Would you be my new best friends?

Just terrible news, so sad.

The Briscoes were incredible, and it's crazy to think how good they were in the Mid-2000s in ROH and then see them still wrestling at the highest possible level in 2022 and their incredible three match series with FTR. No age is the "right" age but 38? Jesus Christ.

And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.
Single handedly carried tag team wrestling on their backs for a decade. They blazed a trail that The Young Bucks, FTR, Usos, to name a few all have followed in a time when their art was not getting respected.

This is insane. Found out about this on Twitter through an otherwise innocuous tweet and had to rush to find out if it was true or not. Heartbreaking

I first saw them live in 2007 against Steen and Generico and it was such an awesome match. Tag team wrestling wouldn't have been anything similar to what it was these past 20 years without Jay

Here's a tribute that I think speaks to the incredible range of opponents and match styles they've had classics with. Them showing up during The Summer of Park was incredible and this match is amazing.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1EzaPDorGE

I've seen so many Briscoes matches live. The Boston Street Fight is one of the craziest matches I've seen in my life, live or on tape. The 2/3 falls matches in 2007 were all so fun. They faced Claudio and Sydal in a match that loving ruled so much and has been totally forgotten. They had a mind blowing tag with Rush and Dragon Lee in 2019 when everyone had forgotten about ROH. Their singles matches against each other were almost always amazing. (Their worst ROH singles match was merely "very good.") Jay's bloodbath vs Joe needs to be seen to be believed. One of the coolest moments I've had after a wrestling show was fist bumping both guys after a bloody Steel Cage Warfare match and just being all fired up even after a 5 hour show. They were both always super nice to me or my friends and there's lots of funny stories about them after shows. As I write this I keep thinking about great matches they've had that are forgotten. Vs AJ Styles and Sydal at the 100th show. Vs Joe and Styles at The Conclusion. The matches vs Aries and Strong. Their matches in NOAH. A career of incredible matches and some of the best promos.

Just unreal, he was my age, his birthday was next week.

Jay was an under-rated bleeder, between the Joe match & the image burned into my brain from the debut of Age of the Fall, with Jay raised upside down while Jimmy Jacobs stood directly below him, in a white suit gradually turning red with Jay's blood dripping on him. Absolutely loving insane, I still remember reading about it as it happened almost on forums, people were absolutely horrified by it all.

And as loathe as I am to say anything nice about Cornette, him recommending the Briscoes use Gimme Back My Bullets for entrance music was a masterstroke, a song that just perfectly captured them.

Jay was so great from so early on in his career, but when they returned from their hiatus in 2006 after Mark's(?) bike accident they really developed as characters & became some of the great indie promo guys. "Terry Funk ain't wear no god dang mouth piece". Even after I'd kind of moved away from following ROH, when their promos got uploaded it was worth watching, because they were real in a way few promos are.

Honestly too drat many matches to list off. There's stuff like Final Battle '06 with the Kings of Wrestling which is lost because that show was all about Homicide, but it's great. When ROH went to England in '07 there's a terrific Tag Title match with Naruki Doi & Shingo, there's a show in Osaka EDION Arena #2 where they defended the belts against Shingo & Susumu Yokosuka, Final Battle 2007 against Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black, there's a match in 2007 against the Murder/Motor City Machine Guns from Cabana's (then) last ROH show that was tremendous. And then a decade later they are doing a terrific Ladder War with SCU & The Bucks. There was a great match with MaruKen at Glory By Honor V, 2017 they went to Germany had a great match with Walter & Timothy Thatcher, 2015 at a Global Wars show you had a 10 man tag, Bullet Club of AJ, Good Brothers & Bucks against War Machine, Briscoes & Roddy that is so easy to overlook but really good pro wrestling. And that's just a fraction. They had a great match in '03 with AJ & Red, there was the battles they had with each other. I dunno, it's hard to think of ROH without thinking of the Briscoes. They were just always there, from the first show until the most recent one.

Only going to post a link to one match, but it feels an appropriate one. Jay vs Mark, 2005, some show in a bar's parking lot in a small town in Delaware near their home. This was when they were on hiatus, I think because they had gone to college to play football if I remember my ROH history. And so 10 months after their last match in ROH they turn up in shorts & trainers after a weekend of hard partying & basically just ask to have a short match. And they precede to beat the tar out of each other like only brothers or best friends can get away with. It's kind of reminiscent of Joe vs Necro Butcher but with a shooting star press from the top rope to the gravel.

One of the big reasons I bought front row tickets to an ROH show was so I could slap those goofy ROH thin metal banners just slightly off rhythm to Gimme Back My Bullets. The second, slightly less big reason was that it was Briscoes/Steenerico in a cage. I stopped watching ROH when Jay won the ROH Title, but felt like a proud dad when I read about it. I cant find the match but Jay vs Morishima stands out as they hit a superplex so loud, it echoed for what seemed like eternity.

It's testimony to just how great the Briscoes were that even with the relatively wide range of differing opinions and tastes and preferences in wrestling here in this forum, pretty much all of us here are going "oh yeah, they were really amazing", regardless of whether we watched them from day one, or later in their careers, or even if someone only discovered them shortly after Tony Khan purchased ROH. It shows you just how truly special they really were.

Would you be my new best friends?

Listening to Observer Live today and it really struck me for the first time beyond the intellectual level just how long The Briscoes had been tagging, how many different opponents they'd fought, how many absolute classics they'd had, and how I just kind of took it for granted when I should have been out of mind at how they could continually deliver that level of quality over and and over again in so many different ways.

You don't know what you've got till it's gone :(

Jay carrying ROH on his back for the 3 years between 2013-2016 as the rest of the top guys slowly started leaving the company, THEN going on with Mark to cement themselves as one of the greatest tag teams of all time is just an incredible feat in this sport. It's such an ugly and incredibly sad tragedy. It's been a rough 2022 for me in the last 6 months, dealing with multiple sudden unexpected deaths of friends & family in my personal life and this just further cements the fact we need to tell the people in our life we love them.

I can't say anything that hasn't been said, this is devastating.

What I can emphasize in my post here is that everyone who loves wrestling who doesn't know of the body of work of The Briscoes -- now is the time to show them. I had no idea who they were until maybe a year and a half ago and they became my favorite tag team, ever, period, very quickly.

Their presentation is completely genuine, wild, crazy, funny, and entertaining all at once -- seeing promos of Jay screaming threats into the camera while Mark changes the oil on his truck or eats something in the background and then jumping back into frame when he gets riled up again is a joy.

And in terms of their matches, they respect and cherish everything that I would hope wrestlers to do so for in wrestling. I've commented on their matches with FTR specifically but in all of their matches, what makes them, in my mind, the best tag team I've ever watched, is that they do not need bell or whistles or overbooking or to water down finishing moves for the sake of easy booking. They do near-falls the right way, both by them and by their opponents in this sense. They protect finishing moves and their match sequences are extremely visually telling. They are masters of the fundamentals of cutting down the ring and preventing hot tags against opponents. They always have an element of wild unpredictability and emotional surges which make their matches so well laid-out.

Every time I see them it feels like they are completely going to war with who they're fighting, and I've never seen a match of theirs that under-delivered. I really wish they had gotten to be more prominent on a bigger wrestling stage.

BIG BICEPS SHOHEI

The Steenerico feud has a real strong place in my heart. I had just started watching Ring of Honor at the very tail end of 2006. Went to my first show in February of 2007. The very next one was the very first PPV taping and I just kinda felt like I was a part of something really big and about to really blow up. That was my first time seeing Steen or Generico and they come out - make the challenge to the Briscoes, and that whole thing becomes the most invested I've ever been in a tag feud in my life. I was on the side of wanting to see Steenerico win - and in hindsight, boy I really wish Gabe balanced the feud a little better. But gently caress dude, what a ride it was. First time I ever realized also like "Wait...Tag Teams can be in the main event angle? Over the WORLD TITLE? Why does WWE not do this with their own tag division?!"

Ladder War was one of the sickest ladder matches I had ever seen also. Tremendous end to that feud, and a perfect transition to the next with the post match angle.
