Lmao yeah there's been an effort to reappraise and reclaim Jennifer's Body as misunderstood, but it wasn't misunderstood I think as much as it just didn't succeed creatively. Like you said-- the camerawork and production do not match the narrative being told.

Which is a shame because that's absolutely a horror take that's evergreen-- exploring high school girls and the predatory systems around them that encourage them to either be victims or weaponize their sexuality to the point of monstrousness.

But like, the movie itself was one of the most slickly produced glossy things you can imagine. From what I could see the intent was to let the gloss both sell the movie to a wide audience as a "dark Twilight" of sorts and make the exceptionally dark themes more palatable, but that required exceptional charm the movie just didn't have. Seyfried is playing a nerd from a much more naturalistic version of the story that would work better, Megan Fox is vamping, and the Diablo Cody writing style was hitting an unfortunate terminus as the culture mutated beneath her feet away from anything she was selling.

There's some pretty rad monster makeup and while Megan Fox doesn't quite work in the story being told she is still an underrated actress with her own charms. Again I could kick the movie in the dick more but like, on-balance there are much worse movies out there.

Yeah I loved it the first time I saw it, and I’m convinced that’s because I was out sick from work with a raging fever and that film just slotted perfectly into the bizarre headspace I happened to be in.

I think I watched Lynch’s Dune that same day and it did not have the same effect, however.

Mullholland Drive was a pet favorite of a wannabe director I knew and while watching it dawned on me-- this dude is a creepy control freak who gets off on making people miserable and hanging onto him for approval. Thank you Mullholland Drive.

Mulholland Drive is a garbled mess of a movie. If it didn't have 2 beautiful lead women who eventually get naked together, no one would ever remember it.

It belongs to a category of the most pernicious "auteur" subgenre-- I am obsessed with my actress and also with torturing my actress, and by calling attention to how hosed up that is, that makes it ok.

Lots of great movies have been made that way but like, that's what they are-- Perfect Blue (and thus Black Swan), 8 1/2, Kill Bill, you know what I'm talking about.

Come at me scrub-lord I'm ripped!
If I remember right Mulholland drive was kind of supposed to be like a series so they had shot some different kinds of episodes which is why some of it feels kind of disjointed like the scene in the diner and everything but in general has everyone says it's not best to overthink it it's a David Lynch movie

All I remember from that movie is something about low shoulder, some weird endless water fall, men being killed and then out of no where someone asks for a tampon.

Gonna rewatch Donnie Darko based on this thread, see if it does stand the test of time. Even Boondock Saints I think has been relegated to the 'fine, not terrible but definitely not good, but fine' bin; I think I watched it last year sometime and didn't absolutely hate it like the last rewatch, maybe I just came around to not really give a poo poo how good a movie from 1999 is anymore.

Somewhat related: I actually just watched The Cell for the first time last night and it was alright. I honestly thought they'd spend more time inside Vincent D'Onofrio's hosed-up head, but what we did get was really cool, some scenes looked like paintings by Beksinski or Barlowe. And he acted the poo poo out of that role, as he tends to when the role is 'giant imposing lunatic'.

I liked Spun better than Requiem For A Dream, from what I remember.

Nice, most people don't know that's a New Order remix. Blade was, and still is awesome.

Another one that I'd like to rewatch is The Fountain, which I'm sure is good as far as trippy movies go, but I can't remember a thing other than it's one guy travelling through time to find eternal youth, because I was 19 years old and getting busy with my girlfriend at the time. :smug:

The fountain is another one where you could interpret it a number of different ways. I might watch that again soon too.

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?
Fountain's a good movie. Brilliant score. Honestly, and I mean that as someone who actually likes Aronofsky, he'd probably be hobbled without clint mansell who might be my favorite movie composer now that morricone's morrigone

The first time I saw it, I didn't think it was that great.

A few years later I saw it again, and I like cried.

Also, the Winky's scene is memorable. I think the video below explains why.

So what is it, is Donnie darko an amazing movie I should rewatch for a whole new perspective on life, or is the only thing it gave us an association or Patrick shwaze to kiddie porn dungeons?

This fucker has been nightmare fuel ever since. He apparently wasn't asked to dress up like that, he just told Lynch he was gunna do something himself and Lynch loved it. Then he had his wife shot in the head, and was arrested and acquitted for the murder. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has a character that Brad Pitt played that was based on Blake.

Lost Highway is just An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge but made by David Lynch with some very notable actors.
Robert Blake did a very good job at being Death before he went and did what he did (he totally did it and got away with it somehow).

Oh well put, I hadn't heard that connection before. I should give it another watch and see if that changes anything. Also yeah Blake totally did it and got away with it, no doubt.
