The world of Vana'diel is a crossroads of magic, swords, and technology.
It is also a battlefield where those who believe in light face monsters that thrive in darkness.
The struggle centers on the control of crystals: sacred stones that are the fundamental source of all creation.

The monsters showed no mercy as they laid waste to beautiful towns, ravaged the land, and polluted the streams and rivers of Vana'diel. But the people united to seize victory from the jaws of the beastmen, earning themselves temporary respite from a life-and-death struggle.

Twenty years have passed since the people's great victory. But now, even as the memories of battle have begun to fade, a new evil grows inside Vana'diel... And it hungers for the power of the crystals.

Welcome to Let's Play Final Fantasy 11! Started in 2002 on the PS2 and PC, this was the first Final Fantasy MMO before God descended from on high and gave us the award winning Final Fantasy 14. More or less this was Squaresoft's take on the Everquest formula, sit in a camp with several other people and level by killing mobs that would slowly respawn. The story existed it was nothing stellar. Over time the game evolved beyond its roots, the story got better, the gameplay grew some teeth, eventually most of the game could even be done by oneself.

Maybe you've played Final Fantasy 14 and are curious about the first MMO.
Maybe you are a fan of Final Fantasy and just don't do MMOs.
Maybe you are just reading this for the schadenfreude.

No matter why you are here I hope to give you all a look into the stories of Final Fantasy 11 without the need to jump through the hoops of figuring out how to sign up for the drat thing, dealing with a UI that has stayed the same for 20 years, and mucking about with addons until the game is parsable. Despite its flaws I will absolutely go to bat and say this is a good game worth experiencing in some form.

So lets get down to how this will be going down!

I'll be doing this in screenshot format with some videos tossed in from time to time. FF11 is still a MMO and a slow one at that. Trust me when I say you do not want to see me flap about for hours looking for a drop or running through a zone for the 40th time killing crabs. I'll be doing the expansions in order for the most part, I'll do all the Job quests, probably show off some end game stuff, and If I hate myself enough I'll do the mini expansions as a low priority. I'll also do some behind the scenes and mechanical updates when the mood takes me. I have a little nothing written out ahead of time and it takes about a day to get the material for an update and a day to write the update itself. Expect one every three four days or so unless something goes really wrong. Because of how some of the reputation grinds for certain quests work this will take a year minimum to do everything. Yes I regret this.

You'll notice some evolution in my screenshot taking as we go and by the middle of Zilart the quality vastly improves as I finally get the text window fixed how I want it. As for music... Square Enix has been going hard on taking down music lately and some of FF11 is not up on their official youtube so I'm going to insert music retroactively with "gameplay" if I need to on a separate youtube account from whatever real stuff I put up incase it gets nuked. That mess won't be a priority so later on expect a lack of music at times. I'll update the crab count every expansion.

Year 1 Update: Hey everyone, thanks for reading this thing for a whole year! Boy has this been a learning experience as a first Let's Play. The worst idea for a first Let's Play! Chains I think is the quality I want to aim for through this thing. Audio issues in videos are fixed, text boxes are nicer, I interact with the story in a way where you can just ignore my text if you want. Yeah this feels about right. The biggest goal of this thing is to archive the story of Final Fantasy 11 in a way that doesn't depend on video, if I happen to tell a nice story for Visaria too that's great. Really I just want everyone to be able to enjoy this game and this feels like the best format for it. If you happen to be reading this for the first time, welcome and enjoy the backlog. If the first handful of updates don't grab you try jumping to Zilart or Chains and see if those updates are up your alley. You can always jump back later if you feel like learning about specific plot details. One thing I would like to do when I have time is go back (also going forward) and add related reading links to all the updates for easy looking up of things. Anyway, one year and 5,551 dead crabs. This next year should see us through Treasures and Wings at the very least. They are longer than Chains. Yay.

If you'd like help getting into the game or have questions about something please ask away. We have a FF11 thread over in MMO HMO full of people to answer questions as well.

Keep spoilers for anything we haven't seen yet in tags please. I've been through this before but I'm going to guess most readers probably have not. Same goes for FF14 if it gets brought up as a comparison.

Chapter 1: Adventurer

San d'Oria(Bagpipe warning)

The fortress city of San d'Oria lies to the north on the great continent on Quon. The beating heart of an ancient kingdom, it is home to a thousand legends past.
But now, her reign of glory is but a memory. Heroes raise shining swords to the heavens no more.
The sun has set on the kingdom of knights. An old lion, never to rise again... Thus do some dismiss her now.
Yet young Elvaan knights still venture proudly into the wilds of Vana'diel, determined to triumph over any foe.

On this particular day there comes a new adventurer, ready to make a name for herself in San d'Oria.
The king wishes to bolster his ranks, and Visaria has journeyed far to answer the call.

Should fortune favor her, bards across the land will sing of her exploits for generations to come.
Of course, she has only begun her rise to glory. No one can tell what her future holds.
Never before has she set foot within the Elvaan capital, but she is resolved to let nothing stand in her way.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My business, you see, it isn't doing very well. You can't step a hundred feet outside of town without spotting an orc and if that orc spots you back, you run. Maybe you'll make it to a guard or maybe you lose an arm or maybe you are lucky enough to be able to fight ONE of them off. Makes it difficult for people to travel. Unsafe public infrastructure is possibly the great issue of our times. Deplorable.

I'll put it bluntly, I'm a thief, I live off people traveling the roads. Thieving inside the cities is rough, lots of guards who should be out keeping the roads safe. So what's a rogue to do but rebrand and get some government kickbacks?

Adventurers wanted. See the world. Free room. Some pay. No, Training necessary! No official responsibility if you die. Must be able to hit things. Sign me up! Not like I'm doing anything anyway. At least I get a free place to sleep.

Making my way into the city I bump into a guard while looking for my new room in the port.

He tells me to watch it before realizing I'm a new recruit and apologizes for chastising me on my first day. Still however he stresses as a citizen of San d'Oria I should be more mindful. He would have finished the speech but a man in full plate walks down the steps and asks the guard what he is up to.

He smells of Gil.
He tells me to strengthen my sword arm and stature as a knight and that will best serve the glory of the kingdom. Yep. I'll get on that.
I smell Gil again. Ah his brother and sister have appeared...

"San d'Oria has more than enough soldiers already, brother. Speaking of which, should you not be training them, instead of bothering new recruits with talk of war?"
The knight is taken aback by this and both he and his sister scold, from what I can tell, the priest who won the worst hat competition.
He doubles down and says the ranks of the army could swell to bursting and victory would still be far. The knight bites back that numbers are better than his misguided tactics.
I seem to have found out why I got laid off within my first several minutes in the city.
"My tactics, misguided? Oh, that is rich! Tell me of the tactics that lost an entire company in Batallia Downs the other day?"
Yep, just gonna stand here.
"It's good you're so fond of talking, as I've never seen you wield a sword! Better to shout orders from the rear than reveal your ineptitude in actual combat!"
Just gonna stand here with this guard who is definitely not paid enough for this.
Their sister steps in and tells them to stop their nonsense. They snipe some insults at each other on the way out.

She apologizes for her brothers and tells me to bring glory to the kingdom before walking off.

The guard assures me they are actually the closest of brothers and asks if I need any directions. I decline and he gives me a voucher for 50 gil to hand to some lady to make sure I understand how to turn in things to people. The voucher lady tells me to head to the town gates for work or some basic training.

Wonderful where is my room?

Mog House

Ah it is empty save for a moogle. Well better than nothing. He calls me master and manages my house. Here I can store all sorts of stuff even change jobs incase I ever want to not be a cutpurse in the middle of a society of knights. In my time as a proto-adventurer I've picked up fist fighting like a Monk, swinging heavy chunks of metal like a Warrior, and Thieving obviously. Though I know no magic myself how hard could it be to be a White, Red, or Black Mage? You go to a magic shop buy some scrolls and rub them on your face until you learn to set stuff on fire... or like unset things on fire...

Anyway tonight I sleep on the floor, tomorrow I'll buy myself a bed.

My moogle has informed me a bed costs 50000 gil. Beds are for earners apparently. I'm going to actually have to work aren't I?

Ronfaure

Fine lets get our bearings. Knife? check. Armor? That is also for earners. I head out of town and hunt a few(dozen) rabbits. Some wild sheep. Tussle with an orc or two. In total from the rabbit meat and pelts I didn't totally destroy in my stabbings I made about 200 gil.

Okay message received I'll go pick up work from the knights.
Beat up some orcs and take their axes as proof.

Got it. Already done. Pay me.

Pay is also for earners. No I get another mission as a reward and if I do this one maybe the next one actually pays. Before the anger truely hits me a young man inserts his way into our conversation. He prays the lord knight answer if Queen Leaute truly passed away 15 years ago and what was the cause of her death.

Grilau has the proper reaction of who the hell are you and why are you asking that? The man reveals he has traveled far to see her highness. Ok sure.

She died 15 years ago to a rare illness that wasn't able to be cured. He seems to accept this. Even if she was alive he'd never see the inside of the Chateau d'Oraguille as a mere adventurer.
I feel a slight sting, no idea why.
He asks the name of her illness and the knight tells him that it was above her paygrade to know the name of it. He thanks her for her time and wanders off.

He seemed to know the queen personally but was unaware of her death, how bizarre. Anyway my job is done for now. They'll see about getting me better work.

It is very clear to me I got swindled by words like fame and payment. I'm better off hunting big game than helping to advance society. This is fine. As long as I look like I'm working, shuffle some papers, shake my fist at some orcs, they will let me keep my room and talking pillow.

There is however one issue with my 'try to make my life slightly better' plan though. I can barely deal with the dumber orcs that wander too close to town by myself how am I gonna fight something meaner than that? Oh look a convenient flier! "Trusts! Summon alter-egos of your acquaintances to help you through the hellscape that is life! Powered by friendship and bonds! Mostly free!"

I head over to a man named Gondebaud who explains the program to me. He a member of the Jeuno Institute of Magic Studies assigned to more or less test a new form of incantation. Probably dangerous if done wrong but that is what adventurers are for.

I'm to head to the northern city gate and look for a man who runs mock skirmishes called "Ballista". Apparently some call this guy the "grand hero of San d'Oria". He stepped up to be the first involved. Safety and such. Windurst and Bastok also have trust programs running but that will have to wait for another day. First I need to go find this Excenmille fellow and hand him a letter of recommendation.

Sometime, Somewhere

I find him no problem. I expected grander honestly.

He introduces himself as Excenmille M Aurchiat overseer of all Conflict-related matters.

Wait what bonds?

Huh it worked, there is two of him now.

Yep, two of him. Cool. He was actually surprised it worked. He only managed to get it to work one other time with his oldest pal Rahal, leader of the royal knights. Odd. I'm sure this was just a coincidence. I got what I came for and I head back to Gondebaud to report. From now on I should be able to use this trust magic with anyone my bond is deep enough with according to the guide book. The Institute has a few helpful alter-egos to hand out as well.

Phew. Excenmille did mention Rahal, I'll swing by and grab his alter-ego as well. If it worked with Excenmille it will probably work for Rahal.

Chapter 2: Your Place In The World

Long, long ago, an ancient race, descended from the gods, flourished in Vana'diel.
They traveled through the sky, extracted gold from stones, and gave birth to grasslands across the world.

But one day, they decided to build a pathway to the divine entrance of paradise.
Enraged by such a brazen display of insolence, the holy gatekeeper destroyed their path and cast their homes to the bottom of the sea.

Shortly thereafter, the goddess Altana awakened and saw the ruin that had once been Vana'diel. Saddened, She wept five divine tears.
When the five tears fell upon the earth, they gave life to the five races of Vana'diel.

But the god Promathia saw this from His place in the shadows.
Promathia saw fit to condemn Her work, cursing the people with eternal conflict amongst themselves.
He created terrible beasts and spread them across the world, commanding them to fight the people of Vana'diel and occupy their minds.
Never again would they think to open the gate of the gods.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vana'diel March

Last time we had a bunch of proper nouns. Lets make some sense of them.

Here's a map of the Middle Lands and the Near East. We will be spending a lot of time here and I'll fill in some spots as we go. As a sense of scale of the world, San d'Oria is built on the lake above it's name on the map. Most trade in San d'Oria is done with airship, some is done by traditional ship with the aid of Selbina to the south.

Bastok far to the south of San d'Oria is famous for it's mythril mines and metal refining technologies. Home to mostly Humes and Galka, it elects a president every few years. Specifically a Hume president. The land itself is shite. The city is overcrowded and most of the mining profits go towards food.

Windurst was founded when 5 Tarutaru tribes came together to form a federation. Post war 20 years ago the Mithra formally joined as hunters, labor, and mercenaries during the rebuilding process. Food is plenty, life is good, and magic is forefront in this nation. A majority of the army are magical constructs. You'd think a bunch of wizards would be complete poo poo to each other, but no, the Mithra and Tarutaru respect each other and things just kinda work.

The Grand Dutchy of Jueno is literally the center of the world and as such all airships pass through it. As a result it is rich and powerful and probably has a bunch of skeletons in the basement; literally and metaphorically.

Plaguing all these nations are Beastmen of various sorts. In the Middle Lands you'll find yourself a friendly Goblin every once in a while. The Orcs, Gigas, Quadav, and Yagudo can not be reasoned with nor would anyone want to.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Today I've decided to take a little walk to Selbina, casually maiming wildlife along the way. It's actually quite a trip. What's in Selbina? A ship to Mhaura, crabs, maybe work.

It nearly slipped my mind that as an adventurer I get access to a bunch of nifty resources like access to teleporting crystals in major cities and field books that allow me to zoop into the field for a small fee. Can't zoop where I haven't been yet though so I need to do some walking to gather my zoops.

While cleaving my way through the sands I find a small ruby off a leech, probably worth something, its a bloody ruby after all. I pocket it and make it to Selbina while dodging desert goblins.

Selbina

Upon entering the town a fellow by the entrance inquires if I'm an adventurer.

You see? Work! I knew it!

Looks like the mayor needs something done.

Huh he needs a specific adventurer... Specifically one by the name of Visaria. Never heard of her.

Alright you got my attention, I'll grab the bee pollen and meet with this Gilgamesh.

The best place to find bees is down closer to Bastok so I make a little detour and grab the Bastok teleports. I also take the opportunity to grab some real armor, I'm sure Gilgamesh will pay me, he has Gil in his name.

Please do not mock my subligar.

The shock is more that I got paid rather than Gilgamesh being a pirate, a pirate is just a sea thief. But also yeah how have you heard of me?

The first word out of her mouth when she woke up was my name. What a mystery we have indeed. Anyhow she's on a hunger strike until I get myself on a boat over to Norg, Gilgamesh will meet me there later. The mayor begs me not to say anything to anyone about him helping a pirate. Some kind of thief honor code or something prevents me from extorting him and besides the pirates keep the waters safe-ish.

My payment was a slip of paper, the good kind the kind where I give it to a guy by the shore and he teaches me how to have a sub job. If you don't do this then you have to collect some monster drops, 2 out of 3 aren't bad but one in a past life has left deep scars on my soul. 7 hours before the second one because of not noticing a full bag when the first one dropped and rotted.

Hey look at that Visaria can now be two jobs at a time! Better level everything to 50 real quick!

*death happens*

Righto boat to Norg!

Norg

Norg is a pirate den built in a cave. Not quite a town but it has the basics. Quite nice for what it is really. Honestly some of the nicest people in the land. I make my way to Gilgamesh's office.

As soon as the girl spots me she sprints to me calling me "Master".

Look kid I have no idea what you are talking about.

Gilgamesh is just as confused as I am. She is kind enough to explain she's from the future and hasn't been born yet. Cool. So lets go down the list of questions we all have. How? Why? From where? Why?

Her name is Iroha, she is from the Far East, the guardian of Raisenjima Sanctorium with a strong link to the heavens. The spirits set her adrift to prevent the darkness that has engulfed her era.

The young gentleman with us asks if the beastmen end up victorious in that era or if its something more nefarious.

Iroha asks my permission to show them our reality. Yeah kid, sure. Go for it.

To find me. So it spit her out here.

She hands me an orb. Follow it's guidance and it will lead unfailingly to her time. You know where she is the only one left alive.

Gilgamesh sees the problem with this and Iroha says I have the capacity to experience both a future with and without the Emptiness... and then she starts to collapse.

And then she poofs out of existence...

The young man will see if his agents can pick up any information and heads off. Gilgamesh can't make heads or tails of any of this. I just wanted to take a walk.

After a bit Gilgamesh collects all his thoughts and tells me to find his daughter Lion who ran off trying to get Windurst, Bastok, and San d'Oria to do something with the Beastmen several days ago. She's apparently the thinker between the two of them. I'll find her eventually in my bumbling around.

Still I do feel a little bad for Iroha. It's nothing I have to worry about currently but I'm kinda responsible for the kid... I think? Uggggh... What was I doing before this?

Getting on a boat to Mhaura to go to Windurst to get a teleport to go back home to work for no pay.

Voyager

I wasn't kidding when I said the pirates keep the seas safe-ish. The boat ride is dangerous, only a fool would go above deck to be assaulted by krakens and other sea horrors. I stay bellow deck, I hear them moving up there though. Some fool that also joined the ride ran up stairs during a storm, I never saw him again.

How awful.

Mhaura is oddly enough a super busy town due to Ambuscade. Monthly trial fights for very strong weapons and armor. Above my paygrade right now.

Windurst

Anyway Windurst is nice but far too large for a place full of smalls, hell even for talls. While wandering around gathering my zoops the ruby in my pocket starts jiggling as I walk by a house. Curious, I open the door and peek in.

The inhabitant is not happy to see me and starts shooing me off before noticing the ruby in my hand. I show it to him and he begins investigating it.

Seems like its a Carbuncle's ruby and it is talking to him. After what I've seen the past couple days, I'm just gonna go ahead and believe him. He tells me to close my eyes and open my heart. He tells me to let down my guard and accept everything around me.

Seek and gather... the seven colors... that cover the sky... and embrace the earth...

Ajido doesn't seem to think its a trap and doesn't sense much energy coming from the thing. He does warn me however that the voices won't always be weak ones if I repeat this trick.

Looks like I need to go look for colors for the talking rock on the way home.

Also, subligars are an honored tradition.

I would not trust Greg with having a child. Pirate Gilgamesh has at least proven to me that he can keep one alive and away from the pile of legendary blades long enough to become an adult.

Its kind of shocking that this game's plot kicks into gear with the arrival of a woman who is both from the apocalyptic future and a land so far on the other side of the world its not even on your map and she actually already knows you. Its a left field turn for sure after the first update was all relatively standard Medieval Politics Stuff. It reminds me of 1990s X-Men and how crazy they could get when something came along to interrupt their normal Mutant Civil Rights stuff. By comparison FF14's Start Of The Real Story twist that there's some sort of God War going on behind the scenes of the Normal War is relatively mundane.

I'm curious to see if the general statement that nobody would or could treat with this game's Beast Tribes is mechanical fact and they're Always Enemies like a lot of WoW's sentient races or if they'll eventually be people you can deal with as in 14.

Sadly the subligar doesn't stick around too long. Added Blue Mage and Corsair to the list, coincidentally they are my mains on my original character along with Pup.

Thinking on it a bit this morning, Iroha seems to be a true an artifact of her time. The early 00's, when XI came out, was the golden age of the "Magical Girlfriend Appears To Change My Ordinary Life," genre in Otaku Media. It was always a strong sub-genre, but the early 00s saw the debut and dominance of some major pillars that are still remembered and influential today, like Familiar of Zero, Shakugan no Shana, A Certain Magical Index, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Fate/Stay Night, Tsukihime, and even the ascent of Bleach to Shounen Jump's "Big Three." Anime, Manga, Light Novels and Visual Novels were all ruled over by this type of story, and I think Iroha fits the mold.

The fact that your "ordinary life" in this case is an adventurer in a fantasy world is a twist on the genre, but not an unprecedented one.

Would the story be better as I put it here or if we went straight to update 3 instead of meeting Gilgamesh? I'm curious about the answer to this after the next update.

What Final Fantasy 11 did is fairly unique and 9 updates from now I'll try and give my thoughts on it.

Chapter 3: I Can Hear A Rainbow

The beastmen thrived in the ensuing era of darkness.
But the demihuman Galka and Mithra, blessed with bodies powerful enough to resist the advances of the beastmen, grew in number as well.
They fought tooth and nail to cast the hordes from their homelands in an age of unending battle and chaos.

The Tarutaru race grew weary of the never-ending conflict, and wandered the world in search of peace.
After discovering an uncharted continent, they named the land Windurst and settled down to build a brighter future for their kin.

Several decades after the Tarutaru's long journey had come to an end, a young Tarutaru girl lost her way in one of the mysterious towers scattered across the outskirts of Windurst.
It was there that the secrets of magic were revealed to her, and this knowledge would spread to her entire race.
The Tarutaru worked as one to harness and understand the mysterious power that had been given to them.
So began the Great Age of Magic.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stepping outside town the ruby starts to glow and float the color of the clear sky. Seems like we need to hunt down weather. Rain, thunder, wind, snow, sand storm, and heat wave. Heat wave is by far the rarest but with a little luck sitting in Selbina I find one. Finally after a bunch of globetrotting I see a thunderstorm brew in Jugner and let the gem absorb the last of its light.

The Ruby shatters and a... thing appears. It flies off behind me towards La Theine and tells me to follow. I shrug, I'm in it this far might as well see it to the end. I follow it to a nook in the hills, a circle of standing stones.

Prelude

It calls itself Carbuncle one of "several new forces" here in Vana'diel. It became a crystal and was divided into shards falling into the hands of beasts and people alike as the world changed around it.

And then I got it and it knew I needed it. Gonna be honest that strong overbearing need you felt was probably the lack of a bed talking little friend.

Carbuncle will lend me some of it's power, fight by my side, and watch over me. It does however demand a labor, to visit ancient beings that live in far away lands and places of legend.

It will extend a bridge between people of the present and the beings of ages past.

Well guess I'm a Summoner now.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I head back to San d'Oria. It feels like ages since I've been home.

Lets see if they have a job for me.

What luck, a job just for me! Head to King Ranperre's Tomb and confirm reports of grave robbers and vandals.

Easy as long as you don't go too deep into the ruins. The tomb was built as a monument to King Ranperre who extinguished the country's post golden age civil war 200 years ago. Visitors come to pay respects and often report strange shadows and disturbed graves.

As the new groundskeeper I head in. Goblins, normal. Undead, normal. Bats the size of your head, normal. Oh wait! I swat a bat down. Impaled by one of its fangs seems to be a scale from some orc armor. That is something I guess. I go to check on the king's grave itself.

I hear foot steps coming and duck behind the grave quickly.

"King Ranperre... It is I, Rochefogne. Does Your Majesty not remember me? Often in youth did I hear stories of Your Majesty's glorious reign. I longed to grow into a man like the great Dragon King."

My thief senses make me nudge a stone at the mention of a relic and he notices me.

And off they go. Well I have proof orcs were here from the bats. I guess the job is done.

Grilau confirms what I've found and is puzzled at what the orcs would want with the tomb. I'm not to speak to anyone of this.

Wasn't planning on it. No pay received. I go sleep it off.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next day I head back to Grilau for work. She has no time for me today.

Never mind she actually really needs helping hands right now. News from the cathedral is a boy who was training to be a friar also wandered near Ghelsba and did not return. His name was Tedimout. The Royal Knights would go to the rescue, but Prince Trion is away in the north and can't give the order.

Anxiety

I place my forehead into my palm.

Prince Pieuje is in earnest deliberations over whether to send Temple Knights instead she says. "It seems his efforts are focused upon saving the child, but..."
"But no matter. We need knowledge. I want you to go to the cathedral and ask what the boy looks like."

If I had any illusion that this was a glorious nation of knights it would have been shattered completely. I head to the cathedral in disgust.

The priest asks if I'm here for the sermon on the Gates of Paradise. No, no I am not here for the sermon on the Gates of Paradise. I'm here to figure out what this missing kid of yours looks like so I can go kick down a door in an orc fortress to see if he's in there or if its just some other random kid that got grabbed and we still have a missing kid problem on our hands. Yes I could just ask his bloody name but chances are at this point I'm looking for a dead body. Goddess drat it.

"Altana bless thee! Yes, Tedimout was a friar in training."

...is a friar in training.

"Oft would he enter the woods of Ronfaure in search of wild herbs..."

The priest goes on about things I already know or are inconsequential. Honestly this couldn't get any worse.

"The horror he must be facing now... Each morning and night I pray to the Goddess of the Dawn to deliver him from their clutches! Why, Prince Pieuje! And, Papsque Shamonde!"

I will not commit regicide today... I will not commit regicide today...

I. Will. Not. Commit. Regicide. TODAY!

I'm having a bad day

I go to the orc stronghold. I kill a few orcs for a key and open the holding pens.

An ambush... I dispatch them quickly and continue searching until I find a hut.

"Wait! You are the adventurer that Pieuje sent, are you not? Bravely have you fought against the orcs. Well done!"

After taking a deep breath I acknowledge that at least this prince actually came. We open the hut.

We confirm this is the boy we are looking for and Trion brings the kid home informing the guards of my deeds. I am now an adventurer of rank 2 and get a certificate saying as much(only good in San d'Oria). I am paid 1000 gil for my efforts.

This kingdom is a farce.

WARNING

Miscellaneous Chapter 1: Gameplay

Vana'diel March

This seems as good a time as any to explain the actual game.

Lets start with creating a character. You have a choice of Tarutaru, Galka, Hume, Elvaan, and Mithra. Galka can only be male and Mithra can only be female. Each race has unique starting stats. Once upon a time when numbers were small picking for 3 vs 8 INT was an actual consideration. The level 74 artifact armor +1 for Black Mage has 8 INT total on the set for example. If you chose a race that matches your nation you get a level 1 ring that is a nice little boost of stats. Finally during character creation you pick your class from the starting 6.

At the start of the game you have the choice of what your nation is. Bastok, Windurst, or San d'Oria. This choice actually really matters unlike Final Fantasy 14. The story for each nation, except for certain important world plot things, are all different. This is true for the base game, the first expansion, and the fourth expansion. You could go and start in Windurst and have a completely different story from Visaria. I will go over the other story paths in another one of these side updates much much later for those who want to know about them.

There is nothing forcing you to do the story aside from some unique powerful gear from finishing an expansion and high level raids of bosses from the story. If you simply wish just go level and ignore the story you absolutely can and you can pretty much hit the peak of power without it. Certain expansions do unlock various endgame activities one might want to try though and of course you'll need to do the level uncap quests.

So when can you do expansions? The second you get in game! There are some small level requirements and usually a minimum reputation and travel through places you shouldn't be.

Iroha in our last update? That is the last second to last mini expansion of Final Fantasy 11. You do not meet Gilgamesh until the first expansion normally and it doesn't take into account your Iroha time together. Here with Iroha he gives you something as important as a Sub Job voucher which is something you'd normally have to deal with at level 20ish.

Iroha's shenanigans also gives access to large permanent experience boosts and skill gain boosts. You'll get a vendor with tons of food, ammo, keys, and potions as well. Normally all of those things are hard to come by. Yes ammo is hard to get. The quests even allow you to summon more trusts at a time and the ability to use trusts in boss fights. All the quality of life you want, just there for the taking!

So yeah you can do anything in any order. As such I do have to record some things ahead of when we get there because as soon as you walk into Jeuno you get 2 mini expansions worth of intro cutscenes and the third expansion's opening. Hell the first time you walk into Northern San d'Oria you get a cutscene for the fifth expansion!

I will talk more about how the story weaves new into old in a later update.

Combat... Think of combat as Final Fantasy 12 but without the gambits. You select a target and your auto attack starts. From a drop down list you can then cast magic, shoot your ranged weapon, use class abilities, use items, or use weapon skills. As you attack and get hit you gain TP, at 1000 TP you can use a weapon skill which is a powerful attack. TP goes up to 3000 and the weapon skill is stronger the higher the TP. Monsters also get TP, so that white mage slapping with its club is a double edged sword.

Skill is gained as you attack things, more skill in a weapon gives a better chance to hit and lets you learn new weapon skills. Magics and defensive type things like evasion also have skill.

To cast a spell you use MP. You have Elemental, Dark, Blue, Healing, Enfeebling, Enhancing, and Divine magics. Ninjitsu, Geomancy, and Summoning are also skills but that is fake magic. Magic is learned by either going to a magic shop and buying it or finding a scroll as a drop. The auction house has scrolls from both sources.

You can change Jobs any time in the mog house. To unlock anything past the first 6 you need to do one or two quests for each Job. As the Job levels it gets a few extra quests for class specific armor called Artifact(AF). Quests are never popped up on a screen for you, you need to look them up or talk to people. In modern days however we do have a tutorial like system that gives you breadcrumbs of what to do to at least start an important quest.

Roles of Jobs include: Damage, Support, Healing, and Tanking. Sometimes a Job is more than one of these. Nerds will tell you there are more roles. They are right but they are nerds. A party fits 6 people or 1 person and 5 trusts. You can use trusts with other people too, trusts all have classes and unique AIs. You have a main Job that can go up to level 99 and a Sub Job that goes up to level 49. There are ways to break this level cap further that we will get to another time. You get everything except the one hour ability of your Sub Job for its level. Your one hour ability is extremely powerful but has a one hour cooldown hence the name. It used to be two hours and some enemies can spam them. Nowadays we are cool enough to get a second different one hour on each class at high levels.

Spells, weapon skills, and abilities can be made into macros which can and should be used whenever possible unlike Final Fantasy 14. The menu is slow, macros are fast. There are 100's of spells! Take care of your brain, make a button! At the start Final Fantasy 11 is a slow game, slower than 14. At max level? I think its faster than 14 depending on the classes and buffs involved.

After using a weapon skill you can start a chain with another player or with yourself if you are fast enough, the window is only a few seconds to get another 1000 TP. If someone(or yourself) chains a weapon skill it does a little extra damage and extends the chain depending on the type of weapon skill used. Once the second weapon skill has been used and the proper chain starts you can magic burst the specific element(depends on what weapon skills were used) of the chain for massive magic damage.

Easy right? Nowadays we have helpful THIRD PARTY TOOLS to help us with this! Back in the day you had only macros to call it out and try to time it.

I think that sums up basic gameplay? Kill crabs, get xp, level. Sometimes maybe do a quest.

Gear and the end game will be its own post... I'm not ready to try and explain it. I can say this for now, 11 and 14 are two wildly different games.

Xerophyte posted:

A very slow rhythm game, since getting to 1000 TP for a weapon skill takes (used to take?) around a minute of auto attacks. Also the windows for chaining weapon skills and getting magic bursts are maybe 3s long? Very unsure on the exact timings, it's been forever.

Today with proper gear you can hit 1000 TP in 2 auto rounds. My Blue Mage averages around 3 seconds for 1000 TP and I know my Corsair in melee is even faster(Gun shots do 1200 TP but come out slower). Even with that TP gain self skill chains are hard to get in because the window is so small.

So how is this possible? Haste cap, Triple attack/shot, TP restored after using TP passives, TP gain on hit multiplier passives. Some jobs can even Quadruple Attack for 8 hits in one auto attack if dual wielding(at like a 1-3% chance).

If you add in just one other human you are constantly pinging off each other. Trusts depending on their AI can set you up, close a skill chain, burst one, or just spam their TP skills at 1000 TP ruining your chain.

One day I promise Visaria will reach these heights and there will probably be video of it.

Anyway good post about the hill that was climbed both ways in the snow.

Chapter 4: A Mockery Of Chivalry

Empowered by their expanding magical abilities, the Tarutaru united themselves as the Federation of Windurst, and worked to drive the hordes of Yagudo beastmen from their lands.
The Tarutaru prospered, unified by their knowledge of magic and the solidarity of a new federation. It was a glorious age for their people.

But revealed secrets cannot be suppressed, and the knowledge of magic slowly spread to all the people of Vana'diel.
Within a short time, other races - and even beastmen - began to employ magic techniques for themselves.

Filled with regret, the Tarutaru entered an era of isolation.
They closed their borders to all but their longtime friends, the Mithra.
And so, a once-proud civilization became more and more out of touch with the rest of the world.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I take a walk to cool my heels. I'm going to think of it like this: I am the expendable workaround that keeps things from burning down in situations like these. It doesn't feel good at all and Altana knows I'm probably not getting any credit in anyone's eyes.

Why do I even care about this? It isn't like I'm a knight. I signed up for this out of greed anyway. Not wanting to sleep in a bush, not wanting to steal from crates, not wanting to die to undead and beastmen.

I spot an old man on a watch tower with a thousand-yard stare. He glances down and we briefly make eye contact. This is where I am at with my life right now, I'm walking up the stairs to the tower because this man seems like he could give me the affirmation I crave.

"It is not by cogs nor levers nor even the mightiest of magicks that protect this kingdom of San d'Oria."

...

"No. We Elvaan live by the power of the sword alone. Our blades defend our borders."

...

"If you would strengthen your sword arm and learn something of the art, then accept my challenge. What say you?"

I've had my fill of knights for one life.

"Then become something more than a knight."

He asks for me to get a revival tree root from King Ranperre's Tomb. They drop off all sorts of undead any place you look though. He asks for me to do this to prove I won't die horribly in the tasks to come.

And so I do as he asks, not really thinking too hard about it.

"Ah, I see I was right about you. You've proven your mettle today. Further tempering may forge you into a hero among adventurers. In recognition of your success I offer this sword. Train diligently and grow strong."

I take the sword and the next task.

"I'd like you to go to Ordelle's Caves. You'll find the entrance in a valley in La Theine Plateau. Those caves are also called the "Body Caves". Know you why?"

Nope.

"It is because the caves are shaped much like the body of a person. Where in a body would lie a belly, in the caves flows a waterfall of much beauty. I would have you visit that waterfall and return hither with some type of proof."

If nothing else this has been a nice little distraction from having to deal with the disfunction of the system. Speaking of which I'm to take part in rescue drills out in La Theine. I'll drop by the cave once I finish.

La Theine Plateau is south of San d'Oria and the quickest way to my assignment is to walk. Which is fine, sometimes you want to take in the beauty of the world. You know, before it comes crashing down on you.

My contact tells me to head to the other side of the ravine and start down the cliff to find my next contact.

I am passed along to 2 other people until I make it to the instructor Vicorpasse, squad captain in the Temple Knights. Unfortunately we can't do rescue drills because one of the "injured" soldiers has gone missing. My assistance in finding him would be appreciated.

Goddess drat it. The fool's name is Ruillont. I go off and question the rest of the squad...

None of them are of much use, however, this one has spotted a cave and wonders if Ruillont is inside. No one else is going in so it is all me.

A dozen steps into the cave and a dozen more to my left is a man hiding behind a rock. That's my idiot.

"Imagine, a knight rescued by some passerby! Why, my family would be mocked for generations to come! Confound it if only I had my sword, I'd cut through these fiends single handedly..."

I head back into the cave. I'm looking for the waterfall. Compared to the entrance it actually is dangerous deeper inside but I am strong enough that most beasts in here know better than to test me... Or maybe its just my intense aura of hate.

I find the waterfall and take some dew as proof. It is quite pretty, not enough to quell my rage, but nice all the same.

I return to town and hand in the piece of paper to the gate guard not waiting for a reply. I head back to the tower and hand over the dew. Show me what a knight can be old man.

He hands me a book for my last task, everything else is up to me. He bids me farewell.

Let's see...

The towers on the eastern and western walls? I go and poke around the knights on the wall until I find one and then the other, both handing me a book.

From the island lake, south runs the flow.
Where it goes, only beastmen know.
There is one whose body breaks. Death it deals and death it reaps.
And in the sky a beacon makes, where it sits the knight's soul sleeps.

This gives me nothing to go on... An island lake and beastmen...
I'll put this in my pocket for now. Apparently something urgent has come up.

Chateu d'Oraguile

The Chateu d'Oraguile is home to the royal family so one doesn't usually just wander in without an invite. Halver here is in charge of the place.

"Our scouts say the beastmen are rising again... Not just here, but in lands abroad. We want you to go to Bastok and Windurst and see how they fare."

I've been promoted to diplomat I guess. He hands me a letter of introduction. I am to hand it to our consulates within the cities and they'll give me further orders. This is actually fine with me, it can't be worse that the muck I've been wading through here.

Halver tells me to take care and come home safe. I feel like I'm forgetting something... Oh right Lion.

So she's already gone. Darn.

Thanks Halver, I actually kind of like you. I'll be heading to Windurst first.

Chapter 5: An Omen

The use of magic brought both happiness and conflict to the other races of Vana'diel.
Perhaps the most satisfied were the proud Elvaan, who made their home in the Kingdom of San d'Oria in the northern reaches of the old continent.
With the Tarutaru monopoly on magic broken, the Elvaan were able to create powerful orders of knights who feared no adversary.

Beastmen strongholds and Tarutaru villages alike fell before the power of the knights of San d'Oria. Within a short time, nearly the entire Quon continent had come under San d'Orian control.

But pride comes before the fall.
The nation of Bastok, founded by the Hume and Galka races, lay on the southern edge of the Quon continent.
Fortified by the growing economic and intelligence-gathering abilities of the Hume race, Bastokan forces crushed the elite San d'Orian knights at the Second Battle of Konschtat.
Cutting-edge firearms technology turned the tide of battle and cemented victory for the people of Bastok.
This humiliating defeat sent the Kingdom of San d'Oria into an age of internal turmoil and civil war.
Piece by piece, territories that the Elvaan had conquered slipped from their grasps.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Windurst

Windurst is a bit of a mess to navigate but I manage to find the consulate.

I'll be honest, I dislike a lot of the people I work with. Most of the people I work with. The guy in charge here...

This son of a bitch is at the top of my list.

I see several problems with this plan but, whatever man, sure.

Heaven's Tower

poo poo, I found my girl on accident. I bring up Gilgamesh telling me to look for her and she mentions she has been looking into some portals "linked to another dimension". Sounds connected to Iroha to me! We agree to catch each other at the Crag of Holla after we are done with these current beastmen shenanigans.

Righto, shield delivery.

I head to the tower office and ask the secretary Kupipi for the package. She, like Excenmille, is involved in the trust program and I form a pact with her while I'm here.

Oh Kupipi... I'm about to make so many problems happen honey. Before I leave Semih Lafihna, one of the Star Sybyl's personal guards, reassures me everything will be fine and hands me a copy of her trust cipher.

I give off good vibes to everyone I meet. I just can't help it. But no really I'm about to make paperwork happen.

And with that I go off to assassinate a few beastmen and drop off a shield.

I kill a man for his shield and do it again on the way out for a second one.

I hand off the delivery to the treasure room guard. Mission accomplished, back to Windurst before anyone finds out what I did.

"FOOL!"

I drop the shields from my bag on the desk.

Bastok

I teleport to Bastok and head for the consulate. Or I would have, had I not bumped into a glum looking Galka kid.

We head into his house and he tells me I reminded him of a visitor he had recently. You see Werei... set out on his journey of rebirth. The kid knew it was coming sooner or later, he wasn't feeling well and would hide it when they had visitors drop by. He tells me the story about the visit.

For some context apparently this old Galka was the oldest living Galka and Volker is the leader of the Mythril Musketeers. He is said to have landed the final blow on the Shadow Lord ending the war 20 years ago. Impressive!

He heard there was a dark knight who was investigating the Palborough Mines. Was it Zeid? Zeid created his own version of the art that has been passed down since the glory days of Altepa. It's not something you master with skill alone. Rumor was that the dark knight was powerful and there's not a whole bunch of them around nowadays anyhow, so maybe?

"It is said only the few that can tame the dark flames that burn in their soul, feeding on their sorrow and hatred are chosen."

Lord knows I have enough darkness in me to attempt it. I have work to do for now though.

Rumor has it the beastmen are rallying behind a new leader and we need to investigate while cooperating with Bastok in the process.

You know what compared to everything else I've done. Right on, sure, let me at 'em coach. I can look for Zeid while I'm there too. Lets go find Pius and get this train rolling.

If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all. I smile, nod, and head to the eatery.

So Bastok is racist and high up it's rear end, Windurst is cowardly and insular, and San d'Oria is a royal bureaucratic mess that doesn't know it is way past it's prime.

The mines are full of low level Quadav. I press though...

Is that good? I think I'm supposed to head into that.

Grohm mentioned a circle, this must be it. I've made my peace with the world. In I go!

Look a boss fight!

A demon? It seems a woman is already fighting it.

The dragon it summons overpowers her. I have to head in before it finishes her.

I take out the Seeker first, then turn my attention to the dragon.

I bring it down. Nice and easy. Oh hey it's Lion.

Anxiety

She says it's a nether beast from the Northlands, their kind hasn't been seen since the Shadow Lord was destroyed and the Northlands sealed.

Then what the hell is it doing here with this eyeball?

The eyeball gives us some final words answering just that...

That's not great. Pretty bad even.

Ayame is fine, little bit of wounded pride but she'll walk it off. Also having her here will help prove the pirate and the expendable adventurer's story to the powers that be.

She introduces herself to us and thanks me. Like Volker and Zeid who I heard about from Gumbah, Ayame is one of the five Mythril Musketeers. I'm slowly building a stack of helpful acquaintances, its kinda nice.

We all head our separate ways. I hop on a boat that heads down an underground river to the mines back in Bastok.

Getting off the boat there's a Galka waiting at the dock. Big and dark looking. This is Zeid.

"Never seen a dark knight before?" he mutters.

I tell him about Gumbah and his story.

"It's unfortunate what happened to Werei, but I see Volker has not changed."

Even you can not begin to comprehend the darkness inside my soul Zeid. Try me.

"Take this sword and let it feed on your bloodlust."

"I must go. I have some business to attend to in Beadaeux, the Quadav stronghold. Sate that sword's hunger, and we will meet again..."

He leaves. I leave.

The sword is abnormally heavy. I can only swing the drat thing every seven seconds and it barely cuts. I'll have to work on this later I have a report to file.

I head back to the Ironworks and report. The staff of the embassy complain about being in Bastok while I give a detailed report to the secretary. The ambassador reminds them that Bastok is the rival power of the continent even if it is crude, complacency will only lead to our downfall. The staff counters that saying stuff like that is what got the ambassador's noble rear end sent here in the first place.

And that concludes my Bastok assignment. Time to report back to Halver with everything.

Holy poo poo he is actually taking me sorta seriously. Holy poo poo he actually paid me!

With this I'm officially recognized everywhere as an adventurer, whatever that may mean. I also am welcome to loiter around inside the chateau. I feel hopeful. For the first time I have genuine hope that maybe asses will move.

I do need to meet up with Lion at the crag but I have a bit of time before that.

So how's the whole class thing work? Are you stuck with your starting class but able to switch secondaries or something like that?

You can change main and sub jobs at your mog house whenever you like. The job's level stays like Final Fantasy 14 so when you switch back you will still be whatever level you were before the switch. Each job starts at level 1, all of them. The sub job is just half of what the main job is, so a 99 Thief with a sub job will have that sub job's max level be 49*. You get everything from that sub job's current level except the 1 hour cooldown. For pet classes you can only ever have 1 pet.

So as an example you can sub job Red Mage for some utility spells or Ninja to dual wield on a job that can't normally.

*we can break this number deep in the endgame to an extent

Unless you need invis/reraise for a quest, then do this in that scenario(or use items). Most of the time you see Visaria's full screen she'll have Red as a sub for dungeon travel purposes. In real fights oh boy oh boy does sub job matter.

When we hit proper job updates I'll go into the abilities you get being a sub job.

Things you want from a sub job: Active abilities(high jump), Unique spells locked to White or Black Mage on a non White/Black caster(reraise), passive skills(dual wield)

Things that suck for sub jobs: Weapons(you'll get skill capped), pets(they scale off the sub job), most spells on non casters(your magic skill won't be high enough and the spells are capped at level 49 so no learning protect 4 and 5 as example)

Please keep asking questions, we FF11 sickos love diving into this crap. Can you make a dps White Mage? Yeah. Should you? Maybe!

Also you only get experience on your main job. So you'll need to actually main job White Mage for a bit in the example above.

With the proper XP rings it takes about 4 hours for level 50, less by having the Rhapsodies passive experience boosts along with certain trusts. My to next level at 50 is 7800 experience. At 60 it is 18800 as a sense of scale.

XP rings come in a few flavors, you can only have one of each.

You have rings that you can recharge once a week with 3 charges that boost XP by 50% for 30000 bonus xp per charge

You have rings with unlimited uses that boost XP by 150% for 30000 bonus XP. These are only given out a few times per year for free but they have a 2 hour cooldown.

The last one is a 3 charge(can't be recharged) 150% boost for 30000 bonus XP with a small cooldown. You can buy these for logging in for 10 days or through login bonus events. If you have more than one character on your account they earn daily rewards too so if the bonus xp is worth a lot to you that extra $1 for another character can be tempting. There are other benefits of extra characters as well. I'll probably do a side write up at some point of the ins and outs of it all.

There are other types of experience that exist and there are separate rings for that but we won't reach that for a while. Leveling itself and the mystery of crab will be it's own update.

This is Visaria after 30 days with me knowing what I'm doing:

Level 60 is needed to wear the last piece of AF so unless people ask for certain jobs to be featured I'm not taking things past that, with the exception of later classes because those need 75 for their full story. As a reminder you can ask in BOLD for one or more jobs to be in the spotlight. I've been slowing my roll on doing story hoping for some requests which is hard for people because we haven't really seen the story for most jobs yet(next update we will) and you kinda need the setup to decide what looks neat. Sadly we don't get any setup for the original 6 but they all do have a story.

Chapter 6: Dark And Light

The fall of the Kingdom of San d'Oria ushered in an era of prosperity for the republic of Bastok.

Hume tradesmen spread across Vana'diel in an unprecedented era of economic development.
Bastok's fortunes grew as Humes sold products forged from the precious metals and rare ores extracted from their mines.
The trend only accelerated with the appearance of the engineering genius named Cid.

Ever practical, the Humes set about creating another nation-state: the Grand Duchy of Jeuno. Jeuno had long been a tiny fishing town on an isolated island between the two continents.
The construction of great bridges transformed the sleepy village into a teeming metropolis of trade and industry.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

With everyone reeling from the Shadow Lord report, I have some time off. There's no better way to spend my day off than channeling my dark emotions into a blade!

*100 dead rabbits later*

I feel nothing and there is no discernable difference in the sword. Zeid said he was going to Beadaeux, I'll head there and find him to see what's up with the sword.

I reflect on it as I'm walking through the swamp and I come up with a conclusion to what I just did.

If you kill 100 living things and feel happy about it, what does that say about you?
If you kill 100 living things and feel bad but do it anyway, what does that say about you?
If you kill 100 living things and feel nothing, what does that say?

I really have no answer, why the hell did I just take 100 souls? The lure of power?

Hey Zeid... What the hell am I trying to internalize?

Think of it like this; bearing the weight and managing to use the sword is like the weight of the souls you took with it. It never gets lighter and it's always going to be a struggle to do anything. Sometimes it's pointless and you deal with that. At the end you are still standing.

"It's up to you to choose whether or not you will walk down the bloody path of the dark knight. But it might be wise to confront your past, first, before you make your decision..."

And then he's gone with nothing but a paper left for me.

I have plenty of time to reflect upon my past while bloodying the blade further. My past is poo poo. My present is less poo poo. My future? Well I'm dead in it.

*another 100 dead rabbits later*

What the hell am I doing this for?

I take the blade to the Gusgen mines and do as the letter says.

I have become death itself. I choose what lives and dies. Including myself.

Well I feel heavier now... I need to offload all these rabbit hides and the best place to do so is with some hunters in Windurst. Needless to say the some of the Mithra seem staggered by what I've done. One in particular, Perih Vashai, asks me if Mother Nature is good with me.

Sauromugue Champaign

I've lived in the wild most of my life but do I respect nature? Not really. To be approved by the earth and sky, to hunt with nature is to be a ranger. She says that if I wish to submit myself to nature's laws I must meet with the fanged king of beasts and bring back one of it's great teeth. Listen to the voice of nature and wait for it to run her course. Then even those without fangs will be permitted to hunt as one of her rangers.

Feeling slightly guilty over the mass of dead rabbits I'll try to give nature a little bit of respect. I head to the mountains, into a cave littered with old bones. Upon inspecting them I hear a growl and duck into the shadows.

It's an old mountain lion looking to be on it's last legs. This is a graveyard. I wait and I wait. I wait. I wait. Finally after what seemed like forever the lion draws its last breath. Dead. I take one of it's fangs and head back.

"For the hunter, the fangs are not just a tool vital for existence, but a witness to it's death. If the fanged one loses its fangs it can no longer live. Yet when it dies only its fangs remain. To be a ranger you must live by the fang and die leaving only the fang behind."

I get it, I think... I'm still death regardless, but I get it. Man this was suppose to be my work break but now I feel more exhausted than ever.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

As I head back into San d'Oria the gate guard mentions that Prince Trion was looking for me. Trion is not my most hated noble so I head to his room to meet with him immediately. The man gets things done and has money with which he can pay me to do the things that need getting done.

He sent some scouts to the Orcish stronghold of Davoi and needs me to pick the reports up. Once he has the all the numbers that come from scouting he plans to finally strike. He also seems to believe my report about the Shadow Lord. On that news alone I'm more than willing to go find the scouts and get their reports.

Off to Davoi I go!

Oh these two again...

I only hear bits of their conversation. Something about Orcs and a someone looking for or taking a sword. The one in blue armor mentioned something about asking his sister, she learned all there was to know of the sword from their father. She may have left something behind for him to find I think? They move on and I go about my business.

The scout isn't hard to find and I get the report.

Wait I think I remember something about an island. "From the island lake, south runs the flow."

I hop in the river and head south, there are high level orcs along the cliffs that will absolutely murder you if they spot you. Up into a small ridge I find an old well.

It's fairly rotten but in it I find a sword that has had its blade melted away. I'll bring it back with me. I'm done in Davoi for now. The other two scouts are deeper in and holding out for back up.

I return to Trion and he is stunned by the report. The Royal Knights alone would not be enough, he'd need the Temple Knights as well. If I've learned anything that isn't happening. I'm sure the scouts will be fine.

Either way he goes off to discus it with Curilla and Pieuje. My job is done. Or so I thought. As I went to leave Halver said I got promoted. I'm to go work for the San d'Orian embassy in Jeuno. The King himself is to give me my letter of introduction.

Oh... I just realized the prince didn't pay me as he was too distracted to do so. Well I'm here and I can't really say no to the king. Surely a king pays. Right?

King Destin welcomes me and mentions he's heard of me from the princess of all people. I must have made a good first impression if she has been watching me wade through this muck ever since.

The king reprises what Halver told me. Apparently they recently lost one of the staff at the embassy, I will be working directly under the king's appointment. The embassy is expecting me and I'm to head out as soon as I am able.

Well before I leave I have one order of business left. The melted sword.

I deliver it and become a true knight. A paladin. A light shining in the deepest pit of hell.

I've learned to harness dark, light, and nature's balance in this short time but physically I've reached my peak. As I am now I just can't become any stronger... I see more mountains in the distance but I can't reach them.

I head for Jeuno, center of Vana'diel. Maybe I'll find an airship to my next mountain there.

Chapter 7: Jeuno

The one known only as the Shadow Lord appeared without warning, and his name remains synonymous with terror to this day.
Consumed by hatred of all living things, he enlisted the beastmen and employed them in simultaneous attacks against the nations of Vana'diel. So began the Crystal War.

After years of peace and prosperity, the nations fell one after another, unable to halt the relentless onslaught.
The nightmare spread across the lands of Vana'diel like hellfire.

In response to the seemingly unstoppable beastmen assault, Grand Duke Kam'lanaut of Jeuno convinced the people of San d'Oria, Windurst, and Bastok to unite as the Allied Forces of Altana - and defeat the beastmen once and for all.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Grand Duchy of Jeuno

Jeuno... Where to start? Well people come from far and wide to set up shop here. If you are looking for something there is a good chance you'll find it here even if you might have to go through certain less reputable sources. The city also happens to be a modern marvel of engineering. Think of it as a big upward spiral with each great bridge connecting the continents being a platform on the spiral. At the top lies Ru'Lude Gardens where the palace and embassies are.

But why would I go directly to work? First order of business is getting a chocobo license! I head to the stables in Upper Jeuno and find the manager Brutus. Unfortunately they don't just hand out licenses to any bright eyed adventurer, you gotta prove you aren't gonna get yourself or your mount harmed. He points out a bird in the corner with a kid next to it. The bird is in rough shape physically, even worse mentally. Last owner was a real piece of poo poo apparently. My job is get the bird to trust me by feeding it grass. Problem is the poor thing is wary of people and doesn't want to eat. The kid encourages me to keep trying every now and then.

Well I'll try again in a bit then. I'll hit up a tavern while I wait.

I park myself at a table with a guy lost in his cups. Seems like his girl has gone and left him. Though luck. As I get a drink from the bar one of the bartenders mentions a song craved in stone in Bururimu. It's about torn apart lovers, simple words but they hit you in the heart. Time might march on but people are always gonna deal with hardships, she thinks the old bitter lyrics might do the guy drinking himself to death at the table some good...

Its no trouble for me to just poof over to Mhaura and grab a rubbing of the stone, so I do just that between bird feedings. Never say ol' Visaria doesn't believe in love.

"It's a rare day I see anybody around here."

He introduces himself as a simple minstrel who makes his living hopping from tavern to tavern. He likes to visit this place when he passes by, the lyrics on the stone have a sort of endless charm to them. Two torn lovers hearing the same crashing of waves on distant shores... As a minstrel he takes these broken dreams and makes them live on, passing them to others. Even those who have forgotten how to sing from the toils of life should be moved by the emotion of the lyrics on this stone.

He apologizes for rambling and hopes to meet me again in a warm tavern in our futures. It was nice. To have someone be passionate about something they love in a world that is full of misery and to just share it.

I take the lyrics back to the man at the bar, still dying on the inside. He seems to think its some kind of sick joke though.

My minstrel friend assures him it is not. The two bounce back and forth about the merit of old songs. Lewenhart parts with us asking the man to simply give the song a try and hopes they meet again after he has learned to appreciate it. The drunk swears he's seen the minstrel somewhere before but can't place it.

The Bartender says there is an opposite set of lyrics on the beach in Valkurm. Wonderful spot for a date. Reading one set and then the other brings tears to your eyes.

Between bird feeding attempts I poof over to Selbina. Like last time the stone sits there on the beach and like last time I'm joined by another.

He wanted to know more about the story he heard in the tavern so he went searching and he has a feeling he knows who the old fellow was. And right on cue...

Like Mertaire, Lewenhart too has had days where his voice was shrill without emotion. He often asks the stars above for what purpose he sings and ever do they remain silent to him. Should he ever have melancholy he reads this stone and tries to sing of their feelings as they did.

Just be honest with yourself and know your feelings. Use the two tones to bring forth harmony. One day Lewenhart hopes to meet us again and hear our songs we make for ourselves.

Well with that spoony side adventure out of the way lets get back to bird therapy.

I finally get it to eat some grass. The stable keepers thought it would take longer honestly. But then to ruin it all a loud voice approaches "Right when I thought I'd lost you, I find your sorry face here."

Hoooo boy.

I pat the chocobo. Yeah buddy I see the problem. Have some more greens.

We all agree he is the worst.

I give the chocobo a little more care and fully gain it's trust. With that Brutus gives me my chocobo license which lets me ride chocobos and other mounts. The faster movement is nice but the real benefit to riding is monsters won't try and attack you while you ride. Too much effort to hit? Too big? Who cares! It lets me travel almost anywhere outside now.

Before leaving Brutus mentions with the way I really bonded with that chocobo so fast I could become a Beastmaster. It's not something he could teach me but practice makes perfect. Osker quips that the chocobo's last master certainly didn't have the gift I have. I do have to wonder though what was up with him.

Alright I should actually do my job. I head up to Ru'Lude Gardens and to my embassy.

Seems the Ambassador is out investigating at Delkfutt's Tower down on Qufim Island.

"Good day."

Wolfgang here is also looking to meet with the ambassador only to be told about her travels to the tower. Wolfgang says the ambassador should avoid such dangerous places... or was it by order of San d'Oria?

Another guest looking for the ambassador.

Wolfgang is the Captain of the Ducal Guard as his father was before him, hand picked by the Archduke. Monberaux is a doctor here in Jeuno, possibly one of the best in the world so I've heard.

Wolfgang asks that we advise the ambassador against careless adventures and will return later. He tells his friend to take care lest he comes to regret it. Monberaux can't give a checkup without a patient so he will also return later as well.

I have to go get her don't I? Yes, yes I do. I can reach Qufim from the port. You can't miss the tower.

But before I leave I have some things to do.

The chocobo lets out a sad kweh. I think it's chocobo for help him.

"The doc said an herb from Qufim should bring the fever down, but I have to stay here and watch over him."

I'm going there anyway. It's for the kid. I'm looking for an herb that blooms around midnight to dawn.

I have time before it blooms. I heard of a man in Ru'Lude. A man who can unlock someone's potential. His name.

Maat.

"Hey kid wanna break some limits?"

Boy howdy do I! The first couple limit breaks he just asks for some fairly easy to get items. The third limit break he asks for 3 crests from the deepest part of the beastmen strongholds. This is a nightmare of a quest.

For Davoi you have to find Trion's other scouts after going all the way through Davoi to get an orb. Then you curse the orb at four ponds spread around Davoi, the last one curses you which slows movement and reduces max hp/mp roughly 70-80%. You can cure it by having 29 levels of White Mage on either Main or Sub. Don't have White Mage leveled and equipped? 10 minutes of curse. Going back through all of Davoi to the scout will get you an uncursed orb to break through a barrier to get the crest.

The Beadeaux crest requires you to go through all of Beadeaux which has curse totems that curse you for 3 minutes UNLESS you silence yourself on other totems. There are a lot of doors guarded by enemies in the way which can't be opened while invisible. At the end there is a Notorious Monster that has true hearing which means invisibility spells won't work on it. It can be snuck past easily, but if you don't know about it beforehand and are looking for the crest you get to die to something 13 levels higher than you and get to do the whole trip again.

Last we have the Castle Oztroja crest which you have to go through a door with two switches, one switch drops you down a pit that changes daily. A door with 4 leavers to open it that changes daily which you can brute force. And lastly a door with a 3 word passcode that changes every fricken Vana'diel day. There are 17 different 4 letter words you CAN brute force this but you should practice selfcare and touch at least one of the password hints on the way up to the door which is at the very very end of the entire castle. After entering the passcodes you drop down a one way hole and have to avoid some mean mobs to pick up the last crest.

These also require key items from the mission after we go to find the ambassador.

After this our level cap is 65, still a long way to go til we hit the limit of the limit breaks.

Off to Qufim then!

We found them but the roots we need are burred in rock. There are heavy footsteps from behind us. Monsters?

Oh its just you.

It's digging. I don't really need to say anything. Dietmund knows he was a piece of poo poo, apologizes, and thanks the bird.

After getting the lower tower zoop I head back to Dietmunds house, he isn't home but his son is better it seems.

His dad left a Beastmaster's whistle for me. After handing to me the kid runs off to play.

This is the correct way to do it even with controller and once we hit deep endgame it is intended by the developers.

Keyboard and mouse is a lot better in current times(this could be the game's catchphrase):

You have an addon that allows for clicking on party member's hp/mp bar to select them then it pops up a list of spells to cast on them. (Even with a controller I use this one for emergency heals)

You have an addon that gives you hotkeys and a hotbar like in most modern mmos.

You have an addon to click on one of four sections that depending on where you click brings up different sorted menus for items, spells, weaponskills, or abilities.

The camera is the awful part of keyboard and mouse for me. But for people where a mouse is easier than two hands on a controller the option is there and with some work is a fine way to play. Even without the addons you could probably program a mmo mouse to work as a substitute for the keyboard part.

Chapter 8: Of Gobbies And Men

A stalemate ensued for some time.

Finally, at the legendary Battle of Jeuno, the Allied Forces of Altana were able to gain the upper hand. They claimed total victory over the beastmen at the merciless Battle of Xarcabard.

Finally, the heroes of the five races cornered the Shadow Lord in his stronghold of Castle Zvahl, where Volker, champion of Bastok, delivered the final coup de grace.

Thus the Crystal War drew to an end, with victory marred by the uncountable corpses scattered throughout the devastated lands and cities of Vana'diel.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This here is Delkfutt's Tower. Twelve floors and a basement. To get to that basement you must go to floor ten and kill a giant for a key. It takes a while to say the least even with invisibility. There is a teleport crystal up at the top. In my rush I never grab it.

This will never come up again.

Why do we need to get to that basement?

Our missing ambassador got knocked out and brought down there.

We agree this is no place to talk after I explain who I am and head back to the embassy.

After some repeated thanks for the tower trip she formally assigns me to the post of attaché of the Embassy to Jeuno. Also I got paid 5000 Gil.

NOW TIME TO WORK!

The embassy has received a request from the Archduke of Jeuno to send someone for a special mission. Guess who proved herself to be qualified for special things?

I am to be on my best behavior as a whole lot of diplomatic relations are now riding on my shoulders.

The ambassador gave me an audience permit that lets me get in to see the Archduke. With haste I head in to the chamber to meet with quite possibly the most important person in the world.

Before Kam'lanaut can finish a young lad pops out from behind a pillar.

Eald'narche here is giving me completely not on the level vibes. Something about the eyepatch maybe.

Kam'lanaut, as flat as possible, says he is his brother don't let him bother me... But hey have you heard about the Shadow Lord?

Eald'narche says his sources tell him the beastmen in Davoi, Beadeaux, and Castle Oztroja are conspiring to return him.

You are setting off all my buzzers kid.

Kam'lanaut says they plan on doing so by harnessing the power of mysterious stones called magicite. I am to go there and sieze their magicite.

As I leave I feel cold. There is absolutely something wrong with those two but this does concern the Shadow Lord so I have no reason not to go kicking down beastmen doors.

To access the Tenshodo headquarters I need to be a member. All I need to do is buy an invite off the street and show it to the receptionist. I can resell it afterwards.

And with that I now have access to a group of smuglers not to be confused with my pirate associates.

Aldo is the leader of the Tenshodo, we've met him before in Norg. He gives me the run down on where to find the magicite and a key to access the one in Beadeaux.

"Aldo..." a woman's voice comes from the doorway.

She has heard that the Archduke has ordered all beastmen out of the city. The beastmen in the city are goblin traders and craftsmen, harmless. Would the average person care about the difference? Perhaps the Archduke is just acting before trouble does start. No matter the situation Aldo doesn't plan on helping chase them out.

Verena also shares my bad vibes of the court. It's impossible to try and read them.

She is far too kind for this world. I finish up with Aldo and outside his chambers I get two more keys. I'll need a torch from the Goblins and another key from a kid in upper Jeuno as well.

I'll start with the kid who wants some fresh meat. Easy enough.

Holy poo poo kid.

Apparently she was perfectly normal before. Had a fiancé name Albrecht. One day after she came back from a picnic with a girl named Alista, she got a headache and stayed in bed, then got like that... The kid hands me the crest, he thought it might uncurse her but no luck. Albrecht apparently has been praying at the temple for her. No promises kid but I'll look into it eventually.

Man I have to walk that off. Oh hey some kids trying to grow some flowers and hey is that Aldo's sister as well?

Well that warms my shriveled heart a bit. I have to head to Muckvix's junk shop next so I'll probably see Fickbilx there.

At the shop it turns out like Muck is all outta the "special" torches but Fickblix has my back with one. Thanks lil buddy.

He says the beasties outside of town are getting all worked up and he wants to go out and try and talk with them. He says there's no reason we can't be friends like he is with Verena and dashes off.

Verena and Fickblix are both too kind for this world...

Oh speaking of! While I was finishing up at the junkshop upgrading my bag to carry more junk, Verena popped in looking for Fickblix. Just missed him. It seems like something is wrong?

Better keep an eye out for him when I get to the castle portion of my magicite hunt.

Chapter 9: Magicite

Although the war had ended, the long-suffering nations of Vana'diel pledged to maintain their alliance. Each nation built a consulate in their sister countries.
The Duchy of Jeuno unveiled enormous airships based on ancient technology, bringing the nations of Vana'diel closer together, and promising a new era of peace and prosperity.

Or so the nations of the world had hoped.
In reality, the beastmen had regrouped and continued to construct strongholds throughout the world.
Although they lacked the organization of previous eras, they launched a new campaign of looting, plundering, and terror against the people of Vana'diel.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Lets get to it! First magcite is in Davoi. It's at this time I do Maat's uncap involving the three beastmen strongholds mentioned previously.

The annoying parts of each of these strongholds that I mentioned are mainly unique to the Maat areas, you don't need to go very deep to get to the magicite.

I find what seems to be a spine that has been broken. Inside of it...

Magicite?

I grab th-

-ull a chu-

-nk off... The hell was that?

What the actual hell was that?

That was definitely the past but how and why? I'm not gonna puzzle this out now because it's sure as hell gonna happen at the next one too.

Beadeaux next. Like the previous magicite, it's housed inside a broken spine.

I brace myself for the flashback and pull...

Castle Oztroja last...

And upon walking in the drat door...

Sorrow

Breaking the cycle is hard Verena. As a show of respect I avoid spilling more blood and sneak into the magicite chamber, once again in a broken spine.

And once again...

That was the past... Karaha-Baruha "The Hero of Windurst" died summoning Fenrir 20 years ago in a battle of 30000 Beastmen vs 1000 Windurstians including cardians.

That was the present with current Orastery minister Ajido-Marujido, who was the one who taught me to hear Carbuncle. The last vision seemed to be the Star Sybil in recent days as well.

I can't tell if that was more or less ominous than the last two since it involved the present or nearish past...

Oh hey Lion, don't touch the shinny rocks.

Despair (Memoro de la S^tono)

Yeah Lion you are right I DO look like poo poo. What the hell are the beastmen doing with this stuff?

Yep, seems like it. At least it wasn't an out of body experience this time. We should probably report this.

One step ahead of us. Kam'lanaut tells me to return to my embassy. He'll have need of my aid again soon.

But of course I can't just go peacefully...

...

Dread washes over me.

FF11 has some amazingly good stories; it's just that for most of it's existence it was locked behind horrible old school MMO grind.

As expansions go on the story gets much better and the access to the story is pretty easy nowadays once you get to max level which is no longer a huge process. That being said the roughest parts of doing FF11's story is that the game needs a wiki at times(there are two of them, neither is complete, use both for different quests...) because it was designed around people talking to each other and helping each other do quests together. A friend of mine's MOM had a binder of notes from when she played. If you like exploration puzzles, poo poo this is a game for you.

To be honest, playing Elden Ring after trying to play Morrowind again has made me realize that while actually having to travel by using landmarks and viewing beautiful vistas and interpreting direction which might or might not be subtly wrong is wonderful, after enough times close enough together, it winds up being a commute. Sure, make me travel and see things, but after a while I'm taking public transit, putting on headphones and reading a book. (Although I will visit places and routes again for the view when they are shockingly pretty.)

I would not try to LP this without my zoops. Even with zoops I had a quest take me 5 hours knowing where I was going, having invis, and being 99. It was mostly travel. Doing it blind and capped at level 75 was probably both amazing and horrible way back when.

11 tends to make you visit every inch of the world. I swear I've been to Ordelle's Cave like 4 times so far for different things not including the one time I leveled there a bit. Some out in the middle of nowhere cave. Over the expansions maps start to evolve and I'll get to it when it happens. Base game maps are mainly normal straight forward maps, not a ton of puzzles/switches/gimmicks if any at all. Later on both dungeons and overworld get a little crazy. I absolutely understand how FF14 1.0 happened.

When we get to interesting maps I will absolutely show them off. Also I still need to take pictures of Jeuno, I swear I will eventually.

Also a bit of a status update. Zillart is done, need to write it all. The only Jobs not at 60 are Warrior(52) and Beastmaster(51). What this translates to is I'm gonna do some Job updates before we start expansion 2. If anyone wants to see more of certain NPCs or Jobs, sound off and I'll prioritize the associated Job/NPC quests. Crab kill count for expansion 1 is going places.

Chapter 10: Shattering Stars

Still, the three great nations continued to mistrust one another.
Rather than dispatching their own forces to deal with the beastmen threat, they began to employ a new generation of independent youth to deal with the situation on an individual level.

These stalwart people are called adventurers.
They are intrepid souls who follow their own beliefs, moving freely from city to city in spite of their own national allegiances.
Truly, it is the dawn of a new era in Vana'diel history.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Needless to say the embassy sends me home immediately to figure out the situation.

Curilla meets me at the Chateau.

As a former brigand I can't help but wince at that...

Looks like the king is looking for Curilla while we stand here in awkward silence.

While it seems like everything was under control the king informs her something was overlooked...

At this point a normal person would quit, take their bed if they had one, and find a hole to live in for the next decade. We knew the Shadow Lord was possibly comming back and somehow two orders of knights couldn't protect the magic dodongle that keeps him gone. 20 years ago was really really bad. Like very bad. What was I doing 20 years ago? I can't remember, but it was bad. Wait how old am I? Was I alive 20 years ago? That isn't important right this second. Balls have been dropped.

While I have my inner meltdown the conversation continues.

Training? Better go hit up Maat for all he's worth.

Ru'Lude Gardens

At first he just has me go around talking to people all over the Middle Lands. No big deal each gives me a rock. After that however he finally gets serious.

Half his tasks are merely fetching random things, yes, but they do make me stronger undoubtedly. A testimony can be found on various high level monsters. Each monster, like people themselves can have one or more jobs like Black Mage or Dark Knight. I specifically need to hunt skeletons that have Dark Knight as a job in the caves on the Valkrum Dunes.

"Games? You should talk, Wolfgang. Why, Visaria here could slice you up and eat you for breakfast."

Yeah I probably could... Wait did I get a complement and/or affirmation? Maat that is the way to my heart. Also Gil but you look broke. He'll finish his business with Wolfgang while I grab the testimony.

Visaria gets the testimony

Not too hard, they have a reasonable drop rate. Without trusts or a party it would be impossible. I really should leave a positive review of the program at the Jeuno Institute of Magic Studies.

How hard could he be?

Maat is always level 70 and is always your class, he will always use hand to hand. He has most of the abilities of your job >INCLUDING YOUR ONE HOUR<. Once upon a time you had to solo him. Nowadays you can use trusts but he is still very rough if you aren't ready to be hit with a one hour ability.

Student defeats master and we head back to Jeuno. I can't help but wonder what this old man's deal is. Why is he as strong as he is?

He shares a story with me.

Doctor Monberaux had been listening in and has a question for Maat.

The Doctor tells Maat to keep safe and starts to head off.

"They say that where there is a beginning, there is an end. However I believe something like memories, don't have to end. That is where you young folk come in..."

And that is all this simple old man can ask for.

The Archduke and his brother aren't normal, that was certain the first time I met them. I have no idea what each of their goals are but they feel ominous. But I have a different problem to deal with.

I go back to Halver to see what they came up with.

I doubt anyone would believe me about the flashbacks but I think some of that expedition is what I saw during my magicite adventure.

My fight with Maat actually took place in the ruins so I have a quick zoop to them. We just need to slap a fresh seal on a hell gate. Normal adventurer stuff. Before I leave I stop by and get Curilla's trust.

I can honestly say there is no one in this Kingdom who takes the knight stuff more seriously that her, even Trion. It actually makes me feel a little guilty for setting my standards for a knight to be so high that this is what I expect them all to be like. Ever striving for perfection for others sake, it actually feels a little like a curse.

Well... Off to Fei'Yin I go.

Oh look my friends are here, now we can gaze at the demon seal together.

Would you believe me if I said I saw it?

While they do that I have a seal to fix.

Boss Time!

A lich? Better kill it.

Okay so I got cocky and decided to rush down the lich while ignoring the two other skeletons. Problem is they are all casters and casters hit hard. Also as the lich gets closer to death he summons more...

I start fixing my mistake. Eventually I take them all down.

Good work team. Time to fix a seal.

My Dark Knight teacher gives me poo poo over that poor showing.

This is a bit of a problem. I can't fix something that doesn't exist to be fixed.

The heads of the knights are already mid conversation when I arrive.

This is going to end up with me being sent to assassinate the Shadow Lord, I feel it in my bones.

Yep I know how this story ends already, better prepare myself with some new armor. Also I still have to meet up with Lion at the crag and I have time while whatever this is *juggles hands at the knights* happens.

Monsters having classes also reminds me of Guild Wars 1. Do they have access to the full array of abilities that a player of equal level would have?

MarquiseMindfang posted:

Generally, no. Grunt or fodder mobs will usually only have the spell lists of the classes they ostensibly have -- except in the case of Summoner, where normal monsters cannot use the Avatars and can only summon one element of Spirit to assist them. Notorious Monsters can have some or all of the actual Job Abilities of the class, depending on which one it is. Some of these are nigh-useless to a monster (Manafont, for example, when monsters have huge MP reserves) and so in these cases the ability usually unlocks something else. Manafont might add new spells to the monster's spell list for the duration, or something like that. Mijin Gakure, the Ninja's selfdestruct ability, usually has its drawback of instantly KOing yourself removed in a monster's hands.

There is also a (sadly abandoned) system in the game whereby players get to play as monsters and romp around the world killing other monsters. In these situations you DO have full access to the Job Abilities of whatever you're piloting, iirc. They forgot to give this system any useful rewards and so it died in the cradle.

Half the monsters have Blue magic, sometimes multiple Blue spells. They can also have most normal rear end magic including the very angry Black Mage spells. NMs can have one hours sometimes. Some specific summoned NMs can SPAM one hours. Dragoon, Beastmaster, and Puppeteer enemies all have their pets. Lots of boss fights have one hours. All monsters have TP moves and use the TP moves at different intervals depending on their current HP; less HP = faster usage. A boss with a ton of HP gets very hairy at low HP. Monster TP moves are a topic we will go over in detail when we hit Blue Mage.

Like MM was saying before, Maat with certain one hours like Red Mage which lets you just spam spells can be your doom. Even with trusts that one hour can end you. In White Mage's case you just had to live for 5 minutes while fighting him. You only need to do the Maat fight once on any Job but you can fight him again on the others for his trust.

Welcome to the first Job rundown. In these I'll go over how the Job works and other fun stuff to start then we'll do the artifact armor quests of the Job and in later expansions there is a level 75 uncap quest for new Jobs instead of Maat. Some of these will probably be in multiple parts, these early expansion ones aren't too deep so only one for them.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dark Knight

Role: Damage dealer and a bit of an off tank

Dark Knight is a solid damage dealer. Doesn't do anything fancy other than doing big numbers.

Main Weapons: Great Sword and Scythe

Both are solid choices with Scythe being slightly better and for the most part being unique to Dark Knight at high levels of gear. In general for armor, Dark Knight can usually wear plate that Paladin and Warrior can. It also has heavy armor choices that are less tank focused and more damage focused.

Magic: A little bit of Elemental magic and unique Dark magic

The Elemental magic is nothing useful, but the Dark stuff is pretty neat. You can absorb various stats from enemies like strength, you can absorb MP, you can absorb HP, you can absorb TP, you can steal buffs, and like a Red Mage you can enchant your weapon but uniquely with Dark element. All this being said you aren't really a caster and as such your cool Dark magic is rarely used.

Notable Abilities:

Blood Weapon: (One hour cooldown) You absorb health from your attacks for 30 seconds.
Soul Enslavement: (One hour cooldown) You absorb TP from your attacks for 30 seconds.
*Last Resort: Raise attack and lower defense, later on a merit adds attack speed to it as do some traits.
*Souleater: Sacrifice health on each hit to deal extra damage. The iconic Dark Knight gimmick!
*Consume Mana: Use ALL your MP to deal extra damage on your next attack. You have ways to get back MP very easily and you don't use your MP for much anyhow.
*Weapon Bash: A quick low damage hit that stuns.
Scarlet Delirium: The next hit you take gives you a damage buff, the cooldown is low enough that this can always be up. If you take 50% of your HP you get a 25% damage buff as an example.
Nether Void: Your next drain(not TP) drains 50% more

*Can be used on other Jobs when set as a Sub Job

Notable Traits As A Sub Job:

Physical attack boosts, two hand attack speed with Last Resort on, two hand damage boosts, bonus TP from casting Elemental or Dark magic.

Pretty good for any Job that uses two handers.

Cool Weapon Skills:

Infernal Scythe: Deals darkness elemental damage and lowers target's attack.
Entropy: Converts damage dealt into MP
Catastrophe: Drains Health
Insurgency: Hits like a truck
Cross Reaper: Hits like a slightly smaller truck but you get it early

Everything you need, scythe skills are just kinda good.

Summary:

In general you enchant yourself with darkness as it makes sense and just go to town bleeding yourself to death and being surprisingly fast for swinging a two hander around. When needed you can off tank and self heal a little bit with your spells, weaponskills, and Sub Job choice.

Metalworks

I need some new armor if I'm going to go run in and fight the Shadow Lord all by myself(and my trusts). The best place to go looking is the Metalworks in Bastok.

Darksteel? Sounds dark and strong. Perfect.

Frick, gotta go to Windurst and get it back.

Frick, gotta go beat up some birds.

One bird beating later

I give Cid a bit to think on it.

Okay so to sum it up Gerwitz makes the good darksteel which is what Dark Knight armor is traditionally made from. Zeid is looking into some kind of "evil weapon" which is basically a weapon with a will of its own. They enslave earth spirits named kobolds who have telekinetic powers. The weapons get like that usually from exposure to powerful magic.

Also did Cid say something about Zeid being the one who ended the Shadow Lord and not Volkner? No wonder Volkner thinks Zeid deserves his position. Also no wonder Zeid doesn't want to believe the current situation...

Well if it gets me closer to the mystery of Gerwitz and some armor, Zeid hunting I will go!

After I whole lot of searching I find him in Ordelle's Cave.

In other words I'm bait. I take a darksteel ingot and go to the reported spot.

We just drop this bar here annnnnd...

That was an axe but its darksteel. So maybe we drop the axe oveeer heeere?

That's the sword, lets just drop this ovvvver theeere...

I successfully beat up a soul! Everyone knows that is how you fix em.

Zeid is skeptical that's all there was to Gerwitz sticking around.

Wait what am I doing? I just wanted some armor.

This whole thing has driven home what it is to be a Galka. Treated as lesser with fewer rights, borderline slavery, Hume given names, driven from their homeland by beastmen, the inherent rage that burns inside of them that is a struggle to control. Being a Galka means something, it means you still exist despite everything before. Reincarnation is a fine reproduction cycle, but yes, I'm sure it is scary when staring at the the end of your life knowing you'll forget everything. It would be for anyone, rebirth or no. The true burden lies with the Talekeeper. Not only do they remember their past life, they remember two centuries of every Galka's lives. Love, hate, fear, joy, sadness, death, and pain. 200 years of it. I couldn't do it. No one can do it. Never once has a Talekeeper lived to their rebirth. That is the real dark burden. As far as I know, Zeid mentioning it just now is the first I've ever heard of a new Talekeeper being found since Raogrimm. It's probably not something I should talk about if that is the case.

Well now I feel awful. I did get boots out of this though. Before leaving Gerwitz tells me about a flanchard and cuirass hidden away in Davoi and Castle Oztroja. He also tells me of a armorsmith in Jeuno who might be able to get me some gloves.

The two beastmen pieces are just locked away in coffers in high level parts of their lairs. A little invisibility gets me to them.

Now the gloves... I start at the obvious spot, the armor shop.

So Dragoon, Samurai, Ninja, and every one of the base jobs does this same quest for the gloves. Same with the two pieces in the beastmen strongholds.

I get the gloves from the necropolis by dropping down a pit into some very angry ghosts who give me a savage beating. Like the beastmen armor you just need to open a coffer.

The fellow I talked to at the armor shop lacks the skill and proper tools to repair them however he heard a member of the Tenshodo found an old rusted toolbox that won't open. How convenient!

Yep she swiped it from a warehouse, she sells it to me for 1000 gil. She left it over by the item shop in the port. Turns out she forgot about it til I brought it up.

Wonderful lets get this toolbox and find someone to...

Ghost smith huh? It's strange this is my second one today. He asks for a shadow flame from Castle Zvhal to fix the gauntlets. I don't need to go inside for the flames, the torch I need is outside of it.

I return to the ghost and he restores the gloves. Then just walks through me...

You know what I'm excited for? More ghosts. Where my dark journey began... Well I didn't become a Dark Knight until I returned to Zeid in Beadeaux the first time I murdered 100 rabbits and it is easier to get to compared to the mines.

Zeid is waiting for me there.

Can a blade of darkness truly defeat evil? I'm sure this has been asked as long as Dark Knights have existed. I hunt down a high level quadav mage for some blood while I think about the path I chose for myself.

The place where crystals gather is Delkfutt's Tower, all crag spines connect to it.

It isn't for justice.

It's not love.

Not sorrow, nor guilt.

Is it all really just for death?

At the spot Zeid told me about I summon the scythe with the blood. Once I've banished it I take the teleporter back and find a chest at the bottom of the stairs. A helmet and a letter is inside.

Should I ever doubt the path I've chosen I need but look at my blade and ask myself this:

Does it glow with true darkness?

I choose to believe it burns with hope.

Next Time: Visaria's totally real disciple (I swear) who lives in the far east you wouldn't know her

So Dark Knight... Well it isn't 14's Dark Knight and Zeid says that from the start, yours is not the blade of justice. For most of it Zeid really does just let on it's about making the blade darker, then right at the end there is something more to it and the game never tells you outright what you see when you look at your blade. This Job really ties in with the Galka themes of rage and memory. Something you'll notice in this and every other Job quest, it's usually not about you.

Final thoughts?

No your blade doesn't glow with true darkness, if it did you would be the thing you hunt. Using your own life force to fight, the struggle to live just long enough to see the end of it. Desperation? That might be what leads you to pick up that dark blade but at the end of the path you are just looking for hope. That's what Visaria thinks anyway. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. What exactly is the dark burden? What is darkness?

The next one of these will be Red Mage and then ???.

I have no idea why they decided to include scythes in 11 honestly. Great axes are right there. Dark is extremely based off Cecil and even Zeid uses a great sword.

Warrior and Beastmaster can use a good chunk of important scythe weaponskills.

Black Mage can also use scythes! It can in fact use some of the strongest damage scythes! However they lack the skill to use Entropy(the MP restore WS) and of course their gear is not tailored to melee so small numbers.

11 is neat in that a bunch of the best weapons and armor can be used by more than one Job which is cool for gearing other Jobs you may wish to play. The limit is usually unique weaponskills.

You could say the same about why do guns/crossbows co-exist. Why are archery and marksmanship separate skills? Honestly it's just a flavour thing as far as I can tell. Rule of cool.

They have not gotten around to making archery gooder, guns are still king. It's a shame because it's something unique to Rangers. I think Ranger might have a cool crossbow though when they aren't just using a gun. Also here is a salute to throwing weapons. They exist.

They still do updates to the Jobs so there is always hope they make archery more unique and attractive over marksman's big numbers.

Did guns exist before ToAU? I only have memories of Hexagun days and leveling crafting just to make bullets.

I wonder how much it would break things if they tried to move archery into marksmanship and change the unique Ranger weaponskills.

Chapter 11: The Rhapsodies Of Vana'diel

I told Lion we'd meet at the crag to discuss time and space having a real one and we have some time while we wait on a Shadow Lord plan.

I'll try to explain the crags to the best of my ability. They are big, ancient, made of cermet, and each one has a Mother Crystal. What's a Mother Crystal? Well when you die you go to it I guess. They also have spines that span far beyond the crags themselves. The most noticeable case is in the Meriphataud Mountains where an above ground spine goes across the whole of 'em.

Anyway each crag has a telepoint that takes you inside.

As I walk in Lion is standing there a bit dazed. Apparently the crystal was speaking to her.

She says she saw people fleeing to the four corners of Vana'diel, futilely trying to escape an ever growing cloud of darkness. She was frozen, unable to do anything. A gloom covered a Mother Crystal from view.

"Not everyone is aware that our world, our Vana'diel, is protected by the benevolence of the Mother Crystal. Look all around you."

"This place is no accident. The technologies required to make these structures are beyond any known to us. Those who came before doubtlessly created the facility to shelter the crystal from harm."

Lion's vision does sound like Iroha's future. Speaking of which I bring her up to speed on that situation. We both have questions we'd love to fire off at Iroha but she has a mild case of not existing at the moment so we decide to try and find the spot Lion saw in her dreams. Remembering back to when I first met her she mentioned portals, these are them. She could pretty clearly see Jeuno so if I had to guess it was probably on Qufim.

Yep that ain't normal. Wanna touch it Lion?

"You think it goes to the future?" Lion says as she touches the angry swirling vortex.

*pop*

"Master! You must not get any closer!"

Oh hi Iroha!

So this is a REAL fight, most Rhapsodies of Vana'diel fights are in fact very real.

This son of a gun uses frontal cone attacks that will take out a non tank in 3 or 4 hits and trusts tend to stand wherever you are when you start the fight, usually in a clump. Even with a dedicated healing trust like Kupipi this can be very rough if you don't take the time to try and adjust the trusts by turning off combat and nudging your tank away from the others. I attempted this on a 40ish Paladin and failed, came back 10 levels later and won but it was still rough.

Iroha cheers me on as I kill the beast. Right that was no problem at all kid. Master is awesome and whatnot.

(I am in way over my head)

Where the hell is Lion? Probably beyond the vortex where the monster just came from. Lets go touch the thing and find her.

Found her! And Zeid I guess!?

Hey Lion, I found my disciple. Told ya she was real.

So where the hell are we?

More of a glimpse of what the swallowed world would be like.

Hmm?

A bell? Where is it coming from?

Looks like it's making Lion and Zeid freak out...

The ringing stops and everyone calms down.

It marked the beginning of the end and I called it Escha. But it makes no sense the Emptiness was supposed to appear many years from now... Why is this here?

Zeid puts forth that history might have started being rewritten...

Meanwhile Iroha wonders if she caused it...

Okay putting the two lines of thinking together. Maybe if we save the future we save the past, as hard as it is to wrap our heads around...

The facts we have are this is Escha, we can't get rid of it to our collective knowledge, and that bloody bell is bad news.

Back to the big crystal then.

And Lion has a vision... It seems like she's triggering off the future orb Iroha gave me rather than the crystal. If what portends is true, then there is nothing we can do stop the darkness from approaching. But she wasn't able to see whether or not I was there to stop it.

Iroha suspects it's because the orb isn't fully illuminated yet. We kinda opened the darkness box before we were ready for it.

Zeid is lost about what we are rambling about and asks the simple question of: what can we actually do?

Well for now I can deal with the Shadow Lord. Maybe that will clear up some darkness or make my orb work better-er. Whatever will happen will get me closer to my future. I think. I'm still grasping that I live long enough in this hellscape of a world to be actually important one day.

Anyway Zeid is gonna go report back to Gilgamesh and we'll all go deal with the Shadow Lord when the time comes. Iroha thanks both of them for their help in everything, she'll be looking into the bell while we make history happen correctly.

>>> From now on all Rhapsodies of Vana'diel updates will be down in their own section on the table of contents. <<<

Chapter 12: The Shadow Lord

Xarcabard

Trion's feathers are ruffled according to Halver and he wants to chat with me. He'll be in his chambers.

And just like that I have my go ahead to save the world.

Xarcabard is covered with demons, the closer you get to the castle the more there are. The front door is open so must be fine if I go inside.

Castle Zvhal

It's swimming with demons of course. However with my training I can easily slip through. Until I find the inner gate closed. Crap.

To my left is a pit, I head down it and head through some maze like tunnels.

It leads to a room with 4 giant pits and beastmen of every race. Also it's a hell maze of slopes and trenches. I take it nice and slow(I get lost), none of the beastmen are brave enough to try my blade(I have invisibility).

Once I manage to bypass the trench mess I come to a room with goblins and gated rooms. The rooms aren't locked but it's a maze of doors. Through them I find demons and a strange platform. Is it a teleporter?

It sure is, it's not a maze though. There are a total of five of the teleporting platforms.

These demons are a little more feisty and some drop nice spells.

Still this is the last line of resistance. I head up the castle and come out outside again.

A bridge and a tall spire, ominous.

This is the final door. No turning back. No back up besides my bonds.

And Zeid.

This is the tomb of the Shadow Lord.

The crystals in the tomb start glowing.

We put our guard up. We both know what is coming.

The vision I had at the magicite...

Before we can even react it's too late.

Shite. Well I can still summon a fake Zeid I guess.

Maybe once you fought death, but now you fight me.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

...And something else I needed to do? What is wrong with me?

The soundtrack is really quite solid.

It gets better as we go so look forward to it.

Remarkably short for a Final Fantasy game I have to say.
:cheeky:

It really kinda is pretty short even for being just the base game. The expansions get longer and longer as we go on and most of the story is connected so buckle up folks we just laid some groundwork.

Man it weirds me right out seeing convert in the JA menu on a drk.

You can rip invisible/sneak/deodorize from my cold dead hands while I'm doing these story quests.
