To divert a little bit, who do you all think is the most likely next ozeki:

1) Shodai
2) Takayasu
3) Wakatakakage
4) Hoshoryu
5) Kotonowaka
6) Wakamotoharu
7) other

Personally I don't think Takayasu can maintain his level of competition for the next two basho (I don't think they'll give it to him after Hatsu without something crazy). I could see Hoshoryu getting the nod after Haru, he's coming off an 11-4 and hasn't had a make-koshi since Kyushu 2021. If WTK won with a 14-1 or a 15-0 I could see him getting it as well.

Comedy option is Shodai goes 11-4 for a repromotion. I'm betting on Hoshoryu and Wakatakakage to be next in line.

I feel like Wakatakakage has the best chance but he hasn't put together a decent enough string of basho to really be a front-runner to it. Takayasu probably could do it and I could absolutely see Kotonowaka upping his game to power himself in there.

In the end, though, there is only S H O D A I

If you're new to the thread or new to sumo you should try out playing fantasy, it really helps you follow storylines around the basho.

Note that the only Y/O candidate right now is Takakeisho, since Teru is kyujo. My spreadsheet can't accommodate consolidating rank sets, and also making substantial rules modifications to deal with extenuating circumstances is incredibly un-sumo-like. As a result, basically everyone will get Takakeisho. This just makes the S/K pick even more important!

Since no one has picked it up, I've taken it upon myself to organize this sort of last minute! We'll be moving forward with fantasy for this Basho however this will be considered an exhibition only. Standings will not count towards a Goonzuke ranking, as Kenning hasn't posted one after the last Basho for understandable reasons. Let's keep the fighting spirit of this thread going, however, and show the world what our sumo consists of. Hakkeyoi!!

If you've never played Fantasy before, check out the rules. In brief: just choose 3 guys at each rank, and you'll be drafted a team of dudes. That's all you really need to do, although you can trade during the first week if you want (most people don't). It's really fun and helps you get more familiar with lower-ranked guys.

Get your draft picks in by midnight Pacific time. I will do the draft for Sunday! Sumo Banzai!!

Note for a mod: I generally post by phone so I didn't realize I still had my Yokogoona tag from when it was first awarded.. Please replace this with the general one if you can as I do not wish to sully the legacy of the rank of Yokogoona by having currently stolen valor.

I've been lucky enough to do some fantasy draft stuff in the past but this is a solid chunk to do manually without a program. Kenning deserves every bit of praise for running this, his spreadsheet is intuitive enough to use but complex enough I had to kludge some workarounds because I didn't feel like completely trying to decipher it.

Day 4 Recap:

It seems that everyone in the upper ranks is out for blood this basho, Shodai is currently the only sanyaku or higher with less than 3 wins. Poor guy, Shodai.

M 1-5, on the other hand, is taking the brunt of the assault as all 9 active sumotori combined have 10 wins total. I'm not going to go out on a limb and say that this is a trend that will continue but this may end up being the cursed rank for the tournament.

Sekiwake are on a tear so far, with most of them possibly up for promotion, it'll be interesting to see how the rest of the tournament shakes out.

I don't remember if it's been brought up in the thread but I stumbled across Sumo coverage on BloodyElbow, the Vox affiliated MMA site. Interestingly enough, they have full day video for the upper ranks and a nice little quick and dirty analysis.

We're at the halfway point and any questions about Terunofuji have to have been dispelled at this point. He seems to be fully in control, even if there are 2 others with perfect records. We'll probably start to see if Asanoyama can keep the wins going this basho in the next few days as he'll have to start going up against some stronger competition.

Edit: I had completely forgotten that Asanoyama was a Covid protocol demotion. Clearly he should be winning at this point but how soon they throw the highest ranks at him will be something to watch

It was an active day today as Terunofuji now stands alone unbeaten. Asanoyama and Meisei both suffered their first loss but there are still 8 other rikishi with 6 wins including Myogiru. After winning his first bout, Kotoshoho has racked up 7 straight losses putting him on the cusp of make-koshi. If the current trends keep up, we'll have an exciting final few days of sumo to go.

The race for Ozeki is also still heating up; Daieisho and Kiribayama are the two most likely to get the wins needed and they look to be set to face off on Day 9. A loss for either wouldn't immediately knock them out of contention but the road will get more difficult.

Day 9 could be the start of a lot of motion in the ranks. The logjam at the top continues and while all eyes are on Daieisho and Kiribayama to see who will stake a claim for Ozeki; Meisei and Asanoyama should both be due for rather hefty jumps if they continue their performance. Meisei is the first to strike blood against Terunofuji and just wow. If he didn't go in with a game plan, he absolutely put together a solid win. It's very well possible that he laid out a road map for others to take Teru out, though it may be a matter of who Teru fights from this point. Asanoyama can't be too far away should they both continue winning and giving up two kinboshi, even against guys that used to be sanyaku, will probably be something Teru is looking to avoid. I'm also still of the opinion that Wakamotoharu could possibly make Ozeki as well. It was said he needed 13 wins and I can see a world in which he gets it.

Day 10 will certainly be interesting as we can theoretically come out of it with a 5 way tie for first going into the last five matches.

It's still close at the top with make-koshi/kachi-koshi coming in to boost everyone to new highs and lows.

I'm not surprised they set Asanoyama up to meet Teru today. If he wins today, it's plausible that there will be a three way tie at 11-2 with Kiribayama. That would set up either Asanoyama or Terunofuji to go against Kiribayama on day 14 or 15 or possibly one after another to test Kiri for promotion.

Kiribayama definitely had the best set up coming into this, boasting the yusho in March. He can absolutely put an exclamation point on it in the next day or two.

don't they usually try to save the highest ranked match for day 15?

They will also give special thought to avoiding the need for playoffs later on. If Teru wins here, his road to victory is easier than having the complete clusterfuck of standings at the top that this could have become.

We are heading into the last day and the tournament is basically sorted itself out. There are still 6 rikishi who are looking to see which side of the scale they fall on, of which 4 will be fighting head to head.

I haven't been able to find anything about special prizes, though I feel that might be because they won't be contingent on wins today.

I'll post one more update with a short Hanazumo wrap up tomorrow, we still have what should be some exciting matchups waiting for us in a few short hours.

:siren: Hanazumo :siren:

I want to apologize for the delay in posting this; once the results rolled in, I wanted to triple check everything before posting. to say it was a nail-biter is an understatement.

First off our Hanazumo Sansho:

As a reminder
Gino-sho/Technique: No make-koshi on your team.
Kanto-sho/Fighting Spirit: Exceptional performance from a low rank, or other acknowledgement of great performance.
Shukun-sho/Outstanding Performance: Getting the highest number of accolades (i.e. kinboshi, yusho/jun-yusho, and sansho) in the field.

Our gino-sho go to: tiny bug child, thauros, anakha
Our shukun-sho go to: samuel l hacksaw, bessantj, bentai
And finally our kanto-sho: anakha

I want to state here that the sole reason I awarded Kanto-sho as I did was because Anakha was the only one to bet on Meisei and I feel like that was enough of a choice to make it count.

For what we've all been waiting for, our FINAL RESULTS:

code:
66.5	bessantj
66	Thauros
62.5	Samuel L Hacksaw

This one came down to the wire but congrats go to Bessantj for scraping out a .5 point win.

Afterthoughts

First off, whew! When I asked Kenning about running this, I did not expect what I signed up for. They clearly have a well oiled machine going but, as with any other well oiled machine, an inexperienced operator can easily mess it up. It's really a credit to his spreadsheet how easily I was able to get it to work with some minor cajoling, even with my rudimentary knowledge of excel. The field that we had was smaller than the norm but it still was nothing to shy away from. I remain in awe of the work that they've done for our tiny corner of fantasy sumo.

When I saw the results, I wanted to make sure that I triple checked everything, hence leading to the delay in posting this. The math was tight but exciting and I'm 95% confident it's correct in the end. No promotions/demotions are on the line but I still feel obligated to get it correct for the thread.

I have enjoyed running this, I will continue to enjoy watching this with you all, and I look forward to many more basho to come. Fantasy Sumo on something awful dot com is in good hands and I hope that our community continues to grow as we spread our brand of sumo to the four corners of this forum.

2 special prizes for a lineup that didn't feature the yusho or jun-yusho winners ain't too shabby. I'll happily take that.

Meisei was a really interesting pick because he could have been toe to toe with Asanoyama but ended up fizzling a bit at the end there. Getting that kinboshi was the end of his run though as he ended with 6 straight losses. A real shame.

Given the culture, I wouldn't be shocked to see him try to tough out one more Basho but he absolutely should go the Ishiura, I think it was, route and retire early while he still has a semblance of a neck remaining. He absolutely should end up as a coach somewhere, I can't imagine that there aren't some smaller dudes who would love to get his secrets once he's ready to pass them on.

I am very much looking forward to being a spectator again and hoping that the spirit of running the exhibition will flow into my rikishi to help me climb the goonzeki. Please look forward to my brand of sumo once more.

M11+ feels like it'll either be dire or a surprise and no in between. We have, what, three new sumotori and at least one that's out for the foreseeable future.. Should be an interesting tournament for sure.

Fun fact! He appeared first in 1991 in Street Fighter during a period when there were 4 yokozuna in the banzuke until the end of 92 when there started a period of having 0 yokozuna.. In Street Fighter 4, I think, it's mentioned that he's a "haradsshi-yokozuna", or basically an ozeki that didn't get the rope yet. Going out to pick fights probably didn't sit well with the old men at the top!.

I really hope people start treating these kyuji tournaments as the black spots on the Sumo Association that they really are. I know that this really isn't anything new but it seems like the age of steady yokozuna may be over given the atrocious attempts made to shame not just them but also the ozeki they promote into destroying themselves like this.

Hoshoryu may be in a place to capitalize on the sad state of affairs up top. I can't imagine the council would be all too pleased with having tournaments with just a single ozeki, I can see them promoting with 32. I don't think it's likely, but I can see it.

We still have at least two Ozeki next basho, though who knows if Takakeisho actually shows up.

Given the rate of injuries lately, I believe this when I see it. And I say this fully advocating that they should enforce rules regarding injury rest and rehab to make sure that Basho are fought at as close to optimal conditioning as possible.

Giving it a quick look, it's because maezumo was cancelled due to Covid so anyone who debuted had to be ranked under him.

Not a pro-athlete by any means but I work outdoors year round and anecdotally, hydration is one of those things that gets you before you realize it. You don't get thirsty before you get dehydrated sometimes, during the summer months when it's real hot I have an actual hydration routine I use because it's easy to just keep pushing forward on what you're doing and not realize how much water/electrolytes/etc you've lost.

I know that these guys should have people watching them for this kind of stuff but it is actually that easy enough to miss.
