This probably isn't a meaningful addition, but I briefly did a look on youtube for some of the interesting Vietnamese eats I had overseas and I just was immediately inundated with previews of videos featuring click-baity "YOU WON'T BELIEVE THEY EAT THIS" bullshit lines while also showing clearly photoshopped pics of something that isn't in the actual video.

Which is my way of saying that I could never subject this thread to that poo poo :)

Youtube has been acting weird for me (keeps saying I'm disconnected even though other sites work fine) so I can't link any videos.

You should try searching for "Best ever food review vietnam."

Don't let the name fool you. The host - Sonny Side - is easily as charismatic as Anthony Bourdain and he usually hires locals to guide him. Vids range from 10min shorts to 2 hour documentaries.

He travels all over the Mid East and Africa too.

Ah! - its working again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=results

They do some pretty clickbaity titles, but it's great. Aren't the two hour documentaries basically all of the 10-20 minute videos from a location edited into a longer form?

Uh.. yes.

He is in South Africa right now. Should be a documentary length episode soon - with bloopers.

I don't know how to strip things from youtube or make mp4s or whatever but look at this:

Street food in Afghanistan is fascinating. That up there is also the closest thing that actually looks like a western style burger in Afghanistan. You ask for a burger in Afghanistan you usually get something like this:

Sometimes they are made with sausage - beef of course. They also have chips, boiled eggs, cabbage and various other things.

I had to make it stick to the bottom so I used a bit of olive oil and pressed it down.

It doesn't look too bad.

Verdict: I used some cheese on the inside to bind it. It doesn't taste that much different than usual, it just has a faint aftertaste of cheese cracker. I probably won't do this again. Don't try this unless you got a teflon coated sandwich press!

So you put shrimp on skewers inside the egg wrap? How do you eat that?

And then the egg isn't yellow when in liquid form?

Likely a free range egg. Not technically free range (which qualifies as 4 square feet where I'm from) but actually allowed to run about.

I've kept chickens and there is a world of difference between eggs from a free range hen and the eggs you get at the supermarket. Such as a darker, almost orange yolk.

I fed my chickens kitchen scraps, like cabbage and brocolli stems and carrot peels. Yeah, carotene might have darkened the yolk.

Best curry in Japan is in an almost abondoned shopping mall filled with adult video stores or massage parlours.

Not sure what's topping that curry but it looks like rendered fat. The stuff that floats to the top and solidifies when you drain the juices out of a pot roast.

your tags are wrong, MP4 is a video it's bolted on to the URL tags not the IMG tags, you actually used timg tags. If you use a computer pasting the URL will automatically put in the correct tags for .mp4 vs .jpg on imgur.

Thank you, but I am using a computer. I'll know next time.

The countryside is covered in poop

I've lived in farming country, I can confirm this. It is everywhere.

I've often wondered why lamb is so much more expensive to buy in shops here than beef. Most of it is shipped to France. It's because the local farmers don't want to eat it. They spend all day around them, tramping through dung, shearing them, dipping them, getting pissed on by them. Then they come home, hose the poo poo off their boots and throw their clothes in the wash.

Would you want to sit down to a plate of lamb chops?

I noticed the same thing when I watched Rick Stein on TV. He came walking out of a seaside cafe with a dejected look on his face. He asked for a piece of fried fish and the cafe owner said "I'm sorry, we don't serve fish. This is a fishermans cafe."

I've never noticed this with beef though. Probably because beef tastes a lot different than how a cow smells.

Cows aren't pretty either. I've seen them lining up for the cattle crush, lift their tails and then spray dung directly on to the snout of the cow behind it.
