Or was it just one of those movies I saw in college and thought was smarter than it was. I mean poo poo, I thought Boondock Saints was good back then, but so did everyone in Boston in 2005ish. So what is it, is Donnie darko an amazing movie I should rewatch for a whole new perspective on life, or is the only thing it gave us an association or Patrick shwaze to kiddie porn dungeons?

Its a lot better than Boondock Saints. That movie is beyond awful. The director's cut of Donnie Darko is a lot better. I think its a pretty good movie.

I liked Donnie Darko because I saw it as a teenager and I liked weird teen movies about weirdos doing whatever, the same way I liked something like Mallrats or Repoman. And then Donnie lets himself get smushed by a jet engine and they play that loving Gary Jule version of Madworld and apparently there was supposed to be pathos there. It's better than S. Darko OP

I rewatched it again a while back and no, not really. I guess I give it credit for being unique. There's also a weird thing with the Head Over Heels montage scene where the music kind of cuts and repeats in a strange way if you've heard that song enough times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsyfGwlf_l0 Carlos Lantana posted:Honestly can't remember Requiem is extremely good lol what. Requiem is indeed very good and is shot really well and has great acting but the plot is just like absolute misery porn and the kids who found it to be "so deep" hadn't ever really experienced hardship or destruction so its passable as entertainment for them. Someone gave me that movie for my 16th birthday and I was like "what the gently caress, gently caress you, im not watching this again". thank you these have been my opinions

I learned this neat trick about thinking critically about what I enjoy and being able to appreciate his writing without accepting his misogyny, racism, etc. His words still have plenty of relevance regarding the human condition, work, going insane, alcoholism, being a huge piece of poo poo, world war 2, growing up and living in LA for 70 years, the beats/beatniks, college readings in the 7ps and 80s, etc.

At 19, I almost got a tattoo of the countdown to the end of the world on my arm, so much did I enjoy Donnie Darko. I don't even know what the hell I thought the significance of that tattoo possibly could have been, other than "Hey, remember that movie Donnie Darko??". I had it printed out and ready to go to the tattoo parlor and everything. I don't remember if I chickened out or came to my senses. In any case, still a pretty good movie, OP, but I do not at this present time suggest getting a Donnie Darko tattoo or anything.

I remember it was talked up a lot by people at a forum I used to frequent back then - one even had their username changed to Cellardoor. I thought the time travel and the guy in the bunny suit was interesting, but overall the movie didn't have the same profound impact on me as it had on those guys. Different strokes I guess.

I don't understand this; the musical choices made in the director's cut are much worse than the theatrical cut, save for MAYBE "MLK" by U2 played during the ending montage scene. I honestly can't remember if that was actually played, or if Richard Kelly said that's what he almost went with and someone spliced it up on youtube. Either way, that song would work for that part.

Watched it freshman year with my roommate and almost immediately he says, “Oh, he’s gonna travel through time and die in a plane crash” and even twenty years later he still claims that it was a complete guess. We also watched Pi, another movie that everyone watches that makes zero sense and then lies that they actually really liked it and it was really deep.

Nah, the director’s cut ruins what is a nice ambiguous psychological thriller and turns it into a bad sci-fi film by over explaining everything with pages of the time travel book and added unnecessary scenes. I saw it once and hated it. I also disliked the rearrangement of songs when they were perfectly placed to begin with. The Killing Moon opener 4 lyfe.
