Tim Follin! I heard a story where Shigeru Miyamoto got actually mad at him about the Plok soundtrack because he thought the SNES couldn't sound that good

I'm sure most people know by now but I would also like to present one of his greatest pieces, the Solstice theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_gObHt1uZA

atb is fine in theory just every game that uses it moves far too slowly. this is due to the fact that the core jrpg audience is composed of weak gamers who would fold under any real time pressure.

turn based is good too but, like chess without a clock, on some level fundamentally cowardly. the player abdicates any real stress in pursuit of a meaningless perfection. even the illusion of pressure is too much to bear.

in conclusion, real time with pause wins again

So what I'm hearing is that Baten Kaitos is in fact the perfect rpg

I'm wondering if the top row is all PS2 mascots: Ratchet, Sly, and Jak?

idk if you're interested in 100% but if you do play dk64, there's a bug on the water level (gloomy galleon) that makes it much harder to get a specific banana after getting a specific ability. it's the one that involves shooting a robot fish's heart if you wait until you have the sniper scope

At the same time though if you just turn off the sniper scope between shots you can still manage to do it

Absolutely a nasty glitch though

I randomly installed Void Bastards from my backlog, and this game kicks rear end.

It's a roguelite FPS game, where you raid abandoned space ships full of monsters and hazards for various junk, that you can then craft into weapons and other permanent upgrades. Each mission is about 5 minutes long, depending how it goes. Sometimes it's a clean sweep and loot operation, sometimes it's a massive clusterfuck of pratfalling on oil slicks while getting hammered by rocket turrets and ghosts.

There isn't that much to the game, most ships you enter are pretty similar, but the different modifiers and enemy combinations and everything else makes for a lot different gameplay situations. 10 hours in and I'm still getting surprised by strange emergent messes the game manages to land me in.

Very clean roguelite systems implementation as well, almost every feature in the game feels impactful.

Have these people made other games? How's the DLC? I wouldn't mind throwing some money at them if they're still active.

The DLC adds a couple of things; there's Tydy bots, that roam around the map like pirates. Ships being cleaned by them have 1 or 2 Tydy Bots roaming around, and if they spot you they don't deal any damage, but start draining Oxygen. It also adds a new weapon (a vacuum cleaner that drains health from organic enemies, and slag from mechanical ones), and TYDY ships, which either have a lost and found (you get the choice of 1 of 3 parts, can authorize for another selection) or furnaces (have a guaranteed heart starter, but you need to find the key + deal with the wall of fire inside).

It's only 5 bucks and it adds a bit of variety, so I rather like it.

i've never played any of them tbh but i've watched someone play them and they're some of the funniest games ever. yakuza gets 0 laughs from ten thousand lines of dialog, shenmue kills with a single terribly voiced NPC saying 'try asking the Chinese about Chinese' lol
