Coxswain Balls posted:Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy gets a lot of well deserved praise, but I thought A Most Wanted Man was also really good while not hearing a lot about it. Our Kind of Traitor was also decent but not as good as the other two. TTSS is good, I might check out those others. And yeah your typical CIA “agent” is a schlubby middle-aged divorced ex-military dude doing pretty mundane HUMINT case management. I tend to like the more realistic spy stuff. The Spy on Netflix is one of my favorite.

Gutcruncher posted:BR2049 had some dumb Leto scenes but overall I did actually like it more than BR1 fite me Yeah 2049 being better than the original Blade Runner is a hill I’m still willing to die on. There are some questionable Jared Let-bro moments and Harrison “Part Time” Ford shouldn’t have been in it at all. But it has all of the story and world building that the original lacks, while still being a gorgeous film.

Tom Hanks has been slipping into his “Part Time”/old man/ no longer gives a poo poo phase of his career for a while now. I watched Greyhound recently, and he was really doing the bare minimum. It didn’t help that he was 20 years too old for the part either.

Cugel the Clever posted:So are these geriatric actors financially inept and really need the money or just super narcissistic and unable to not be in front of the cameras? If I were a millionaire actor, I'd at least take advantage of my incredible privilege to only appear in movies that I actually wanted to be in. Yeah it’s got to be an ego thing for most of them, they just can’t stand to go quietly into retirement. It’s especially weird with Harrison Ford, since he seems to absolutely hate Hollywood and every movie he’s in now.

The quality of streaming content has loving nosedived over the last few years, just so many lovely genre shows, most of which are adaptations or parts of existing franchises, being run into the ground by failson writers. Even the good stuff you can’t count on ever getting renewed. Netflix is now a graveyard of unfinished one season shows.

Randarkman posted:I look forward to when "prestige TV" type shows finally die. It was fine back in the 2000’s when there were only like a dozen or so prestige projects. The problem began when everyone and their grandmother started trying to copy the prestige TV formula. There just isn’t enough actual talent in Hollywood to sustain hundreds of long form genre series. So you get poo poo like two nobodies who’s only qualifications are that their daddies are friends with JJ Abrams running a billion dollar LotR series. It doesn’t need to die per-se but we need to go back to the days where there were only a few really ambitious series, and everything else was just cheap crap. I think we’re starting to see it, as even Netflix is going back to making fluff semi-serialized comfort food shows. Emily in Paris is unashamedly Life Time-tier poo poo done up a bit, but it’s immensely popular. colonelwest fucked around with this message at 18:03 on Jan 3, 2023 |

I’m the same age as Jenny and I’ve never gotten her appeal, or at least why she engenders so much loyalty in her fan base. To me she’s just a weird woman-child, and I find her love of pop culture slop and lack of maturity to be off-putting.

Yeah my boy Dan Olson/Folding Ideas absolutely skewered him. CharlestheHammer posted:Is this a bit or are you in the wrong thread I see very little similarity between her and RLM, other than they very occasionally touch on the same topics. RLM sometimes uses childish humor, but they aren’t man-children. There are layers of irony and criticism in everything they do, and they’ve made fun of people like Jenny and their child bedrooms full of Porgs on many occasions.

I mean their entire schtick from the very beginning has been one giant take down of pop-culture from a wry, detached, and very Mid Western perspective. If you want to believe that they’re simpatico with Jenny, then go ahead? But I don’t see it at all, and I think it kind of insults the intelligence and effort behind their content.

At this point I could almost say that I would watching the Back to the Future Movies for the first time, because I only ever saw them in bits and pieces on TV in the 90’s and it was mostly just the third one which was constantly playing in a loop on TNT.

stephenthinkpad posted:Yeah I have very similar experience to BTTF Franchise. I watched Indy trilogy way later than everyone else but the movies were good enough so I watched them all from beginning to end like normal blockbuster movies. BTTF I tried to watch but it felt like the movie was targeting a different audience so I got distracted and never finished it. I still haven't watched Citizen Kane btw, just never work up the mood to watch it. BTTF are really well made films, but the premise just never interested me much. I’m not really into silly time travel high jinks. I like my sci-fi either set in space or a dystopian downer. I’m sure I’ll get around to sitting down and watching the whole trilogy in order some day, but I’ve got a huge backlog of other movies to watch first. I watched Citizen Kane recently in preparation to watch Mank. And I thought it was amazing on a technical level, but the non-linear narrative is too disjointed and undermines the thrust of the story and the arch of the main character.

Other than Dune part 2 there isn’t a single movie on that list that I’m interested in. I was going to say maybe Oppenheimer too, but than I saw that Nolan wrote the script.
