poo poo to recharge. The enemy behavior reminds of Halo there's just way more of them, but you can fling yourself all over the place which rules.

Then there is the guns. Super fun and unique. People seem to hate the idea of a gun talking to you but gently caress that. having a shotgun that is JB Smoove, that can also launch massive bouncing saw blades and suck enemies towards you with a vacuum owns so hard. All of the guns feel creative and satisfying so far.

On the other end of it the enemy variety is too sparse and the enemy behavior is a little boring. So far it's just been a handful and I wish there was more, or more variety within them. Also ran into a couple of scripting bugs that made me restart a checkpoint.

Overall this game is getting really unfairly dunked on though. it's a drat good game (so far at least) imo. And I wouldn't be surprised if it was in my GOTY list.

Just in the couple hours Phil streamed yesterday there were at least 2 separate sections where they parodied how annoying it is that AAA game characters never shut the gently caress up by having a character show up and never shut the gently caress up and then another character will comment on how annoying it is.
