Now I'm curious what's the longest career of a running QB. Steve Young?

Young wasn’t the full time starter in San Francisco until 1991 and was concussed out of the league by early 1999, but drat if that peak wasn’t crazy. 2 MVPs, narrowly missing out on it being 3 in a row when he and Rice split the vote in 1994, and a bunch of fantastic passing numbers for the era.

kiimo posted:

yeah Elway was a great runner when the play broke down but I don't really remember a lot of designed running plays especially after Terrell Davis was a part of the mix but I have burned away a lot of brain cells over the years.

Yeah, Elway was mostly scrambling to extend plays and some occasional QB draws in big situations or near the goal line. He had some rushing yard every year, but usually around 200-250 yards where as Young had a number of 400~ yard years.

Randall Cunningham

He’s a strong contender. QB Eagles had a crazy peak from 87-90, but then he started getting hurt and didn’t really run much during his later years with the Vikings.

abelwingnut posted:

is culpepper considered a running qb? i remember him being more mobile than most, but nothing like a vick. maybe like young? young's peak was before i started watching football.

Yeah, Culpepper was a runner early on. He had at least 400 rushing yards in 5 straight years before getting hurt, and IIRC at one point held the single season record for combined rushing/passing yards by a QB. He was mainly hindered by the Vikings offense being him bombing to Randy Moss, the odd pass to random other guys (Nate Burelson, Kelley Campbell, etc) and no consistent running game once Robert Smith retired. Also lol Mike Tice.

Oh, and obviously Vick.

EDIT:

El Gallinero Gros posted:

Tarkenton and Bradshaw, also

Yeah, Tarkenton is the obvious old school answer for scrambling all over the place, and Terry did run a fair bit in his early years. The other name from that era is Bobby Douglass, who had 968 in a 14 game season playing for a lovely Bears team in 1972 (In part cause he wasn’t a great passer) and was very much a guy who ran over other dudes. Douglass was once described as a guy who could throw a pass through a wall… if he could actually hit the wall, which speaks of his accuracy lol

It has no effect on it. All the voting was done this past week after the regular season ended and before the playoff started, they just don’t announce the winners of stuff like Coach of the Year or MVP and such until the NFL Honors show the Thursday night before the Super Bowl.

Someone needs to leak whether Geno got an MVP vote or not.

The MVP voting is different this year, instead of each of the 50 voters just picking the one person they each want as MVP, they’re now ranking their top 5 choices. I doubt he’ll get many 1st or 2nd place votes, but Geno is almost guaranteed to get ranked in the 3rd-5th spot by a few voters. We won’t find out the final results until after the NFL Honors show the Thursday before the Super Bowl.
