Every year on my birthday I go with my sister and her little girl to the zoo. A couple of years ago the kiddo was about two and a half and we went on the little steam train thing that goes around the zoo. We adults were all gasping and pointing and showing her elephants and stuff and she was politely interested, and then suddenly she leapt to her feet and pointed and shouted "TRACTOR!!!"

There was a tractor doing something in a field on the other side. We asked her in the car what was her favourite animal at the zoo and she said it was the tractor.

Anyway now she plays Minecraft but just as a way to collect as many cats as possible and walk around with them.

This reminds me of when I saw a coworker giving a tour of some stuff to a bunch of kindergartener's where I worked. I won't get into details, but needless to say the workshop had some really cool stuff that you don't see every day. The kids seemed kind of bored until he used the crane to pick up something to show them better. The kids pointed and stared in amazement and for the next 10 minutes just asked him to make the crane go up and down.

A few things to note; first of all you can always restart a mission if it looks like it's going tits up, and the game autosaves when you warp into a new system so you can always revert save if you bite off more than you can chew, but more importantly directing your squadmates around using the F1-F5 keys seems to be really important because they love to leroy jenkins straight into battle and get annihilated. On top of that there seems to be a bit of a design philosophy when putting together mechs for your AI pilots because they are dumb as gently caress and will close into their range for weapons regardless of whether it's safe to or not. There's a couple steam guides about designing mechs for squad mates and it seems to be mostly about keeping a low amount of weapon groups that all have around the same med-long range and plenty of cooling. I've been using lots of Medium lasers, stripping jump jets on them because they don't use them very well either (same with machine guns, S Lasers, anything that would make them want to get up close to fight) which leaves more room for more cooling and armor.

Also make sure you're picking missions you can meet the tonnage for, anything less usually means you'll be outmatched by bigger and better mechs. Recently I've been bringing in a Firestarter for myself to run around in and generally be a nuisance while I have my AI bots in heavier armored mechs running mostly M/L Lasers.

Also if I remember right most stock mechs blow and you need to tear poo poo off of them and load every mech as close to max armor as you can, particularly in the center.

I started playing Morrowind again with OpenMW and I actually love having to follow vague directions to get to my destination. There are definitely some QoL things that could be better (like being able to have the relevant journal entry pinned on the screen or something -- I've started just screenshotting it and having it open on my second monitor) but it's so much more engrossing than just walking towards a dot. Plus it makes roads mean something because I can follow them and read the signs instead of just walking straight over a mountain or something.

It’s not the same, but I got a similar feeling playing Outward.

It's funny that most of my Elder Scroll experiences are sort of a blur, but by far my most fond memory is of playing Morrowind with my Argonian class I called a 'skirmisher' which specialized in spears, medium armor, and some kind of magics I don't remember. I was definitely disappointed when Oblivion basically deleted my character concept by doing away with spears and medium armor.

I really liked Survive but it was definitely slow about unlocking things. The 'build fence and poke through it with a spear' is just an effective combo that you get relatively early. Eventually you get rolling and have all kinds of tricks, guns, etc. They saved a lot of stuff (including whole bosses and things) for a sort of 'meta game' after the single player campaign as well. There is also a shitload of amazing end game stuff hidden behind the coop multiplayer (which I actually had fun with honestly).

It's been great so far, but the process for modding it is kind of annoying. I eventually got it to work and added a few extra mods that I was interested in (at the bare minimum I suggest one of the 'expansion delay' mods to avoid getting attacked by an expansion assassin on like your very first night in the game).

Yeah, it looks like that would give me the same problem. I think my stomach would protest at anything that wasn't sitting in a smoothly moving vehicle like a spaceship or maybe a car, or being able to "blink" move around the world like you can in Alyx.

Man, for years I've heard people complain about motion sickness and thought how lucky I was not to suffer from it, experiencing it was not a good time!

My favorite non-ALYX VR games have been: Beat Saber, Elite Dangerous, H3VR (Hotdogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades), SW: Squadrons (I know you weren't impressed, but as long as I'm flying rebel ships its something I've dreamed about since I was a kid), and heavily modded Skyrim VR (seriously, the modding scene is incredible and adds some real 'why wasn't this included in the release?' type stuff).

Other fun games to consider (not sure if these would make you motion sick or not): Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Into the Radius, Vox Machinae (big stompy robot simulator sort of like Mechwarrior), Ragnarock, Until You Fall, No Man's Sky

Oh and make sure to download 'the lab' and give it a try. It's free (Valve created) and a lot of fun.

I got Skyrim VR setup over the weekend for my Index; 100% of the time, the game phys glitches out on the cart you spawn in and it's literally unplayable out of the box [for me anyways]. Like I tried 6 different times and the intro segment glitched out in different fantastic ways each time. I went to the Steam Community Hub looking to download the popular / necessary mods, low and behold there's a Guide right on the landing page titled "Skyrim VR Modding Made Easy" and it links to a modpack with a whole bunch of horny texture/model replacement packs lol.

Went straight to the VR thread here and on Reddit and eventually got the game sorted and playable after like 4 hours.

Oh man when I had my VR on and the cart started flipping around it almost made me sick. Yeah, an alternate start mod is pretty much required.

Because of this thread I've also spun up Shadows of War and I've been having fun with it. My favorite orc so far is one who has a lute and sings songs as he is chasing me around. Last night I finally got him as my bodyguard. The game is so large I always end up kind of petering out without actually completing it.

After watching a little bit of Diablo 4 footage I was also in an ARPG mood and loaded up Warhammer Inquisitor: Martyr because I wasn't sure about buying Last Epoch and.... it's kind of a lot of fun? I even bought the expansion on sale for like $5. The first time I played it I played the assassin class and had an 'ok' time. This time I chose the Psycher and I'm having a lot more fun. I thought for sure I would end up playing Diablo 2: Resurrected again to scratch that itch but I think I'll stick with playing this for a while. I will say it's strange that you have to basically go through like 4-6 tutorial missions before it allows you to customize your psychic powers, but once you do it's a pretty fun system of choosing your abilities and unlocking combinations of runes for them to modify them (maybe add an armor penetration rune and a lifesteal rune or something). I'm even finding the story (so far) mildy interesting which is more than I can say for most ARPGS.

EDIT: Tying into that, anything that anybody recommends from the sale?

The Total War Warhammer games are amazing. I haven't gotten very far in it, but chaos gate daemonhunters seems like a good x-com clone. I also enjoyed Space Marine as a pretty fun 3rd person action game (with sneaky great multiplayer at release) but it's cost seems a little pricey for its age.

Warhammer Inquisitor: Martyr is actually a pretty fun ARPG if you pick the psycher, but with games like Diablo 4 around the corner not sure if it's worth it.

Dawn of War 1 and 2 are great (the Dark Crusade expansion to 1 was one of my favorite games for a long time).
