then I feel like Sekiro could probably have just gone ahead and included an easy mode or whatever, since it seems like the game is making a point of actively punishing me for dying. This dragonrot stuff is kind of bullshit. I dunno, I like Dark Soul's difficulty because it needs to account for a huge amount of differently styles of play, but Sekiro, as far as I can tell is just katanas and parries, and there's no real reason to make the game harder and punish you more for dying if there's zero way to mitigate it. I could be wrong as I'm pretty early on, but christ.

There's an easy mode mod:

My problem with Sekiro is that it's a 4 year old game that still retails for $59.99 ($29.99 with a DEEP DISCOUNT).

Not really, the story doesn't really matter. You might also appreciate 2016 more if you go back to it after Eternal as it's a tighter experience.

I wish there were mods for Outer Wilds to remove the most video gamey parts (anglerfish and the timed sand puzzles). They were by far the weakest parts of the game and create a skill floor that's not necessary at all. Most of the gamers I know IRL mainly play strategy or adventure games and I know they'd find those sections far too frustrating to navigate.

Also, just emulate Twin Snakes! Should run perfectly.

I feel obligated to chime in about Forspoken as a Black Poster™, been thinking about it all day.

Whenever I read a review like the Polygon Review, it makes me wish that white people would just shut the gently caress up about race. All it reveals to me is that the reviewer thinks that black identity centers around dealing with racism and police brutality, which is a perception so shallow and clueless that it wraps around to being racist AF.

There is something to be said about how Forspoken includes race. Based on what I've read here and elsewhere Forspoken's writers are all white, and the 'diversity' stems from incorporating a black face into a white story. What I want (and I think what everyone would benefit from) are black characters written by black people, including on black culture(s), not black characters written by white people.

What are the most graphically demanding games with stylized/unique art direction?

The standards (Cyberpunk 2077, Control, Metro Exodus) don't really do anything for me-- and I think it's because they're all going for cinematic realism with different color palettes. I'm curious if there's a video game equivalent of Into the Spider-Verse - that pushes current tech in a way that isn't just about repeating what's come before.

Marauders remind me of the Black Knights from Dark Souls. You need to outsmart them, not out-twitch or out-aim them. Once you figure them out they're real easy to bait.

The enemies that killed me most were Arachnotrons and Cyber Incubi, because I have terrible aim.

Has the new(ish) big picture mode update completely hosed playing non-steam games for anyone else?

Since the update whenever I try to launch a non-steam game, steam doesn't switch focus to the game window, and it sets my controller into desktop mode. So even if I grab my keyboard and manually alt-tab into the game window, the pop-up keyboard will randomly show up every time I press the left stick.

For similar reasons, now it's pretty much impossible to do in-home streaming with those games.

Are these hitches exclusive to the full game? I played the demo and it ran really smoothly.

EDIT: I think the massive whining about M&K on the reviews are probably because all the controller players are smart enough to play it on gamepass instead of spending 60 70 bux for the steam release.

Thing about Sekiro is that you have to be good at parrying. There is no way around it. Honestly there aren't any good comparisons (maybe Wo Long but I only played the demo). Even Metal Gear Rising is more relaxed when it comes to parrying. IIRC there are only two bosses that require it and it's quite forgiving with them, while with Sekiro you'll run into trash that you have to parry to get past.

Buy it and see how you feel in the two hour window. If it doesn't seem enjoyable by that point, refund it-- It's not like FromSoft or Activision are hurting for money.

IMO, the obtuse mapping and fast travel systems in Hollow Knight only work because they nearly perfected every other part of the game. Aimlessly wandering in HK is it's own experience because of the tight controls, inspired art design, and incredible soundtrack.

I can easily see how the same systems in a less well designed game would sour the experience.

This is always such a weird thing for me.

Like FF14 forces you to pay monthly, and it takes a month of dailies to unlock one of the "free" mounts. So it's not free. It's paying $15 for the joy of doing lovely side missions for 30 days to get a $15 "earnable" mount. Almost all the mounts are gated in this way. RNG drops are scarce, and unless you dramatically outlevel the content it's going to take awhile to get RNG in your favor.

Yet that's hailed as such a customer facing move, wheras ESO gets railed at for selling them for like $7. It's all just weird psych bullshit.

Especially because why does it always come back down to mounts? Why do mounts loving matter so much. Why does cash shop poo poo matter so much to people. What's wrong with just the horse.

The type of people who obsess over mounts love he game so much that doing a month of dailies is fun.

Also, if you're completely broke brained (like I was) you can do 4 sets of dailies per day, so that's 4 mounts for 15bux if you consider your time to be worthless.

I guess the difference is that ESO is a mostly F2P model and follows that setup. Which can feel scummy because F2P is most profitable when it's designed to appeal to whales.

That said FFXIV has plenty of limited time and cash shop only mounts on top of the sub fee so. lol.

Tangentially related I was listening to Triple Click today and Jason Schrier (from Bloomberg) was asked about why so many AAA games have been a huge mess. And of course he said Covid - but not in the way you'd think.

Put simply, a lot of AAA developers and publishers pushed back against remote work. This led to lots of key in talent leaving mid-project... Resulting in all the messes we've been seeing.

Again, aside from the 'friend zone' references everything you've mentioned is also found in the kind of JRPGs and anime the devs were probably inspired by.

I will give you that they can seem more jarring when they're in Western media, because the connection to existing political and social movements is more obvious for many.

I am not calling you out specifically, but this kind of cognitive dissonance is really common amongst socially progressive/leftist weebs. Like people who have ACAB on their profile while having anime avatars from poo poo like Hetalia.
