It seems like McCarthy cares mostly about is getting speaker as his job title, so it would be a win-win if Republicans and Democrats made a deal where McCarthy is speaker but the house has to hold a vote on anything that passes the senate with a filibuster proof majority. McCarthy gets to sit at the cool speaker desk with the big kids only sign on it, Democrats get to raise the debt ceiling and pass uncontroversial things, Republicans get to block BRANDON'S SOCIALIST AGENDA (or talk about bipartisanship if Trump goes down in flames next year), the anti-McCarthy group get to grandstand about how every other republican is for BRANDON'S SOCIALIST AGENDA.

I mean it's not going to happen because any Republican who joins that will lose a primary to a cartoon villain who was at 1/6, but other than that it would work out for everyone involved.

I just think it’s funny as all hell as they vote and of course McCarthy doesn’t make it, so then they run another right after it? Are they just expecting it to be like some sort of broken computer that if you keep rebooting it, it might work?

If they hold enough votes maybe they'll get a mystery late night absentee ballot drop that puts McCarthy in the lead :tinfoil:

How is this playing in the right wing media? Has Tucker said he loves the HFC and they're definitely going to get *mumblemumblemumble*, or are they just being silent while the republicans act like useless assholes?

Tucker says McCarthy is a RINO and needs to give concessions (release the evidence showing that January 6 didn't happen and create a select committee to investigate the deep state), but Republicans not being able to elect a speaker is Real Democracy unlike Democrats who are soviet communists that all vote for the same candidate.

The 20 no votes aren't acting this way because somebody is paying them to, that really is the way they are. If they had a set of "owners" who could make them fall in line behind a speaker candidate, they would be voting for McCarthy.

Between McCarthy, Scalise, Jordan, Biggs, and Donalds who would the house Dems "prefer"? I mean I know they are all terrible but the least terrible from the Dem perspective is probably McCarthy right?

McCarthy is probably the least far right on technicality, but they were all 2020 electoral college objectors. There's no reason to try and sway it unless Democrats can get concessions, which you would imagine would mean the speaker was either McCarthy or some moderate.

(and I think the bar is high enough for Republicans offering any concessions that there would be a lot of them, but that also means concessions are less likely)

why hadn't that been done already??

I mean they did some of it, MTG is supporting McCarthy for committee assignments.

But the people who just want the rule changes probably aren't enough to elect a speaker, and I don't think the Gaetz cohort actually have demands as opposed to loving things up because they can.

If you mean instead of McCarthy, I think they're worried that their compromise candidate won't get the votes and it'll make things even worse (well worse for Republicans which is obviously better).

One aspect I don’t see brought up about how the Republicans doing this to themselves is those 20 anti-McCarthy freaks have no threats to their power due to the GOP gerrymandering and voter suppression in their districts so hard. They can do whatever they want, the GOP anointed them god kings of their territories they have no threat of being voted out. That sucks, huh, McCarthy?

Most of them are in super safe districts but Boebert is doing this after winning by 500 votes

I can't emphasize enough that the HFC is basically the most fascist part of the Republican party and in no way will ever side with the Democratic Party on anything to give them any power whatsoever.

It depends on how you mean it. They won't vote for Democrats, but they probably would prefer Jeffries winning to McCarthy. In the first case they could give speeches about how the failing swamp Republicans threw the house to the Democrats instead of accepting the Trump movement and in the second they would look like losers. They just wouldn't do anything to make it happen.

The divide in the Republican party isn't really over how far right you should be, it's more like the extent to which a member of congress has the same job as Ben Shapiro.

edit: I mean the freedom caucus did just give Democrats two house seats by primarying the moderate incumbents with nazis.

Isn't a nonfunctioning House way more strategically valuable to the dems than any level of 'moderation' in the choice of speaker?

If Republicans were desperate enough to make a deal Democrats could probably get a lot out of it. I think it would be worth voting for a Republican speaker if they guaranteed a vote on anything that passes the senate with a filibuster proof majority, gave Democrats equal strength on committees, and raised the debt ceiling.

There's no pressure to make a deal until July, Republicans are the ones having a shitshow.

Do the Dems really need to argue in favor of the debt ceiling increase? It seems like most of the moderate Rs would grumble and be forced to support it anyway because it would cause massive economic issues and they are still beholden to businesses and billionaires.

And it seems like the House would be blamed for it.

Anything that passes the senate with 60 votes (like a clean debt ceiling increase) would easily pass a house vote, but the freedom caucus want changes that would let them stop the vote from happening

As for the Dems, is it accurate that any backroom concessions or promises McCarthy makes to anyone are just based on his word alone and there's no real legal basis that any of those promises be kept?

If so then the Dems would be idiots to accept any deal from McCarthy.

The house doesn't have rules until after there's a speaker, they would put the promises in the rules. The freedom caucus negotiations are mainly over house rules too.

It's primaries, MAGA/HFC is so influential because they have a disproportionate effect on the Republican primary in districts that actually elect Republicans.
