Kind Words 1 is a wonderful game but nothing in the announcement of the sequel sounded appealing at all.

Yeah, I'm not really seeing what anything in there would accomplish that Kind Words isn't already doing. It is a lovely thing though.

A less positive thing I will say about Control is that the DLC seems unnecessary.

I agree with this. Just playing the main game and ignoring the DLC is a much better experience.

I really liked Fallout 4. The main story was meh but being able to just wander around doing whatever, building bases I found fun. Basically how I played Morrowind but with base building.

According to CPI calculator what I paid for a single new game in 1993 is the equivalent of $105 today.

Considering what you can get for that today during a Steam sale it's actually kind of wild much video games as a whole haven't been hit by inflation.

Oh, so it's a Europa Universalis IV situation? I'm actively waiting for Paradox to stop developing that game so the dust can finally settle and I can figure out which of the five billion new mechanics/DLC are actually worth learning/buying

Haha I'm in the same boat with that game. Looks super interesting but I don't want to play a partial game and I'm not invested enough to pay nearly full price for all that DLC.

According to my steam review my ideal game is a deck based city builder with a tower defense phase that's also an emotional story where choices matter.

So, ya know, get on that, game people.

Speaking of BG3, if I want to get back into that game but I left off still in act 1 (Albeit at 20h, though I think a good chunk of it was reloading and screwing around) and I haven't really played since the patches, is it better to just restart? I mean I do not really want to but it would be nice to avoid any weirdness.

If you were still in Act 1 there's only a few things that really could have gone wrong, Act 1 and 2 were much more polished than Act 3 at launch which was where almost all the weird sequence breaking stuff happened to most of us. You're probably fine to continue. But if you were looking to be enabled in starting over than yes, absolutely, it's vitally necessary that you make a new character.

One of the games on my wishlist was at 10%, then 33%, now 40% off, so uh, yeah definitely some weirdness.

I remember grabbing a copy of Alpha Centauri after PC Gamer gave it a 98 (highest score ever) and all my friends at school had been gushing about Civ2 for years.

I installed it, opened the tutorial, right clicked once and a context menu bigger than my screen real estate popped up. My eyes glazed over, I closed it and never played an 4X again :v:

Man, what a time to be alive, look at some of the names in those reviews:

Cd rom edition! Ahhh nostalgia.

Also SMAC was really only accessible if you’d played the civ games before them. I wouldn’t try to play it for the first time in 2024 if you never played civ 2 unless you have many hours to dedicate to just leaning what buttons are where.

I agree with everything said about about SMAC, but guys c'mon a lot of that is nostalgia. Has anyone tried playing the game in the past year or two? It's probably filled with all sorts of UI monstrosities and tedious minutiae. I don't dare check, I'd rather have the fond memories.

Indeed, I have very fond memories of this game from 20 years ago that I have no desire to ruin by seeing how it feels to play in 2024.

I never buy new games anymore. Not out of principle or anything I just have too many old games to play to ever need to pay full price.

Of course this does not stop me from buying games that are 1/3 finished in early access because let’s be reasonable.

What did people ultimately hate about it? Seems pretty identical to the original game.

Just looking for a new chill Dungeon Keeper map painter really.

I have 100%'d EG2 but never played EG1. Almost all of the features of EG2 that make you think it's a fun little base builder with zany traps and casinos to distract people and managing minions and such just don't really exist in the game unless you purposefully play badly or stick to really low levels. By far the most efficient way to play is to just passively generate money and set up a kill box of muscle minions to mow down the good guys as they march into your casino and set it all up to constantly be replacing itself. Beating the game on harder settings is much easier if you completely ignore traps, minion attributes, the entire casino section of the game, etc. It's basically cookie clicker with a few extra settings at that point.

I found the gameplay loop soothing for when I just wanted to turn off my brain and chill while watching movies on the other screen, but I can definitely see why anyone who was expecting minion management beyond the rudimentary, or trap building, or deception, or really decision making at all would be disappointed in it.

Oh and @#$#ing helicopter takes forever to send minions off to missions.

I’ve kept BG3 on my wishlist for a long rear end time and every time I think about pulling the trigger I get talked out of it by discussions like this. Think I may just wait for 40%-50% off sales to hit before getting it. I do want to experience it but I’m worried about the length and burnout people are describing.

I did a playthrough just to get to the dark urge ending achievement on normal mode without using any exploits or skips or anything and it took me 8 hours.

You have the option to make it into a 100 hour epic by doing literally everything on harder modes if you like. People who have played through what feels like an entire RPG before getting to third act I get that it can feel exhausting, but if you're exploring every nook and cranny in a huge game, uh, yeah, it's gonna take a while. Seems like a weird critique to me. There's nothing wrong with taking a break if you've played a game a lot, regardless of whether you completed it ten times or are only halfway through at the point you get tired of it.

I honestly recommend people to play through first on normal difficulty and don't worry about seeing everything, you can always go back and do it all again. It won't be anywhere close to 100 hours with that approach.

That being said if you're not in a hurry no reason not to wait. I doubt it's going on sale for 50% off anytime soon, but with the summer sale right around the corner no reason not to wait and find out.

Also, I must add, I have been broken by Disco Elysium in expectations - I prefer way more a crpg with consistent story, themes and such, and Baldur's Gate 3 wants to deliver a very different experience, where consistency is compromised (and not so much as to say there's none, which is a great feat by Larian) by the need to give the freedom to swerve off the path at any given time.

My friend if you're setting the bar at Disco Elysium for anything other than game mechanics I want to know what you've found that doesn't disappoint you.
