What stops McCarthy from calling a voice vote and then claiming the Aye's have it? Does it have to be via button pushing or individually calling their votes?

you nerds

The thing is its funnier and entirely possible that they do means Arthas because (a) Enough Republicans are youngold enough and gamers for that to be their point of reference and (b) Republicans frequently love to self-identity themselves with the worst villains of popular media i.e Thanos "snapping" away Democrats etc because they don't critically understand or engage with any kind of art or popular media.

We will fight them on the beaches, and on the landing grounds and on the hills, unless they give us terms, then maybe we won't fight them.

Could they get a procedural ruling from the clerk to attempt to switch the vote to some kind of Ranked Voting with Instant Runoff? That might still not get to 218 but might speed up the process.

Could they vote in Jeffries/McCarthy, get everyone properly seated, then vote of no-confidence? What happens? Do they get unseated? Can business resume without a speaker then?

I wonder if McCarthy can try a gamble and call their bluff, announce everyone can freely vote for who they want and if this end up with someone having more votes than McCarthy he'll support them as Speaker, if not then everyone should support him and get it over with?

Could Dems potentially pull a Lincoln, find vulnerable Republicans in Biden leaning districts, older closer to retirement aged Republicans, people who seem more into this for money and power and try to bribe them with positions in the Executive branch to switch to D, or to soft ball future Dem primaries? They just need 6 Republicans to switch or support Jefferies or some lesser number and some number of Present/Abstainations? If this clown show keeps going for long enough this has gotta get more possible right?

Regarding the voting in lockstep thing, I think it's more if Jefferies gets voted in as Speaker on a technicality then they'll vote together in a non confidence vote in lockstep. It's only if Republicans make an offer for a compromise moderate candidate or if Dems pull a Lincoln and get 6 repubs to defect who want off of this sinking ship that the current deadlock breaks if things continue as they are.

How many of the holdouts have to be Present or Absent for KM to win with the current 214 aye votes assuming he can't get any, maybe at most 1, to vote for him? Or does Present not change the math?

Essentially term limits would make it easier for lobbyists to further sink their teeth into people.

e: Mandatory retirement ages might be alright through.

In either case, if one doesn't want the lobbyist power, the limit has to be bootstrapped in a way that doesn't affect a very large portion of chamber at once, which is a little tricky, but maybe it can apply to oldest 10% each term for people who were in power when elected or something?

You could probably introduce it with a gradual phase in effect, essentially stagger them similar to how Senate elections are staggered. So by State, by Election year Periods i.e anyone elected between 1970 and 1979 for example; or a mix so that some people might be forced into retirement without forcing everyone into retirement; Speaker exempted perhaps.

Incumbents really have to gently caress up to get unseated by a challenger, or have their district so radically redrawn that their constituents aren't the same anymore. Forced retirement ages are a little better at letting in new blood; maybe combine it with more generous retirement benefits, structured so the earlier you retire when eligible the better the upfront benefits are.

how does a parallel line intersect

Well parallel lines can only never intersect when assuming a evenly flat infinite plane; in our reality where space-time is affected by gravity space is not flat but can bend, which can result in parallel lines intersecting, particularly in wormholes and blackholes iirc; most euclidian geometry is only true on a specific local area.
