Not sure what the IIHF criteria is but that would be an insane challenge in the NHL, he literally has the puck lol

In the NHL I think that would obviously be a no goal based on the theory that literally the only thing they care about is "was there contact in the crease?"

Nah if a player had possession like that and the goalie hadn't initiated contact yet, they'd allow it

I don't understand that call. He has the puck and he's making a play with it and the goalie pushes into him.

he butt bumps the goalie in one direction then puts the puck in the other direction. like, even if you think it's wrong it's pretty clear what the decision is based on

he didn't initiate the contact, the goalie did, and after he already had the puck and was shooting

I dunno "he's entitled to his space" or whatever. Like, I think it's pretty easy to see how they ended up where they did

I don't know what the IIHF criteria is, I assume they made the right call under their hosed up rules. Still think that's a goal in the NHL

Yeah but like, "the goalie initiated contact" because the play was in his crease. I think it was a wild challenge but given the IIHF's real strict rules adherence sometimes, I can see it. Otherwise just skate rear end-backwards into the goalie on a breakaway like I used to do in NHLPA 96.

Canada's lovely defense will surely cost them another legitimate goal before the period is out.

Yeah I suppose it would be more accurate for me to say I get why they made the call but I don't agree with it and I'm pretty sure in the NHL that would have been ruled a goal.

I don't know how/if the IIHF rulebook differs on goalie interference though so maybe their call makes sense according to the rulebook they have

IIHF is stricter than the NHL and pretty black and white. Touch the goalie in the crease? No goal. Doesn't matter if the goalie initiates contact or the attacker. Puck position doesn't matter. Only thing that counts is don't touch the goalie in the crease. It's the goalie's crease so don't go inside. Even if the goalie punches the dude in the face and while he's distracted by punching the dude the puck goes in, it's a penalty on the goalie, but no goal.

Goalie interference is nicely rule 69.

https://blob.iihf.com/iihf-media/iihfmvc/media/downloads/rule%2520book/220721_iihf_rulebook_v22.pdf

Examples from IIHF rulebook posted:

Situation 6 D
A Goalkeeper initiates contact with an attacking Player to
establish position in the crease and the attacking Player
refuses to give ground at the time a goal is scored.

Goal is disallowed. A Minor Penalty is not assessed (loss of goal
only). The announcement should be, “No goal due to interference with
the Goalkeeper."

Situation 6 G
A Goalkeeper initiates contact with an attacking Player
to establish position in the crease by using excessive force or
acting in a manner which would otherwise warrant a penalty,
and the attacking Player vacates the crease at the time a goal
is scored.

Goal is disallowed. Additionally, the Referee in their judgment must
assess the appropriate penalty to the Goalkeeper.
This is an example where the attacking Player has prevented the
Goalkeeper from doing their job by being in the crease. The an-
nouncement should be, “No goal due to interference with the
Goalkeeper (plus the announcement of the Goalkeeper’s penalty).”
