Yeah, Zero's pretty slow to start. That's kind of a recurring pattern with Trails games; pretty much every single entry is a slow burn. I do like the Crossbell games' approach of basically doing a vertical slice of a single complicated city; its kinda neat to focus on something as small scale and nuanced as municipal power rivalries for once. But by the same token, sometimes it doesn't exactly make for riveting plot motion.

The slow start makes more sense here, though. It's a brand new section of a widely disdained group. They are literally starting from rock bottom. There's no reason for anyone to trust them or show them respect and honestly watching them build a reputation is part of what makes this arc my favorite of the first three.

The slow start in the Cold Steel games is because they insist on teaching you everything right away so there's a ton of stop-and-go and the intro to Cold Steel II is just garbage

Your discussion about Lloyd's uniform reminds me of a discussion I had with a friend waaaaaaay back when Resident Evil 2 came out on the PSX. We decided that Leon's secret hobby was sewing and he had made an RPD uniform long ago since he was such a fan of them and decided to wear that for his first day

One thing I love about the Crossbell games is how incredibly smart each of the core 4 are in different ways. It's still pretty subtle but you can definitely see the start of this group filling their roles.

-Lloyd is great at making connections and drawing conclusions in addition to his detective qualifications

-Elie knows her way around politics (which comes with the added perk of knowing how decisions will play out to an extent) and excellent at deducing motives

-Randy is surprisingly proficient at reading people and thinks outside the box

-Tio knows everything else and can Orbal Google whatever she doesn't

In other news, I noticed this forever ago but the sheer amount of beds in Crossbell that are set up so the pillow is not against the wall is upsetting. Maybe that's why no one there can get anything done, they're too sleep deprived from picking up their pillow over and over every night

This is the only arc I never ran into money trouble. I also didn't feel the need to raise my defense just a few points, but I did go there a bunch of times at the end of Azure and had no problem getting the unique stuff from the Casino as it became available

Estelle and Joshua's new face portraits are possibly the most jarring reminders that the series changed art directors after Sky 3.

Estelle actually mostly looks like herself, albeit with darker hair (and her hair thing spun around the opposite way for some reason), but Joshua doesn't even slightly resemble his Sky sprites and it is very distracting

Maybe Joshua discovered the Orbal Comb

- I think Randy was largely just teasing Lloyd because it was fun. And while Elie is the romance option, and she's fine, I think Randy's ending is actually the most interesting and gives the most new information.

Honestly, a case could be made for Randy being the secret main character of this arc and there are times where it feels like he was originally supposed to be and that Lloyd was either added in later or they swapped places

When Ilya isn't being an HR nightmare, she's a pretty solid character. And, if nothing else, I appreciate how her being a lesbian is treated as just a fact. No one questions it or finds it unusual, which as A Gay is nice to see. Sky wasn't BAD about per se, but Olivier's finding Joshua attractive is treated as slightly odd. At least by Estelle. But then again Estelle was very anti-anyone finding Joshua attractive

One thing I wasn't a fan of was how ingrained the minigames became to completion as the series went on. Vantage Masters, Pom Party, all that. Hell, even cooking. Sure, put stuff behind it, but don't make it 25% of the game.

Fishing (barely) gets a pass for being so easy after Cold Steel II

I love Noel. I wasn't a big fan of her my first time through the duology, but she grew on me and her arc was pretty great, even if it does feel like it replaces a certain someone's arc whose basically sidelined in Azure.

Her biggest strength is also her biggest weakness. When she's useful, which is 90% of the time, she is incredibly useful. Debuffing in a game where it's actually useful and makes a ton of hard fights manageable, natural AoE, and solid physical stats. Very handy to have around and I tend to replace Elie with her for random battles. But that 10% of the time she's useless and, sometimes, an active liability and should be regulated to buffing and item usage, which aren't always the best option. She really blooms in Azure. Between her and Randy's Crash Bomb, 75% of random battles are in the bag

Also it's fun to imagine her just hauling around an armory wherever she goes

All that said...while we're approaching the end of it, we're still at that first part of Trails games before the fun stuff becomes readily accessible so she's just ok right now

Stabbey_the_Clown posted:

- Support turns are unfortunately both uncommon and unpredictable. It's not a great system.

I like the system, but it has a pretty glaring flaw. The ones that are offensive are all AoE, and one of Trails' favorite things is making you fight a group of enemies who have a strong attack they use once they've been damaged at all. And as a result, those fights are going to be long so you're almost certainly gonna find yourself in a tough spot if you don't forget to turn them off.

The defensive ones are great. Elie gets pretty nerfed in Azure so, outside of a few fights, I kept her on the back lines whenever possible. She used Saintly Bullet surprisingly often.

In terms of combat, the SSS is so well balanced that swapping someone else in, anyone else, tends to be a worse choice. For Noel specifically, in combat she came across to me as mostly useless whenever I had the possibility of using someone else. (Her locked Earth slot does not help because Earth is a bad element for stats, and she isn't good at casting.) In terms of personality, she started out fine, but as time passed, I started to find her schtick more tiresome.

It's probably my playstyle, but I've always been a student of the school of "you don't need to heal if the bad guys die quick enough". I tend to only put Elie on the front lines for boss fights whenever possibly because even by the end of both games, 3 physical attackers + Tio is usually enough for the randos and quicker. Zero is when Trails starts to dip it's toe into giving you the tools to bust the game wide open
