I only really started watching the lower divisions when I was following Asanoyama back up (and my boy Akiseyama on his way down), so those recommended rikishi are great additions to my watchlist.

The differences in talent, skill and physicality are evident but it's still good watching, and just like makuuchi having a bit of storyline flavor always helps.

He could, though.

Sure, he'd lose rank, but who cares? Honestly, his best chance of winning a yusho is to go kyujo to rest/recover from injuries and then spend the first week of the next basho can crushing in the lower maegashira.

The psychology of the banzuke is super interesting to me, if you're going for yushos then it makes sense to take your rest, but if you're hoping to put together an Ozeki run then you might value position more, missing two Bashos then having to climb that mountain again might be a factor in some of these decisions to gut things out.

NHK World show highlights in the UK and is available on Virgin Media, I don't know if it is available on any other platform.

They also air a longer broadcast live on the first and last day.

I just watch it live elsewhere.

NHK on Virgin was how I got into sumo, I watch streams and YouTubes and stuff now but being able to record each days highlights was a huge boost at the start, plus sumopedia and their other specials.

I'm definitely anti whoever that was that shut down Jason too, I'm not sure what they could offer that outdoes NHK World in the first place but loving with an OG of making the sport accessible to a western audience is enough for me to never pay them.

Day 3 thoughts:

Black mawashi Meisei is a new dude, all about the business and unlucky to lose against Abi today, I like seeing rikishi like him bounce back a bit and he's looked strong so far.

Ura is consistently entertaining.

Daiesho with the early lead in the Ozeki race, Hoshoryu looks to be stuck on the same hump he has been for a year but Wakamotoharu could still get there. Tight, but I still think we'll come out of this Basho with a sole new Ozeki.

Teru is fighting an uphill battle, those knees are creaking and seeing the king of the mountain look so shaky is hard going. He looked terrible at the end of the bout and those knees looked about to give out. Half a gold star to whoever tied Tobizaru's mawashi, if it was a little tighter I don't think he would've lasted.

Also, did anyone else catch this shot of the lady ducking for cover from the zabutons flying after Nishikigi's kinboshi?Gold.

Spoke to a dude who was visiting Isegahama beya during the rugby world cup in 2019, pretty interesting hearing how a day goes in front of visitors.

Apparently Takarafuji was the boss at the time and they mentioned how obvious the hierarchy is in person, basically he ordered everyone around and even a recovering Terunofuji was just one of the boys around him at the time - you can't show the soles of you feet to the rikishi and they were advised not to look any of them in the eye while standing. Also picked up on the randomness of the training, like guys having practice bouts then just lifting a random dumbbell and busting out some reps in between. Said it was a cool set up but super traditional and weird to outsiders, they didn't get to try any chanko either.
